2014 - 2017: GM - Tow Mirror vs Aftermarket 1AMRP01786

  • One of the most commonly asked question about tow mirrors. Which is better? Genuine GM Factory Tow Mirrors or Aftermarket. Here is a video of each installed onto my 2016 Silverado. Impressed with the build quality of the mirrors from 1A Auto. Part # from 1A Auto is 1AMRP01786 versus a GM DPN Mirror.
    For custom harnesses, you can order my site here - HarnessDR.com

    So tempted to do this upgrade. I really like the 1A Auto mirrors, all except the layout of the turn signal/running light design. If they had same design as OEM and turn signal in glass, I'd be buying them today

    Phil, I am looking at upgrading from the smaller OEM mirror to the 1aauto towing mirror. My current mirrors have heated glass, power glass, power folding, chevron turn signals, memory, reverse tilt, and puddle lamp. I don’t care if the cargo light feature on the towing mirror works. Do I need to rewire anything or am I good to go for plug and play. Also, my local garage told me the power fold gear on aftermarket is plastic vs. metal for OEM so the can be damaged easy if you move them by hand.

    Excellent review! Very nicely done.
    I have a quick question for you. I have a 2016 Silverado LTZ, and my current mirrors have the following features: power adjust, power folding, heated, integrated turn signal, tilt in reverse, and a puddle lamp. Since my existing mirrors have all of these features and the truck itself has support for them, will there need to be any wiring changes? Or, would these mirrors be truly plug-n-play for me?
    Thanks!

    I have a question about the wiring, I bought a set of those exact power folding mirrors from 1A Auto to replace my factor powerfolding mirrors on a 2016 GMC Sierra SLT. In order to get the reverse lamps in the mirror to work as well as the amber running light, which pin wires need to be moved around?? Thank You

    Have stock tow mirrors on my silverado thinking about getting the led turn signal and spot light but i have to say when powered off i do like the aftermarket look but now that i see them working the oem mirrors seem kinda better. the led light are just brighter and better during day and night. in the video you really cannot tell the turn signals are blinking on the aftermarket up front and on the rear view you cannot see at all b/c the spot light totally drowns them out i think im going to have to go with a different brand which is not what i wanted. then turn signal in the glass i liked and if you could make the led light much brighter i think youd have the perfect set

      You will need to swap the harness with my custom harness OR modify your existing harness with one of my DIY Kits. There will be NO need for a computer reprogram. Not sure why the dealer says this. In the 3000+ customers I've successfully helped with my harness, there has been no need for a dealer reprogram. You will retain all the features you have now, memory, power fold, etc as long as you have that now. Email me at - sales@HarnessDR.com for more info and/or to order you custom harness set. Thanks!

    Since you probably know about my question: I'm looking at buying a 2014 Sierra SLT with the folding mirrors. If I buy either the GM o r 3rd party with folding they should work like factory correct?

    • @philgamboa2906
      @philgamboa2906  6 років тому

      Not necessarily. For 2014 and early 2015, GM didn't land the tow mirror lighting circuits (specifically the cargo light and running light) at the door jamb - cabin side. So if you upgrade to tow mirrors, there will be additional work you'll have to do to get the tow mirrors to function correctly. Check out my other videos and look at RZY - Jumper Harness Part #23387133.

  • @mobilegreg

    I have a 2014 Silverado that has the small mirrors without power fold or turn signal. I would like to upgrade to the 1a auto mirrors and I noticed you mentioned a custom harness. Is this something that is available and would work on my truck without the factory folding and turn signal option.

    • @philgamboa2906
      @philgamboa2906  6 років тому

      Greg - This would be a 2-phase process for you. First phase is the swap door harnesses. Second phase, since you're 2014, would be to source and install the RZY Jumper Harness - Part # 23387133. I have a video for this. GM didn't land the tow mirror light circuits to your door jamb, on the cabin side of the connector. Thanks GM. LOL. Specifically, the cargo lamp and running lamp circuits will be missing. So...if you are comfortable with installing that jumper harness, you can achieve this upgrade.

    Hey Phil I'm considering putting tow mirrors on my 2016 Silverado 1500 LT and I've found some mirrors on carid.com by Spec-D tuning thats heated and power adjustable with side markers. Whats your opinion on those mirrors over the 1A Auto mirrors?

    • @philgamboa2906
      @philgamboa2906  6 років тому

      Mike Jorden - I haven’t seen them first hand. I’ve only had my hands on OEM, 1A Auto/AM Auto, and Syppo.
      In fact, I have a list of “Mirrors to stay away from” and a couple of models are from Carid. “Torxe” is one that I know for sure. Don’t recall Spec-D. Many of those mirror makers source the mirros from the same place. So the $200 and less sets are the ones that are the most problematic. Mostly incorrectly wired internally.

    Your knowledge on wiring and these lights are great. Any chance you could make your custom harness for the A1 Auto mirrors for a tundra. I read and did some digging and found that you cant use the factory power fold. It has a separate wire and switch that has to be installed. Also I was hoping that the rear spot lights on the mirror would be plug and play but they are not. It sucks to have a platinum tundra with factory power fold and yet it isnt compatible with these mirrors.

      If you have an 18 and LTZ Tail lights, you'll want the factory harnesses that come with those tail lights. Swap out the LT Harness with the LTZ Harnesses. Install the tail lights. Great video as always! I purchased aftermarket towing mirrors for my 2017 Silverado and the glass vibrating at highway speed made me want to go to my dealer and purchase the OEM towing mirrors to get rid of the vibration. After viewing this video, I'm not sure what to do anymore. Did anyone ever come up with a solution to reduce or help with the vibration of the upper glass?

    • @philgamboa2906
      @philgamboa2906  6 років тому

      Pierre-Michael Cote - Not that I am aware of. It seems that the upper glass vibration across all mirrors are very similar and are an inherent issue since you have a much larger surface area.

    Mr. Gamboa,Thanks for all the information. I have a 2016 with the DL3 and A45 options. I think I saw in one of your videos that you produce a harness for the A1 Auto so that the lights work properly as well as the power fold. Thanks,Jeff

    • @philgamboa2906
      @philgamboa2906  6 років тому

      Jeff, I've done this upgrade over 200 times, helping over 300 members on the GM Trucks Forum. You can most certainly upgrade to these mirrors from 1A Auto. They are and have been in a Sold Out situation for about 2-3 weeks now. In order for this particular set to be Plug and Play, they will need to come to me first. I then fix them up and build a harness set so that when it gets to you, they will be Plug and Play. All you need to do is replace the harnesses with mine, and swap the mirrors. You'll retain power fold, power adjust, heat, turn signal, reverse tilt (if equipped, and memory (if equipped). You will lost auto dimming on the driver side. No tow mirror has driver side dimming. You'll gain the amber park lamps, and white LED cargo lights (spot lights that shine rearward). I provide all this as a service, but mirrors are out of stock at the moment. Let me know if I can help.
      Sorry for the delay in response. I must have missed the reply.

These mirrors, out of the box, will be Plug and Play with my harnesses for 2015.5 and up. The difference between seat memory model and non, is that the mirror memory model has a bonus puddle lamp that shines down.

      You can find a set for your truck. The power mirrors will be plug and play, but if you don't have heated mirrors, you'll have to wire them yourself. You'll also have to wire the turn signals, running lights and reverse lights yourself as well. There are forums that will help you figure out what wires to tap in to. It's not hard to do. I installed a set of aftermarket mirrors on my 14 Silverado that doesn't have the factory plug for the turn signals in the glass or anything else. I had to wire it myself.
      For me, I had to connect eight wires, four wires per mirror. Two of the eight wires are just ground wires so they're super easy.

      @sccuttic 6 років тому +1

      Bart Jeffcoat I almost forgot.. to have the running lights work as dual function... running light and turn sjgnal... you would need to do a little extra wiring with the mirrors. I had to install resistors and diodes behind the top glass. It might seem like a lot of work, but it's not that bad. I did see that there was a little kit so I wouldn't have to cut and solder the mirror wires, but I saw that after I had already modified them. It was just a little kit that had the resistors and diodes already inside a little box and just made the install cleaner.
      Check the forums, silveradosierra.com is where I got information plus other UA-cam videos.
      I had to connect two wires for turn signals, one wire per side, two wires for the running lights, one wire per side and two wires for the reverse lights, one wire per side. That's 6 of your 8 wires. Your other two are ground wires.

      Even though you have some of the features, it is not plug and play. The cargo light will not work since the existing harness will have one of the dimming circuits using the same slot as the cargo light. Also, the running lamp will be using the puddle lamp circuit and it won't work right either. The running lamp will behave like a puddle lamp and will only come on at night when you unlock the doors, instead of a true running light that is on all the time your headlights are on.
