LG Refrigerator Won't Cool - How to Troubleshoot and Fix
Вставка
- Опубліковано 22 сер 2023
- LG refrigerators are some of the most notorious units to not cool. But how can you ascertain what part is bad - is it a common fan, a board, or a sealed system issue? In this video, we go over many of the ways you can potentially diagnose a bad system, and figure out how to fix or replace it.

It's crazy people pay thousands for appliances that won't even do their basic functions properly without having to come to a UA-cam channel to make them work.
Thx for your work.
Cat lady?
Who cares? You act like people who properly take care of their stuff never have issues LMAOO😂
Two items caught my attention: 1) current is measured in amps and not ohms and 2) please do not measure a fuse using an ohm meter when there is power on the circuit - there is a possibility of damaging the meter. By the way - GREAT videos,I really love them!
I noticed the same error
I have a two-year-old LG four-door. Running great so far. HVAC tech here. You did a great job helping me understand my refrigerator. I’m not a refrigeration guy but I’ll get with you if I have problems. Thank you.
That first joke caught me off guard and I laughed way to hard 😂 10/10 delivery
Agreed. Totally caught off guard with the opening line.
Thank you very much for the information. This video is priceless! We bought 2 of these refrigerators last year and the first one failed about 2 weeks after the warranty had run. I will run the tests and the forced defrost before I call LG.
Good video, Ben. On my same model as yours on the right, the control board is showing the 3 blink code, meaning bad compressor but also the voltage to the compressor is only 85-95 volts while running. So can both the board and compressor be bad? Or if board is bad, could it show a wrong code?
Great video! This saved me huge money. After walking through several of the suggested checks, it was very helpful to hear the details close to the end of the video about the 5 year warranty for the sealed system and compressor. LG was very responsive after I called the 1-800 number. They scheduled an appointment with a technician who is replacing the evaporator, condenser, and compressor in our unit, with parts and labor covered by the warranty.
Glad it helped!
Had all those done..still won't cool..complete trash
I bought that same battery powered screw driver some time back after you mentioned it in a video. It's still working well...Thanks
Hey would you recommend the FrigidAir 23.3 CU Gallery GRFG2353AF. It has no ice maker in the door and single evaporator.
Do you have any recommendations for a mini chest or upright freezer? Any particular brands to buy or avoid?
Very good detailed video, will give these a try.
Thank you for taking the time to produce a very thorough and helpful video. Much appreciated. 👍
Nailed it!
We had error code #3 and the compressor wasn't running. Per your guidance, we schedule service via LG. They came with parts and replaced the compressor under warranty. Thanks so much.
Very clear and understanding video respect bro!
I have fixed one GE fridge with your help, now going try LG. Appreciate what u doing very useful especially for handy people who want but out of knowledge)
THANKS for such a detailed instructional video
Thank you Ben for an excellent video. Your explanations are very clear and understandable. I would like your confirmation on something before I spend money on a board (which I'll buy from you, if you have it). I have an LG LMXS28596D /01 and my freezer is at +10 degrees when it is set at -6. I ran the 3 tests and don't get any LED flashes, and LG ThinQ app doesn't find any problems either. My CON201 connector only has 3 wires, and the highest voltage I read is 128 VAC (the other 2 combinations are around 50 VAC). I have an amp clamp, but I lent it to someone, so I can't get the amperage reading right now, but it seems like the low supply voltage is enough to call the board bad. Is that correct? Is the board covered in that 1st 5 year warranty? (I've had it 4 years). The board # is EAX67860903-1. Thanks in advance for your help!
Excellent information, very helpful.
This is an excellent video. Thank you.
Hey Ben, you do great informative videos. I had an LG that wasn't cooling at all. The current I read at the compressor was .6, but at the con201 I would only get up to 96V, sometimes it made it to 108V. So changed the main pcb board and had same thing. And the LED on the old board and new board both did the same thing, nothing, never lit up at all or flashed any codes.
Did you check the capacitor? That could be a possibility too, right?
Enjoyed this video.
Mate. love y u. Our fridge won't cool I followed your steps my wife and I got the fridge to work it was a triumphant. Results .my wife has been stressing all day you can imagine the food the expense etc. Now we can sleep happily .it was great experience joint effort. We enjoyed it Thank you again Mate will follow you always Michael
What was wrong with it?
Too much ice everything was frozen pulled all panels out defrosted clean the ice .working like a charm Thanks again
Ben, have you ever heard of the fridge brand kibernetik?
What is that brush head you used for cleaning the coils?
On the bottom of the fridge there is a flap that separates the cool air going into the compressor and the hot air leaving the compressor. It can get damaged and come off. that could cause some of the issue as well with the unit.
I did a forced deftost on my samsung with twin cooling as the fan had frozen over, fridge worked like a charm beforehand. After defrost i cant hear the compressor or fan come on. Tried to do he "force compressor and fan on" function and i havnt heard anything come on. Any ideas? Fridge was fine before the defrost( with exception of frozen fan)
this guy is the best
Excellent video! Many thanks!
Excellent video. Thanks!
Hi Ben, just ran across your informative video as I have a cooling issue with my fairly new LG (similar to the one on right side in your video).
Its not cooling (temp around 50F), but the freezer is working fine. Food in freezer are frozen solid.
Had a tech came out and wanted $800 to fix it. Indicated that the evaporator fan assembly need replace. I opted out of the repair and order the just fan and replace it myself. I check to make sure the fan is running before closing the unit up. While I have the assembly opened, I also noted the evaporator is running with light frosting/cold (so I assumed it's functioning). After several days past, frig still around 50F. So now I think the tech had mis-diagnosed the issue. Now I am back to square one.
In the beginning of your video you shown the issue with just the cabin not cooling, but quickly went through it. You mentioned sensors and thermistors? Could you direct me one how to locate them and test them?
Any additional help/suggestions are appreciated. Thank you
This same exact thing happened to us. What was your solution?
@@MeganLikesThis I don't have a solution for it yet. I got some assistance from another channel and perform a few test. Narrowing down to possible evaporator. If that the case, I might better off buying a new fridge.
Any updates, mine stopped working yesterday. Took everything apart. The fan is blowing but air doesnt seem to reach the fridge up top. Freezer working fine. Debating wether I should replace or get a new fridge ;( curious if you managed with yours!
What color should the fuse indicator be if the fuse is bad the picture he showed of a fuse had a black light on it. My fuse has a red light on it. Is it possible? My fuse is blown.
HELP:
Question, when you run a defrost test , the evaporator fan should stop running?
Because my LG refrigerator Model # LFXC24726 when I did a first test the evaporator fan working , second same thing working but the third test not running. What should I do?
Fan is bad?
Thanks for the great info.
Ben, I love the steel toe'd Flip Flops !! Safety first
Thanks always . . . you're the "Best"! I'm here in Mansfield,Ohio. 👍
Thanks! Not too far away from me then. I can't say I've been to Mansfield before, but on I-71 it seems like there are 10 exits that take you there!
This video is fantastically useful. I have a related question that i cant get my mind around in these LG French door with ice maker..
How does ice freeze in a French door dual zone refrigerator ice maker? Is there a flexible refrigerant line in/out in addition to a water and power line in the hinge?
When you open the door where ice maker is you can see an air duct on the side wall going down to the freezer. So basically the freezer air is forced up to the ice maker compartment and then back.
What about the compressor starter relay?
The best way to fix an LG fridge is not to buy a LG fridge in the first place. My experience with Korean appliances... they look very pretty & stylish, but the build quality sucks. I ended up replacing them with Whirlpool appliances that were "assembled" in America.
I heard LG ranges are prone to scratching
Their washing machines are perfect though
Fridges sure American brands are great. But washers and dryers and microwaves and maybe even ranges, LG tops any American brand. Especially the laundry units. They are Built very well and can last very long
@@zenyu94 Not so fast, the spider assembly, that holds the drum on front loaders can give out after about 2 years of operation, you should see that when it is spinning at 1000 rpm or so when it gives out!! Whooo hooo.
😢assebled. not Made. big difference
I've seen a GE 27 cu. ft French door without any thru the door dispensers. Water available inside the fridge, ice maker in the freezer. Most places here in Connecticut are asking about $1500. What's your opinion of it?
Buy a new frig😂
I have an LG LMXC23796M, the issue I am having which wasn't necessarily included in this video. I am not having any activity from the Front UI Display Panel. The reason I am asking is because When Cycling the Test Mode I do not receive a Beep. I assume that the audible beep comes from the Front Display. Could the front display have involvement with the Fridge and Freezer not cooling? All of the other hardware seems to be functioning. The connections from the unit to the Door are good. I just haven't seen any information related to the situation of the front display not cooperating. Also just wondering if the Main Board PCB could be the related problem for the display not functioning and the system not cooling. I don't want to replace just the front display or display PCB when it was obviously the Main Board PCB. Any help would be very helpful and appreciated.
Excellent, thank you
Hi Ben, I purchased a new PCB for LG. Watched LG won't cool. Lost $1000 worth of food while away. Smell is horrible and I cant get rid of it.
Get E15.
Called LG and they want a purchase receipt from HD. Cannot find. Won't they go by the date?
Thanks
Ben, would you say that you would check everything in the order you showed in the video if everything is working, but it just won't cool any lower than 40 degrees??
Our fridge just barely will stay at 40 degrees if it's turned all the way down to 34 degrees.
What did u find out?
for 6615JB2005N it has 4 plugs do both have resistance i have one of them showing 0
Nice work on that video. Thank you very much.
Glad you liked it!
If I buy this type of LG fridge but opt not to have it plumbed and not use the ice maker, do you think it would last longer?
LG fridge manufactured in 2021. Bought less than 2yrs. ago and never used ice maker. Needed ice so turned on ice maker switch.
Came to fridge following morning to discover half a tray of melted ice and thawing freezer contents and warming fridge temperature. Never had an issue before flipping the switch.
LG tech has changed compressor and now fingers are crossed for till tomorrow morning.
Excellent video sir! Great information. Ours crapped out after 4 years and is a big paper weight in the garage right now, ours is like the four door on the left. POS
Great video! I ran the tests and in stage “1” all the fans are running properly. I pulled the panels off the back of the fridge and there is no ice build up of any kind. The compressor seems to be running as there is a vibration coming from it. We lost cooling this morning and do not know what to do! Any ideas what could be causing this considering the above? Also, I did run a reset by unplugging for a few minutes. Thanks so much!
Did you find a fix?
Hey Danny how's it going?
Your coil could be covered with dust as mine is right now. This can cause an overheating issue with the compressor, and result in improper operating temperature in the unit. Use a compressor to clean it out properly. So far compressor has already cooled down just from vacuuming the dust out. This should solve my problem of poor cooling in both the Fridge and Freezer. Best Regards
I'll stick with my 1935 GE Monitor Top CK-3. I bought it for 200 bucks and just did the door seal a little while ago. No need for complicated automatic defrost. Put a tray in the bottom, set the control to defrost, wait 8-12 hours, it turns itself back to "on" and leaves the water in the tray. I can open the door and see the evaporator and refrigerant lines right there. No fan. No electronics, just a compressor, a control, and a light.
The item I requested a review on is LG Compact washer and dryer. Washer #WM1455HWA Dryer #DLHC1455W Thank you
Great video
My LG french door LMXS28626s is not cold enough for both the top refrigerator portion and the bottom freezer. When open the freezer back panel to see the evaporator, ice is built up around the top portion where the silver line come in and the light (normal) frost is seen on the top row and portion of the 2nd row of the evaporator while the rest of the evaporator has no frost at all. The repair tech diagnosed the problem is the freezer evaporator fan not working (after he waited for the compressor to run and did not hear the fan running). Is this the real problem for my refrigeratornot cold enough (the top frig portion is only 45F even being set at 33F and the freezer is only 25F when set at -6F). The coil fan is working. My questions:
1. is the evaporator the only problem and fixing it will make the refrigerator cold again?
2. could there be also a leak of refrigerant in addition to the fan (heavy frost where the silver line come in as described above?
3. My refrigerator ice tray does not turn and dump ice in the bucket. Will fixing the problem in question #1 and #2 above will solve the ice tray turning problem?
Thanks
Same problem here did you ever figure it out?
On any fridge it's important to seal acidic foods like tomato, vinegar, pickles etc. These will eat away at evaporator causing leak.
Thanks for the video! My whole LG refrigerator stopped cooling (fridge and freezer sections). If the compressor is vibrating lightly, could it still be bad? Thanks!
Did you get it fixed? I’ve got the same issue right now .
@@caitlinelaine1 Yes, I hired an independent appliance repair guy. The compressor was bad. These crappy LG refrigerators come with a linear compressor that go bad after a few years. The internal cylinder still moves (hence the presence of vibrations), but the seal went bad, so the compressor was not pumping the coolant adequately. LG warranties the compressor part for 10 years, but labor is only warrantied for 5 years. So if you are between 5 years and 10 years, you can contact LG and provide them the name and number of your repair person and they will ship the new compressor to your repair person. I hear the new "universal" compressor is supposed to be better and resolve some of the issues that plagued the original compressor. The installation of the new compressor requires a software update of your refrigerator's circuit board. The repair person (if they have worked on LGs) should be aware of this and should have a device called a jig and the required software. They also sell these jigs on Amazon (LG CJT30000002). Good luck!
@@caitlinelaine1 Yes, I hired an independent repairman. He said it was a bad compressor. LG uses a linear compressor in their refrigerators. I read the internal seal on the original LG linear compressors wear after a few years, so even though the piston is still moving inside the compressor (hence the reason I still feel the vibrations), it is not pumping the coolant adequately. LG has suffered multiple class action lawsuits for these compressors. Mine failed after the class action deadline. LG still warranties the compressor part for 10 years, but only warranties labor for 5 years. If you are between 5 and 10 years, and if you hire your own repair person, you can contact LG's warranty department with the name and number of your repair person. LG will contact your repair person and ship the new compressor to them - mine arrived within a couple of days. The new replacement compressors should come with a big red sticker that says "software Update required". The installation of the new compressor requires a software update of your refrigerator's circuit board. If your tech has worked on LGs before, he should be well aware and he should have a device called a jig to update the software. There are UA-cam videos showing this software update process. Amazon sells these jigs too if you want to see what it looks like (LG CJT30000002). Good luck!
@@caitlinelaine1 Yes, it was a bad compressor.
I ran the 1st panel test but it would not go into the 2nd or 3rd test?
So mine voltage is reading high to the compressor. Is there anything else I should be checking prior to calling a repair man?
My LG french door fridge with a bottom freezer, which includes an ice maker, is 11 years old and has never had a problem. It was made in Mexico.

The compressor of my LG refrigerator is keep running (it stop maybe one time for 15 minutes/day). The freezer is cold, I mean everything else is working. The low side show 4 and high side is 103.Please help. Thanks
My maytag refrigerator was just moved from 1 location to another. It worked before we unplugged it. Now we moved it and it is showing signs of main board failure. How could this have happened? Just coincidentally finally decided to go after 10 years?
Must have been an electrical surge upon plugging in. Should not happen, but does happen.
@@pazomega2560 I replaced the capacitors for $20 and it works again!! :D
When I opened the area I didn't see any of this? I encountered a foam behind it hard to get it out
Secondly, where do we test the sensors for the defrost. Thirdly, if the temperature displayed is off by 30 degrees, where would we find the temp sensor or thermostat that is taking that reading?
How can I turn of the light inside is always on an the not cool enough, I turn of the display mode . Please Help thanks
my fridge stopped working but the freezer works fine, what is the problem, the fan or PCB not working
I had to have my 3 year old LG refrigerators compressor replaced under the class action warranty. Then about 1 1/2 year later the dam thing froze up in the refer area. It was completely solid ice. Having watched the service tech remove the evaporator panel I did it myself. It took 3 hours with a hair dryer to melt it all. Then I just had to do it again yesterday. This video shows how to check if the fans are working. I doubt my fan is working. Now I have to check the thermistor and defrost fuse and take it back apart again. Oh,it took 24 hours for the thing to get back below 40 degrees! The freezer cools fine. My refrigerator was made in 2018 so I doubt if I qualify for any class action repairs this time.
What does it mean if the light doesn’t flash in the back?
We got only three years out of an expensive LG that would not cool even after five service visits over two months. Just not acceptable for an average family. My only power is to never buy any LG product again.
Same here..pathetic
As an engineer, I don’t understand why the system has an internal thermometer and a test suite, plus a rear pub and front panel control and display - but when my cooling failed, the display and audio alarm has no ****ing idea, nor can a special code be entered on the front panel to trigger the test suite without pulling the damn refrigerator out.
No idea why LG does it this way. Virtually all other major brands do.
@@bensappliancesandjunk protects repair income and obsolescence replacement purchases my guess.
Yes 👏
Good video but a few things I noticed. Never do a continuity test on a line fuse with the appliance plugged in. Also, when checking current to the compressor, it's amps not ohms.
LG put a filter drier on this. That's pretty nice. Most don't.
I have the same fridge but the freezer doesn’t work can u help me plz
what if my LG refrigerator running and cold but frezzer not frezzing
Thanks to you, I was able to narrow the issue down to it being low on refrigerant.
I am appreciative of your video becuase I learned alot from it.
I will be calling the 1-800 number you provided, though sadly our fridge is out of warranty by 5 months.
Could you do a clean the ice maker video pls
I did a long time ago. I can update though
I will never buy another LG or Samsung.
Here here! I came across Ben's channel while researching problems with my Kenmore badges LG fridge... And am now watching his tips on what to look for when buying a new fridge 🫠
I love LG Fridge..
lg does not stand by their warranty!!!!!
Why?
Same here...pure garbage
Our new LG LRFWS2906’s food compartment has never cooled lower than 40° with the thermostat set at 33°. The tech who came out on a warranty call basically told us that the refrigerator was working as well as it ever would. He did set our freezer compartment temperature down from 0° to -7°, its lowest setting. He said about 20% of the air in the freezer circulates to the food compartment. That helped bring the temperature down to 36°. We told the tech we thought we had read everything and did our due diligence before selecting an LG. He laughed and said “Well, you didn’t read enough!” We asked what brand he recommends. He said, right now, probably Whirlpool. But, he said that with a shrug.
We have the same pictured on right. We had a 5 years warranty that more than paid for itself. Had techs out here 4 times to get it fixed. Now another year later fridge crapped out. Had to replace compressor which we also had to get a new computer panel and a fan. Fortunately, the compressor had a 10 year warranty. All in all a $1000 plus repair. Never will trust LG. When it worked loved it.
I bought one used. Just stopped working. Is the warranty transferable?
Likely no unless you got the original receipt
These 2 LGs look exactly like the 2 broken LGs in my kitchen
Can you post a video on how to check a 3 way valve or step valve please
One day yes
My LG fridge is blinking 6 time in the board what’s that mean
There is a fact that I want to understand about these LG refrigerators that has linear compressors in them, when these compressors goes bad,is it compulsory to replace these compressors with linear compressors or another brand will still work.
Great video! And, that fridge is an absolute POS. Just avoid it.
LG refrigerator only one problem in 99% is the compressor. I'm telling you as a technician who has changed 60 compressors on LG refrigerators with cooling problems over the past 3 months. of these 60 compressors, two LG refrigerators were a clogged drier filter through which gas passes, but most likely this is also a problem with the compressor, which began to drive oil through the system, which caused the filter to clog
My 5 year old LG fridge died. I'll assume it's the compressor like you say. I only bought it because I was in a desperate hurry, about to go on a business trip when my 30 year old GE quit. Ice maker never worked. It leaked all over the floor and all the lines are underneath. Waste of $1600. Wish I would never have to buy another Chinese manufactured item again, but it's unavoidable at this point. It's all throwaway garbage.
Replacing a compressor on an LG refrigerator costs approximately $650-$750 it depends on what state you live in
Labor and parts or just labor
@@ir8d8radsLG is Korean made
Thank you for the info, i will save myself on not buying an LG, i have the exact fridge you have shown on this video, no code, not cooling..made 2017, pass 5 years, LG said they would pay for the compressor parts, i have to pay for the labor, not sure how long it would last. What is a good refrigerator model to buy that can last atleast 10 years?
I'm gonna bookmark this, because we had 2 refrigirators that didn't cool properly
Did you go through and do these checks? Did you find anything?
We have to turn the temp to 34 degrees to get it to stay around 40 degrees. It never goes below that. It's always seemed like it's been this way, so I was wondering if there's a good place to start.
We did the reset thing on the panel board at the back and everything that you said worked except at the last we still heard the fridge beep twice. And the display shows 88 88
What could be the problem?
Mine was fixed three times in last six weeks.
Hi what model do you have? Thanks
My LG fridge is about 5 years old and has been awful. They boast a 10 year warranty but it’s still costing me too much to repair. Not a fan at all!
A lg service tech came out 5 times and changer most of the parts on it and still not working right gave me a 1200.00 credit for a 3000.00 fridge. Then the service guy knocked over my 450.00 miter saw in mt garage they are not paying for that.
Went through kind of the same thing minus the knocking over of the miter saw, had the compressor changed, then the evaporator, LG tech came out and put freon in multiple times, and fridge still stopped cooling with in a couple of days, he said there is a leak somewhere he can't find, and recommended getting a new fridge, this fridge was only 6 years old.
Solution: don’t buy an LG with a linear inverter compressor! These go bad around 5 years or so. Your whole fridge will stop cooling well and you’ll have to call LG to have them send a tech to swap out the compressor under warranty. Highly recommend you stay away from LG refrigerators until they permanently fix their linear compressors.
They totally dropped the linear compressor for their newer models and reverted to a more conventional 'smart inverter' instead
Not entirely. Some of them still do. One way to tell if it has a linear compressor is if it has the “craft ice” feature where it makes ice balls. Stay away from those as they all use the linear compressor
YOU ahve to pay the labor even if the compressor is covered. Just wonder how much the labor for replacing the compressor.
@Ikey04-ge9gy mine just went out I bought it Nov 9th 2022 and mine makes balls 😢
If compressor, it should be 100% covered by warranty. @@Z_3D
....love the GOLDSTAR reference....they made such horrible products, they had to change the name to LG to run away from their reputation....their quality control hasn't change though....thx.....
If it's a lg skip all this and replace the compressor
Replace with inverter compressor-not linear
I've done that
@chezzyperson3339 What compressor model did you replace the inverter compressor with? Also did you have to reprogram board or do anything extra?
Trash..so.many problems..Mine is 4 years old
What is up with fridges??? These are 10 year plus units. I see many comments about 1 to 3 year failures.
Compressors die very, very prematurely.
While the voltage Test… on my LG refrigerator, control card ( on test mode)is only giving me 70v .. after few seconds voltage rise to 90V … can anyone suggest me which component is likely to be bad on PCB.. I tried changing most of capacitors, no luck
Run test #2, then wait about 45 seconds. It’s ramps up slowly. It doesn’t jump from 0v to 165v the second it comes on.

Do not buy LG appliances. We have had ours for just over a year and the microwave is bad and we have had to repair the ref twice.
