    Can't thank you enough for this. I'm just learning so I practiced on a 2-cylinder 1959 Johnson 5.5hp outboard motor. Tiny little cylinders! :)

    Thanks very much for this as I'm going to be doing my first micrometry of an engine and it's components and this was by far the best set of instructions I have found so far. The written instructions that came with the unit were definitely out of spec! lol

      I put the dial bore gauge in the vice that way I have more control of the micrometer

    Very well explained sir.I am currently reading Tim Gilles engine rebuilding book and i read there is "inside micrometer".Which could be used instead of dial bore instrument.But thats all the infomation so far.

      Yes. Inside micrometers are less expensive, but a little bit harder to use accurately.

    thanks great video learned a lot have you any videos on the electronic bore gauge I have one but really don't know how to use it right, There's no real videos that show how to really set it up easly

    Thanks for the video, super helpful! Any reason you wouldn't also want to do a 4th measurement directly perpendicular to the first one? Seems like that might be where you would get the largest different for out-of-round.

      No, there is no reason that you can't take more than three measurements in the cylinder. The more measurements you take, the more accurate you will be. Three measurements has just been the traditional practice, and honestly it encompasses enough of the cylinder to get a pretty accurate determination of the condition of the cylinder. But, by all means, measure as much as you want to!

    I don't get the zeroing out step using the micrometer. You're zeroing it on the center rear of the cylinder gauge body and the rollers on the side of the tool looks like it extends out further than that. Wouldn't this throw off your zero?

    Great information Justin! Here's a question for your expertise. I have an old motorcycle Cylinder that was obviously dropped(not me). At the bottom base, but not the base itself, the cylinder bore is dented into the chamber. Is this at all possible to repair? The jug is from a 1919 Harley Davidson, so it would be a shame to offer it to the 'Gods of Speed"! Thank You. *P.s. The dent area is around the size of penny and in about 1/8'' at the crest. C'ya.

    Cheaper and easier to get a set of bore finders. Check out Harbor Freight item 5649.
    With these you put it in an an angle, tighten the outshoots the with both hands pull the handle toward you. The rounded faces will automatically find the widest spot. Then you measure with an outside mike like this gentleman is doing but you can hold the mike in your right hand.

      I agree the telescoping gauges are much cheaper, but they are not easier to use. Once you become comfortable using a dial bore gauge (especially if you use it a lot), you will find that it is much faster and much more accurate. With the bore gauge, you only use the micrometer one time, then it only takes a minute to measure six positions in each of the cylinders (this could be up to 48 measurements on an 8-cylinder engine.

      @@JustinMillerAutomotive I’d probably use them if we had them at work. I like the one Starrett set that only springs from one end. It wasn’t hard to learn. The double springs version sucks. One thing I’ve learned doing final inspections in a machine shop is that the more you use the instruments, the easier they become. How much does your setup cost?

      These measurements are in inches. However, the specifications are also usually provided in millimeters.

    So on any dial bore guage like this is the numbers left Of the zero bigger and to the right is smaller ? Also my guage has 0-25 to the left and 0-25 increments to the right

      Typically because the dial rotates clockwise when the piston is compressed. Compressed = in a smaller bore.

    Yes we learn about to use bore gauge so how about inside screw gauge?

      I assume you are talking about an inside caliper? If so, they are good, but not nearly as accurate as the bore gauge--especially if your bore gauge measures to the 1/10000 of an inch.

      No, the bore is larger than the piston. The difference between the size of the piston skirt and the bore is the oil clearance. Oil clearance must also be within specification.

    How much to you rebore it by? By about 5 thousandths of an inch and then use bigger piston rings?

      You find out what oversize pistons are available and bore the cylinder to accept the new piston. They usually come in 0.010 increments.

      If the cylinder wall is damaged (breakage of ring, of valves or simple corrosion), you must evaluate the depth of the scratches or bites. Then you have to multiply that value by two and add it to the measured wear to get the new required minimum bore diameter.
