  • Today's video is a little bit different from my usual but I hope you enjoy it regardless! There are many things we can learn from our past mistakes so I decided to share some of my collecting mistakes & lessons I've learned over these past few years in case they may offer some insight.
    I know that there are plenty of things that I may consider mistakes regarding my collection that may not necessarily apply to another's collection. And vise versa. But this is part of the beauty when it comes to collecting - not everyone's collections will be the same :)
    Let me know what some of your biggest buying regrets are for your collection or if you have any lesson learned that you would like to share 😄
    And I also want to apologize for the poor lighting in the new set-up. I recently ordered some soft light boxes that should hopefully make my upcoming videos look much better~

    Just wanted to provide some clarification about the PS4 versions of Spyro since this keeps coming up in the comments. The launch release was similar to the Switch version in that a download was required. However the 2019 PS4 reprint included all games on the disc. You can only identify this if you open the game up and see a 2019 copyright on the disc, the reprint's box art remained unchanged. Hope this detail helps others, I'm not sure if this applies to PAL or different regions, but this is the case for the North American version.
    Edit: apparently a similar reprint happened in the PAL region as well.

      Definitely this for me. I had so much stuff that I sold too early. Whenever I sell or trade in games, I try to put the money I make back into gaming. (Though I very rarely sell or trade in games anymore.) Some of the games I got rid of too early, I wish I would have held onto because of monetary reasons and then there are some games I wish I hadn't gotten rid of because of sentimental reasons. Ten years ago, I told myself that everything I buy or get as a gift pertaining to gaming, I'm keeping and I've stuck with that to this day. I guess it was just a phase I was going through and I think a lot of people who are into gaming and collecting go through it at some point as well.

    I’ve really been struggling with FOMO lately, especially since there have been a lot of shortages of physical copies at the stores I shop at. I missed up out on some 1st party 3DS games back in the day and I just can’t seem to shake that fear of missing out on a non-scuffed box or complete set. You’re completely right about waiting though, the discounts that happen later are too good to pass up. Great video!

    • @grahamkelly8662

      So I just googled FOMO and yeh, I suffer this and it’s absolute hell. Right now, I have a v2 neon blue red switch. Loved it for 8 months then stopped playing. I’m now interested in buying a switch Oled and I want a particular special edition limited and I’m having massive fear of missing out. Like, I might not even get back into switch but the fear of this certain special edition Oled switch, selling out before I buy, really makes me feel a certain way and it isn’t good. I’ve been stuck in fucking limbo, for weeks, trying to decide to buy Oled switch or not. 1 min I’m like, yeh just buy it and if you don’t love, sell for good price and next I’m like, Na just forget about it. The Oled screen and extra screen size, isn’t a big deal. So I’m more thinking just buy it before it sells out and if I don’t like or just don’t use, sell it. I just feel like an absolute idiot. I’m a man, sitting here, panicking about a special edition switch, selling out before i buy it. I know that I would be really annoyed if that happened because I wouldn’t be happy enough with basic model. Again, it’s only a bloody design on the switch. Why am I being such an idiot over this? 😭😭😭😭

    I feel you on lesson number 8. When I got Final Fantasy X I didn’t know that X-2 was a download code nor did I know that the Asian version had both games on cart. I’ll probably end up double dipping on that one just to have X-2 on cart.

      @champdancer19 Рік тому +3

      This was one of my successful wait to buys. I did import the SE Asian version for both ff 7 & 8 and ff X & X-2. Yes Nintendo has bigger cartridges but nobody uses them. Nintendo doesn't even use them.

    • @medmuscle
      @medmuscle Рік тому +4

      I didn't know that they did this on Switch until this comment. That's interesting. I already have the X-2 Asian English version for Vita on a standalone cart, so I don't need the Switch version. But it's cool to have that option.
      Why do they do this crap? No physical, no purchase for me. And I am mostly into indies nowadays except for a few Japanese RPGs. If the game isn't playable without a patch, I don't buy it. I'm tired of these companies trying to force digital on everyone.

    • @champdancer19
      @champdancer19 Рік тому

      @@medmuscle because they know consumers would complain if you had to pay 70 USD for a switch game. The extra cost of a bigger game cartridge would be passed to the consumer.

    • @medmuscle
      @medmuscle Рік тому +3

      @@champdancer19 I don't buy that response. The install size of both games combined is 26.9 GB, which is far from massive.
      Even if what you said was true, they could have done a fairly modest release. Then if copies ran out, they could print some more. They know that enthusiasts want these physically. IMO, $70 is plenty fair nowadays anyway. New games have been $60 for decades now. That's considering the game is FINISHED on day one. I would be perfectly fine with digital releases coming out 3 months before physical so that any patches are on disc/cart. Just finish the darn game.
      It's criminal what SE did with the Pixel Remaster. I was able to preorder an Asian English version for Switch from Play Asia. Soon enough, I will no longer support SE. Watch them fk up FF16.

Do it how the ESRB does and make it smaller in black and white! This is a great video that im sure a part 2 could be born. I def have some examples of buying too soon or waiting too long. Predicting when something will come in stock, when they'll go on sale, whether they'll get reprint, or if a regional version will ever happen give me too much anxiety. 😅 I tend to pre-order or buy from import shop if I really want something, get it, put it on my shelf and forget about it. That way I won't feel any regrets of not buying it or miss out on it all together. There aren't many things that catch my eyes though, so I'm not breaking the bank.

    I found this video very fascinating. As a long term collector myself. I've recently decided that based on the fact that. I doubt there are games in my collection I will play a decade from now, I'll only purchase games That have a unique packaging & inserts or ones that I feel have will be my favorite games. Everything else I will buy digitally?. I have several games from the PS2 and PS3 generation that I will probably never play. I don't want that to happen with this current generation even though I enjoy having them on display

    Ryza 1, yep also imported that one from the UK when I saw the NA prices go through the roof before the reprints.
    I've been very surprised that NA seems to be the odd one out on a ton of physical release in terms of availability.
    For both the PS4 and Switch I find myself importing games since EU copies were drastically cheaper on the used market.
    A good chunk of my PS4 and Switch collections are EU/HK/JP games and that has saved me a ton of money.
    I'm also guilty of double dipping, but mainly older games that get HD remasters later on. When choosing between PS4 or Switch versions of modern games,
    I tend to go for the Switch version for portability, unless it has bad performance or part of the game is only a download code on the platform.
    By the way, love what your doing with your figure and art book display, might have to do something similar with my game room =)

    This video was so relatable! Especially the world edition struggle with buying 3DS games on Amazon in particular. I was less knowledgeable about region differences back in 2016-17, so I didn't question when I got Fire Emblem Fates Awakening world edition. I still have it in my collection, and I'd be lying if I said I didn't consider buying just the case and NA region cover to replace it. Also, new setup is looking good! Nice to see so much Trails and FE goodness.

    Good subject as I recently got back into collecting physical games again with the PS4 & Switch. The biggest lesson I would like to share is do it for the fun. I enjoy all my games or will enjoy if I don't play day one. Don't do it for the money or the rare ones.....do it because they are great games. For a fellow RPGer, do it because they are great stories!

    I regret buying too many video games in a way. Until some years ago I only bought the games which I wanted to play immediately, and I played them immediately. But now I buy too many games in advance, before I ever have the time playing them. Games which I really like I can play for dozens if not hundreds of hours, sometimes by replaying them after a while. There is not really time for so many games which I now own.

    I used to import ALL the time because my country didn’t get a lot of games that other countries got; also, North American versions used to literally run better than the PAL versions. Often, import prices were ridiculously expensive, especially when I was a kid. So, as someone who grew up with a lot of the unreasonably high physical copy prices, I’m all about digital. Also, I generally wait on purchases unless they’re first party, most Switch games have tremendous discounts of 60%+ within a year. So, I’m more about waiting until I want to play a game and then taking the next discount-usually, I find the wait is rarely more than 2 months.
    On Switch, my biggest regret is Civilization 6 with all the DLC… the game was great at first, but both times I played it my game ran into 100% repeatable crash deep into the game, and that’s after suffering through TONS of slowdown between turns as the game progressed. It’s more about the time than the money I sank into the game.

    For some reason, I thought it'd be a great idea to get a complete collection of physical PS4 games... didn't realize there were SO MANY at the time, but I often order them online from GameStop. I generally sort by price low to high and grab whatever I don't already have if it's cheap. The thing that drives me nuts, though, is that, since I'm ordering online, I have no idea if the game has the original case/artwork or not. I've wound up with several games without the official case/artwork due to this. I wish GameStop could show whether used games have the box art before I order.

    First off, your shelves look incredible. What great displays pieces. It seems like your move went relatively well, so I'm glad to see that!
    In terms of regrets, I suppose I have three primary "regrets" *Cat furiously typing on the keyboard meme* 😂
    1. Trying to buy everything - I definitely fell into the youtuber trap of wanting massive collections for a bunch of retro consoles because every youtuber has shelves filled to the brim with games from seemingly every home console imaginable. I did enjoy many of the consoles I collected for but I definitely over extended myself and wound buying for so many different consoles, that I didn't know what I wanted. It took a move, a pandemic, and the purchasing of a new house to realize that handhelds we what brought me the most joy. Unfortunately I wasted a lot of time and money and in the end I either sold or gave away all me home console stuff.
    2. Limited Print Games - I think the idea of Limited Print Publishing is great. However, the practice has now morphed into some bastardized version of it's original intent. I have a lot of respect for LRG in how they basically kept the Vita alive in NA but I hate what they have become. And I regret buying alot of Limited Print games just because I thought they'd be a good investment and just because I bought into the hype. This became another instance of either selling or giving away quite a few games.
    3. Buying games just because they were cheap - I think one of the things about social media (Discord, Twitter, UA-cam, etc.), is that you wind up buying games just because someone like Wario 64 posts on Twitter that X game is on sale at it's lowest price and you just have to buy it. I've bought quite a few games like this (Looking at you Balan Wonderworld) and immediately regreted it because often times the games suck and are cheap for a reason. Obviously I've gotten great deals this way because I was patient and didn't buy games Day 1. But clearly I've also gotten burned as a result, which again resulted in selling or giving away games. This last regret in particular has made me consider not collecting for anymore consoles beyond the Switch even if the Switch successor is fully backwards compatible. I just don't know if I have the mental energy to start another console collection, and I don't really wanna sell anything I have at this point to make room.
    So yeah those are my regrets. Hopefully others read this and don't make the same mistakes I did. Once again grats on the move and I can't wait to see how else your house turns out! ^^

    • @orbalology
      @orbalology  Рік тому +1

      Thanks! The move has been going well so far. Just waiting for the last few shelving units to arrive now :)
      I can resonate with these three points as well, not just for game collecting but with other collectibles too. I used to collect a lot of kpop related items & books and definitely overextending myself in a similar way. It took me a long time to sell most things and while I've been able to sell most things at or slightly above what I paid it required a lot of leg work that I don't really want to have to deal with again 😅
      And yup those deal accounts can be a double edge sword 😅

    Most of my collecting regrets have to do with a lack of patience. I’m actually pretty good about not buying the newest games I want if I know I can’t play them immediately, but when there’s a retro/out of print game that I want for the collection that I find in-person I have a hard time not buying immediately even if it’s not the best deal because I get that awful feeling of not knowing the next time I’ll have the opportunity to get a copy that I can inspect before buying.

    Extremely relatable video, had to comment for that absolutely amazing Legend of Heroes shelf.
    My biggest regrets always come from impulse buying games for literally no reason. i.e. games I have no real interest in but something screams to me internally in a specific moment to grab it. Back in the day I'd get the feeling super strong when I would spot an anime game in a big box retailer (which isn't super unusual nowadays).
    There were a couple times this worked in my favor, I got into Shin Megami Tensei because I spotted Devil Survivor 2 at a Fred Meyer and got that urge to scoop it up. But most of the time I'd end up paying full price for weird games like "Conception II" that I haven't even touched after all these years.

    Hi :) I feel like games are like moods. Granted we have to be smart with spending. But I feel like if you buy a game that you are hyped about at $60 and you play it and enjoy it and beat it. Then you get your moneys worth. If you wait till it’s on sale at $20. And you don’t feel the hype or interest anymore and it just gathers dust on the shelf. Then that’s not so good.

    Oh boy, now I'm gonna make you feel even worse regarding "Story of Seasons: Trio of Towns". I bought this new at Amazon in September 2020 for (you probably won't believe this) 9,99 European smackers! I think this was the very month that they finally discontinued the 2/3DS consoles.
    I had kept my eyes peeled for 3DS games before that, knowing that prices would skyrocket once the craze would start after the discontinuation of the consoles, and I made some pretty good bargains.
    I also got a pretty sweet deal on a new New 3DS XL console well after they had stopped producing them. At that time I couldn't believe my luck because I had always wanted to experience the 3D effect, and even though it got mixed reviews, I find it amazing.
    I must say that I generally seem to have some kind of knack for bargains, which for me also happens to be a necessity because of a notoriously tight budget.

    Unfortunately with complete versions of games all 3 do this now with games especially third party multiplatform games I've noticed. Sometimes its better to wait to a games done with dlc all together. Same for digital the physical are slowly being pushed out. In certain cases like square end with phantasy star online them and Sony stopped making copies of their remaster for it but not the switch. And I don't think Xbox is even getting one at all.
    On the physical game issue while I do think all 3 should make more physical copies Nintendo included, I don't think it would make that big of a difference because of of one thing *scalpers* . They're the real culprit because retailers online or offline in person need to have better systems in place ie countering buyers, limiting units per customer in stores etc. I worked in target electronics for years and general retail experience Generally speaking for over a decade plus for a few companies Target, GS, FYR etc. Stores now are limiting people which is good because Nintendo always been a big attraction for scalpers back to the wii days and down get me started on the nes and snes classics lol. They made more for snes stock and I got 2 on day one of release. I got lucky I worked at target at the time so I took that day off waited in line when they opened which was 8 in thr morning and we got a ticket I was 67 of 72. I got the employee discount and a mini snes but the gamestoo across the lot I was first in line before I ran to target. My plan was the opposite but the GS opened an hour after target so I timed it perfectly. Got the target one snd ran to GS I got 2. I'm sure scalpers did this. GS had 15 the first day I was the 4th ticket. It was similar with the switch and ps4 but especially the switch...our special editions we got in were gone within an hour of the date 😂. Now the ps classic not so much that thing collected dust snd had 3 price drops. Crazy it was the polar opposite of the snes mini which were gone in the same day.
    TheBoth Target and GS limited one per customer. Seems it varied by the store best buy the next plaza over had like 100 people in line outside the store 😂 Not that Xbox and PS games, consoles aren't popular but from my experience Nintendo games and consoles seems the highest in demand on release. Its crazy. Thankfully I got lucky with the snes classic unlike the first nes. The switch I waited a month I didn't want to deal with that on launch lol 😅 cool vid you seem nice and are cute. Have a nice week!

    FOMO is a terrible feeling. In the board gaming hobby, since the games are all physical, the prices will skyrocket if a 2nd print is not initiated. At least with video games, digital copies exist if you really want to play it. Great video, once again!

    10:56 While I understand those who want all content to be included in the physical cartridge, I often advise people to evaluate if part of the reason they go physical is the look of the boxart itself. I know some might regret getting a physical expansion pass or a bundle if the box looks like a cheap advertisement full of notices rather than an actual cover.
    I'm personally super nitpicky about this, which is why I've avoided stuff like the Crash Bandicoot N-Sane Trilogy (3 GAMES IN ONE!! ORIGINAL 3 GAMES REMASTERED!! + 2 BONUS LEVELS!!). Some notices are well designed and I don't mind though, such as the "New Funky Mode" on DKC Tropical Freeze, or the download code on Bayonetta 2's European version (as opposed to the American version, which looks super intrusive.)

    I'm in a bind, I bought professor layton Azran i bought sealed a few years ago for 60$ right when it was getting expensive and I never opened it and want to play it. I might sell it and buy an opened copy and use the extra money for something else. But the open copy is really expensive now also!

    Great video and thank you for the advice! I almost fell into fomo when i wanted to buy the Deluxe Edition of NIS Prinny Presents Vol. 2 and Vol.3 when they first released. At the time i didnt want to pay the full price and figured they would drop the price in the future so i held off. Just yesterday i was able to pick them both at gamestop cause they dropped the price on both brand new. Very glad i waited and got them for a comfortable price.

    I got wrapped up in the FOMO for switch games, So Much so that I have a ton of sealed games. Games that I probably will never play either. Just looked at the artwork and gameplay and was like that looks cool! But hey that FOMO paid off because some of those games are worth a lot of money.
