Love this, I had to read about this when I took a science course and did a paper on WADA and testing. The Clear was THATT drug, but there were also side effects like potential sterilization. It's crazy that a novel PED was created, and it couldn't be detected until someone **handed them** a sample 😂

Great video. Doping in Cycling is prevailant as it ever was. I met Floyd Landis who expose Lance Armstrong and he is convinced as well. There is an arms race amongst the cycling teams. About eight or 10 years ago team sky wasn’t a lead. Now jumbo Visma is the leading team in terms of doping as other teams do not know all of the drug. They are taking as they are clearly dominating everyone else in the sport. There is one cyclist named Christian Laporte, who joined their team, and all of a sudden became a much better cyclist. I think other teams are catching up, but they are not as good. Also, there are no test for confusion of one’s own blood transfusion which cyclist take instead of EPO during stage races, the biological passport is known as a joke it does not work as it is easily subverted. There is an expression which is very true only the dopey dopers get caught.

There has been leaps and bound of nutritional development. There has been peculiar development on how breakaways stick, which has a lot to do with the fact that 90gr/hour of carbs isn't considered the hard cap anymore. People consume 120 gr, or even more. When races lasts 5 hours from day to day that alone is 10x times more powerful than any drug in the markets.
Jumbo has SHIT TON of money, by far most of all cycling teams, they have biggest and most powerful roster of cyclists. They have top notch nutritional experts, measurements (both body composition and blood) and coaching.
Once a guy from poor pro team gets into Jumbo (or UAE or Ineos) he/she is in cyclist's heaven at peak of their athletic career. So if guys like Laporte would suddenly develop there are tons of other reasons outside drug use. (and i'm not excluding drug use)
Is there doping? Fuck yeah as there always has been. But all development that has happened as of late is from nutritional, sport science and bike tech side. If anything role of drugs has decreased from Lance's days. Back in those days in training camps people might go for 5 hour rides while fasted and pop sleeping pills to fall asleep back at base. To loose weight. They needed all drugs in the world just to remain functional thru training camp and hit grand tour in excellent shape.
And as far as i know people are still going slower up mountain when compared to days of Lance. Overall speeds are faster but that's due to aerodynamics of bikes and cylists, at mountains the true aerobic endurance is tested. So that indicates that things like EPO are not used nearly as much. And cyclists are regularly tested at races.

@@Second247rugs work. Stop pretending they dont. Or diminishing their capacity to increase performance. You are coping my man. There is a reason people are using anything under the heavens to use drugs instead of "optimising" their nutrition etc. The techniques of training for getting a better performance hasnt changed probably over 50 years. You know what did change? The drugs science and technology being used by athletes. Such as bycicle technology, footwear, swimsuit tech, information on how to use specific drugs for your specific goals. It's not how many oranges you need to eat.
Also just because one drug has gone out of style does not mean 15 of new drugs havent gone in. And up hill speed is just tactics and strategy of pacing.

@@Second247 one other thing that is not mentioned but I think is relevant is the age of top cyclists now and the programs from which the emerged.
Back in the day you joined a team and may not have become the leader of that team till your mid twenties, or later.
Now these kids have raced at high levels all their life an come to the peleton with a proven history and all their performance numbers to boot.
It means the top cyclists come in younger now, when they are at their physical peak for performance and recovery.
And as you alluded to, if you go to a top team and you have a problem with nutrition and recovery, it wilbe detected extremely quickly.
Doping still exists, yes. But no doubt it is at a lower and probably safer level.

@@zerog4261 you raise great points. Power meters has to had a big effect on it, they are in your face all the time. That has to effect the way teams see their athletes, it isn't just odd hill or mountain here and there where you actually could compare the guys. You see their numbers all the time.
I have no idea how bike fitting has improved over decade, but i suspect that process has improved quite a lot.
One thing mentioned is also that you start to have kids who's parents were coached by modern standarts as well so they get good guidance already as a kid. Juan Ayoso from UAE is good example of that, the guy is below 20 years of age, his father was a cyclist and is closely involved in his training and coaching.
Then again Remco has ridden bike for 5 years coming from soccer and is one of the best. Dear lord how great potential he still has!

I'm italian and I'm totally biased because of that, but I'd like to point out something. When everyone starts talking about italian weightlifter being doped because of their results in the last years, I'd like to compare them to the competition. We are not talking about a 17-18 years old guy suddenly performing a C&J world record, Pizzolato (which I would say is the most successful italian weightlifter at the moment) is 27 years old, arguably in his prime and he had a constant growth in his total throughout his entire career, 50kg totals added in 7-8 years is not something I'd consider mind blowing nor unachievable.
That being said, if he'll be tested positive, I'd be the first to say I was wrong, but to me all the odds seems to be against it and I'm almost certain none of our athletes started doping since they were adolescents.

A given sports governing body is only going to care about anti-doping enough that the sport doesn't decrease in popularity and therefore revenue. In cycling, for instance, it wasn't always the case that people cared about doping. Historically, cyclists talked openly about doping. But sometime during the 80s the ideals the fans of the sport wanted cycling to reflect changed to include being "clean". Of course, as we all know, doping continued in secret culminating in the Lance scandale and today the doping control in professional cycling is rather "strict".
I conjecture that fans of team sports simply don't care or don't think about doping at all. At least from what I hear from fans of team sports it is usually viewed as a sport where succes is the result of team work and sports-specific skills rather than physical abilities. I have suggested to fans of football (real football) that every single football player dopes which is usually met with a mix of disbelief and the argument that doping wouldn't help them anyway. So why would the governing body of a given team sport give a shit about testing for doping effectively when the fans don't even care that much anyway? Just test enough to not seem like they are condoning doping and the just keep it hush. Much more profitable that way. And in that case, given the ridiculous amounts of money in team sport, the risk-reward assessment of doping vs. no doping seems obvious. Because being able to run faster, jumb higher and accelerate actually does matter and it can win you big bucks.

    • @aarononon
      @aarononon Рік тому

@@Erik-gx3dd I get your point, but I think that the majority of fans would care, given the amount of misunderstanding around the issue - look at the public backlash to Lance Armstrong for example. Like if Man City was found to have given PEDs to loads of its players then I think a large share of other clubs' fans would shout that they should be stripped of their title. And given the amount of damage that could cause I find it surprising that there haven't been any major whistleblowing cases or doping scandals or anything like that, just the odd "took the wrong inhaler", "weight loss pills", "drank a funny tea", excuses.
In my opinion, it would make a lot of sense if doping was prevalent in football (I know a lot less about US sports but guess it's the same), but if that's right then I don't understand why nobody has tried to come forward and cash in on it yet

Because bodybuilders, who aren't drug tested, live such long, healthy lives? (Just in case anyone hasn't been following the sport: no, they don't.)
Truth is, given free rein, athletes will take as much pharmaceutical aid as they need to in order to win over the next person - who is doing likewise. Long term health considerations are either unknown or ignored in the heat of the moment. When you add in the human tendency to believe that they're the careful ones, bad things only happen to those other idiots, I'm pretty sure we can foretell the results without doing the experiment: athletes will not become safer given licence to dope.

After all, it's not that drug rules were removed and suddenly bodybuilders' health improved, is it?
