My favorite thing about Earthbound is the conceit that these little kids have demi-god-like psychic powers. They can teleport, bring stars down, heal, it's such an awesome juxtaposition.
@@pakalupapito5578 how is she more important than Ness? edit, ah I guess you mean the final battle. fair enough. but in that case you could argue that YOU are the most important character haha
@@richarddavis8863 I think she's equally as important as Ness for a few key reasons. Ness would have died to Carpainter without Paula's help (Franklin Badge). Ness and Paula would have remained captured without Paula being able to contact Jeff via his dreams (she use this type of telepathy a few other times too). Paula solos Giygas, the party would lose without her Prayer.
This is all really speculation, but Lucas having a support based PK list and Kumatora having an offense one is because what abilities one is able to awaken to directly relates to their mental and emotional state. Kumatora is the tough type so her mind grants her the ability to use powers that harm her enemies. Lucas is timid and nervous, so his mind grants him the ability to protect himself and others. Lucas probably would not have had the mindset necessary to comprehend starstorm during the events of the game, nor the lived perspective to truly comprehend kumatora's mindset, but smash bros sometimes likes to vaguely imply that lucas has grown since then into a competent youth who seeks adventure, so hes probably more prepared to learn it. Because of the immense mental training it took poo to learn starstorm, its possible that perhaps ness and his friends just didn't have the mental fortitude and maturity necessary to share skills before gaining the perspective and life experience at the end of their journey.

Paula definitely needs more spotlight for sure. She’s probably my fav female character and I wish she could’ve had her own section, even if it was a simple piece about her getting kidnapped at four side or happy happy village
I always like the apeal of the clay models. American or Japan, both versions are really pleasing to look at. It was really smart that they've decided to model Ness after his clay model for smash and I hope they will do the same if Paula, Ninten or any of the main party members that gets added in the future.
Poo and Paula do appear in ness's final smash and jeff is an assist trophy, all with that same style So it's safe to say any mother/earthbound characters added will roughly match that
I remember when I first got into EarthBound I had a phase where Paula was my favorite character, and honestly she still is. She's adorable, badass, and she prays when she's in doubt (as well as having that broken-ass PK Freeze). Love that lil angel lol 💜💖
I heard that when they were remaking the clay models for the American localization, Nintendo of America specifacally asked to cover the clay models in garbage juice, to go along with the marketing of the game.
I like that Paula didn't get her own section in Earthbound. She was a damsel in distress pretty much the entire game having to be reacued 3 times(once by Ness, 2nd by Jeff in Threed and again in Fourside). They wrote and designed her really well. Shes not a Mary Sue nor weak and worthless as a party member. Her PSI prowess is awesome, but even during gameplay its obvious she still needs to be protected because she just can't take hits like the boys. Her ability to Pray and ultimately pray to God for victory is something ive never seen in any Video game other than Earthbound. We have to remember that not only was EB released 30 years ago and times were different, but i also think EB was simply going for a traditional approach with her character. She is very feminine and plays into that role well and traditionally. I mean shes in all pink with ribbons and hits things with a Frying Pan lmao.
Great video! I always personally preferred the Japanese clay models because of the height consistency between all 4 of the kids and I'm really pissy that way but even without that part I just really liked them looking short in general.
Hey MonkeyNess! I really enjoyed today's video and I'm looking forward to seeing more in this series if there are even clay models for Jeff and Poo. I wish the smash model made Ness a bit tubby like he was described in game. He was described by a police officer as fat and another person said he lost a few pounds at the end of the game. Like no obese like Porky but overweight.
One cool thing about her American version is her sense of agency. Instead of breaking down if Ness can't save her, American Paula says she would just break out of her cell if Ness took too long I never noticed that American Paula didn't have a bow. That's wacky You should have mentioned that her name is Paula Jones! SHE HAS A LAST NAME! ITS JONES... I think at least. I'm pretty sure it says that in the strategy guide
I thought this would tell us differences between the translations and how it changes the character of Paula somehow, so far you’re just talking about the literal clay models? I hope theres more to this.
So were the american clay models done at NoA? Forgot to add, if you looks closely at Smash Paula has the less round face that the american model had, which I guess also falls into what you said about her "slimming down".
Weird thing to ask, but is there a confirmation the models are made of clay? I read an interview of Itoi where he says they are paper mache with a shiny finish. Also, I love the way Earthbound does its protagonist characterization through gameplay. Ness being a healer whose most powerful attack is just thinking about his favorite thing. When Paula is kidnapped again, one can say that’s a cliche but making players annoyed with her small HP feel the loss of her damage output was essential. Without it we’d have people talking about her being useless.
I think Paula’s story would involve her walking around Twoson fighting cranky ladies and little girls with PSI before being kidnapped by Carpainter. Then she calls Ness. Carpainter would beat Paula in a fight.
Even the Player's Guide's scans aren't great, less distortion around the edges, but still not very good because of the poor lighting in the initial pictures.
Just a detail, Im pretty than the american clay models for Paula and Ness don´t exist. they just Photoshoped the japanese models, so you could tecnically recreate the american ones if you fina good HD art of the japanese ones.
