Just a tip.. I’d suggest placing the masking on the part that you want to retain (I.e. the truck) rather than the bit you’re chopping off. Sure it’s useful to place your marks on, but it’s there to protect the truck during the cutting..
Just followed your video last night doing my viper cut. It turn out great! The only I would add use a box cutter on the finder lining. It saved me so much time.
I've done this mod to my 4R and thinking of doing it to my Tundra once I get ready for beefier tires but haven't found anything on the Tundra like this. Probably the first Tacoma I have seen do this as well. Great job very clean lines
Appreciate it! I'm definitely not the first Tacoma lol maybe just the first to do a detailed install video You might be able trim a little with the Tundra but I'd assume the fog lights would get in the way.
Thanks man! It's definitely sketchy but came out nice. I'd likely have to cut the bumper for an aftermarket bumper anyway so I wasn't too worried about messing it up.
Maybe try and install the edge trim with a little black RTV in the edge trim channel. That should fill the gap and help it stay on better i would think. Good video. I was thinking about doing this on my tacoma.
Im doing the same cut until I decide what bumper to go with. A hole saw on the drill would have been perfect for getting your radius. Thats what ill try. Thanks for the vid!
@@KnightWheelsMedia I'm actually leaning toward a hidden winch install to keep the weight down, so the cut will give me clearance for the tires and ill just need to cut the hole for the fairlead in the original black face.
Yup haha I hesitated because I was worried about the disc breaking off, which it did lol Thought process went like this: "hmm maybe I should just switch to the metal disc this one doesn't seem strong enough" "..." "nah it should be fine" *starts to make cut and wheels breaks off and hits me in the face* "yeahhhh shoulda went with the metal blade"
Just did a quick highway drive (75mph or so) and didn't notice any extra noise. The roof rack with traction boards & plano case make for quite a bit of wind noise so that likely drowned out any noise from the fender liner flapping, if it did.
Already got it a delivered lol. I took a gamble on a hiline chionese knockoff front bumper, its identical to the body armor one. Planning to repiant it, drill 2 holes in for my existing LED pods, Viper cut, then cab mount chop and wheel spacers. upcoming project..@@KnightWheelsMedia
First off, you are crazy for cutting up your nice bumper. for the frontier, that would be an ideal solution for adding 33's or 35's. could the liner melt enough to pop in then measure it to fit the edges then cut? it does look aggressive from the front.
I wish you would of showed a before abs after side by side pic? Your a brave man I dont have the balls to do that to my Tacoma trdpro. Good video and it does clean!
Thanks man! Yeah probably should have shown before/after in the video. I have a trailtacoma.com article coming out soon that details the process and I include before & after photos in that.
Wheels are Icon Vector 6 in Bronze - 17x8.5" 0 offset Tires are 275/70R17 Falken Wildpeak Lift is the Eibach Pro Truck Kit with Icon 3-leaf AAL - about 2" all around
@@chazarkansas1366 I still like it. Yes stuff gets thrown all over but there are ways to remedy that. I wasn’t too worried about it so I just cut out the inner fender rather than trying to bend it nicely lol
@@KnightWheelsMedia Ive already cut my bumper once for my lowprofile bumper so im not concerned about the cut. I like the look of this, I would like to keep the inner fender though. Ill look around and see what people are doing. I saw a video of someone heat gunning it but they did a really shitty job.
Great video! I plan on doing this soon and this video made me realize it’s not as bad to do has I thought. I think I noticed that your running the Eibach lift on your truck. How do you like it overall and how has it done for you while off roading etc?
It's great! A huge upgrade over stock. Much less bouncy so there's less body roll when driving on road. Off-road it definitely helps to keep the truck stable. I have a few videos about it but that's the jist of it haha
Yeah definitely! Think I briefly mentioned that at the beginning. A lot of people just cut it out with no issue so I'll see how dirty it gets next time I'm offroad. If it gets excessively dirty I'll find some type of thing rubber or plastic mat to put in.
haha well cutting your bumper would technically void your bumper warranty I'd suppose... meaning that once you cut the bumper, you can't go to Toyota asking for a new bumper unless something else was wrong with it. However if there is something else wrong with the bumper that can't be linked to the cut, then you'd probably be okay. Maybe worth calling your dealer to ask any specific questions as these are just my guesses/opinion.
If you go 33" or bigger you'll still need to do a cab mount chop to avoid any rubbing. I still rub on it in some random situations lol but with the viper cut you should be clear up front for most tire sizes within reason
It's the stock tow hook that comes on the TRD Off Road Tacomas. I have another video where I painted the hook and the skid as they're both black from the factory.
Zack Whitney looks cool but if I were you I’d look into a tow hook that’s rated if you do any off-roading. I don’t think the one I have is rated as a recovery point. Think it’s just considered a “tie down” point
I think if you would have folded the inner fender in would have made a cleaner look, or a least put something in there so I isn’t just open. Not sure why you just didn’t just replace the whole bumper
Yeah some people take a heat gun to the inner fender to fold it. I figured it'd be easier to just cut. I can always go back and add a cheap, custom inner fender if I feel the need. I'll likely replace the whole bumper, or part of it, in the future. In the meantime, this is just a cool mod to do to get a slightly more aggressive look and some extra clearance. I had some rubbing up front on the inner fender that this cut solved. Thanks for watching!

Not sure about the liner on the frontier but the Tacoma liner was decently movable with some heat and pressure.
You all keep calling this a viper cut when we all know it's the Tacobra cut.
I will use this term from now on. Thank you mrfloggingshagg.

Looks like a cheap solution for gaining approach angle but what happens when your steps on the side rails get caught up on some big rocks or logs?
It happens (bent them in my last video). Sliders are in the works lol
Has there been any issue with the elements getting up behind the bumper where the wheel liner got cut out?
Yes but only when going through mud and what not at speed while off roading. Normal road driving it probably isn't much of an issue.
