Road to Cybertruck | Baja

- Last fall, Tesla engineers drove two pre-production Cybertrucks from San Diego to Los Cabos. The goal - to close the design loop with a real world test, find the limits, and break things along the way.

Oh boy. Biggest crossover since Avengers
i was waiting for this
Teach them how to actually off-road test a vehicle
Yeah fr
As someone who grew up in AZ doing a lot of backcountry driving, if you did that much mileage and only had a broken windshield then that is a testament as to how bombproof those trucks are. Our mantra was "It isn't 4 wheeling until something breaks" pretty much everytime when you are driving hard. Long washboard roads with cuts and washouts is extremely fatiguing, esp after a couple hours of that, so much concentration when you are running stock vehicles and have to baby them over sections. I liked the amateur hour feel to this too, like not knowing how to deal with cactus (two rocks), not wearing white in heat/sun, no inclinometer, etc. Not bagging, we have all been there, fun stuff, and in one trip you logged as much as most. Epic footage, amazing vehicles, green season desert, those amazing saguaros. Thanks!
The engineers might say that black blocks more UV...
@@thatteslacat6334 problem with time in a lab vs actual time in the desert sun. one case of heatstroke will set anyone straight
The truck isn't even bulletproof. Furthermore, if you even give a shit about this abomination, you're not living in a war-torn country. Why do you *need* a bombproof truck?
these are radio connected , well organized teams with BRAND NEW CARS, NOTHING should happen in this very very mild conditions.
2 rocks?? Never enter the back country without your multi tool pliers....
My friend was a Tesla Tech in Mira Mar for many years. Before you guys even announced the cyber truck we spoke about emailing the higher ups about doing this exact thing. I have a cousin whose won the Baja 1000 a few times now in trophy spec. Unfortunately about 3 years ago my friend who worked for you guys got hit by a drunk driver and passed away. Seeing this video was pretty special. Brought back good memories and was happy to see it come to fruition.
Not to sound weird but I worked with your friend. I have had many talks with him about the same thing lol. RIP, B. He was a great dude.
@AlcoholicCelery not weird at all. He was a incredible person, amazing dad, and great friend. What happened to him was terrible. Tesla or space x should name a car or rocket after him. He genuinely was the most incredible dude ever.
Respect the honesty of the cracked windshield... exponentially increases trust in the process 👍!
Yeah you need to build back a lot of trust after all the false promises elon made regarding this car.
I feel like they did that on purpose to show the rigidity of the truck. even though the windshield broke, any other truck would have much more damage
It's to distract you from the countless other failures the Cybertruck faces.
Looks like it worked.
@@poofpuff9107We can’t know that without testing other trucks. The cracked glass denotes body flex which is not optimal.
@@PumpUptheJam81I thought it would have signaled that there was not enough body flex because it transmitted all the shock to the winshield instead of absorbing it.
Props for showing your products breake, get damaged etc. A welcome change in comparison to other companies, were nothing is allowed to fail on screen.
break?
TRUE!
100% agree
yeah, always make sure your car brake safely
Oh yes, thanks for keeping an eye on my grammar. It's now corrected.
Greatly appreciate that you are willing to show the truth of the drive. If GM did this video, you would never see anything break, or the charging challenges.
Yeah but GM actually makes a real truck.
@@BryanSeitzthis is Tesla first truck let that sink in 😊 Ford GM Chevy been making trucks for decades Tesla will come out with another truck in the future that will demolish competition. It already does in many ways people are just living in denial because of the looks and it has a battery instead of loud tailpipes 😂😂😂
DEMOLISHING THE COMPETITION!?!?! I hope you mean other EVs. Because I've been off roading and overlanding for 40 years it's going to be another 20 years or more before id trust my life in the middle of a 100-degree Texas desert. or a below zero Colorado Rockies trip in one of these. Yes Baja is a testing ground for trucks. The biggest test in the Baja 500 and 1000 is distance and speed. both test the Cyber truck would fail. This is a city truck. A MALL CRAWLER. You can take it to all the photo op locations that real trucks frequent and it still doesn't change what it is. Like the Honda Ridgeline.@@gzfashions

It's a ridiculous vehicle for that trip. Just is. That was a waste of a trip unless they can lighten the vehicle, find completely different tires, and add range. 50 yr old VW's could beat the Cybertruck on that route.

A true advert for the Cybertruck. More than that, this could be a series for all future builds, gives great depth to the engineering work that is validated.

To be clear, I’m not saying this is revolutionary. As a Tesla shareholder, that understands Tesla doesn’t run ads, my point is this video helps showcase that the cars are tested by the engineers who design and build them. I’d call that validating, they’re building to spec and testing output, making improvements along the way.

I still want a short 2 door one. Like, smaller than a wrangler but keep a bed back there instead of a second row.
Also, Rubicon trail - ready.
The glass didn't break from the impact, it cracked from the chassis twisting. 1 small inexpensive change will allow that glass to float and move independently from the chassis drastically decreasing the chances of it cracking from the structure twisting.
Breaking is breaking, and it still broke. They already sold the trucks like this so too late.
Another huge tesla L💀
In my opinion it did crack from the structure being too stiff. The system instead of dampening the impact, transferred the force into the windshield. My guess is they hit the suspension bump stops. The body mounts couldn't quite dampen the shock wave... and that structure / stressed skin communicated the shock wave across it and into the glass. I don't know a good fix, probably more suspension travel. Hard to say without driving the thing. Not very practical though to float a windshield. Most automotive windshields today are a stressed member of the body. They are designed to help strengthen the structure in case of roll over / accident.
Awesome work guys. All those bumps and rough roads for that many days straight will test anyone’s will. We owe you a lot of gratitude!!
That's built tough enough for me! Great job Tesla team!!

Yeah hit a hard bump and destroy your window. That’s tough.
You aren't very tough are you💀
Glad y'all tested it on baja! Truly the best testing grounds. Maybe a Trophy spec cybertruck soon? 🤣
driving in Baja does not equal the Baja 500 or 1000 the cyber truck would never finish the actual course in a competitive time.
Having engineers drive it who are cautious by nature and dont know how to drive off road was not a test.
@13christbane and that's why it is a real world test. Not a race course test for the baja 500/1000 .
Driving cautiously is still key for getting yourself and your ride in one piece. its incredibly hard getting stuck in the wilderness waiting for help even if they have starlink.

This video is fire, thank you Tesla for keeping it real!
More videos like this please!!!! Really shows how amazing the Tesla engineers are and how much they stand behind the product!
This video will make all other auto makers extremely envious! This is how cool and tough is made!!!
As a shareholder, if you really want to impress the truck community it’s time to go out and build a race rig for Baja. AWD, Modular Battery, Long Travel Suspension. The 250 is next week, so that’s too much to ask. There is more than enough time to prepare for the 500 and 1000.
Perhaps they should just focus on delivering quality trucks to customers…. As a reservation holder. I think this is more important. The community will do the mods🤦🏻♂️
It can't actually compete in Baja😂 Do you know literally anything about motorsport?

Can you guys please design a cool motorized solar panel that unfolds out of the bed that gives us 30-50 miles of range in a 8-10 hour period while we're parked at work or off grid? That would be incredible.
Get your workplace to install solar panels and level 2 chargers, then anyone can charge!
@@Nphen you're missing the point. A bed stored solar panel would allow you to charge anywhere, any time, in any parking spot, or in the middle of nowhere.
People like me don't work in one place. I'm a pilot. I want to push a button and a 10'x5' solar panel unfolds from my bed in 30-60 seconds.
@@maximusjoseppi5904that would’nt be efficient. Elon spoke about this on a podcast with Rogan. You will need about the space size of 4 cyber trucks to even get 10 miles of range when it’s sunny…. BUT You will have extra weight as well so your battery will consume more energy carrying a solar panel at the top. Smart idea but not currently effective with today’s technology.
They did have an idea to make the tonneau cover solar. That would even allow charging while driving. But that would be pretty insignificant power generation, definitely not enough to justify the cost of such a system. Even scaling up to a much larger panel that covered the entire roof and bed would only generate 4~5kWh/day...which would be about 10~12 miles.
And to the other guy's point, a solar canopy in airport parking lots seems way more practical. There's so much space to do something like that. Unfortunately, you can't benefit from something that isn't there, which I think is your point.
If every airport has Level 2 chargers or Supercharger stalls, you can charge... anywhere. As every Tesla owner already knows. For boondocking, there are plenty of off-grid solar-powered battery backup systems available. The bed will easily hold 10kw of solar, or look at a Lightship trailer. A 50 sq ft solar panel will "just" unfold from your trunk in 30-60 seconds would take years to develop and cost you $30k for the wattage of a $5k solar system.
The step that broke the windshield was huge TBH
Super cool, I was a co-driver for the class eleven team (Bochito) that won the Baja 1000 in 2018. Epic journey, race, and early AM finish line victory for the VW 🪲 This terrain is a BEAST. Good go. 🤙🏽😎🖤
