Straight up midi noob here. Thank you so much for this video, I'm currently only half way thru it and it's already the best video for explaining midi/ableton/helix that I've found in literally weeks of searching. Thanks also to Justin Chan for linking your video to his also awesome collection of helix and ableton related videos.
A giant THANK YOU from sunny Singapore! I’m a music director who’ll be field testing Ableton for cues/click/pads this Sunday service. Amazing stuff! I envision that automating my preset/snap changes will free me up to focus on my team and MD them better even as I play lead guitar. Question for you: have you considered going Variax to minimise swapping guitars between songs?
would you happen to have a video explaining everything involved in setting up lighting cues. If I understand some of it I think it requires 2 computers linked somehow.... but that's about as much as I've heard. Also, is there a way to have patches on the helix (specifically for going to chorus/verse/bridge) while also changing the guitar effects patches on the helix or would that require another controller?
So thankful for this video. I am having an issue with exporting these midi clips not retaining the Sub setting on the patch change clip. I have to change the Sub every time. It won't be a big issue as I won't need to change set lists by midi I just need to make sure I'm set to the correct one at the beginning of the set. I use 1 setlist for church and 1 for my band. If you, or anyone else seeing this, knows why it might be doing this and how to fix it, I'd really appreciate the help
Hey Nicolas! Glad you found the video helpful. In theory you can program any midi signal to output from abelton. You just have to know how it's controlled. either with MIDI CC or MIDI Note control. So you could control anything you want with it as long as you know how to get a midi signal to the device and know what midi cues to send.
@benshaw4197 Thanks for answering Ben. Yes! I found the midi cc and value in the Midi CC section of the handbook. With a little patience, it works :-) See you
Note that if you are using this with Kemper in a live situation you have to note 2 things : - you'll have to offset your Program Changes by 1. - make sure your spare Ableton is not sending Program Changes also. If so, it will mess the Kemper from time to time and always in an impredictible way.
I'm running Ableton Live 9.7.7 and am running into a strange problem. I can get Ableton to change the patch and the snapshots in the initial project file. When I open a song file and begin to insert MIDI clips to make changes I can insert Patch Change and Snapshot 1, but Snapshots 2-8 are RIDICULOUSLY long and won't allow me to insert them. Have you ever run into that?
Josh Rutledge I have not seen that. I’ve noticed all kinds of midi related weird warping of file lengths in live 9. I’ve recently upgraded to 10 and haven’t noticed those glitches anymore.
Does anyone know why the Helix would bounce between two different snapshots after the midi is fired? It will change to the snapshot then bounce to a different one.
I've looked a ton of videos about this and this is hands down the best, clearest, most comprehensive one. Legend!
Glad it helped!
Thank you for this !!! Most helpful video we've found on UA-cam

You just gave me a joyful day. Thank you
Thanks! It's a really cool tips that I couldn't find in any other description. Especially, for a snapshot changing!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you for sharing this video!
This Method works on Vsts as well. I am using Neural Dsp Plugins and this hack works great. Thanks bro!
Incredibly helpful video. Thank you!!

Can I turn on and off blocks too with MIDI?
Is it easy enough to export the midi file so I can run it in an external device called m live b beat which allowed backing track and midi playback !?
Hi! Thanks a lot! I wonder how i could pilot other effects, for example looper with the midi command. Can you help? Regards, Nicolas

Check if you don't have 2 MIDI messages sent on the note on and note off.
Do you know how to change helix native ?
Helix native uses the same concept just change the output of the midi clip to the track you have native on
