I got my Helix yesterday, bought a couple WT patches, and stuck them in there. They didn't sound right. I then found myself thinking, "I wish they had a tutorial video showing me about their settings." Thanks fellas! Setting the outputs to instrument and mic level did the trick! Problem solved.
So for anyone who doesn't have any other knowledge, there is a major benefit to the global eq above just making small adjustments for a specific venue. While they are correct in the video, there is more to it. The helix is a full range device and guitar amps are not. So you may find certain frequencies are present in your tone that don't sound great. When I got mine it wasn't a "bad" sound but there was definitely something there I was fighting against. Rolled off the ultra highs and ultra lows (about 110hz and 2.0khz respectively... adjust to taste) and it made a massive difference in feel. Not so much the overall tone that the helix puts out but definitely got rid of some unnatural frequencies I didn't want in there. Totally worth trying out.
This video was far from boring - even if you are familiar with all of these settings you sometimes forget about what they do or that there is feature you never use and might need to be reminded of - that is why a watched this again. Thanks. (I copied this link for just such occasions)
Thank you very much for explaining these settings. I personally needed this. I like the fact the settings you create as simply awesome. Your created settings are just about perfect. I want to eventually purchase them all. Great work and thank you.
The pad is there to help the models respond correctly to active instruments. You guys mentioned active electric guitars but I think it’s also important to note that acoustic guitars and many basses have active circuits. If any aGtr or bass players are using HX products or a POD GO and struggling, this could help. The line level outputs are useful if anyone is using this to power their home studio monitors. The HX line is incredibly useful for guitarists recording at home so I hope people are taking advantage of this. You just have to remember to change it back when you go out to the gig haha Lastly, I think the “snapshot recall/discard” function is very important when creating your presets. During the creation of a preset, it’s important to set this to “recall” but once you’re ready to go out to a gig/service, it’s probably best to set this to “discard” so that you Know exactly what you’re getting when you’re switching snapshots. Thanks for the video, fellas. Tons of great info in here.
I personally use snapshot set to RECALL for building snapshots and going back and forth so you can tell their diferences right away. Then, when I have my snapshots ready to play, I switch to DISCARD and always stay safe in live situations
Hi, I just want you to know that you are one of my inspirations. I chose acoustic guitar because of you. I like your music. One of my favourite songs from your music is I Have Decided To Follow Jesus. I love you guys. God bless you
I got the AC30 patch for Helix Native and couldn’t get two of the three patches to work. Turns out I had the problem they mention at 16:07-since I have no volume pedal if or my DAW, the volume pedal blocks were at zero. Took me a while to figure that one out! :)
EXP Pedals - haha...so twice I've now gone to do a swell during a salvation call and played full volume because EXP 2 volume was not set to global despite the pedal being all the way off 😩 Great tip guys!
Big fan of the Global EQ because it makes dialing in some of those difficult amps and cabs much easier to work with. My recommendation though is to be really light-handed with it. You gotta remember the kind of EQing you do on a high-gain amp with a 4x12 is gonna be quite different than how you'd treat a low/mid gain amp with 1x12, so you need to go easy on it and only take down what's ABSOLUTELY necessary. Even though I'm a hard rock/metal guy, I like different sounds...so I don't want to lock myself out of any possibilities! If you're gonna use Global EQ, just give it a slight shelf on the highs and lows (I drop low-lows down to 40Hz and extreme highs down to like 16k) and then find that one nasty frequency in the upper-mids (maybe 6k-ish) and notch that down .5 to 1.5 dB...just enough to smooth out the excess that digital presents inherently, but not enough to ruin the character of any of the gear. If you keep it light, Global EQ is gonna make using the Helix much more enjoyable to the first-time user starting off. I wish someone had've given me that advice when I bought a Helix, because the learning curve on it is pretty big--I wasn't a fan at first. The HD500X was much easier to dial-in, and for a moment, I contemplated returning the Helix and getting the HD500X that I sold back. But now that I've figured out much of the Helix, I'm VERY glad I didn't!
I'm trying to decide between the Helix and the HX Stomp. I'm not a performer (yet) I just need a silent (headphone) home practice solution. That said it'd be cool to have a variety of amp sims and effects to "play" with. Helix is likely more than I need now, but it'd be nice to be future-proof and not have to ever worry about having enough foot switches or insufficient I/O. On the other hand, I don't want to waste money on features I will never use. A tough decision and it gives me anxiety lol.
Hi, just come across your channel and I’m finding loads of good stuff for the Helix including this video. It’s great that you talk about these settings parameters and what they do as no one else really goes into this in this amount of detail, so thank you! I do have a question though, a problem with the Helix that I can’t resolve. When I import a preset from anyone who shares them, it ALWAYS sounds muffled and at a low volume compared to my own presets I’ve built. I use an FRFR speaker by the way, but the fix I do everytime is I have to tweak the downloaded preset heavily, to get it to match the EQ and volume of my others, and I’m sure this is too much hard work and there must be something I am doing wrong with maybe the basic helix settings? Please help! Thanks
I keep the pad off, BUT you can set it for individual presets in the preset input block, so you don't necessarily need to compensate for the pad on the the effect block.
hey guys!! love your videos. quick question, i bought a lot of patches and when i turn on my helix and amp i hear a big noisy sound is that normal? if you have a video how to fix that please send me a link. for example every time i switch from one snapshot to another the fuzz sound comes out. i notice that every time you guys play a song and change the snap shots i do not hear a fuzz noisy sound. help!!!
Hey guys, now that it's a couple years later, are you setting the volume knob so it only controls the 1/4" outputs? That seems to be the most common practice. Then the unity gain mic level XLR out can't get changed/bumped accidentally, but you can still control the volume to a stage amp, FRFR, etc.
Question!! Have you ever put he helix up against the head rush? They seem to be pretty close, why is the helix $600.00 more? Is there that big of a difference?
I got mine a few days ago. First thing I did was update the firmware. It came with 3.10 and it updated to 3.15 from February 2, 2022 and brothers, many things have changed from this video. All the menus are different. All the ideas and functions are the same, but where they reside to be edited is totally new. New users just beware. Maybe an updated video? Even the HX Edit software has changed.
@Worship Tutorials - I'm thinking of pulling the trigger on the Helix in a few weeks. I've been waiting because I just started playing guitar at a new church (new to me). Unfortunately, this church is a bit technologically challenged, not of the Pastor's doing but former worship leaders who basically stole the in ear monitor system. We have one wedge on the stage which is in front of the worship leader. The strange thing is that the acoustics on this stage are awesome and you can hear every instrument and vox. Right now, I'm using a Blackstar 60 watt combo with an HX FX! It sounds wonderful. But I like the fact that I could be utilizing 8 snapshots versus 4 on the HX FX. So I'm thinking I could send one channel to the FX Loop of the combo amp and the other to the house for now. So my question is, how good does the Helix sound direct to the house? Are the dynamics of swells, or even playing softer translated to the house? Eventually we wil go to in ears once the Pastor releases the funds to us. She is giving us a blank canvass for our worship team. Just wanted to know your thoughts!
what kind of borad are you plugging into? cause most xlr have a parallel TRS that is on a dual function input jack or will have a seperate input receptacle cause all MIc premaps color your tone. and this is how to by pass that
I have two powercab +112. I can use the Link cable for either one and it works fine. When I try to link one into the other the second one shuts off. I have the right cables. Any suggestions?
Great video! I recently got the matchless JMP helix patch and I’m loving it. I had a question though; my sound technician told me at several services and rehearsals that when running stereo, one of the channels is putting out less signal than the other. Is this how the patch was designed or is there some setting I need to change. The sound tech was able to match the levels from his end but i want to fix the issue to make it easier on him. Let me know, thanks!
Jonathan Tise perhaps the monitor levels aren’t even, that feasibly could cause your issue. You probably have went down that road already. If it’s coming through the house then one of the channels needs to be reduced or bumped up. I’m sure that can be adjusted.... I think. One last thing, your stereo pedals, what is the “spread” set at? Try “10” if you see fit for your work flow, “10” maximizes the stereo field width. That’s said, we are now in the personal preference zone making my 2 cents possibly worthless lol. Jason Sadites has many very good tutorials for the helix making it so much easier to navigate to the result you may be seeking. He just rebooted his very first vid in his “creating a great tone” series.
The volume in my Helix completely mutes after about 3 seconds of not playing. It then takes a half second or so to come back on once I start playing again. I learned from one of your previous videos that it is important to not play sometimes. Can I turn this off?
I just bought a Helix Floor and really appreciate this video. I have a question about Snapshot mode, which Brian exclusively uses. If you play a song that doesn’t have 8 Snapshots, what do you name the other switches/snapshots that you’re not using?
I kinda wish you could do the discard/recall for snapshots on a patch by patch basis. Because for Artist or Genre patches I want recall, so when I start a song and I can setup each snapshot quickly with just my feet for that song, and then I just bank up and back again without saving to avoid losing the OG settings. But, when I use song specific patches (like back in the before-time when I played sets at church), I want it to discard cause I have each song section how I want it and when I go to the verse I don't want a Rat on by accident.
I get a lot of static with the volume dialed all the way, and also struggling with the issue of when I hit drives, the volume is way WAY high, not balanced with other sounds How can I play with this to find a balance If this makes sense
no unity does not mean "one", it means "same" you set everything to unity to try and keep the sound at the same consistent level. It's not really a term that's used by guitarists that much simply because we haven't needed to set our levels In Sync with anything else before so. If you were a guy who liked your amp at seven you put that at 7:00 every time you like to have five that's what would be. Nowadays with the patches it has a little bit more significance but really more to do with the world of audio engineering. Cause you can't set all the volumes with the faders if you so choose. But you would end up with a mixing board with feeders all over the place which isn't just a aesthetically aggravating scenario it's also much more difficult to adjust volume the further you get away from unity because if you look at a fader the same distance that your movie theater well it's close to unity is ± 3 decimals. That same half an inch at the bottom of the feeder sometimes it's 20 decibels and so if you need to make the small 3/4 decimal changes like you normally have to do trying to do that precisely when you're close to the bottom of the feet around it's not an easy task. So, you would set all your faders to unity gain and then adjust just the input level of each track, so the entire track is that the level that you want before you start mixing or I guess before you start the second phase cause that's the first phase is a static mix which is just purely getting your levels right settings unity
Hey would you guys be willing to check out the Line 6 Helix LT for a video? It seems very similar to the regular Helix Floor, with minor differences and about 2/3 of the price. I'm not sure whether buying the floor is worth it after looking into the LT.
I have the LT and the only limitation is that in stompbox mode you only have 8 footswitches instead of 10. I mostly use snapshot mode and that’s exactly the same on both devices so I would say go for the LT especially for the price. Also, check out the Line 6 video by Paul Hindmarsch he does a pretty good comparison.
PAD stands for Per Amplified Device. It is for just that, things like keyboards and preamp pickups that run on 9 volt battery power. Mystery solved. Standard guitar picks do not need a pad nor do micra phones. Guitar in = no PAD.
