Carpenters - Trying to Get the Feeling Again

- This was the third video I ever made and my first Carpenters music video.
The song is a work lead recorded in 1975 for the album Horizon, but never used due to lack of space on the vinyl LP. For years Richard had thought the recording was lost, but in 1992 when Richard was working on the Carpenters Master Karaoke CD (Japanese release only), he found the recording on the "Only Yesterday" tape.
In 1995, Richard included the recording on the "Interpretations" CD, which commemorated the Carpenters 25th anniversary with A&M.
From the liner notes of "Interpretations."
Karen and I recorded this track in January 1975, during the "Horizon" sessions. We did not include it in that release, as we felt that that set ultimately featured an adequate amount of ballads. For some unknown reason, the title was never catalogued, and over the years Karen, Roger and I assumed it had been inadvertently discarded. On November 29, 1991, while remixing tracks for our Japanese "Karaoke" album, Roger found the title on the multi-track tape containing "Only Yesterday". The impending release of Interpretations provided an excellent reason for me to orchestrate and complete the production. Strings were recorded on the 31st of May 1994. Roger and I mixed the selection on June 6th. Karen's flawless performance of the song is a "work lead," solely intended to familiarize bassist Joe Osborn and drummer Jim Gordon with the melody. (One can hear the lyric sheet being turned over by Karen as she segues from the end of the first chorus into the second verse.) For this reason alone, the lead would have been re-recorded had we decided to complete the production in 1975. Certain sections of the lead also would have been "doubled" hence the "effect" used in the mix. Karen sings the lyrics as originally written by David Pomeranz. Barry Manilow, who subsequently had a hit with this song, asked that some words be changed for his interpretation.
_____________________________________________
The song was written and originally recorded by David Pomeranz on his 1976 album "It's In Everyone Of Us." Says Pomeranz: "We had a bit of a tumultuous time. My first wife and I had some ups and downs, which is what the song kind of speaks about. I kind of pulled from that experience. I also pulled from other times I'd had where I'd be kind of hot in love with somebody and then one day the fear would be gone, and I would never understand. I've come to understand what that's all about since, but there was a time that it was a mystery to me, how I could be in love and then not be. Which is kind of funny."
Pomeranz: "The music came first. There's a line with the title, "That up/down, trying to get the feeling again." I think it was something that came organically, and I sort of... tried to get the feeling again. I didn't understand what the song meant, and I had to sort of work backwards and discover what the lyrics were going to say, but that often happens, where I'll just have a title, and not know really, fully what the song's about until I kind of delve into it.
I wrote it in San Francisco. I remember sitting out on a rooftop writing that. It took a little less than a year, but it was something I just couldn't get right. The beginning of the song has verses in it which are the initial kind of set-up to the song. So the, "Doctor, my woman is coming back home late today," that thing, I was working on that for several months, the body of the song, and I just couldn't get that opening verse right. I wrote several versions, one Barry recorded, one the Carpenters recorded, and one I recorded on Arista. And they were all different verses, which is really funny. It was those maybe 5 lines that I had worked on for 4 to 6 months, I just couldn't get it right. Funny."
Several artists recorded this before Manilow, including Gene Pitney and Lonnie Youngblood. Says Pomeranz: "It was actually written for the Carpenters. I had heard that they were looking for a song. And they never recorded it, or so I thought. Then Barry put his record out, and it was as big of a hit as it was, and then cautiously, they released an album of The Carpenter's called "Interpretations" in 1995, and on it was a version of 'Tryin' To Get The Feeling' that Karen had recorded, which was a complete surprise to everybody. So it was recorded several times, but Barry's was the big, big hit."
My God!!!! I have been a fan of the Carpenters since 1998 and only discovered this version in 2020 !!!!!!!!!!!! What a privilege and emotion. This version makes my eyes fill with tears. What a wonderful singer !!!!!!! That's why KAREN is my favorite of all. How much time I wasted without hearing Karen's voice. Forgive me, Barry Manilow, I'm also a fan of yours, but everything Karen sings becomes a precious thing. Karen Carpente's version will be my favorite from now on. Thanks for sharing.
Too good to be true boy.
So many songs, especially Karens make my heart fill with tears, the first songs I remember my mother singing to me back in the 80s are top of the world and end of the world. I only had 4 or 5 songs of their's until I was 33 when I got a compilation.
You may tear up when you hear this, remembering the tragic way she died.

So True!
Each and every damn time Karen opens her mouth to sing something, she's not just carrying a tune, she's telling a damn story that everybody needs to listen to! Her voice was and still is the greatest ! Then, Now and eternally!
Karen Carpenter is the best female vocalist ever without a doubt!
I don't think that any other female recording artist can ever replace the one and only Karen Carpenter.Karen has what is a golden voice.peace and harmony with a heart and soul.gone too soon and too young.
altogether too young my friend [broken hearted]
That sheet of paper flipping (1:59) makes me feel like I am there listening to Karen during the recording; this "error" makes the song even more perfect to me. I used to love Barry's version, but when I heard Karen's voice... Oh boy, it became a most on my favorite ones from the C's...
I loved your comment... you have a good ear!!
I don't know why they didn't release it on the kind of Hush album which really was one of their weakest albums. I think it would have been a chart topper, and much better than Barry Manilows version.
GEMINI-G - Word was they thought they already had enough ballads on “Horizon.” Manilo did a great job. But I’m partial to Karen. Her voice is effortless. I still am blown away by facts like “Superstar” was Karen’s first take on the song. Richard thought there was no way to improve on that. And he was right.
I also noticed the sheet of paper turned over (1:59). It gave this song a very special touch. I also prefer this version of KAREN's voice.
One of my favorites from 2020 forever.
fakerating 😊 just saw your comment a year later!!! Shame on me, thank you!!!
I was casually listening to this recording by Karen while browsing this comment and that given below. That alone was enough to make my eyes well up. Karen is truly out of this world. And I'm really happy to find all these people sharing these feelings about her.
The best female vocalist ever!
I can’t believe they didn’t include this in the album! What a shame. Such an amazing version.
pure perfection, The Carpenters version turns a good song into absolute magic!
IKR? Karen takes Barry to school on this...
Trivia : David Pomeranz wrote this song and it was given to Richard Carpenter. The Carpenters recorded this song first in the mid 70's but for some reason never made it as a cut to any of their earlier albums. Then Barry Manilow recorded it in the late 70's and became one of his signature songs. Richard picked this up and included this song in The Carpenters Essentials Collection which was released in 1989 or 88 long after Karen died. I think Richard made a huge mistake by dropping this song back then, it could have been a charter. And by the way, this is a one take recording. You can still hear Karen turning a page of lyrics in the middle of the song.
Karen Carpenter is the most beloved female vocalist ever!
The most beautiful voice I have ever heard in my life! Kareen Carpenter's voice is simply beautiful and so smooth and I love her so much and I miss her!
I'm a die hard Barry fan and this is the first time I heard this sung by anyone else, its a blessing that it is Karen Carpenter.
I adore Karen and I think Barrys version is far better. Cool to hear another version though.
@@skijock486 To each his own. This version is a million miles better than Barry's to me.

The lyrics are much better in this version - they're more complex and intelligent. And this may be a work lead, but Karen just nails it. Those tones!
Still don't understand about the "bonnet"?
@@beecnul8r What bonnet?
What?! When did this happen?! I never knew they covered this song!!! ❤ She can sing anything!
No one does it like the great.K.C.
She always nails sad songs...Perfection!
Tryin' To Get The Feeling Again
Carpenters
At any moment he'll be walking through that door
But he won't find me behind it
'Cause the feeling is gone and just won't come back any more
I worked so hard to find it
I've been up, down, tryin' to get the feeling again
All around tryin' to get the feeling again
That one that made me shiver
Make my knees start to quiver every time he walks in
I've look high, low, everywhere I possibly can
But there's just no tryin' to get the feeling again
It seemed to disappear as fast at it came
(*) Read every book, looked, for every meditation and poem
Just to bring home that old sweet sensation
But it ain't no use to me to try to get the feeling again
When did it leave me
How did I come to miss use such a beautiful bonnet
But baby believe me, I've done everything I can do
But somehow it's no returnin'
I've been up, down, tryin' to get the feeling again
Like a bloodhound searching for a long lost friend
Could you help me rediscover
The way to re-be his lover once again
Repeat (*)
I want to get that feeling again
Você poderia me ajudar a redescobrir
Um jeito de voltar a ser a amante dele outra vez?
Repete (*)
Eu quero ter essa sensação de novo
OMG, 1st time heard this song, & by Karen Carpenter, now singing with the Angels,
so now Trying to get the feeling again.. Love this so much...
Outstanding music, magnificent interpretation by the incomparable Karen Carpenter! Applause from Brazil!
Perfect balance of intimate vocal with orchestration!
Even singing on a "work lead" this woman was magnificent.
Great tune and lovely reading by Karen as always! This could have been a smash hit in 1975. What a shame it was lost! They could have used this as a single instead of Solitaire (great song but not exactly the best choice for a single IMO).
I've always loved Manilow's take on the song. That said, I am very impressed with Miss Carpenter's version. Karen always had a wonderful voice, and I'm sorry she's not still around making great music.
Karen had a disease... it was no one's fault. Not even hers.
This is a masterpiece.
I always love this song I love Barry manilow's version but Karen's is the best
You know as a "Boomer" a loving the quality of the songs I grew up with (no comparison to todays so called talent, I feel grateful I had the opportunity to have this especially when back then we didn't have much else to do other than listen to the radio and records. But, my main point is that its amazing how many outtake songs such as this were never released. ABBA also had quite a few. They were incredible songs and had they been released probably would have been chart toppers.
Love the song and especially carpenters version. I love the intimacy her voice adds to the song. No one can quite sing like she can.
Karen brings a special character to every song :-)
KAREN'S PERFECT TOUCH ALWAYS DO WHEN SHE SINGS ANY SONG. THAT'S WHY SHE IS MY DEAR AND FAVORITE.
Absolutely fantastic! Karens voice with Richards musical talent! Cant be beat!
1:59 wen she turns the page u can hear ,,listen , ,,i love it so much ,,i love u karen u angel xxxxx
HOW was this not included on Horizon? Should have replaced "Love Me For What I Am." Would have made the album a more varied and powerful listen.
Why not keep BOTH songs on Horzion! The bookends of the album weren't actually long songs!
"Love Me For What I Am" is heaven! The final phrasing of when she sings: "You're really not in love so let me go, i must be free" sounds like butter!!
Amazing so beautiful and haunting one of my favorite Carpenters songs
anyone here for WSC
Lel 01 yep
Wow this version is something. I like this better than Barry's version
Wish this could have made it to 1975 horizon CD
hmmm... anyone here for wsc?
What's Up Scholars! I remember seeing your comments in the other videos! What local/global round are you going to?
Yep
Undoubtedly the best reading of the song even if its a rehearsal rendition the song takes on an added dimension with Karen's voice and Richards exquisite arrangement
THE GREATEST RENDITION of this song, EVER !!! by the most beautiful greatest female singing voice , ever.
at 1:58 the pages turning can be heard .
Beautiful, serious, powerful!
The example of fantastic and sharp cooperative of Karen's extrordinary voice and large orcestra !!
yeah - the Barry arrangement/production is excellent, but Richards orchestration/production is unbelievable! really "otherworldly"... :)
Just think how much more she could have done! It just tears me to shreds. I love this and think it could have been a single. ❤
Karen was magnificent in this!! A voice like hers will never be around...she could have sung anything, as Petula Clark said about Karen's voice....I remember in 1994 when I heard this song and was mesmerized by it...and still am...
Hear hear!!
Karen was just amazing, no replacement, ever.
wat about trump(he certainly trumps himself into things, so why not?(im kidding))
Agree...
I loved Barry's song...till I heard THIS!
"but her untimely death made use listen to the undertones we might have missed"
Una canzone bellissima, dolcissima, elegante, sensibile
... Un altro capolavoro dei the carpenters
She is the best among the best
From phils.
Karen's most amazing vocal quality : she made it seem easy--like anyone could do it! Ohh yes, just try, any of her songs, especially one like this! A masterful reading!! Wolfsky9
@dereknnashville No your wrong she does turn the page i saw an interview with Richard about the recording of this song and apparently Karen wasnt to sure on the lyrics and wanted to have them in front of her he even says how eerie it is that the mic picked it up :)
Karen Carpenter brings out the magic in this song unlike anybody. Love the video...it totally portrays the sad finality of a love affair. Well done.
A perfect voice. Only Sinatra can sing like Karen! Frank was a baritone and I think Karen is at fhe same tonal quality. Her range spanned several octaves.
Bravo
Hope shes still singing like an angel up there too, we so dearly miss her.
Sorry when i say this... But the Barry Manilow´s version is boring, and really i don´t like . The Karen´s version ( Carpenters ) , is one milion thousand times better .... And i remember when i heard this song for the first time to. I know the feelings that i fell...
Best version
WSC?
Me Boiii
Bao nguyen Nguyen yep
Etrange histoire que celle de cette chanson : mais quelle beauté !! La piste enregistrée par Karen , était sensée n'être qu'un guide pour le travail des musiciens ! Magique !!
thank you for compiling this video
hi ned! hope you had a lyrics of this karen version anytime soon... thanks! really cant get enough of karen... dont know why... such a loss feel sad💔
What a gem! Thanks Ned!
I have never heard this version before and I love it. I thought it was a Manilow original. Thanks for the education
World Scholar's Cup anyone?
Yep
Hii see you theree
Yep see you in beijing
I forgot to add... Karen is Angelic here--as she is in EVERYTHING THING. I challenge every KC fan...what was it her brother Richerd said about her singing? And why was he so angry when she did that Solo album?
Perfection!
❤️ this Carpenters version 👍🙂
There's no arguing who has the better voice...Karen or Barry.
Really beautiful video to an amazing song, thank you for sharing this.
Thank you for this, your'e a Legend
love the video
folks wait!!Ms Carpenter,Mr.Manilow, two very heart felt performers, both very good styles,1st.Karen is,was amazing,Barry was great,we have to understand a male and female perspective,i like both versions, different, but heart felt.
Hi Ned, Lovely Video. What software was it made in?
This song brings memories from 2016 when I was madly in love for the second time in my life
The arrangement reminds me of Phil Spector's WALL OF SOUND
This song was also recorded by The Stanky Brown Group for Arista Records, before Barry recorded it and I believe before the Carpenters recorded it. Clive Davis never released it. If you search UA-cam for the Stanky Brown version you can find it.
This was recorded in 1975-was lost and rediscovered by Richard Carpenter and then released by him in 1994 .19 years after it was recorded and 11 yrs after Karen died .I saw Karen sing and drum in 1972.I think this is her best work .
Wsc anyone
Once you've heard Manilow do his version, as much as I wanna love this, I have to treat them as Different songs. Different melodies, arrangements.
Well Karen thought highly of Manilow and Manilow thought highly of Karen. I personally think Karen is so gifted in her musicality...she could have sung a PHONE BOOK and sold a million copies single-wise!!
WSC BROUGHT ME HERE
What global round are you in?
David Pomeranz u are a genius
A _very_ underrated genius.
awesome
Belíssimo...
Wonderful ❤️❤️❤️
OMG She owns this song the way she makes the music express her pain
I heard this when i was a kid .
Hey, Ned Nickerson, I had always been a fan of your videos, but the first time I watched this it reall blew up my mind; it took my mind and the song to another extension, provided it was also the first time that I had heard the song in its entirety!
I must confess this video has been really influential on my own way to put my tribute videos and performances together, the sooth transitons from one heartbreaking picture to the other: a class job! Kudos, Mister!
@Carpentersfan2003 YEEEEES SOOOOO COOOOOL , THE MUSIC, THE VOICE , SO COOOOOOOOL, I SURE MISS KAREN AND REST IN PEACE
wsc anyone?

How about you all? What was your entry point to the Carpenters?
Thank you!
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Barry is just as good as Karen. You are all forgetting about style. Each had their own way, yet, were very much the same. Be honest, you think K was better only because you like her more than you like Barry! Each was (and is) a legend in their respoective right.
❤️
psssst pakita ka na saken o! Malapit ng mag 2020! 😯😩😧💖🌷✌✌✌@edz @imelda minlay
whenever i hear her voice theres something about it that southes me it could put a baby rip karen carpenter she was a wonderful women i miss her and qhen i hear about het i want to cry she was amazing i love karen carpenter we miss you god bless your soul.
ah yes the famous turning of the page that she does. She recorded this with ANY instruments at all. They all were added later. I like this rendition visual of the song. I have something like this I'm mind that I want to do for Calling Occupents. I want to use Carpenters footage but also other space material as well. I would like to use movie stills suce as ET etc. I know it will have to be for my personal use. For getting the rights will be a nightmare. Love the video keep em coming.
Who else is here only for wsc?
Seo Hyun Park our school didn’t send us for global round... tho we stood as the 7th overall team. What about you? Korean right?
Ps- I watch kdramas n m a huge kfan
I'm hopefully entering a new s/m relationship with a new man.the lyrics and the sound of the guitar in the middle section is a reminder of what is happening in my life. I can't stop playing as I await my new master's phone call.
i love this song.i can relate....
