I agree Aileen, the guitar part is profound and sophisticated, and says as much as the vocal. Beautiful guitar work, wonderful song. Neil's voice in this performance sounds about as good as I've ever heard it as well.. Very clear and nice tone.
I've never cared for Neil Young's voice, yet he's written some of the most poignant songs ever and I can't imagine them having the same impact with someone else singing them. There is definitely a different level of feeling that he brings to the music.
Decades ago at the Live Aid concert all of these rockers came out in their costumes and bs, then Neil walks out on stage by his self in sneakers, blue jeans and a plain white tshirt and his guitar and blew everyone other band away performing ' Needle and The Damage Done '. A bunch of glitter and a chunk of gold. ...ok, that's being too hard on everyone else... still, it was striking.
Thank you for the heartfelt reaction Aileen! Though he has lived in the States most of his life Neil was born and raised in Canada and is genuine Canadian treasure! You must react to his song "Heart of Gold" from the same concert, and make sure you watch the intro too, as it shows a lot of his personality. Another one of his songs to get to one day is called "The Needle And The Damage Done". He has been called "The Godfather of Grunge" and I had the pleasure of seeing him in concert opening for Pearl Jam in 1994, a simply amazing concert!
That does sound like a great concert. I went to a Dave Matthews concert in 2006, maybe 2007, with a "surprise opening guest", damned if it didn't turn out to be Neil Young! Much like your's, it was an awesome show.
@@AdamAmbrose2112 Ya, the "Smell the Horse Tour that was later released as "WELD". I saw that show at the Cincinnati Gardens, I was disappointed at the time because he didn't do any acoustic, but I'm over it now, lol! Thank you for your heartfelt comments Aileen....the more I listen to this one, the more I think it's the greatest solo acoustic performance EVER! Utterly amazing. You can't believe that one person with an acoustic guitar can do that.
@albertsmith93156- I read it different. I think he cares very much about what she thinks of him. He is trying to shake off getting dumped. He is telling himself "its all good, I dont need her, I'm going home to my sanctuary (his ranch- I'm rolling home to you) and I'll be fine". It's one of my favorite lines also. Rallying optimism in the face of grief. The old man made it through similar emotion, and so can I.
@@philipbarton2634 I took it as he was talking to the "old man", not a girl. To me, it explains the separation of generations... young people not trying to impress the people that came before. The beauty of art is that it can be interpreted differently by those that experience it. Great line.
Neil has always been authentic ~ he made a point over the years to refuse companies that wanted him to endorse their products ~ yet he will fully get involved in causes he believes in ~ like supporting FarmAid & the First Nations ~ he has recorded some really powerful songs like "Ohio" which to this day still haunts me or "Southern Man"
He & his wife (at the time) Peggy also did an annual concert in S.F. for decades to benefit the special needs school their son went to (he has Cerebral Palsy). They were called "The Bridge" concerts.

Classic Neil from the early 1970s. He's 77 now with a very long, rich and creative career. I'm 71 and grew up with his music. As a fellow Canadian we're very proud of him. Listen to "Helpless" Aileen. Love your reaction videos, very interesting inter-generational appreciation.

Pure Neil Young greatness! I'm 66 years old and have been a fan of Neil Young since his days as a member of "Buffalo Springfield" along with Stephen Stills, both future members of Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young. Look up the story behind this song. It's such a human experience.
wow, totally true...after seeing this i put two and two together...this is exactly like Kurt during their unplugged all those years later...so awesome!!! gives me a new appreciation for Neil
Thank you for this reaction!!! My brother used to listen to this song all the time this one and Heart of gold by Neil We played both songs at my brother's funeral he passed from a car accident in 2016 Again thank you😢
Neil is one of the very best (imho), he was a very successful folk singer who scored hit after hit with his wordsmith abilities and acoustic guitar and harmonica skills. And then he broke the biggest rule in folk music, "thou shall not use electrical amplified guitars", and he introduced electric guitar and rock into his musical catalog. This could've killed his career, if he wasn't Neil Young.. because, the man is a musical genius and gave us countless of amazing songs. A few to keep in mind : "Heart of gold", "Needle and the damage done", "Rocking in the free world", "Harvest moon", "Southern man" (which prompted a reply from Lynyrd Skynyrd with the song "Sweet home Alabama"), "Ohio", "Like a hurricane", and "Powderfinger" are all songs you should check out at some time, you'll love them and hear all "shades of Neil" in that selection.
My favorite Neil Young song is "Harvest Moon." It's the story of long-time lovers growing old together. It's pretty much the story of my wife and I, so it means a lot to us. I recommend it.
" Ohio " is a truly great song that Niel wrote and preformed with CS&N. You might want google " Kent State Shootings-1970" before , just for some background
50 PLUS YEARS listening to Neil... he like Bob Dylan very gifted musicians, they're legends! Like the Beatles their music will be relevant for decades to come. So much music of his to explore! You are in for an experience of great rock n roll music, both acoustic and electric! You know, talking about electric, just for grins, the thing is there's so many, but nevertheless, if you like to get an idea of his electric side, search on UA-cam for Cinnamon Girl. There's several, both acoustic and electric. Look for the electric version titled "Neil You & Crazy Horse - Cinnamon Girl (live 1991in real HD) Fun rock n roll video to watch! As a suggestion, Rolling Stone had a special edition of Neil couple of years ago. His life, and their take of his top 100 songs. They missed about 17, that I contacted them about them in no uncertain terms.... lol! Should have been at least his top 125! Since you asked, hopefully you can find the edition from Rolling Stone, there you'll find a treasure trove of of songs. However like I said there's at least 17 I came up with that should have made the list. Nice reaction Aileen. I see you covered Old Man just couple of days ago and first time seeing your channel... I subscribed because of your reaction to NY! Good job girlfriend! Peace, Love & Groovy Tunes!
Try the first side of his After the Gold Rush album, for the same effect. Also, the single "Ohio," released in reaction to the May 4, 1970 killings of four Kent State University students who were protesting the Vietnam war.
My factory name is "Old Man", most of the workers are half my age. I'm father, brother, or uncle to most of them. It's OK that's what life is, try to steer them in the right direction, and allow them to make their mistakes. Elders are a society's treasure.
Neil is very young here (maybe 24?), but he had a old soul already. The power of art to move emotions is genuine, and he's had that magic from an early age. Now that I'm 60 and been listiening to him most of my life, along with many other artists, I cannot imagine a life without this kind of music in it.
Rock-folk album "Harvest" brought this song to the world and Neil got accompanied by some music royalty: Harvest is the fourth studio album by Canadian-American musician Neil Young, released on February 1, 1972, by Reprise Records, catalogue number MS 2032. It featured the London Symphony Orchestra on two tracks and vocals by guests David Crosby, Graham Nash, Linda Ronstadt, Stephen Stills, and James Taylor
I love all of your genuinely emotional reactions. Helps me feel music again that I’ve gotten used to, and listened to so many times, the emotion has faded. You help renew the emotional reaction and attachment to this music (especially Pink Floyd!). Oh and you are absolutely gorgeous.
I make a point to return to Neil Young every so often. When I need to put my life back into perspective, there are very few who can genuinely accomplish that for me. A true LEGEND!
There are many different "Neil Young's" as his career has had many facets and dipped his toes in many genres and worn many hats literally and figuratively, but the two main "Neil's" are the folky Neil (as seen here) and the hard-rocking guitar-distorted Neil with his band Crazy Horse which earned him the title of the "Godfather of Grunge". All facets of his career are worth checking out.
I’m going to suggest “Birds” by Neil Young. It’s not one of his biggest hits but I think it will give you goosebumps from head to toe. Also now that you discovered Neil you should check out his all star band CSNY ( Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young). Their song “ Our House” will warm your heart.
"the intensity" Us music folks call that dynamics! I really enjoy your reactions. You really give intelligent commentary. And you can tell when you genuinely dig it. ❤
he has had such an amazing career as both a part of Crosby, Stills Nash (CSNY) but especially solo, also Buffalo Springfield together with Stephen Stills pre CSNY and Woodstock!
If one wants to explore Neil Young, I would start with his early 70's Albums Everyone Knows This Is Nowhere, the Legendary Album After The Goldrush and Harvest.
Genuine and from the heart. You referred to him as young, I'm 68 and had an 8 track tape of the album Harvest when I was in high school. They were 3/10$ and never worked very well. Great song, great album.
Hi , thank you for your great reaction. I've loved this song for over 40 years and have heard it in concert at least a dozen times. I still get the emotional reaction you are getting now. Two great videos to check him out live " Cinnamon Girl" NY and Crazyhorse 1991 or "Like a Hurricane " 1977 I can't speak for all NY fans but, if you ask me my favorite NY song ... Short answer What day and how am I feeling on that day? Yup I answered my own question with a question ...lol I've said this to people when discussing Neil's music. If you're in a mood and want out of it...he's got a song. If you are in a mood and want to stay there ...he's got a song . if you are sick of that version of his song... he has probably recorded it with three or more groups and varied the sound, tempo and or intensity. If you want rock...he's got that covered with crazy horse, Crosby ,Stills , Nash and Young, Buffalo Springfield ,The Stray Gators or Pear Jam, Folk ...solo, some CSNY and Buffalo Springfield. Rockabilly ..the Shocking Pinks . Blues with the Blue Notes , Country with International Harvesters. I hope you go down the NY rabbit hole...lol
I first heard this song as a young man. Now I listen as an old man and the meaning is the same, only more emotional now that all these years have passed. The material possessions never really last. The love lasts even though loved ones will leave you forever. Love them while they are still with you. Every day is a gift. Whatever you do with that gift is up to you. It will never be given again. React to Pink Floyd "Time" and actually pay attention to the lyrics. Of course, remember to NEVER pause a Gilmour solo!!!
I bet if Neil ever sees your reaction to this "His" song he'd have a big smile on his face. Your reaction would tell him he's done an amazing job. When a person hears, feels, and can see the song as it's sung that must be a great compliment to the song writer. I know there are a lot of sports heroes and great actors that many people aspire to be like, But I think if you're a truly gifted song writer and singer that when people hear your music and it makes them remember or it reminds them of certain things in their lives wether happy times with old friends or sad times about a lost love or anything in between that has to be a rewarding feeling. Music is a truly powerful thing and Neil Young is one of the best.
Neil Young is as important to the history of music and rock as Pink Floyd and has been rocking since he appeared at Woodstock! That's how huge and influential he is! Remember that late 60's band Crosby, Nash Stills & Young? THAT'S HIM!
I really love this video. I'm an older guy, Dad is dead (I know the song has a slightly different meaning). So it gets me every time. And listening to it for about 50 years helps too. Everything you say makes sense. Neil is a huge rabbit hole.

Neil Young is one of Canada's gems. Look at his song book gorgeous, there's lots of treasures. Neil Young is one of the best singer songwriters of his and any generation! 👍👍🔥🔥🔥🔥❤️❤️❤️❤️💋💋💋💋🦊🦊🦊🦊🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹
Pure Neil Young greatness! I'm 66 years old and have been a fan of Neil Young since his days as a member of "Buffalo Springfield" along with Stephen Stills, both future members of Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young. Look up the story behind this song. It's such a human experience.
Really like your show! Two more from Neil...Sugar Mountain and Needle and the Damage Done. Keep up the good work!
Niel is considered the "Godfather of Grunge" which is the most accurate description in the evolution of music,.. in my opinion 😅🌀
That's cool, I never thought about it, but it does establish many of the core elements of that later genre. Thanks for that data!
wow, totally true...after seeing this i put two and two together...this is exactly like Kurt during their unplugged all those years later...so awesome!!! gives me a new appreciation for Neil
Neil Young is not grunge. Dumbest shit I’ve ever heard. Folk music is the best description
Wow. Thanks for that. I’ll never hear him again without that thought popping into my head.
Maybe, but he's so much more than that! Classic rocker, amazing musician, protest artist and antagonist, folk singer and on anad on !!!
Thank you for this reaction!!!
My brother used to listen to this song all the time this one and Heart of gold by Neil
We played both songs at my brother's funeral he passed from a car accident in 2016
Again thank you😢
Neil is one of the very best (imho), he was a very successful folk singer who scored hit after hit with his wordsmith abilities and acoustic guitar and harmonica skills.
Aileen
Neil Young has and his backup band jammed this song.
Thanx! Beautiful and touching reaction to a beautiful touching song!
I just enjoy seeing your reactions to music I grew up with. There are many rabbit holes you can go down with Neil Young.
My favorite Neil Young song is "Harvest Moon." It's the story of long-time lovers growing old together. It's pretty much the story of my wife and I, so it means a lot to us. I recommend it.
This legend is in his late 70’s now and has a massive catalogue of music, I would suggest Cortez the Killer and Cowgirl in the Sand.
I'm staring at my father as I play this song, he is at his time soon. I'm playing this song, praying, hoping I have him for just another moon.
The beautiful simplicity of an acoustic guitar, a passionate voice, and a story from the depths of one's soul...
"doesn't mean that much to me, to mean that much to you". Best lyric ever.
Neil Young Is Such Genuine Person/Artist
" Ohio " is a truly great song that Niel wrote and preformed with CS&N.
You might want google " Kent State Shootings-1970" before , just for some background
Awesome reaction, thank you!!!
For a singer-songwriter accompanying themselves on an acoustic guiter--IT DOESN'T get any better than that!!
You should check out Like a Hurricane by Neil Young! Very powerful love song!
"Doesn't mean that much to me to mean that much to you" . . . One of the best lines ever written.
Forgot to add I’d highly recommend Revolution Blues, very underrated but also very brilliant!
He has a beautiful voice as well as playing the guitar so well.
Neil's band is called,'crazy horse's, try Cinnamon Girl . He is the father of grunge . Thank you ❤😊
Neil is very young here (maybe 24?), but he had a old soul already. The power of art to move emotions is genuine, and he's had that magic from an early age. Now that I'm 60 and been listiening to him most of my life, along with many other artists, I cannot imagine a life without this kind of music in it.
Very true. Never really thought about that. Thank God for the Neil Youngs and Bob Dylans. You kinda look like Eric Clapton yourself lol 👍
7:20 The highs and lows are thus: the reaction to the words is the heavy part...the guitar keeps soaring the emotions upwards.
Good fishin' music right here. Blue gills love it.
Do more Neil. Love it. You really got the song.😍🇨🇦👍
he has had such an amazing career as both a part of Crosby, Stills Nash (CSNY) but especially solo, also Buffalo Springfield together with Stephen Stills pre CSNY and Woodstock!
Love this song but this particular version really hits different, so good!
Neil Young always has a soulful deep song!! Awesome!!
This is from a BBC TV special in England. You should check out the whole show. Brilliant!
This was ‘72. So young, so gifted!
Great Reaction! He has so many good songs. "Ohio, Heart of Gold, Needle and the damage Done". You are so spot on young lady✌️
Classic! Jump into the rabbit hole!! Try CSN&Y great harmonies, guitar etc!!❤️
Wonderful reaction! Another absolute gem from Neil Young: "POCAHONTAS"... a totally mesmerizing, haunting song with incredible lyrical beauty.
Neil Young - My my, hey hey (Out of the blue)
You have to listen to a track from this show where he plays the harmonica like Heart of Gold
Great reaction Aileen, may I also recommend "The Needle & the Damage Done" from the same performance.
Hi , thank you for your great reaction. I've loved this song for over 40 years and have heard it in concert at least a dozen times. I still get the emotional reaction you are getting now.
Two great videos to check him out live " Cinnamon Girl" NY and Crazyhorse 1991 or "Like a Hurricane " 1977
I can't speak for all NY fans but, if you ask me my favorite NY song ... Short answer What day and how am I feeling on that day? Yup I answered my own question with a question ...lol
I've said this to people when discussing Neil's music.
I have done time !
Great reaction. Your description about life is perfect.
Yes! More Neil please. Maybe.... "Cortez the Killer"
He brought so much to Crosby Stills and Nash when he joined and the band became Crosby Stills Nash and Young
LOL Aileen. Wait until you are 57. 24 still seems like yesterday. Love your reactions. They are so full of passion!
Beautiful song Beautiful reacton from a Beautiful young lady
This entire concert is gorgeous
GOD BLESS YOU GIRL!
Thank you for paying homage to an artist that inspired so many in reflection of the past!
peace
THAT'S HIM!
He and Stills were the driving force of Buffalo Springfield
Aileen you nailed this reaction.
I really love this video. I'm an older guy, Dad is dead (I know the song has a slightly different meaning). So it gets me every time. And listening to it for about 50 years helps too. Everything you say makes sense. Neil is a huge rabbit hole.
