"Please save us, Dragonborn!"
Dragonborn: Be quiet, I'm trying to study rocks
This dragons... this gigants. they all on my way to discover the mysteries skyrim's geology, damn with everyone who tries to be in my crusade!
I'm a geologist and I spend HOURS trying to make it work!
It requires quite a bit of extrapolation 👀
The best I can figure is two things:
1, Tamriel (and the world as a whole) is the corpse of a god.
2, Magic has taken a MASSIVE role in the shaping of the geography of the planet.
So, keep those in mind. A lot of the laws we know on earth aren't even supposed to apply.
@@huntclanhunt9697 Exactly, thx 👍
@@huntclanhunt9697 I'm picturing a much wetter interior than earth, mobilizing the various ore minerals. Thats the part that always gets me. We won't even go into the red Mt, my background is in mafic volcanics...
@@huntclanhunt9697 Outer Space (Oblivion) is full of air and nothing else until you stumble into some small planet (a realm of Oblivion) through either Teleportation or the Skyrim Space Program.
As a fellow geologist I found this delightful. The “it’s quartz” had me 💀 2:05
The disaffected "I see. I won't bring you more then." had me 💀
Exept that quartz veins sometimes carry gold.
I work in exploration geology and quartz veins are the main area of interest for our sampling. We collect hundreds of samples of it per season.
I always assumed the hints of volcanic activity in Eastmarch could be connected to Vvardenfell and Red Mountain, considering they aren't too far apart
Yeah, they could be, but the physical properties of their volcanic outputs are different (Red Mountain seems to be basaltic/intermediate magmas - where you normally see running lavas) and Eastmarch Hotspot being felsic (thicker, more explosive and lighter lavas). So I looked at the real world, where the Yellowstone volcano and the Cascadian volcanoes are relatively close by, but it is generally assumed that the Yellowstone volcano is a hotspot while the West Coast volcanoes are subduction-related. That being said, some studies suggest that the 2 volcano systems are somehow linked. Plus a magma chamber below a volcano can also change its magma as it rises through the crust, another case for them being related. However, this depends on which system is older.
Anyhow, natural science is also at war with itself 🤪
🤓
@@corcanish Well, Newberry would provide for an excellent approximation in the real world! It forms a whole range of magma types, with a basaltic shield that has produced VEI 6 rhyolitic eruptions. The result is a landscape with spreading lava flows and mafic cinder cones, and a caldera with rhyolite and even obsidian flows, and some hot springs. Pretty much exactly what you're looking for! Now granted, its a pretty unusual beast of a volcano, likely with different magma chambers with different compositions to pull that off, but it _is_ possible.
@@StuffandThings_ Thanks for pointing that out!! Will definitely find some literature on it 🌋😊
Lorewise they're very far apart. Skyrim is 105,000 sq mi. And there's about a similar distance between Eastmarch and the Red Mountain.
That being said, the Red Mountain is MASSIVE. It was the tallest mountain in Tamriel before it erupted. Vvardenfell is 31,000 sq mi, and the Red Mountain is about a 3rd of Vvardenfell. Imagine a volcano that's a 3rd the size of the Czech Republic. Or roughly the size of Sicily.
Realistically it probably should have destroyed all large life on the planet.
you know why I love this dude? he doesn't have to match the lighting. he doesn't have to simulate the wind. all those little details, he doesn't have to do, and it would still be good AND YET HE DOES
Facts my man goes above and beyond to create these GLORIOUS MASTERPIECES
It's impressive filmmaking, ngl, especially for what's essentially... a shit post.
@@jessehenderson2967 Shitposts these days seem to have a remarkable amount of effort. Just recently I found a video where someone remade the entire Pipe Dream set and made an appropriate arrangement just for a joke, and another video where someone wrote an entire 2+ hour Minecraft parody of Hamilton. The high effort shitposts are quickly becoming my favorite category of videos, the comedy combined with the cinematography just to bring a funny idea to life is amazing!
He's our favorite Redguard who's modded to the max
Bold ofxyou to assume he's redguard just because he's black lol@@CoffeeSuccubus
I'm always intrigued by the way Cor is so clearly unimpressed by the people closest to him, yet he seems to love them with a certain affection despite his fatigue, while being so obviously enamored with the people (and things) most distant from him despite his love for those distant things being more like fascination than real affection.
The grass is always greener, eh Cor?
Yes, hopefully he will learn to appreciate his friends in the moment at some point 😊
It's a tragedy waiting to happen! But it seems like the character is soon to develop
@@corcanish He is after all OBSESSED with Skyrim's geology. Obsession always comes with its downsides wouldn't you agree?
Kinda the perfect adventurer really: shamelessly hedonistic, filled with passion that drives him to just DO stuff, completely self reliant but not without empathy. It's clear he would rather be selfish but he cares enough to set it aside in that "I'd regret not doing this later" kinda way.
Completely lost it when you Skyrimed down that mountain. Your videos are always so delightful and I appreciate your humor and the care you take in creating them.
I literally can't think of a better way to explain the way he went down that mountain.
hahah love how you described it - maybe we can refer to climbing up the mountains on horseback as 'Skyrimed up' too 😅🤣
It would be amazing to see CorCarnish voicing a character on Starfield. I hope Bethesda yoinks this guy one day he's too good.
TESVI is more likely. It'd be interesting to see another person be added to the game because they love the franchise.
@@Practitioner_of_Diogenes I agree it's just that Starfield is hype asf right now
@@J.T.G. It will release in 1 or 2 months according to Steam. Probably the content is already finished and they're just polishing and bug testing now. I hope. 😀
@@KougaJ7 An amazing morning to be reminded of that, thankyou.
@@KougaJ7 Todd said in an interview that it has been content complete for a long time now and they've spent pretty much the whole delay just polishing, refining and bug fixing
For as amusing and charming your videos are, they also often give me a sense of faint melancholy and even wanderlust. Either way, I thoroughly enjoyed this one! Thank you!
Glad that they do! An ounce of sentimentality is always good 😊
That is exactly how I feel when I watch them, but I never knew how to describe it. Thanks for finding the right words.
@@irregularname3854 It makes me want to go back to my geological mapping days...
@derderun These were the words teasing me just out of sight. Thank you for catching them and presenting them so well!
Mans really did a whole Skyrim project for his Geology final and I am here for it 🙏🏻
I didn't understand half of what you were talking about funny rock man, but boy was it was entertaining!
Instant classic, Cor. I can say with certainty that you’ve created a new genre of entertainment, at least for me.
Thanks a lot, Not Steve!
Well, it' s the first time ever i voluntarily watched something geology related, and that should say a lot, lol. Soon you' ll be an expert at pretty much everything, so i am expecting a Cor College to be announced sometime in the future, where every course imaginable will be taught by you. This is such a fun channel!
Hah, glad to hear! Yes, a lot of people find it dreadfully boring 😄 Cor College sounds like a brill idea! 👨🏽🎓
@@corcanish Cor College sounds great. I would definitely attend this educational institution. Very nice work, Cor. I loved it even more the second time around. 🌱
Geology has never seemed so alluring 🤤
In the words of Tolfdir The absent minded: "This is simply fascinating!"
Hah, thanks! Tolfdir is 100% my mentor!
Whenever you notice inconsistencies in Skyrim's geography, a wizard did it!
Your shots of Skyrim are insane... Finding the right location for each shot must be a lot of work even before the actual shooting!
I was NOT expecting this to be a short film about a geologist falling further and further into isolation in service of his work but it’s very very good
I can't imagine the time and effort it takes to make these videos lol. Amazing job as always :)
On the search for knowledge, it seems our favorite archmage will have to continue alone...
Will Bob discover the joy of science while working at the stables ? Or will this new found peace stir him further away from his friendship ?
Will Serana keep pouting at her mom place or will she finally get her vampiric butt out there and help ?
Will Cor find a true friend who share his interest for the secret hidden within the rock and the profound meaning of Science ?
When will Cor become so good at inserting himself in the game he will literaly become a character in my playthrough ? (seriously modders where is my Cor Canish follower mod)
Find out (maybe?) next time on the Adventures of Archmage Canish.
Those are indeed the broader questions! Stay tuned 😊😊
I love this so much. Great work! It's fun watching Dragonborn Cor ignore the main questline like so many of us do. 😆
I knoooow, I'm not even sure if Cor has trapped that dragon in Dragonsreach yet 😅 Thanks for your support on this video as well!
This is unironically some of my favoruite content on youtube, love you cor
these get better every upload!
Thanks a lot, GnosticInformant, really appreciate the generosity!
I have to say your channel is so underrated. The writing of your videos mixed with amazing editing; your content is on another level, and I will never get bored with it. Keep it up!👏🏾👏🏾
Your videos are relaxing and enthralling at the same time.
Good to see he's wearing a helmet. Safety first!
*He immediately takes the quick way down the mountain*
yep, safety first.
😂
Very original idea. Feels like one of your longest videos yet. Cor definitely would fair better in Cyrodiil for kinship.
Bro the production on this is INSANE!!! You integrated yourself perfectly with the lighting and colour grading holy shiy
Thanks, was a pleasure making it!
My favorite mineral is Tamriel is Kirkbrite, they say if you crush it into fine powder and snort it you achieve CHIM and can alter the geology at will.
wearing those shoes for a geologic survey is just begging for a twisted ankle
The production quality on this video was some of the best I've ever seen in my life.
The way they made in-game shots work perfectly with his green screen, going as far as making first person shots showing his hypotetical pov.
The dialogue with the characters, too.
And the fact that they used the same font thats used in the game's ui.
The acting is great, the direction and scenes are great.
This amount of quality literally overwhelmed me.
Thanks a lot! More coming up
There are always these extreme delicate touches you have in your video that is easy to identify early on. The way the MC moves down mountains being show in semi RL is just a perfect example of what I mean.
Thanks for noticing! I do try to add in small recognisable elements 😊
i wish I had a t-shirt with like your face in a scene from this series on it lol
i don't care if nobody got it. it would just make me happy
Haha, noted! I will try and do that 😆
@@corcanish that little smile you do is my favourite
i do enjoy the adventures of this mild mannered red guard
i saw a screenshot of this video on tumblr and came to look for it IMMEDIATELY, because i honestly think WAY too much about the geology of video games (looking at you, minecraft) and i feel so relieved to find someone else who is similarly obsessed. thank god! i'm not the only one spending hours thinking about this!
also, the editing in this video is incredibly impressive. nice job!!
That running down the cliff part gave me anxiety lol.
But you never do that in-game? 😂
@@corcanish Of course I do, and I usually end up dying a lot lol. Though there is that one modded spell that lets you shoot down a 'landing spot' to safely fall from any height, assuming you don't miss lmao.

It's a nice feature! Will definitely do for the next release again
I was just waiting for him to say,
"The spice must flow."
i am the guard picking up every piece of quartz i see when im out. this is your best bit of editing yet btw
I don't even know where to begin with this one. The cinematography is superb; all the dynamic charts of geological elements, all the tranquil shots of landscape with its little critters doing their little things like being electrocuted by lightning spells or floating dead in a pool, all the deep geological knowledge I'm being waterboarded with, all the shots of everyday life in Skyrim - it all makes that world seem more real, like a living, breathing thing that is out there to explore. Really exqusite job!
I guess you have a background in geology, then! I'm surprised you managed to make sense of some of Skyrim's landscape features, since I doubt Bethesda had a large budget allocated to make their world geologically compliant. And they also had the excuse of "magic took part in the history of Tamriel, it doesn't have to match real world processes".
A couple of other standout points for me:
"And of course the underground itself" at 0:38 made me internally shudder with the thought of Blackreach
The jumps down the side of the mountain (1:00) are such an universal thing among players, so glad it got the Cor treatment
1:55 interesting that Cor treats Bob as his assistant, but Bob actually wears Master robes
4:56 I guess every region is dependent on its subterranean resources. Iron doesn't grow on trees, you know. Perhaps alteration mages should work on that.
7:15 I mean, studying dwemer would certainly be an interesting task for the anthropology series
Thanks a lot, appreciate reading the moments that stand out 😊
I especially love how this reads like a book you might find on a body in Skyrim.
Cor is on the skooma Again
Seeing the hand lens took me right back to my geology class I took in college.
From imersive skits to immersive lore, I'm here for the evolution.
Can’t understand half the words in this, but from what I can gather it’s either someone’s creative skit, or a love letter to Skyrim’s rocks.
my bud, this video is a masterpiece, not a lot of similar stuff are made about skyrim, and the quality is outstanding, i love the dialogue and writing and visuals, and even the audio details you're cared about, this was amazing to watch
Coming from someone who's familiar with several mountain mods that changes everything from color to form - Everything changes when you know there's a reason behind Skyrim's mountains being the color and the formation that they take. This is lore-friendliness to another level.
This lovingly reminded me of my time at geologic field camp at the end of undergrad, scrambling around the Rocky Mountains with my notebook, clipboard, and brunton and mapping bedrock while sketching formations. I got such a wave of fond nostalgia and am thoroughly impressed with the amount of detail you put into this.
Also the "that's quartz" line made me laugh, because I remember when I was with my little cousins in a creek in the Appalachians and they kept bringing me rocks to identify for them.
It was sandstone. Every time.
I honestly thought this was going to be an essay like video, where you talk in a small room about rocks and show some real life examples. This is even better.
Skyrim's the type of game that would include the events which caused all of these features in some random unread book that mentions a flood that happened 10000 years ago
Arrived expecting an upbeat piece to camera about the rock formations of Skyrim, instead got a heart-searing meditation on time and friendship with next-level editing. Incredible.
I hope your channel will get more attention very very soon. You deserve this so much man!
"It's texture tells a different story" oh i agree, most of the textures look like they are in 240 or something.
"What if its older than the people who made it?"
"That's not possible"
This is Tamriel, where time is a dragon that occasionally has an existential crisis. It is very much possible.
This was AWESOME
Ngl I was half expecting that initial jaunt down the mountainside to end in a ragdoll from landing at slightly the wrong angle
Nice Cor is using that ai voice mod now has to be since they're calling him by name and have custom lines
Yup, link for xVASynth in description
It's safe to say that after watching your obsessions videos, my next playthrough of Skyrim will take me MUCH longer than previous ones as I stop to examine all of the small details that coalesce to create this beautiful world we are all still lost in, over a decade later.
I was not prepared for the production value. The amount of effort that went into this is seriously impressive
Cor is badass enough he could be a legit geologist. He even holds the lens right! My questions are:
How many beers does it take to make a 12 passenger van break an axle?
Which mineral tastes the best, and why?
How is he with a whip? It's an important skill.
Dying 😂 I can only answer the 2nd: I've only every licked a halite sample and then I ate some limestone. The former was as suspected salty and the latter was very uneventful.
I need the answers though!
@@corcanish Honestly very few have a flavor, and halite is probably the most pleasant, sylvite is much more bitter. We also chew on sedimentary rocks to tell silt from clay, it has a specific texture against your teeth that you can't feel otherwise.
As too the beer, I've never gotten a good representative sample as we never have just beer back there, it's also packed with rocks, so it skews the study a bit.
And, being honest, I'm not great with a whip BUT I have swung from a branch by my belt to get down from a cliff. I won't admit what I was screaming.
This video...... Rocks 😎😎😎😎
In bobs defense, the thing was made from older materials
yay :) here we go
Wtf did I just watch? This is impressive, educative, funny and moving all at the same time! 😮
I've made a ton of scientific maps trying to explain not just Skyrim's geology, but the climates and biomes of all of Tamriel, even going as far as to sketch a tectonic map and wind/water currents.
Surprisingly, Tamriel (especially Skyrim) is very scientifically accurate. Yes, even Hammerfell having a far north Desert. Beyond that, the things that don't make sense, such as Valenwood being on the same longitude as Elsweyr without a moisture deposit, are explained through the Lore. Valenwood is naturally like Elsweyr, and magically maintained by the Wilderking.
I miss doing ecological breakdowns of TES, it was my favorite hobby and I'd love to go back, but the community has made it clear I'm not welcome.
by the eight, the attention to detail in these is what makes them so good. You could easily just put yourself on the mountain, but you made sure that the wind was blowing on you too. Having warm light with strong shadows in the sun vs cool smooth lighting in overcast...
Hopefully it makes your brain buy the illusion along the way 😊

Wow! This video feels like a movie. If you were to make a full blown Skyrim movie using only shots like this of yourself and base, unmodded Skyrim ... I'm surprised to say I think it would actually work, lol. Your cinematography and storytelling is impeccable!
It's not often you find a unique skyrim channel doing something no one else is doing. I got so engrossed my coffee went cold! Amazing stuff. You do owe me a coffee now though.

Funnily enough, quartz is generally a very useful mineral for industry since it sometimes carries gold.
I work in exploration geology and we always sample any sizable vein of it.
Just because quartz is common in rocks doesn't mean that it isn't useful to us in veins.
Ngl, I honestly never spent more time pondering the HOW of Skyrim more than I have during this video. Those hotsprings are some of my favorite parts in the game, but I never once realized it was because it was a caldera. It makes me appreciate the game that much more, you know? The devs put a LOT of thought into this game.
Poor Cor.
Perhaps Paarthurnax could keep you company, or maybe he'd just lecture about Kynareth, the sky above, and Voice within. While you sneak a sample of unmelting snow or obsidian, while you're up there, as well.
Obsidian... atop the Throat of the World? That too, would suggest volcanic activity!
Yes, I was meant to discuss a few things with Party Snax, including Minecraft! Will hopefully come up 😊

Late to the party but man do I love these! I love how you string together all of it. Its fascinating learning about a fictional world in a game that people love playing in. Your videos really feel as if they add sooo much more depth into the land of Skyrim and the world of Nurn. On the other hand giving personality to the characters and yourself as if your there certainly adds to it. Great Job Cor!!!
