Q&A: David Petraeus on Israel's response to the Hamas attack
Вставка
- Опубліковано 14 жов 2023
- Retired Gen. David Petraeus, who commanded America's wars in both Iraq and Afghanistan, knows from experience what Israel is facing in its fight against the terrorist group Hamas. He talks with CBS News national security correspondent David Martin about the intelligence failure in missing preparations for the attack; how Israel will retaliate; and the suffering that the people of Gaza will endure as a result of Hamas' actions.

"After 9/11, some of the actions that we took we look at differently now."
That's putting it so lightly that the statement barely even exists.
Terrorists breached the border with no resistance coming from IDF at all. That is quite a shocking outcome.
Kind of suspicious. Israel is always on guard and the whole country is like a fortress yet no protection that one day? I don’t believe it.
David Martin, are you forgetting that Senator Robert Byrd stood up in the well of the Senate and told everyone how bad a mistake invading Iraq would be? We were not all over-reacting with rage. Some people understood that Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11 and were begging the rest of the nation not to do it.
Quoting a klansman, bold strategy.
Long live the Military Industrial Complex :- /
For it to survive ever new wars must be invented under the most bizarre excuses.
It might be better to use someone other than a man who filibustered the civil rights bill as an example.
Iraq had there hand in it
@@ChuckTownRC51 Being a klansman has nothing to do with it. Being correct- or not- 'does'. In the case of iraq2, Byrd was correct. The 2nd Bush administration invented a number of lies to justify invading Iraq.
Its funny how so many people look to him as an expert while his strategy in Iraq and Afghanistan led to so much bloodshed, US leaving, and then those countries completely falling apart
Seems like his strategies were more or less working - or at least improving the situation - but then management changed in Washington in 2008 and things went downhill.
the countries falling was due to religion, success by default was impossible. Because you can bring a horse to the river but you can't make it drink.
@@arkwill14 I have heard that argument, I guess it depends on what his thoughts were after the troop surge reduced violence. Was it actually realistic to replace US troops with Iraqi or Afghan police? In the case of Iraq, maybe, but its hard to tell because ISIS caused the country to solidify. Afghanistan, absolutely not. Defeating the Taliban in Afghanistan always needed negotiations because they were based in Pakistan and their nation had an obsession with dislodging the US from Afghanistan. Its very important to remember the troop surge dramatically increased occupation casualties, so it came at a steep cost
Thank you. You still have people dying from 911 illness.
@@Kafirman666 Thanks to America, who do you think funded these religious extremists and created Al-Qaeda in Afghanistan? Afghanistan was secular until the U.S radicalized it through it's funding of religious extremism.

@@OmmerSyssel Well, by Humanitarian agencies for years Israel has been listed as an "Apartheid" Country.
Fun fact, in 1946 Israel bombed the then dignitary four start hotel "King David" in Palestine' 1948 they became a "State"and Palestinian would not be recognized by the UN.
The Israeli state was made of course because nobody in Europe wanted Jews after WW2.
The terrorism continued to be fair on both sides, however the six day war was point in fact caused by Israeli aggression, they would bomb the USU Liberty that same year.

Do the Palestinians living in Gaza have real religious choice? Do they have freedom of speech? Are women treated equally? Are women educated equally? Do minorities have equal legal protection? Are elections run with honesty and integrity? Is there freedom of the press? The people of Gaza deserve better “representation” and leadership than what they’re getting from Hamas, regardless of Israeli policy.
Yeah, that’s true, and so do the Israelis.
You are missing the point. There are two sides that ... as groups ... rely on ancient religious texts and historical traditions that contradict. It is not a question of right or wrong. That is like asking if white skin or black skin is better. The two sides are more or less internally united and the aspirations of the two sides are in conflict. The army of Chiang Kai-shek invaded Taiwan and the people of Taiwan eventually assimilated with them. This is possible .... but not if you adhere to conflicting religious texts. This war footing cannot be resolved short of genocide, forcible expulsion .... or the Israelis leaving. One side talks about Pogroms, the other about the Nakba.
Mind your business
Palestinians gave their voice to HAMAS. Listen, .... to Israel's Response...
@@davidjones6389 one problem with that is that it is false. The PLO is the organization which is supposed to be in charge and working on the two state solution. Exactly 🤯
All the fabricated lies, which killed millions! Of people. Literally all sane people know this. And in front of our eyes, same is happening again. Something is deeply deeply wrong in our western world.
US invasion of Iraq was declared illegal by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan on Sept 15, 2004.
He also once suggested we support Al Qaeda in Syria in order to defeat Assad.
He supported the illegal CIA regime change, proxy war in the Syrian Civil War. (CIA Operation Timber Sycamore 2012-2017) Credited with introducing Isis into Syria, drawing Russia in at Syria’s request, and responsible for hundreds of thousands of deaths.
If you commit terrorism, do be prepared to be treated accordingly. No apologizes.

I met Gen Petraeus on a deployment in Afghanistan. He is a smart tough man who has served this country well. He made a regrettable mistake with his extramarital relationship. These generals spend 2 years on deployments, and are separated from their spouses and families for great stretches of time over decades. Not excusing his action, however, I can see how it happens. I am not perfect but I try to be better. I give grace to folks who stumble, as I have done.
Don't make excuses for his extra marital affairs. That's no excuse I was deployed too.

I've always enjoyed listening to Gen Petraeus explain what must be very complicated military processes.
I'm especially impressed by your attitude towards the Generals mistake. Though men like Gen Petraeus are often stronger than most, they're still human beings.
OK I agree that an affair is one thing (and frankly the US is way too conservative about other people's personal lives) but its the whole sending classified documents to his mistress and the blackmail of that other woman to keep things covered up thats not a mere 'stumble' ...He should be justly criticized for it! And during his investigation wasnt it discovered he had mishandled field reports and there were missing documents from Afghanistan in a similar fashion? It was a clear choice on his part to do these things I dont see this as an 'oopsies im not a perfect man' situation at all.

Expert on the art of war?
Hamas obviously knew that Israel would have to invade Gaza after these horrific attacks. They are undoubtedly prepared, and must want Israel to invade, which should be a giant red flag. If the IDF makes slow progress and takes heavy casualties, which is likely, they will resort to increasingly indiscriminate force, such as air strikes and artillery. Huge numbers of civilian casualties are inevitable, and Israel will both lose the war of world opinion and invite attacks from Hezbollah and other actors. Israel should think twice about a ground invasion, and consider alternatives. One might be a prolonged siege, with soup kitchens for women, children, and men of non-military age, but nothing for men of military age. Another might be a deal with Fatah, if possible, supporting its return to power in Gaza. As is, Israel may well be falling into a sick trap, and should tread very carefully.
How much you want to bet Israel knows all of that?
So Israel should just give up and wait for the next major attack? Not going to happen with the whole country suffering from PTSD after the Holocaust.
I don't really think it's a big trap, not more than would be expected. I think the real thinking is that if they can get Israel to come in and massacre all sorts of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, it will inflame Muslims around the world and start the final jihad. And I'm sure many Christians are eagerly waiting for this to turn into Armageddon.
Hopefully.
The "humanitarian corridor" which Mexico and Ukraine suggested, might be a way to let vetted, non-combatants leave Gaza to the W.B, Egypt or to wherever they would be accepted 🤗.
Surely, the Arab countries who have "stood" with Palestinians on Friday, will be eager to support the suffering ones with supplies and shelter 😉
Maybe some can live with the Professors and Grad students at Harvard and Colombia and NYU?
At the same time, as Gaza empties of non-combatants, maybe it gets a bit easier to clear out Hamas. But what do I know?

I remember young soldiers that had their careers ended for having smoked a joint at a concert, but this 🤡got off nearly without punishment considering the severity of the crime and rank. The only salute this former infantry officer would render to this should be prisoner has one finger considered middle.
In thinking about this attack vs. 9/11, the thing that strikes me is the number of attackers.
It's almost impossible to protect against a dozen committed extremists. And any country in any situation is going to have small numbers of lunatics (see January 6).
But the fact that Hamas was able to attack with such a large force indicates to me that the Israelis have created a breeding ground for this level of extremism that is at least partially at the root of this event, or at minimum it's size and scope.
I am not in any way suggesting that the brutality of this attack, and especially the targeting of civilians, is justified. But in a way, one can put oneself in the position of the people in Gaza and see how this is the result of the toxic blend of fanatical religious extremism COMBINED with mistreatment that drives such people to extreme acts.
Israel ought to take steps to reduce the environment that breeds it's enemy.
There are a lot "Israel ought to try harder" comments like your flying around the internet. Those saying that says to me that there isn't much willingness to learn the history. That you believe simple answers to the problem are available.
#1 Israel pulled out of Gaza over 15 years ago.
#2 Over the past decade or so, Israel loosened all sorts of restrictions, mos notably allowing for the increase of the export of goods produced in Gaza into Israel (and I presume elsewhere) thus giving a market to the Palestinians that they didn't have before; and increasing the number of work permits allowing people of Gaza to work in israel (the last number I learned of was over 10,000 as introduced by Netanyahu.
#3 As for causing the hatred, or making the conditions for hatred, that is a serious chicken and egg question. But just understand, Hamas started its organization in the mid to late 80s, BASED on hatred of Israel and Jews.
Unfortunately, Israel has been forced to take the steps you suggest. Reduction of that environment will employ high-explosives and bulldozers.
Fortunately, the United States holds six billion Iranian dollars in trust for 'humanitarian purposes'. Just sayin'.
Do you mean that they might consider behaving like human beings

The government with money on the brain acted like they were fighting terrorists for decades. Talk about a joke. Got to keep that money flowing Betraeus.
In both cases to much attention was being placed in internal "threats" rather then external ones. Internal threats can topple existing power holders, while external ones can topple whole countries. For Israel it was the rioting over the changes to the court system, for the US it was the over blown threats from Oklahoma City bombing and issues with the 2000 election.
Thanks for writing out that insight. Much appreciate real ideas in this conversation.
Wrong. Mussolini, Stalin, Franco, Peron, Ortega, Castro, Napoleon, Pinochet and so many others were all "internal." All came to power through some combination of "revolution" or coup or the democratic process. Without the rule of law especially an independent judiciary you pave the way for the guys I just listed. Netanyahu has been working to overturn the rule of law and the secular constitution in Israel. YES this led to protests, strikes and SOME riots. This is what one does when someone tries to break the back of civil and constitutional rule in one's country. There's no way Hamas just suddenly hatched this terrorist attack. The Palestinians want freedom.
Freedom from decades of illegal oppression due to the illegal colonisation of their lands. They seek dignity and to be recognized as human beings, not treated as if they were animals living under an apartheid regime where they can be harmed, deprived of basic necessities like food, water, electricity, and their rights. It's straightforward; many documentaries about Gaza depict their extreme suffering and longing for peace. However, the world has often turned a deaf ear, even as various institutions repeatedly sounded the alarm. Now, in the Western world, all we are capable of is to craft our own narratives, deceiving ourselves. What is the point of all our universities and diplomats if they can’t just simply acknowledge the imbalance. Why are as of now seven hundred! and more children dying? Because of Defense?
What is this madness? Where is our humanity?
