Fantastic interview. It was so nice to hear Billy talk about Back to the Future and Titanic, two of my favourite films. It was also nice to see a scene from your grandads film the Gold Rush which I haven't seen for ages. That was the first film (from what I can remember) that I ever watched. I was about 2-3 years old at the time when I watched that with my grandparents. Probably one of my earliest childhood memories.

I am so glad there will be more Chaplin Talks! Another great show. Billy's pictures from Chaplin's World are fantastic! I am a HUGE fan of your grandfather's. In the late 1980's I read David Robinson's original edition of Chaplin: His Life & Art. I am now reading the 2nd edition of this incredible biography. There are so many Wow! moments in these books. May I suggest David Robinson as a guest? Or perhaps other authors such as Jeffery Vance, Kevin Brownlow or John Bengston?

Thank you so much for mentioning Chaplin's music again. It is the one thing that fascinates me the most about him. I am happy that his music is available on CD from the Roy Export group, but I do wish it could be available in a cleaner format, without the edits, and separate from the final film mix. Some of the soundtracks in the set are too short, despite the fact that there is more music in those films (Monsieur Verdoux for example).

Hi. This is Roy Export. Thanks for your comment. The quality of the tracks varies greatly, depending on when they were made and depending on what we have in our archives. We asked our labs for the best existing audio for each of the films. We used M&E tracks whenever possible, but unfortunately we do not have these for every film. We wish we could have included more tracks from Monsieur Verdoux, for example, but the original tracks were not available and there were too many sound effects or too much dialogue fighting the music to allow for a pleasant listening experience, so the tracks had to be made frustratingly short. But we managed to uncover some rather amazing recordings for other films, for example the original recordings of the music for A KING IN NEW YORK. And for MODERN TIMES, we actually used three different sources in order to make the entire original soundtrack finally available: 1/4" United Artists tapes from the 1950s with no sound effects (the “best” elements received from the labs), unrestored digital transfers of United Artists 35mm optical tracks with no sound effects, and in a few short sections, the film's restored soundtrack with sound effects when the music did not exist elsewhere. PIAS restored and remastered the files, meticulously getting rid of scratches and jumps in the unrestored sections, and they paid special attention to volume balance since there were three sources for the same soundtrack.

@@TheChaplinFilms Thank you very much for your very thorough comment. I will print it out so that I have some information to go with the booklet in the CD set. I also do apologize that the comment was more of a complaint, and less of a compliment. I did love the fact that there was a whole treasure trove of music for A King in New York, because the music in that film had such a variety of styles, even for Chaplin. Actually, since you contacted, I would like to ask, are there any plans to release A King in New York on blu ray in the US? I keep watching for it, hoping to complete our collection (technically, it wouldn't be complete, but we prefer his feature films more than the short films, with the exception of the few short films he added soundtracks to); I hope you don't mind me asking.
Thank you for contacting me; I feel very honored. Any communication with anyone associated with the Chaplin family, or with his films is such an exciting experience for me.

@@garrettbays6942 Criterion/Janus have home video rights to Roy Export's films in the US. Yes, they plan on releasing A King in New York but we do not know when. Hopefully soon! You can always write to Criterion to let them know that you would love for them to release A King in New York on blu-ray soon...

@@TheChaplinFilms I wasn't sure if the rights still belonged to you, and only partially to Criterion; I always get confused how that works. That is very exciting news! I am happy that I was able to watch Chaplin during the time his films were starting to be restored, and be able to share the experience with my daughter, and eventually my wife. We enjoy both the films and the music of Chaplin, and we are so grateful you have made it all available in the best ways possible! Thank you for contacting me!
