  • This UB-Xa Demo was shot end of April 2021, when we already were testing the UB-Xa for two months. This model is Rev. 3; in the meantime I also got the improved Rev. 4, on which I reprogrammed all legendary original factory sounds. Right now there is another improved Revision, which gets in the shops. We Beta Tester always measured, discussed and got each week new Firmware Updates, also based on ideas we gave to the team. So over the last 2 years the UB-Xa improved not only with its hardware but also very much with the software. So in this Demo you get an impression of this synth in a medium stage and not final. Of course it also sounds great, so our progress was around getting the sound as close as much to the original and also get useful features inside of this really incredible synth. In this demo you can hear my programmed sounds for this synth. Other beta testers contributed also a lot of very great sounds, some of them are in another style, more classic and some also very modern. In this demo I demonstrate a lot of softer sounds and some ambient stuff but also some classic brass patches and typical 80 ies lead sounds, many arpeggios and such else. I also take use of the polyphonic aftertouch you can send to a lot of modulation sources like panning, filter, LFO, envelopes etc. This demo I recorded without any effects and no progressing at all. You just listen to a two stereo output signal. Just the pure, dry and raw synth. All sounds are from the UB-Xa expect the drums in the intro track. I am very excited that finally this synth gets to the market. You really had to wait very long, but waiting was worth, absolutely. Thanks for watching and listening, again, Cheers.

what i find amazing about this behringer project is they got so much input from beta testers, the real owners of the vintange gear, listened to them, implemented change requests. I don't see roland or the other big ones doing this. A work of love

It's almost like the music and sounds have went full circle back to the early 80s, which for me who lived through it when i was young and who wanted one of those big unreachable (too expensive) analog poly synths, is a good thing,
I'll need to get one of these, the sounds coming out of this synth are superb.

As an older guy who admired everything that came from the original, I’m so happy this synth has made its way back into the modern world. All the talk about thin sounding and the like, come from people who probably didn’t make music on the original boards. We tweaked, compressed, affected the mess out of those synths! Nothing new here. If you’re a synth enthusiast and you can’t make good music with this….. you’re probably a drummer. And I love good drums!!! ❤

You are absolutely right. I also own a Jupiter 8. It really sounds not impressive, but with some delay or reverb it shines. The UB-xa really can stand a blind test. Only those who own both and have very good ears will find minor differences, maybe.

I'm an older guy too. This is a fine sounding keyboard with some cool features and a true bargain, but it simply does not sound like an Oberheim OB-XA. There are countless amazing demos of the more expensive OB-X8 on UA-cam, which does succeed in capturing the original's magic tone. If Behringer is going to precisely copy the design and look of an instrument it's only fair to discuss if they have also copied the sound of the thing.

Great demo and sound thanks a lot. One question that I didn't find yet in the comments. Looking at pictures of the UB-Xa online : on the rear panel, in addition to the air flow openings left and right in the upper portion of the panel, there is a round grid next to the power socket. This can only mean that this synth has a fan. Hence my question is : how noticeable is it ? I really hope that after 6 years in the making they didn't screw up this great synth with a noisy fan. By experience the fan on some other musical instruments like for example the Yamaha A5000 sampler is really a problem but that was 25+ years ago, so I hope it doesn't feel the same. Thank you in advance for your answer.

It’s December 2023 as I comment. The UB-Xa is currently tempting me as much as the Take 5 by Sequential (Circuits). Considering everything the UB-Xa is loaded with compared with Take 5, what could stop me getting one versus the other? Portability. The ability for me to carry that in one hand from one place to another without needing a private automobile is somehow a bigger priority than having triple the polyphonic notes or the polyphonic aftertouch.
Edit: I understand that it is still smaller than the original Oberheim rendition from 1981. However, it might still be a tough one to lug around.

Hmm yeah.. for some reason it seems to sound a bit harsh and thin compared to most of the demo's I've heard all over youtube. If I listen to Matt Johnson demoing is OB-Xa it just has that sound we all know and love in everything you do with it. It sounds warm and has a nice presence. In this demo I'm kindof looking for that sound, bit it never really clicks. Maybe it's the way it was recorded or the presets, or maybe there's something wrong with me. I'd sure love to hear an A-B comparison with the real one, which apparently is right there underrneath it.. lol.. can we have that?
I mean it's an awesome machine, especially for the asking price, and to then get a 16 voice VCO analog machine with poly aftertouch is crazy. I just really hope the sound is there :)

The problem is that you are expecting the quality of a keyboard that Moog, Sequential, Oberheim, Waldorf… sell for at least 3 times the price (or way more if you think about the One) on a 1300€ synth. Even if it is not “cheap”, in a relative way it is for a big poly synth.

    • @KBizzy

@@vincewizz8534 I understand this… there are still Moogs and Sequentials under $1000 and the build quality is still fantastic regardless. Think this B might be great for pads and complex textures etc but for me, it feels like there is no real sharp transient?!
If I listen to the original OBxa I always think even one voice & one osc could be easily used for bass sounds where you would usually take a solid mono synth. With that quality, pads can shine just super premium deluxe, like many monosynths connected to a huge poly, what they acually did back then.. what I hear from this behringer is actually far away from that quality. Especially when people use the arp in these videos, it sound pretty toyish to my ears, idk if its just me.. the original or many other old synths are just clicky like machineguns.
You own both, you feel the same?
Actually its something I notice with almost all newer synths that are not that pricey, lack of transients and "organic sound" only by complexity. Somehow noone is really speaking about that.

I bought the Novation Summit years ago when it came on the market. The UB-Xa sounds good, but doesn't come near the Summit. Not in depth, fatness, wideness, FX, Matrix Modulation and much more. The Novation Summit costed 800$ more than the current UB-Xa price, and that is the difference in quality you can hear... Sorry. Many people are blinded by the Oberheim-ness of this clone.
