I think a decent tip would be to have characters with designs that are different enough from each other that the reader doesn’t mix up who is who, unless you want to make it purposefully confusing to add intrigue
Hello, i am an OC creator and i LOVE writing and comics and movies. And i really wanna say that even though manga isn't my main field (the main media i consume) i LOVE your manga. Not just blindly but i have reasons. The main reason is that the way you present the story and the "epic reveal" you talked abt, it worked. The story is short and sweet and says very little and still so much. (Especially with the expressions as they say goodbye) And i am left with questions, the good kind of questions. Questions that are awsome for short stories to awake. -how do they know each other -who are they? -how did main boi end up in space? -why can't he get back? -is he working there with some orginization? -are both of them working with a orginazation or was main boi just stranded out there? -did they live together or work together before? -how close are they? -how does main boy have internet connection out there? -what are their names? And so on. That is so admirable and good!! Like you managed to make people ask all this with just a few pages. And now people wanna know more. With all this you got the human hook into place just perfectly!!! Imma study, imma note, and imma get gud✨🤙
How did you simultaneously make me want to read and write more stories while making me cry at what a beautifully drawn and written short story!?!? Amazing work as always and congrats!
Now that I've finished the video that comic is like achingly relatable. How often have I casually asked or been asked to an event, only to have to laugh it off with a "Not likely" because it's a lot more complicated than it should be? "I'll see you soon" sounds more like words of comfort than an actual promise, like how far away is "soon" going to be? How often have I said that to friends only for months to pass? I need to stare out a window for a while and drink some cocoa. Well done, you're first place in my heart.
8:48 Making it up as you go sounds intimidating, but the truth about a writer is that they're always thinking of stories. They could be showering or working on something else; they're thinking about that story. Maybe even years before they actually start writing. That's the fun part about the writing process for me anyway. I have a general idea (kind of like a sketch) of what my story is going to be, but when I start writing, new and better ideas and better ways to tackle certain situations in the story come to me as my pen flows or my keyboard clicks and clacks.
WAIT WAIT THAT'S NOT ENOUGH?? Please don't do this to me 😭😭😭 it's so beautiful and now I'm invested ❤❤❤ You did such an amazing job so it's a well deserved award! Congratulations 🥹🎊👏🏼
the way my jaw dropped when he said "i feel i could've done better on the final panel" when thats literally the most captivating b&w space scene i've laid eyes on... just proves that whats considered "good enough" for one artist could be exactly what pushes another artists inspiration through the roof and into the stars. tl;dr: make what you wanna make even if you yourself don't think it'd be any good, because chances are you haven't a clue the power of your impact.
I was around 42 minutes into the video when I realized... I didn't even know these characters' NAMES and I was obsessed with them!! Beautifully written, beautifully drawn, and I just want these two to be happy and see each other face to face! Amazing comic :)
watching this while working on a comic of my own and alternating between nodding along in agreement to your commentary and shaking my head in amazement at how much more efficient your method is than mine, lol. your work is always amazing and keeps inspiring me to improve my own art; congrats on the contest!
I just want to say, i love this comic!!!!!! I love the reveal, and all the stuff you don't get told directly but can figure out with the backround, etc... I love the character designs and THE LAST PANEL WAS SO COOL! I love seeing your process, I also use clip studio paint, but I make a webtoon with it so seeing it used to make regular comics is very interesting ;D
lol rewatched your first making manga video yesterday and now I'm blessed with more??! My evening plans are set XD and CONGRATULATIONS on 2nd place!!!!!!!! that is amazing well done! 👏👏👏🥳🥳
... Okay... I don't know if I hate you or love you right now, because I am tearing up and connecting to this manga too much... you did a magnificent job, you nailed the whole prompt to the last bit... I am glad we have someone like you in the artist and comic community...
No wonder you got to the top 3. That was absolutely heart breaking! In such few pages! And so visually pleasing. Your art style has always been one of my favorites. Congrats man, you did one hell of a job
Normally I just put these kinds of videos on in the background while I work, but I ended up staying with the screen for a good long while here. That little Chibi Alex during the slideshow is adorable and I love his expressions. Love how the manga turned out too, congrats on second place!
One of the reasons I’ve heard for the differing width of the gutters is that it makes the page easier to read, since it separates each row of panels slightly, letting your eye naturally follow the panels horizontally across the page.
I just read the comic and all the other submissions and man, your panelling is immaculate! Sifting over the composition again and again just blew my mind by how smooth it conveys the story!
holy shit, third place NATIONALLY? that's insanely amazing!!! you definitely earned it! your art style scratches a brain itch and i really appreciate the thorough vid! the short story absolutely made my heart ache.
I love videos like this where there’s a sponsorship but it melds really well with the content and genuinely adds to it with all the tips you’re able to give :D Also its always nice to see creators with so much talent getting sponsored!
Let’s go! This video was rrly motivating and inspirational! Thank you so much for sharing this! Your videos are always the highlight on my day when I see new ones!
really appreciate this actually being structured as an in depth tutorial rather than putting on a speed paint and talking kind of abstractly hoping we understand 🙏🏾 i feel like a lot of people with experience that give advice forget what it’s like to have no experience at all😭
"i wish i could have done a better job" my guy, this project was PHENOMENALLY executed. i wish there were words in the english language to adequately convey how good this little story is, how fun it was to watch your process, how gut-wrenching the storyline is when it all came together in the end. the atmosphere is so perfect, every shadow, the aberration used for the panels where they begin to lose connection, the way we don't even get to see one of the character's eyes until they're getting serious making the overflow of emotions in them pack all that more of a punch--all to culminate in that window shot, when everything so far even when dark or grainy has had a source of light, now to be plunged into almost total black. the DEPTH in these few pages is immense, and your ability to convey loneliness, to convey how even after untold days of being alone that there's that drive to reach out, to forget that the other person isn't even there and make a joke about it, this is an EXCELENT comic, i cannot believe it wasn't first place, and even so, second place in a contest like this is nothing to be disappointed by (though i do understand the sentiment). if your goal was to make a story that inspires others to make their own, you succeeded. and yes, we're always improving, always stepping forward, or hoping to step forward, but please allow yourself to enjoy this as a job VERY well done.
The fact that I’m watching videos rn about how to make a manga for a contest and you post a video about it I don’t know what to say, I look forward to watch it and congratulations on 2nd place !!!
I don't read comics often, but every now and then something like this comes up and it moves me faster than entire shows or movies have. Really excellent work!
I've been a fan of the channel for I think over 3 years and your artworks never cease to amaze and inspire me, your artstyle is so clean and pretty and I wish I could draw half as good as you, and your videos always pop up at the right time to pull me out of my art block and motivate me to start working on my projects
oh my goodness, this was an absolute joy to watch :D i would have commented sooner, but the video IMMEDIATELY pulled me in with just how daunting the task felt, and how comforting you made the process o getting it done feel
I'm gonna get all teary-eyed over here dude gosh dang ;w; -- thank you so much! Both the video and the comic itself video were a helluva undertaking to put together so I'm really grateful to hear such nice feedback about 'em 💖🥺
8:42 i make little comics and storys for fun. So I've had a lot of projects at the same time. I don't really have the time to write the plot outline so i just make it up as i go. Its a more enjoyable process since you don't have it all written just yet the story is still building in your head and its like your the viewer not the author. I just find this process a lot easier and more enjoyable. But thats me if you feel the opposite then thats awesome this is just how i like to make my storys.
Bro I can’t get body proportions right for anything 💀 but in all seriousness I’ve watched you for almost 2 years and watched almost every video you post, your art is amazing bro ❤️
Manga and commercialized stuff is great- obvi But i also holy recommend people look at works from other locations/countries/people as well. seeing how other places approach all of these things or diverse ways to convey things really gives YOU diverse refs to use.
I really like how you ended up not only framing the whole thing for a good short comic- but also ended up making it look so good animated! I don't comment often, but I really wanted to say that because damn the visuals going along with the sound effects at the end! It was really nice~
oooh, the comic at the end was so cool! I'd already seen all the pages while you were making them and that last page still hit hard! Definitely going to be rewatching this video a few times
26:55 this has nothing to do with art (although yours here is amazing), your words about staying on track and continuing to pursue our goals despite failing made me feel so much better. For context, I just failed my entrance exams for med school I worked my ass of for one entire year, and I'll have to study two more years untilI can try to enter again. So your words of doing better next time and seeing failure in a more positive light really warmed my heart. Those are art channels I love : not only great art and tutorials but also universa life lessons !😄
I don't know how to explain it. I know I was watching the way you did your whole process but even then, seeing the final panel just made me instantly cry. both the storytelling in the panelling and those small details like the day counting on the wall is making me go crazy! it was so well done, it's no wonder why you're in top 3, congratulations! 🎉 I've been wanting to make a comic for myself but my brains always jumps from one task to the other so your tips are very helpful!
You just single-handedly refueled my love for manga All those Webtoon stuff made me doubt if going black and white is a good decision but now I'm sure, it's manga I love, not webcomic
fun tip for manga panelling that i saw from a horror manga i read!! colouring outside the panels (e.g. a black gradient) is really effective at portraying the fade in for the ending that you used! i love when mangaka do that because it feels like them communicating to the reader outside of the story. the manga i read was about a young girl who was obsessive and crazy, but couldn't realise her actions as wrong and thought of herself as a good person. what helped to show the reader this was how the mangaka would use black ink splatter-esque splotches in the scenes where the main character would do something unsettling, like a subtle nod towards "this is bad!!" and in the bigger panels where the bad stuff was shown, the entire page outside of the panels would be black!! it was super cool and i think by doing that your comic could have an even bigger impact for the ending than it already does!!
You are not only a fantastic illustrator, but your video editing and writing skills are also so very impressive. Everything you do is so clean and thought out. I am impressed by your accomplishments, especially considering your young age.
i went to read the top 3 comics of the contest, and honestly, i think yours is the best ! even if i didn’t watch this video and read all 3 with a completely unbiased view, i still like yours the most in terms of art, story, and relevance with the theme of ‘connect’. it really showed a clear and unique yet relatable story. i don’t usually comment on videos that are months old, but i just wanted you to know how much this video helped me and how amazing that short story is !
Your voice is so nice, it gives me gender envy 😭 Also keep up the awesome work !! Your art style is SO aesthetically pleasing, and your comics are amazing !! And 3rd place is awesome, congrats
the artwork, the editing, the STORY?!? all of it was amazing- tbh some of my favorite panels were the close-ups on the eyes, the level of detail is wonderful
The absolute gut punch of the last page is truly something; a wonderfully executed plot twist! The video was very helpful as well, thank you so much! ^^
Dude, I started to draw an manga cover of a story and your video is actually a BIG help! And congrats on getting second place! I can't wait to see more of your art videos in the future!
So many helpful things in here, but the one that stood out to me was such a small but big difference: Doing the panel & bubble layout first so u can plan around it. Not only does this help prevent issues later like you said with making sure they fit, but it also means you can ensure any important details of the drawings themselves are definitely not going to get covered up by the bubbles. This way you can always adjust them, but knowing where they'll be is so helpful.
Ah, that hit me right in the feels. The way you structured the video kept enough suspense in the comic for it to keep its impact once you grasp what the whole story is, even though you showed the whole process of making it. I am happy you chose to "exaggerate" the distance between the characters as much as you did. Somehow, it made it more relatable. I am in a similar situation, and no matter how much smaller the distance is than the one between your characters, it does feel like we might as well be living on different planets sometimes, roped into our respective routines and unable to be next to each other in a momens notice. Following the story makes me hope that those two will be reunited soon. Congratulations on third place! It is well and truly deserved!
This is the first comic/manga to make me feel so much heartache for the main character in a long time. Thank you for reigniting my interest! Very helpful since I myself am writing and illustrating a comic. This manga really drew me in and gave me a sense of longing. It is probably one of the best short stories I've ever read, and not just in the illustrated category. Heartbreaking and captivating.
i dont usually comment in youtube videos but this time i just needed to let you know that your story made me feel so much !! (even tho this video is a year old and maybe you dont read the comments anymore hehe) i was so invested watching your process and as the video kept going and i began to understand what was going on between the characters i wanted sooo bad to get to the end and see the whole of it !! now im feeling a little bit sad for both of them 😔 your drawing and the feeling you put into them is so so beautiful no wonder you got in such a high place. its truly amazing. there's nothing else i want (or can) to say to express how it made me feel. best wishes and i hope you can continue to create more incredible pieces like this for a long time
I came here because I wanted some voice in the background while I was drawing but I didn't expect that I would cry at the end, when you presented the whole comic... it's soooo goood!!! Greatly conveyed in the short amount of pages ahhh I just love that!
This was the fastest I've ever subscribed to anyone. Usually when I look at videos like, their voice is so jarring. Yours is so calming and I feel like I can actually learn from you without a headache. Fast enough that my tiny mouse adhd brain doesn't zone out and get bored, while soft enough that I my tiny mouse brain doesn't have to fuck with the volume for 45 minutes
I taught a comic class at a local school this past year (am I qualified? No, but we're in the middle of nowhere so i was their only option) and I had write a 10 page comic... which meant I had to write a four lage comic. I struggled but man did I learn some things. I did, however, start sobbing when you were talking about being able to set up multiple pages.... I also wish I had known that while working on my comic. Very excited about this video and your comic though. Well done!
Honestly saying to add the speech balloons before drawing was the best advice I've ever been given with making manga or comics. I always get so precious with my art at the end that I never want to cover anything and then I have trouble with balloon placement 😅
I got my MC from a character prompt and never looked back lmao, it all started with a character and spiraled into the most behind the scenes work I could've ever imagined doing at this age- but I love the plot and story I've given her and the rest of the main cast
I'm planning on making a webcomic with my friend and this video came out at the perfect time cause I've been needing to figure out how to start the concepts and storyboards. Thank you Alex
On the subject of competition, there was actually quite an interesting study done on the psyche of olympic medalists. Between bronze medalists and silver medalists, bronze medalists are reportedly happier about their result than silver medalists. This is because bronze medalists are closer to no medal than getting gold, so they tend to be content that they got any medal at all, whereas silver medalists just missed gold. It’s pretty interesting, as silver medalists actually did better than bronze. What I’m getting at is that performance and skill do not necessarily equal happiness, so try not to sweat it too much. There’s always going to be more opportunities. (This is just something I thought of, not overly related to anything in this video)
I have never read a manga once, but I would buy one of yours as soon as you decide to publish one. WOW, so much storytelling and emotions in just 8 pages
One of the most beautiful short stories I've ever read- in eight pages, you've managed to make me feel for these two characters and their situation and left me to wonder how they ended up like that in the first place. I'll likely never know the answer, and that's the beauty of it- it'll always be just a glimpse into their little universe✨
man your way to make thumbnails are incredible unique for what i had studied. Good to know, its more freely to focus on the scenes for each speach of and make every panel like a separed illustration witch reward with unique panels and dinamic. Good job.
No wonder you won a placement in this contest. Not only is the comic itself visually amazing, but the story really hits you hard and is a really good representation of the theme. I don't know if it's because I'm a little baby or what but as I was reading along in your ending showing off the final product I almost started crying over these characters who, as far as I'm aware, don't even have names?? Why am I so emotional over them in less than 8 pages?? Not only are you so good at art but you're also so good at storytelling, too. Leave some talent for the rest of us, lol!
IM SO HAPPY FOR YOU! THE ART IN THIS IS *chefs kiss*!!!! YOU'RE VERY MUCH DESERVED OF BEING IN THE TOP 3 :DDDD so close to being 1st place, BUT HEY, IT'S STILL A REVELATION, ISN'T IT???? (also the story of those two characters seems so gripping, that i'd love to read a whole manga with them ahahaha!!) so proud of you bro, keep it up
As someone who has a deep love in their heart for comics and manga as an art form (and trying to guide my art in that direction myself) this video is like a treasure chest of useful information as well as inspiration. I’m not much of a story writer myself, so the fact you’re able to come up with such a rich story and pack all that nuance into this mundane, calm scene is so inspiring. It’s one of my favorite ways of storytelling so to see it done so well with such a short space is- to put it simply -just really cool! Currently I’m trying to hone more of the technical comic skills by illustrating scenes from my practical library of podcasts that I listen to (the formatting of this one is giving me ideas for a particular collection of scenes from Wolf-359, actually). Hopefully someday I’ll be able to create these beautiful original worlds as well! Sorry for the essay, but I just wanted to say how much I appreciate all of the effort put into this! The video, the comic, the advice, etc. much love!
This is S T U N N I N G, Alex! I can’t wait to see what other competitions you enter! 3rd place is still pretty damn impressive! Also, kudos on the sound design in the final reveal; it’s a great example of “less is more.”
an interesting bit of advice I came across recently is that your script is what you want to say and your thumbnails are how you want to say it. I think that is good advice.
(EDIT: sdjsfdfg I can't believe I edited this whole video and didn't realize I misspoke -- my comic got 3rd place, not 2nd! 😅 Thanks for all the really kind words y'all have been leaving in the comments either way though, it really means the world to hear how the story I made mighta resonated with you 🥺💖)

Sorry for naming your character they seem like fun

I've been a fan of the channel for I think over 3 years and your artworks never cease to amaze and inspire me, your artstyle is so clean and pretty and I wish I could draw half as good as you, and your videos always pop up at the right time to pull me out of my art block and motivate me to start working on my projects
oh my goodness, this was an absolute joy to watch :D
i would have commented sooner, but the video IMMEDIATELY pulled me in with just how daunting the task felt, and how comforting you made the process o getting it done feel
I'm gonna get all teary-eyed over here dude gosh dang ;w; -- thank you so much! Both the video and the comic itself video were a helluva undertaking to put together so I'm really grateful to hear such nice feedback about 'em 💖🥺
@@ABDIllustrates of course, man! you deserve every bit of the praise. you’ve worked yourself to the bone getting to this point, and it shows
8:42 i make little comics and storys for fun.
Tbh in the span of 8 pages you've made those two feel like real people!
Manga and commercialized stuff is great- obvi
But i also holy recommend people look at works from other locations/countries/people as well. seeing how other places approach all of these things or diverse ways to convey things really gives YOU diverse refs to use.
Shilling my current favorite Chinese Manhua Lanxi Zhen/Lanxi Town always and forever.
Congratulations on second place! I almost cried seeing the finished product, it really hits different once you understand what was happening.
I really like how you ended up not only framing the whole thing for a good short comic- but also ended up making it look so good animated! I don't comment often, but I really wanted to say that because damn the visuals going along with the sound effects at the end! It was really nice~
I’ve been so excited for this video when you said it’d be long
aw thank you dude, hope you enjoy it! XD
You explain things exactly in the way my brain learns them. This was so helpful, genuinely.
oooh, the comic at the end was so cool! I'd already seen all the pages while you were making them and that last page still hit hard!
Definitely going to be rewatching this video a few times
That last panel really changed the whole game I’m sobbing
that comic is beautiful. made me tear up
if this is second place, i can only imagine how breathtaking first place must have been! congrats!
you don't understand how much motivation this is giving me for my own comic im planning its actually insane. beautiful video and wonderful advice!!!!
How am I literally watching the process and still utterly gasping at the ending???
Witch craft!!!!
This is actually my dream video to watch thank :0000
I don't know how to explain it. I know I was watching the way you did your whole process but even then, seeing the final panel just made me instantly cry.
both the storytelling in the panelling and those small details like the day counting on the wall is making me go crazy! it was so well done, it's no wonder why you're in top 3, congratulations! 🎉
I've been wanting to make a comic for myself but my brains always jumps from one task to the other so your tips are very helpful!
You just single-handedly refueled my love for manga
All those Webtoon stuff made me doubt if going black and white is a good decision but now I'm sure, it's manga I love, not webcomic
Whoa the production of this video is really impressive!! Love all the little animations and visual aids!
fun tip for manga panelling that i saw from a horror manga i read!! colouring outside the panels (e.g. a black gradient) is really effective at portraying the fade in for the ending that you used!
i love when mangaka do that because it feels like them communicating to the reader outside of the story.
the manga i read was about a young girl who was obsessive and crazy, but couldn't realise her actions as wrong and thought of herself as a good person. what helped to show the reader this was how the mangaka would use black ink splatter-esque splotches in the scenes where the main character would do something unsettling, like a subtle nod towards "this is bad!!" and in the bigger panels where the bad stuff was shown, the entire page outside of the panels would be black!!
it was super cool and i think by doing that your comic could have an even bigger impact for the ending than it already does!!
I loved the sort of animated bit at the end with the music! It really pushed the story to the peak!
You are not only a fantastic illustrator, but your video editing and writing skills are also so very impressive. Everything you do is so clean and thought out. I am impressed by your accomplishments, especially considering your young age.
tbh hearing that the csm creator make up the story as it goes is lwkey mind blowing with how he tie the plot together💀
i went to read the top 3 comics of the contest, and honestly, i think yours is the best ! even if i didn’t watch this video and read all 3 with a completely unbiased view, i still like yours the most in terms of art, story, and relevance with the theme of ‘connect’. it really showed a clear and unique yet relatable story. i don’t usually comment on videos that are months old, but i just wanted you to know how much this video helped me and how amazing that short story is !
Your voice is so nice, it gives me gender envy 😭
Also keep up the awesome work !! Your art style is SO aesthetically pleasing, and your comics are amazing !! And 3rd place is awesome, congrats
the artwork, the editing, the STORY?!? all of it was amazing-
tbh some of my favorite panels were the close-ups on the eyes, the level of detail is wonderful
thank you so much dude! 💖
Brb time to go explode
The absolute gut punch of the last page is truly something; a wonderfully executed plot twist! The video was very helpful as well, thank you so much! ^^
Dude, I started to draw an manga cover of a story and your video is actually a BIG help! And congrats on getting second place! I can't wait to see more of your art videos in the future!
You’re already living up to your dream of inspiring people with your art! I’m so motivated right now, what a beautiful story. You deserve the best
This is very helpful for me as I’m a young artist and I wanna make a comic/manga of my own🥰
The comic feels achingly relatable. Well done
Heck! The cracked glass on the window in the final panel feels ominous 0.0 Especially paired with the indication of how long they've been there 0n0
Man I'm crying right now this guy's art is so cool
I seriously adore your art so much, I’d kill for an art book from you, I rewatch your videos all the time when I want inspiration
I've been missing your uploads ❤
This was the fastest I've ever subscribed to anyone. Usually when I look at videos like, their voice is so jarring. Yours is so calming and I feel like I can actually learn from you without a headache.
Fast enough that my tiny mouse adhd brain doesn't zone out and get bored, while soft enough that I my tiny mouse brain doesn't have to fuck with the volume for 45 minutes
Nice job on this manga
I taught a comic class at a local school this past year (am I qualified? No, but we're in the middle of nowhere so i was their only option) and I had write a 10 page comic... which meant I had to write a four lage comic. I struggled but man did I learn some things.
I did, however, start sobbing when you were talking about being able to set up multiple pages.... I also wish I had known that while working on my comic.
Very excited about this video and your comic though. Well done!
GODDAMN!!! Absolutely earned!
Thank you so much for posting this
I've never needed comforting more
On the subject of competition, there was actually quite an interesting study done on the psyche of olympic medalists.
I keep coming back, and every time again, this one shot gives me chills. I'm both touched and really inspired. Also love seeing your process
Good job.
.... You're making me wanna continue a comic I've been working on- Damn-
Btw ?? That art is so good??? I love your style so much !
Leave some talent for the rest of us, lol!
congrats on the contest! also awesome to see the chronically tired science man rep!
Babe new ABD Illustrates video just dropped stop everything
That short story GRIPPED my soul.
an interesting bit of advice I came across recently is that your script is what you want to say and your thumbnails are how you want to say it. I think that is good advice.
CONGRATZ ON THIRD PLACE !!! 🎉🎉🎉 can't wait to watch the process !
