Untrained people don’t have a zone 2-3. You have to spend time on the pavement or a bike to even get them. Most people will stay in zone 1 walking and shoot to zone 4-5 otherwise and bonk. Running is how you get fast rucking. Need both, not either or. I say this as a wildland ff who rucks for a living.

I run x3 a week and lift x2. Out of my 3 runs only ONE is considered long distance. The majority of my running is track style work outs. The other day I did x8 200’s. Another one I love is x2 400’s, x2 200’s, and then x2 100’s…. My point being: just like the mil doesn’t teach strength; they really don’t teach running. I really doubt you’d be sad to have a dude on your team that can go for a half mile at most peoples 100y pace. The Rangers ran a solid mile to exfil in Somalia. Aim for a solid mile time.

Hold on. You may have missed something.
Long runs build more than aerobic fitness. Long runs train muscular endurance that builds mobility. I get that patrolling and rucking are great (I rucked documented hundreds of miles in the military from rucking once to twice a week for 7 years). But the muscular endurance is costlier in recovery from rucking than running (but you need both).
My wife runs ultras. I am an RX CrossFitter. My fitness will keep up with her all day. But her legs can hold up all day in moving beyond me. That’s why I transitioned to a hybrid model.

He gave me some advice I'll pass on: You're good at WHAT YOU DO. Wanna be a good bike rider? Ride your bike. Rock climbing? Go climb. Rucking? Go rucking! We had an LT in our unit we called Mr. Pushup. The guy was an animal, arms like tree trunks, could do push ups that looked like he was having a fit. 2 minute PT this guy was pumping out like 130 pushups. My skinny ass could do 70 or so. BUT...obstacle course time...I could run rings around this guy. Moved like an ox. Both have their place but I think we can all agree, RUNNING SUCKS. 🤣

  • @Shadrach666
    @Shadrach666 2 місяці тому +1

Very long runs (26 miles) are not all about getting physically fit! They are about pushing through barriers and learning not to give-in.
If you train to be able to run 26 miles in under 5 hours you will need to spend a lot of time running (4 days a week typically, 1 hour run 3 times, then a 10 miler one day). That training, as you carry a pack with increasingly heavy rocks in it as you get fitter will get you super fit. If you cannot do a 26 mile run cross-country carrying a heavy pack - you ain't as fit as you think.
Then remember - you have to be able to fight a battle at the end of the run. Get fighting fit. That's also the title of one of the best books ever written about getting fit to fight in actual combat.
'Fighting fit' by Adrian Weale. I don't know him, but the training he describes is what I started with - before going Next Level. Not everybody is blessed with a physique that allows them to go beyond that, but for those who can, it's all about your mind - psychology. Most people are tougher than they realise but lack the motivation/discipline to go that extra mile. Traditional full-contact martial arts can help in that respect. If you can't get up every day and hour earlier than you do today, for two years - you're probably not able to go to that 'Next Level'. Martial arts for five years can help you develop the psychological tools to be able to do that (in my experience - and observation of others).
You should also be doing your unarmed/armed combat training, martial arts, weights and other physical activities (I did rock-climbing in high mountains after walking in a few miles carrying the climbing gear with buddies, canoeing and kayaking at sea and in fast rivers, often mountain running in the evenings typically 4 -10 miles, 3000 ft ascent then descent, swimming - a mile a day every other day and more once a month, swimming at sea and in rivers). You will eat like a horse during that next-level training and you will have learned how to be resilient and have the mental toughness you are going to need. You need to be able to switch-on and go at it without warning. I think a lot of people - even a lot of those 'in the military' don't realise how hard the best fighting men train and for how long. Two years of that (with extra time for rest, recovery from inevitable injuries, vacations, family time etc) and you will be fit enough to do pretty much anything you are asked to do.
Running in shorts and a T-shirt in good quality running shoes with added insoles is the start of a fantastic journey to 'Next level' physical toughness and endurance. Anybody can fire a gun and kick a door down. Not many can do it after a 26 mile mountain run carrying 1 weeks worth of kit, ammo and food... Choose Your own journey - don't let anybody lay down what is possible for you - they are Not you - and quite possibly not capable of what you Are.

Spending a lot of time at Zone 2 makes the body develop the mitochondria which will handle the lactate produced from hard work. The more mitochondria you have, the better you will perform over time since you will be able to produce more work consistently. If you ruck, you most probably get into this zone, but its important for Zone 2 workouts to not break into Zone 3 as the body will then get into a different energy mode towards anaerobic state, and even if you then lower your HR you will not truly develop mitochondria until after over 30 min. Zone 2 training should last for minimum about one hour to be productive. Also, the chart regarding pulse is not applicable to most persons, as it is highly individual. The "220-your age" does not work. It can be tested only with a lactate measurement and increasing load.

running makes far more sense because you need to build endurance because you can't always ride in a truck everywhere. not only do you have to be able to walk at a pace that will get you there as fast as possible but you still need to have enough left to do the mission in which being still fit enough to run may save your life. I've seen thousands of soldiers in my ten years in and i will say 100% that only those who could keep a good pace on a run could also still have enough energy after a forced march to do more. those who could not keep a good running pace were spent after a good forced march and this is without the equipment. if you add equipment it always means more stragglers, etc., and less combat ready at the end especially if they can't maintain a good pace yo begin with. also, in closing there is a price for carrying all that weigh around for years and the more you do it the more it will become apparent later on in life. so when not needed i'd say skip the weight because once you get old enough your back, neck. etc., will thank you.

    1. Zones 4 and 5 are also good for building endurance. You do "intervals" of them.
    2. We don't fight in tennis shoes and shorts. We also don't fight in gym shorts with a back brace. Argument invalid.
    3. Obviously, the best training for rucking is rucking. The next best thing is aerobic endurance training of any kind. Third would be weights.
    4. Rucking requires a big enough aerobic engine to move your body weight +40 lbs 4 mph or faster *and* the base strength to lift that weight for X amount of time. As much as people might not like it, that's mainly aerobic, and barely weight lifting at all.
    5. If you want to ruck as fast or as long as possible, then you need that base strength, yes, but you want as big an aerobic engine as possible.

I enjoyed the explanation, but the title is misleading. To say running is useless for combat endurance means that every selection program in the US military, and most boxing gyms, and muay thai dojos (or training gyms, or Thai equivelent to 'dojo') is training their athletes wrong because they utilize running extensively as an endurance training tool. I came from a running background, and thankfully was a competitive athlete in high school, and adapted a little quicker to the calisthenics and rucking than some of the more strength oriented athletes (power lifters and body builders) largely because a flight of stairs in the didn't leave me breathless. Running certainly didn't stay my primary focus moving forward, but I'm thankful for the benefits mentally and physically over the years along side the weight training and rucking.

@@Valorius That's not what I said at all. The implied was that, as Grunt suggested rucking in full kit rifle and all, would draw the wine box Karen's unwanted attention, and therefore a $hit ton of problems. My suggestion was to sport all normal attire.

Urban combat, carrying a javelin or any other plus combat backpack and all the stuff, 30 Celsius degrees and he says running is useless as combat endurance training. Long night awake guarding the boys and he says running is useless as combat endurance training. Run and do burpees because the enemy is sh00ting at you but you have to take those positions, and dude says running is useless as combat endurance training 😂

distance running is useless not because of some silly heart rate training chart... my heart rate can be in zone 4 when a girl smiles at me... distance running is useless because the key to it is running efficiency and form. You will NEVER have efficient movement patterns especially while "running" in a combat situation while in full kt... rucking is amazing, Stairmaster is amazing, incline treadmill is awesome, patrolling/combat drills is great. Save the track work in running shoes for anaerobic focused SPRINTING... tldr fuck running anything over a mile
