Just tried this with a spare dell power supply and a HP all in one. It seems to work find! Thank you!
Great to hear that 👍🏻
Those who did not understand the language you spoke could understand by seeing what you were doing. But you didn't give this a chance by making unnecessary accelerations. Thank you very much
Sadly, it's not perfect, but also it's impossible to please everyone.
I was about to set up the voltage divider as per your directions. But when I sliced open the plug there was a small circuit board and I had wrecked it. So I thought bugger it, this is a technical expression here in OZ. And i just soldered the ground to the outer of the plug and +19 approx to the inner, the "data pin" fell out anyway. and it worked. This is with a HP laptop and a Toshiba PS. So thanks I wouldn't have even tried without your video.
Well...the important thing is that it works 😄👍🏻
First of all - THANKS ! -- I have a HP ProBook 4540s ; aftermarket power supply for it has voltage of 18.62 vdc on center pin. Dell power supply I have is at 19.70 vdc. ( voltages measured with voltmeter ) . I just cut the center pin wire as you did and connected the white wire ( + voltage ) to the pin through a 10K ohm resistor ( more than likely - not needed ). This puts the 19.7 vdc on the center pin. Worked like a charm . Followed your principles here - just adjusted since I had a good supply that I could double check the voltages. HP apparently does not keep one supply that will work on all the laptops - your pin voltage was about 5 volts
Welcome! Glad my video inspired you :)
I made a Compaq laptop charger work with my hp probook thanks to this tutorial. Youre the best!
Bro I had this kind of setup previously with just one 10k resistor my battery wouldn't charge , this time when I did exactly what you did my battery NOW CHARGES!!!!
Awesome! Welcome!
Dell uses a one-wire protocol which tells the laptop the charger model (Dell uses 60W for laptops and 100W for docking stations both with the same connector).
Someone called "hclxing" has reverse engineered it and found a way to hack around it.
The ROM inside the dell charger contains just the name "DELL" the wattage, voltage, amperage and serial number. However most laptops only seem to care about the wattage and the other stuff isn't read.
Thanks for sharing this information 👍🏻
Thank you very much for your excellent video.
For your information, my aftermarket HP 19V 4.74A 90W power supply has 15.1v at the sense pin.
Your supply was 19.5V. Perhaps this is an important difference.
Very best wishes sent to you from the UK
Glad it helped
this really works well for me, does the R value remain the same when applied to different amperes or is there a formula for different amperes
Thank you sir. Same problem. I will try this method.
Welcome!

What is the app/link to that calculator ? 🤔
Thanks ! 😇🤗
To have a sturdier finish, your should get a piece of rigid plastic tube and cut it to the needed length, then introduce the cable in it (and push it apart in the cable) and a piece of shrinkable tubing that has bigger diameter. After doing what you did in this video,
you cover it with the plastic tube, and then with the shrink to finish the job. This will give enough mechanical strength to it.
Adding a simple diagram of this solution would clear enough any doubt in values of components to people whose mother tongue is not English.
I am expecting a new video from you with the alternatives as the following :
a) Using Dell charger to power a Lenovo 3 pin jack notebook,
b) The inverse situation where the existent charger is either an HP or a Lenovo to power the Dell or the other option. Values of components and voltages involved with diagrams would be most appreciated.
Hello. Thank you for the info. Sadly, a new video will not be made in the near future, as I don't have any more laptops to work on.
I Have a same problem. It's working thanks dear.
Welcome!
Good job
Thank you!
OOOps! Romanian accent detectetd! Nice video, thank you very much for the valuable info!
Yup :))
Thank you for watching!
Thanks a lot, this let me run a HP 705 G3 Mini with an old Dell Notebook Power Supply. Maybe i make myself an adapter out of another powersupply and the connector of an old notebook.
Glad my video helped 👍🏼
Any idea would it be easier to hack inside AC case? Why did you cut at connector? Tnx for the tip
It's hard to open the case.
I like how you have the same ideas that I do so I have definitely subscribed to your Channel I'm having issues right now with an HP Envy touchscreen laptop that I wanted to hardwire but for some reason I can't get any Chargers to get it to turn on
HPs are a pain to deal with...
Mulțumesc. Thank you for this. Can you show us how to open up and fix a broken (bent) Type-C USB charger plug for Lenovo IdeaPad laptop?
Sorry, but I don't have such a charger.
Okay, thanks. These new Type-C plugs are fast but are very easily bent. The round plugs such as in your video are stronger and much more durable.
Could you please let me know what multimeter you use? Thanks!
Random Chinese no name.
Does the modern charger turn off when it's data pin is not connected to a receiving circuit?. What I mean is does this centre pin have to be terminated somewhere for tge charger to work and can it be modified to keep working?
As far as I know, at least the ones that I used do not turn off.
I have hp omen 17 rtx 3070 11800h but with 200w charger. Hp 330w charger is damn expensive where I live (300$) and dell Alienware charger 330w is cheap (20-30$). Can i mod the alienware charger to work like oem hp 330w charger?
It might work but you need to find the required voltages.
Where do you buy just a 4.5x3.0x10.0mm plug to fix it - do you need to really throw away the entire power supply when the plug is damaged or gotta hack like this? Very environment friendly as it look, Dell, HP, good job!
You need to buy from random online stores aftermarket plugs and hack them.
Great for the enviroment ☹️
How to do the same with asus ux550v which resistors are needed?
I do not know.
Thank you for laptop and chager manufactures
So funny

@@UltimateDIY Hey , I need a help from you , can you please help m
I have a dell charger and replacement charger with same voltages
But the replacement charger pin doesn't mach
And Original dell charger is not working (Actually I killed it 😂)
I tried to cut the original charger pin and connect it to replacement charger
But there are 3 wires in original charger (red, black, white)
Replacment charger only have 2 wires(red, black)
What shoud I do ?
Not much that you can do. The 3rd wire is for the center sense pin. Without that the laptop will not accept the charger.
Wat size is dat
Thx
Welcome!
Thank you. that's great. please help me. is it possible to reverse this? i mean is it possible to modify hp charger to use in dell? and my second question, my dell 210 watt adapter is unknown by dell because of my fault in short circuit between center and positive pin with voltmeter. can i fix it with voltage divider? do you now how volt are in dell 210 watt center pin?
Yes, it's most likely posible, but I have no idea about the voltages you need. Try to search for them on forums.
@@UltimateDIY I searched but not find. Would you please tell me which forums maybe helped me?
Not possible, as I just use google search same as you.
Great
Thanks!
Salut! Dar cum ai ajuns la valoarea de 6v...adica de ce 6v , scrie pe undeva cat trebuie sa treaca prin id pin ptr HP ?
Salut. De pe forumuri. Au testat altii pana a mers.
have a dell charger with the wrong plug, but i do have a hp charger with the right plug but the wrong data signal.
Can i cut the plug off and transplant it over, as long at power and amp match ? cant se why not
Yes, it sould be fine. Just make sure you don't cut it close to the laptop, so there is no stress in the join area.
@@UltimateDIY thx, is there such a thing as a del to dell adaptor ?
have loads of old dell chargeres but just need a adapter for the plug.
big hole to small stik!
Yes, there are adapters. I have ones for HP for example.
Salut, am un incarcator dell. si vreau sa ii schimb cablul cu mufa! am unul aftermarket si nu corespund culorile cu cel original! nu am mufa originala sa stiu tensiunile de iesire, ma poti ajuta sa imi spui de exemplu firele originale albastru vine in mijloc, negru exterior si alb interior lateral ?
Salut. Din pacate nu am nici un incarcator dell momentan ca sa pot verifica.
thank you so much, followed your video I made my own, 2.5K + 1K, so give the centre pin about 5.5V. thanks again. ( firstival, I listened to someone here, put 10K to centre pin, so gave it direct V+19.5V, it worked and my HP 600 G2 started, so happy. But, I found the CPU speed locked at 0.79GHz, the Minimum. So I went back to your opinion.
Glad my video helped! ✌🏻
@@UltimateDIY I want to let you know, my HP 600 G2 MINI, I bought it for only 7 Canadian Dollars from a swift store. only put a pcie ssd in to it and runs no problem. i5-6500t 20G RAM and BT7265 card. and 2 DP OUTPUT.
Wow! That is the deal of the century 👍🏻
@@UltimateDIY hahahahaha, tag price is $5.99, plus tax.
Nice!
I have HP elitedesk 800 g1 usdf pc. That pc required 19.5V 135W/180W adapter. I have dell 19.5V 130W and dell 19.5V 180W adapters. What resister should I get?
I don't know for that model. Did you try directly without resistor?
@@UltimateDIY Before I tested directly. When computer start show message like that "Please use hp adapter". Can you give me advice?
I would sell the dell ones and get a dedicated hp.
Or you can try to search on forums what voltage does you particular pc model expect and build the resistor voltage divider accordingly.
@@UltimateDIY Thank you :)
I'm thinking of buying a second hand Dell charger to power my Sony Bravia Television. Would I run the positive wire to the middle pin and cut the blue wire out all together? My house got broken into and the thief was kind enough to leave the tv, but he took the power supply and the remote control :D
That is a dumb thief :))
Sadly I do not know the colors of the wires. A multimeter would help you a lot.
Thanks for the quick reply!.... in a normal power supply cable is it just two wires, a positive and negative? ....with the positive leading to the pin in the middle is this correct?
EDIT: Maybe no modification is needed at all actually. The middle pin is just a sense pin for charging batteries, so it should still power my TV right? ...assuming correct polarity and voltage/amperage.
In theory yes, the laptop detects trough the middle pin if it is connected to an original charger. Your tv should not care about this.
Thank you for the help!
Can I use hp charger for toshiba satellite laptop?
If they have same plug, same voltage, same polarity and at least eqal amperage.
I connected a HP charger to my Dell laptop and it worked, but it hat noticibly worse performace and now it also has worse performance on the Dell charger can that be fixed?
Maybe just some settings got mixed up in Windows power management.
@@UltimateDIY They are set exactly the same as they were before. I may have possibly killed the power adapter ID chip on the motherboard :(
For my 19 v 3.16 a 2 wire charger i had to put 470k resistor betveen (3 wire hp plug) + and centre pin. Without it my processor was locked with speed 0.78 Ghz.
I noticed that it doesnt need continious connection with that pin.. if i connect central pin and wire with resistor and then remove that wire then my computer works fine until i remove charger from computer( even if i turn off computer doesnt change it back -only if i remove charger from computer it gets 0.78 Ghz lock again).
It doesnt matter if i connect that pin at startup or any time i want .. it detects something and goes from 0.78 Ghz lock to normal.
i am not sure is it ok to leave that wire connected or its better to connect it only if processor gets locked at 0.78 Ghz?.
(if somebody knows answer then i would like to hear it)
Anyways thanks-your video was helpful and interesting.
Hello. You can leave the wire connected. I did a similar modification internally to a hp laptop, so it would accept any type of charger.
Very good info thanks ;) A HP pavilion 8000 needs 12V on the sense, I installed a tiny 10-turn potentiometer into the 10Amp Dell power supply and 'tuned' it!!
I want to use hp charger in dell laptop, can you help?
Better get the proper charger. That is my advice.
Dell uses a one-wire rom chip inside the charger which tells the laptop that it's a Dell charger and how many watts the charger can put out (Dell makes 60W and 100W)
Someone called hclxing has reverse engineered the charger and written a program for a micro controller to talk to the laptop as if it were a charger.
You can find the article about it when you search "hacking the Dell laptop power adapter".
Nice. Thank you for this info 👍🏻
what is resistor number?
I explain that in the video.
Ciudat comportament. Dar e bine ca ai descoperit problema.
What is gonna happen if don`t connect the 5 volt pin at all mine is working even without it
Depends on laptop model. Some older ones don't use that pin. Newer ones don't work without it.
@@UltimateDIY ohk thanks
Welcome 👍🏻
@@UltimateDIY i think i was wrong with it i just noticed that my laptop wasnt charging but it was being detected that the adapter is plugged in and I can use like this if I want to use the laptop without the battery
@@UltimateDIY was there any problem with this method how long did you use you laptop after doing this
I'm confused. Why are you doing this when it already works with HP
The quick blinking shown at the begining is actually showing it's not working.
Does this work with any HP laptop?
You need to research your particular model and see what voltage it's expecting on the central pin.
Ahhh okay, thank you!
@@rxt1991 I believe there is a difference between HP 19.5V supplies, and 19v supplies (and maybe others).
You will need to know the correct sense voltage for your own particular supply.
How have they not standardise laptop chargers like they did with usb nearly 10years ago. And apple has magnetic ones for longer than that. The amount of waste is redicules shouldn't even have charges same as phones nowadays. Comon dell I love manufacturing quality and that vaperchamber cooling genius. Stop hating the environment standardise laptop plug already and make them magnetic. Seriously if I have to movie to apple just because of a plug like brake my balls here man.
I think it's already happening with USB type C and Power Delivery.
So wrong. For Dell, ds2502 1-wire chip contains serial data on center pin.
Thanks for that info.
I admire your handiwork using a "soldering gun", but you should do yourself a big favor and buy a quality soldering iron/pencil. Thanks for your informative video. Ethan
Yup, you are right. I have one now :)
Any one try this? Any success story?
Yes, mine :))
I just tried it and it works. I do not have those resistors at home so I did with 470 Ohm and 1 kOhm. But is better to use bigger resistors.
The success story is in the video. If you want to do it yourself, you probably also understand what's being done, so why ask? If you don't understand, as the question seems to imply, you definitely shouldn't try. The odds of getting it wrong are pretty high. Still, FYI, a voltage divisor formed out of two resistors is installed so that a voltage similar to what the stabilizer part in the power brick expects to see.The choice of resistors isn't trivial. Their sum should yield a small enough current that they don't get warm. Yet they need to provide a small enough resistance that the input resistance of the sensing circuit remains trivial. The choice in the kOhm to tens or maybe hundreds of kOhms is acceptable. Also, their ratio needs to provide by the principle of the potentiometer those 6V out of the required output voltage (probably around 20V)
Why you do not give us a schematic diagram instead of a lot of talking
I prefer talking. Take it or leave it.
