You should point out that the "federal land" there is actually *unceded* land, that belongs to the natives. The federal government is trying to _buy_ that land from the Sioux tribe with $1.3 billion*, and the tribe has consistently refused. This land belongs to them in accordance with the Ft. Laramie treaties, and has _not_ been ceded.
New England the land may technically be federal land but it is autonomous to the US government meaning they must ask permission before encroaching on the land.
New England The exact equivalent would be the US invading Mexico to build a pipeline which obviously is against international law the same goes with native American Reserves.
Off-topic but I'd like to commend the Vox team for making these short documentaries. They are quick, educational and the animations make them fun to watch too. Keep doing what you do!
Clarence Parker III Well not for the corporation behind the pipeline but let's face it, it's hard to feel sorry for those with already lots of money trying to screw over the rest of us.
thisscreensucks people in corporate with salaries of 6 figures or more, are the ones you're talking about, not some guy who makes 20/hr. And every one should have the drive and ambition to make more money and rise to the top. That includes minimum wage workers as well. Dog eat dog world
You forgot to add that initially the pipeline was supposed to go through Bismarck, but due to safety concerns it was rerouted to go outside of the town, through the reservation's water supply. And that results of spillage are virtually irreversible.
Bullshit, the Kalamazoo spill was cleaned up and down stream was drinking water from it in 3 weeks. The tribe wants the pipeline to go throw the reservation so they can get money.
The reservations water supply has been under plans to be moved 70 miles away from the pipelines crossing for years before the end of 2016 because of natural gas pipelines that go through the same spot, so the pipeline was not going to affect the reservations water intake at all. Also going through Bismarck would have been 11 miles longer and it would have been way harder to route through the more densely populated area.
Bismark's overwhelming white population protested the pipeline for health reasons, just like the Sioux. But when it comes to the welfare of the Natives... well, any accurate history book can tell you where the favor has typically fallen.
the fact that so many people don't understand how sacred the natives are surely blows my mind. I have immense respect for natives all over the world. I'm an atheist but I'll say, bless their hearts.
Freek De Jonghe i know. I mean basically the natives in all the Americas and the known natives in Scandinavia. I know what I'm saying, you don't have to explain. why do people feel the need to explain when you all know exactly what I mean??
first thing for you to do is go vegan if you arn't already....best way to personally help the planet....if you arn't then take a hard look in the mirror at what you, as a greedy consumer, are doing to hurt our planet
Talk about how many Native American protesters were killed during this protest. Also please make a video about how many Native Americans were murdered by the US from its inception
***** the difference in this case I think, would be that the persecution continues to present day. as the dakota access pipeline incident has made clear
Their burial sites wouldn't have been disturbed had they identified their culturally important sites, the other tribes did and that is why the pipeline goes 111 feet below their sites. Standing Rock can only blame themselves.
Lasaret if the standing rock reservation and they’re peoples don’t want a pipeline on their land then accept it. it’s not your land to govern or have opinions on. your not native.
One Dead Pixel Mr. Trump was indeed a shareholder of the company until he sold his shares a few months ago. He still may own stock in the company that is with the pipeline company but it's unknown if he sold those also. So, in the past, he was a shareholder... sources all over the place btw
He's not the guy who sold land owned by native Americans to an oil company. Want to know what entity did that? Here is a hint it was the Obama administration.
A quick google search will tell you that the reason the other minority groups in the US have strongly increase, but not the Native American population is because the US government only stop their genocide a few decades ago. Though, it seems now the corporations have join in.
I just said what I wish. I wish every place and its people on earth were peaceful and fair to its environment. As I see it, the natives has a healthier relationship with the nature and its inhabitants. Some Europeans just occupied someone elses land
That was hundreds of years ago. This land is also now also belongs to many other people. That's like saying Europeans shouldn't be allowed to live in Europe because that's not where they originated from. It's completely retarded.
Deebo Molina It certainly will be if we don't stop boiling the planet. We need to transition to clean energy, and fast. Leave all those fossil fuels in the ground.
I mean it's pretty self-explanatory - one side wants to use it to make more money, the other side thinks the environmental risks are too high to proceed with the project. If you want more than that go read an article on it, most people just want the quick version.
himura kenshiro Go to TYT politics UA-cam, they been the only news tube Chanel that been covering this story. If you need to know, no so called news group had the balls to report this and now that Obama finally stepped in after months of police brutality towards the natives, he found his balls to stop this pipe line act of crime.
This video is too short. I enjoy a lot of Vox videos because I gain details I didn't already have regarding an issue. This video feels over simplified and abrupt.
IizUname no, it's meant to appeal to a generation of adults who demand news in micro bursts. and I understand that. but Vox usually does a better job of servicing that audience while still getting the information out.
IizUname you obviously need to reply the video because they actually stated the opposite of what you just claimed "to make us assume the fight is over". Pay better attention
Good quick summary, but it is by law Native American land according to a long lasting treaty that is still valid today and preceeds any ownership anyone else claims to have
I just wanted to say I just unsubscribed from Vox. I am a democrat and against trump, etc. But I really think their videos are just too biased. They have never released a video talking about Hillary's issues, only Trump's, and videos like these just show that they do very little to investigate the conservative standpoint. At this point it doesn't even seem like they are trying to stay unbiased.
There is no such thing as an unbiased news source so you might as well unsubscribe from all the news you subscribe to. Also, why would you want an unbiased source? An unbiased source might allow for absurd ideas to be given credibility just for the sake of not appearing biased. Facts are not unbiased.
The key terminology he used was "too biased" not "unbiased". A Fact is something that is not biased, that's why we call it a fact, that's literally the definition of a fact.... "Fact - a thing that is indisputably the case."
Phillip d'Amérique well I think they should at least try to stay fair to both sides. An "absurd idea" to you might not be to someone else, so they should represent it anyway to avoid bias.
I'm honestly shocked it took you guys this long to out out a video about this as its been going on for months, and that it's only 3 minutes long? There is so much more information about this pipeline that needs be known. Try a little harder next time Vox.
It ain't that western world is overpopulated, but emerging market countries. Tell them to stop mass producing and immigrating. In contrary, I feel like the western world is underpopulated by its native population that built up their countries for more centuries. And that, now the demographics are just changing for the worse in the western world.
What victory? 200+ pipelines cross north of this crossing. Note they cut the response to "200 oil leaks in 6 years", 3 major (more then +1000 barrels) the rest so minor no one noticed. The water B/Ser's aren't protecting anything. In one month they will issue a permit. Let's see the twinkles protest in 40 below.
Adam we have enough oil to last 500+ years. We produce so much food we burn as fuel 20% and waste another 30%. Just how long in the future to we plan for, because so far we are good for 500 years.
thisscreensucks Try again sfb world wide we "humans" burn 20% of food for fuel and waste 30% more (first world spoilage, third world rats and miss handling) . Fracking has allowed the accessing of 10X more oil including most old played out oilfields.
Bahaa Saleh The plague wiped out 2/3 of Europe's population in the 14th century, making it easier for Muslims to invade Europe. Was that an unfair war? As for better weapons, Rome did the same thing. They had ballistas, onagers, advanced military tactics, etc. Were their wars unfair too? If a group of people is so backward they couldn't even invent the wheel, they deserve to be conquered. They had a chance to win, but they didn't adapt.
I'm sorry but I really don't think you understand anything about Native American Civilizations. The reason why Europe, Asia and Africa prospered so much is because of geography. The latitudiness of the East Hemisphere allowed plants and animals to grow anywhere from China all the Way to Western Europe. This helped foster trade and advancements among Asian, African and European civilizations. On the other hand North & South America are very longitudiness and rugged. The unfavorable geography of places like Panama and the Andes made trade and technological advancement difficult. A majority of the Native American Tribes were nomadic people, they rarely if at all grew crops or domesticated animals. When the Europeans arrived, sure foreign disease wiped out a large portion of Native Americans but looking at it in a social darwinistic view, the Native Americans did not possess the "genes" in order to adapt and survive. It is the hard truth that the Europeans were so technologically advanced that even if no Native Americans died from disease or alcoholism, they still would not have been able to fight off European guns and steel.
snowsandrivers blackfyrestorm Yes, the Maya never took little children and ripped out their hearts while still alive before throwing them down the temple steps. That never happened! The Mongols never destroyed entire towns, killing every inhabitant in the process if they didn't surrender! That never happened! Neither did the Turks do anything to Armenians, Greeks, and Assyrians! Or when they conquered the balkans and anatolia! I'm sure everything was peaceful and without oppression! Oh, and I'm sure the congolese tribes never warred against each other and make each other slaves, preposterous!
This video is garbage... I want a 10-15 minute video that explains multiple concepts of this issue. Both sides with no bias. Past legislation that supports both sides. Also fact check maybe the top three arguments of both sides (I now both sides lie). Vox lately pushes out some content that is completely half-ass'ed!
Rusty Kline we killed them to near extinction and when that happened to tho another people we pointed the finger and said "that's bad" now we are trying to further screw them. I'm sorry but two stories isn't the opinion in this conversation!
SkrappyX3 that's sloppy thinking, right there. You do realize that other Native American tribes in North Dakota profit handsomely from pipeline deals, right? There are appropriate channels and methods for providing restitution to Native Americans for historical persecution by the federal government. That's not this. This is you being manipulated by catch-all guilt rather than examining the specific incident.
Irregardless of the question over land rights is the simple fact that the pipeline is too close to a major source of water and the company has a history of leaks. Also, It would be great if VOX made an attempt to interview a representative of Energy Transfer Partners and gave us more of their side. What are the alternatives? How many pipelines actually run through the US already and what is their safety record. Everyone complained about the Alaskan pipeline because it would suffer from earthquakes and affect wildlife but it turned out Caribou liked humping each other near the warmed pipes and it actually benefited the country as a whole to the tune of $400 billion.
Mohinder Suresh given they went through all the proper channels and all was legal, they are complaining over spilt milk. the new pipeline mirrors another, where else should they put it? running the oil by truck is more costly, and more dangerous to that environment they are supposedly fighting for.
Taylor Braithwaite People will cite some instances where things have failed, like the oil leak in the gulf, but it is important to know those situations are an extreme rarity. "Oh no, 5 planes crashed in the last month. Flying isn't safe at all!" Never mind the thousands of flights that take off every hour and land safely. People love a good fear story as reason to not do something regardless of the facts.
Its not too detailed, an evil corporation wanted to desecrate sacred land and violate treaties with th standing rock sioux people and they built illegally
Asther Silver People need oil. You think you could go a day without oil? Doubt it. People make money off of consumer wants and needs, not from thin air.
Ethan Roberts That’s why we need to get away from oil and towards renewable energy sources- then we wouldn't have to worry about oil and relying on the Middle East.
Have you heard the NASA news reports about unobtainium? Unobtainium is the most energy dense element on the periodic table. Scientist have already detected it on planets outside our solar system. They say a few grams of it could power a large city for over a year. If we could bring some of that back to earth, even 100 KG worth the time and cost to get there would be worth it. They think the tech will be ready to travel outside the solar system by 2100.
this isn't slanted. these are facts. this is what's happening to these people. we should be bending over backwards to listen and support native americans whenever we can considering our history with them.
Be nice to actually have a news story that told both sides. This story is charges with every aspect the left holds dear. native americans, environment, big oil etc. I have yet to see a realistic both sides version of this story. We will continue to use oil from other places sending money and jobs overseas. 3.7 billion dollars to build modern infrastructure to utilize US resources should also be part of the story.
You should have also mentioned how the pipeline was originally rerouted due to safety concerns for city dwellers (mostly white). Trevor Noah recently discussed it on his show, but no one else has.
You should take a moment to look at a map and realize that there already is a pipe north or Bismarck and that if this pipeline would go north of Bismarck it would be a few kilometres longer, making it more expensive
I love your videos for a very clear reason. When i read about a trending topic on social media i often get to see a deeper look and further explaination from your channel. I Often find myself interested in every topic you choose to make a piece about and i love it. Keep going!
I wish this video would have spent more time addressing whether the concerns about environmental risks are overblown or not, since that seems to be the crux of the issue. A couple independent expert opinions would have been useful. I've learned to be skeptical of "The Party of Science" when it comes to environmental issues.
Chimfish I agree, while there is always risk there are sufficient ways to mitigate it. I'm really curious how solid the pipeline plans and execution have been.
I have basically zero trust in oil companies, "Party of Science" or not. I don't see why anybody would trust these massive corporations that put profits over humans and the environment.
That's where it would be interesting to see how it holds up to industry standards. Contrary to popular belief having a spill or leak is extremely costly to business and there is great profit incentive to avoid problems.
My friend, I hope that you would donate to the protesters, if not become one yourself. Either that, or donate/subscribe to TYT, that has been one of the few media outlets to cover this story consistently. It makes a big difference. Go check out TYTpolitics here on youtube.
Suck it up .The whole country is crossed with pipelines. The United States has the largest network of energy pipelines in the world, with more than 2.5 million miles of pipe.
Rl Badger great if we have so much pipage then why would we ever need more over sacred land? If the Native Americans feel that it could endanger their only water source, then why even bother? It's their land
There has been no archaeological evidence of any burials in the area cited. The Missouri River is already crossed a billion times by oil pipelines, including one a number of miles north of the proposed new pipeline. The water supply, if its going to be ruined by an oil line, is already ruined. All they have accomplished is delaying needed infrastructure, requiring a vital resource to instead be trucked or transported by rail to where it is needed. Also, that it is stopped is a bit of an overstatement. Its delayed pending more evaluations.
it's not just the natives that rely on that water source, over 3 million people depend on the Missouri River for clean drinking water. They're protecting the water for everyone.
I know this just happened but it would have been great to have the respond from Energy Transfer Partners which basically said they have no plans of stopping construction or rerouting the pipeline.
Daniel The thing is. The pipeline was gonna be built over land that was not Native American land. BUT, the pipeline would have a terrible effect on Native American land. The river is extremely important and building the pipeline in that area would possible destroy the water supply of the Natives. Water is life.
Daniel There is, at least there should be. But the government is claiming that the protestors are on 'federal' land and should evacuate for their personal safety, from what I hear I various news sources. Thing is, they're just calling Standing Rock 'federal' land as an excuse to try getting them out of there, when it is in fact 'native' land.
I've also heard that even though some land is reserved for the Natives, that land is STILL ultimately federal land.. just reserved federal land... I cannot verify this tho.
good short doc, but you forgot to mention that it is not over... also the fight at the kinder morgan pipeline on canadas west coast will be just as bad as this and is just starting, if you guys want to help I just released a video on how to do so quickly and simply without costing you a dime.
Fossil fuel energy is not only limited and hazardous, it is also outdated. Coal and oil have been in use since the 1810s. That's 200 years of the same process. There needs to be a push for new ways to harness energy. An outdated terminal system isn't effective anymore. The environmental effects from fossil fuels add more only add to the problem. Another fact is that oil, coal, and natural gas are very limited compared to something like wind, nuclear, etc. The question to ask is what will happen when the world runs out of oil?
Oil will be overpriced before we ran out of it... The real question is, what's the alternative today? There's alternative energy, but none we can use on a large scale that would be cheap. So we must do with oil for now.
IizUname I think it is because we don't have the technology to make it cheap, like electric car. Battery are not cheap, we can't do much to make them cheaper.
You are so delusional, not only is oil the only feasible way to power things like trains, planes, rockets, trucks, ships. It is also used to pretty much make everything that comprises your house. Wind is an absolute joke, nuclear has potential and solar has potential in the future when the tech gets better. But that doesn't solve the problem of needed oil to make nearly every household product.
Get rid of any products derived from oil then you can complain, why don't you start with anything shipped by truck, plane, ship, or trail, and then follow it up with anything made of plastic. You can look up the rest of the products derived from oil, there are to many to list here.
Despite the so-called "Activist's" claims, .........The Sioux people has never been dis-respected or downtrodden by President Trump, and any damages they may have uncured, have been worked out with the tribal elders.
Please let them run it through my back yard, I'd like a mailbox check each month. The United States has the largest network of energy pipelines in the world, with more than 2.5 million miles of pipe.
Alan J na. i disliked it beacuse 9 out of ten tribes in the area said yes to the pipeline. standing rock did not respond. the deadline passed and it was passed as ok. so it was their fault this is happening. sooo know hope you know now.
Dear Vox, you forgot to mention the 100s of meetings they had discussing the route. You said, 'for now their water is safe." Yet you did not adequately demonstrate that their water was ever in danger. I've been waiting to get some straight answers on this whole topic but the truth is still evasive.
rwgeach it isn't insane. feelings shouldn't matter in anything that has a chance of helping our nation. would you rather a group of people be upset or our country doing things easier and faster?
It's the fact that its polluting the Sioux water supply, not the fact it goes through their land. If you look at the map, the pipeline clearly goes north of the reservation
? Vox is probably one of the least biased. I'd be happy if you could name me news sources that you consider less biased. I'm curious as to which you'll name and if legit I'll check them out.
Luis Gonzalez Vox is one of the most liberal-biased channels. At first I thought it was satire it was that biased. ONE OF THEIR NEWS ARTICLES LITERALLY SAID "Korryn Gaines pointed a gun at police, but she didnt deserve to be shot."
That is a great example of what WE all people can accomplish together, without violence. It also shows how corporations and governments treat us. Wake up people!
This is incredibly one-sided coverage. I'm very disappointed. Here's one example: the video mentions an increase in oil spills, but it specifically ties that to the increase in oil production. The net result: no actual information about the intrinsic safety of *this* pipeline. Also, having a single water source is unremarkable; what is worth mentioning is the tribe's new water treatment plant, whose intake valve is far downstream of the pipeline. Almost every other piece of information here is pointedly *the tribe's interpretation* of the facts. How about reporting on the pipeline's risk to the water supply and cultural sites, and the credibility and nature of the tribe's legal claims? How about doing that by consulting with independent experts in the respective fields? I hate that there's no honest journalism outlets which can be appropriately skeptical of both ETP and the Standing Rock Sioux. I feel like this protest has been given way too much credit in liberal culture.
"Agreeing with what I think" and "Open minded" are two totally different things. This video is one sided. No matter which side you are with, they did not take the time to evaluate both sides and present all the information. This was not open minded. They came in with an agenda and cherry picked what they needed to hammer it home.
the company doesn't need permission from the government to keep building, they'll just receive a fine for everyday day they do build. The fight is not over they can still receive permission if the Environmental Impact Report says they can build there which it probably will because it's money at hand.
Great video and thanks for spreading awareness, but why didn't you talk about how many natives were harmed and killed from this? How the government lied and cheated them? And the effects of the pipeline on their water, and what this land means to them?
itsalivia23 A pipeline is the safest way to transport eater. They shouldn't worry about oil in the water. Yes it is bad that the police are attacking them and should be stopped.
itsalivia23 you need to share this information if you have this knowledge. Be the voice that others need to hear when you have something that the people need to know. It's important for you to talk and share, don't question those things that were not expressed by others, but add to the conversation by talking about what you know and things you think others need to understand. Please share this information, I too would like to hear about what you have to say.
bellyn reyes I would love to share my opinion to those around me but many of my friends and family do not take me seriously since I'm only a fifteen year old girl. But I'd be happy to share my opinion with you if you'd like to hear
Pls could you, explain how are they taking the pipeline.. right on the river? (thus creating some kind of dam) Cant they take it underground (below river levels), like the railway underwater tunnels? Or over land, so for that portion, the pipe doesnt touch the water? Also pls explain, if the Natives are worried about leakages and pipeline related rust/chemicals mixing with their water.
Mordecai Epsilon Well I would like to thank you for answering my question. I was unaware that Bernie Sanders had said or done anything about Dakota pipeline situation. I am not always great at following stories in the news, so I sometime develop holes in my information.
DeansList It wouldn't bring jobs to locals... And once the pipe was built then it's just there underground, again not providing anything to small local towns. This isn't like a factory people could get jobs at...
estimated 12k jobs during construction, 500 jobs after for maintenance etc. An estimated 156 million in state taxes during construction and 55 million in taxes annually. Those taxes help infrastructure and create more jobs
You don't seem to know a lot about how small midwestern towns actually get money. Not everybody lives in the city of the suburbs you know. A pipeline going through the area would bring thousands of jobs to towns that might only have around 50 people per square mile. That makes a BIG difference percentage wise to these small towns.
This is factually incorrect. Prior to any pipeline, the land being occupied by the protestors is not Indian land. What happened was the tribe said they owned that land and it was unjustly taken from them by the Federal government. The court agreed with the tribe and awarded the tribe $150 million dollars as compensation for the land. The tribe did not accept the money and still claims the land is theirs. It is not, the court stated it is nit their land and compensated the tribe for it. That's as good as it is going to get. Now the pipeline company owns the disputed land and is putting a pipeline through it. It is the pipeline company's legal right. There has already been environmental studies which all pasted. In realty this has nothing to do about water or the environment. It has to do with the fact the Tribe did not like the original court ruling and still wants ownership of the land. The tribe should have taken the $150 million. It is private land, so do you want the government to tell you what you can or cannot do on your land? That's the question.
How can these corporate representatives claim that the extraction and transportation of oil poses no threat to the environment? If only there was an incredibly cheap and plentiful fuel source that produced no air pollution, no water pollution, and only a small amount of solid waste… *cough cough* thorium fission *cough cough*
jethro035181 it has the force of law only in limited area, and not in contradiction to laws passed by congress. The process involved in this type of dispute is covered by an existing law, Executive order can not over turn it.
It's not the end of the fight at all, this is simply a way for obama to say he tried to stop it. The trump administration is just going to push it through
Did any of you see that protester woman whose arm got horribly mutilated by a grenade or something? You could see right to her bone, I'm glad these sacrifices were not for nothing.
While this is good as they should try to minimize risk from pipelines, I hate that so many people on my side of the aisle just reject the idea of pipelines in general. In this case (since it goes through aboriginal land) and with this company (since it does have a bad leak record when compared to other oil/gas companies), it makes sense to protest it. However, as an environmental engineer, I see pipelines for what they are, inherently better than the alternatives. Oil is going to be transported and produced regardless of whether there is a pipeline or not. But when oil is transferred by truck or by train, there is a far greater risk of spills happening (see the Lac Megantic disaster in Quebec, Canada only a few years ago). We shouldn't just reject the building of all pipelines like I see many on the left do.
Thing is, the risk for using rails isn't actually worse, There was a single year when it skyrocketed due to two specific disasters, but the general safety record is better. There are also legitimate questions about how much it needs to be transfered, or more specifically, how many times. The pipeline can be seen as a gift to refinery owners down in Texas, making it cheap to move crude to them and the need to transport the finished product a second time. Refineries could be built up north, but the southern ones do not want the competition nor do they want to carry the full cost of moving raw materials to their sites. So the pipeline can be seen as a massive, expensive bit of protectionism.
***** Oh for sure, it's never going to be easy to determine where to put pipelines. It's always going to be a compromise. And also, the money that IS invested in pipelines isn't being syphoned from renewable energy. It's money that was going to be spent on transporting it other ways. These pipelines are paid for by the respective companies. Now, if tax dollars are being used to subsidize the building of pipelines, then I would definitely agree that that is not a good investment for the government to be involved in. Then I agree with you, this money should be subsidizing alternative energy instead.
Garrett Carpenter "There are better alternatives." Ok, and most people across the planet us gas/oil to run their cars, make anything plastic that they use, heat their homes, etc. Are there alternatives? Sure. But you can't just blink your eyes and everything has switched to the alternatives. You can't just cut oil supply and move on like that. You need to transition over time.
killerfrenchy That's not what I am saying, but the pipeline is just continuing our dependency on oil and gas. The better solution would have been to invest in wind or solar farms not an oil pipeline.
No, since liberals are for protecting minorities and conservatives are against eminent domain. Only corporate greed pushed it this far as nobody like you and I support it.
You should point out that the "federal land" there is actually *unceded* land, that belongs to the natives. Off-topic but I'd like to commend the Vox team for making these short documentaries. They are quick, educational and the animations make them fun to watch too. Keep doing what you do!
And lack essential infos to understand the matter, but yay! animations!
Rna I agree, this wasn't very well explained but I felt like thanking them since I binge-watched almost every video of theirs this past weekend.
Joseph S. Okay :)
Careful though, they are very biased.
Rna I don't think so? Look at the Israel-Palestine video for example.
+Rna That's why you do your own research, but yay! depending on 3 min videos to give me all the details!
This is a win for not only Natives, but also the entire United States in general.
Clarence Parker III Well not for the corporation behind the pipeline but let's face it, it's hard to feel sorry for those with already lots of money trying to screw over the rest of us.

Peter Cahill if I as in their shoes, I would do anything to keep and make more money, and if you were in their shoes you would do the same
they won the battle, theres still a war.
thisscreensucks people in corporate with salaries of 6 figures or more, are the ones you're talking about, not some guy who makes 20/hr.
And that results of spillage are virtually irreversible.
ycccv ju This is the most important thing in all of this mess. Bismark was able to move it.
LynnisaMystery What is your source for the population of Bismarck protesting the pipeline?
the fact that so many people don't understand how sacred the natives are surely blows my mind. I have immense respect for natives all over the world. I'm an atheist but I'll say, bless their hearts.
MarI sabel These people form the vast diversity of Human life. What is life without colors.
Uhm there are only a handfull of countries outside the New world where they have 'natives'
Freek De Jonghe i know. I mean basically the natives in all the Americas and the known natives in Scandinavia. I know what I'm saying, you don't have to explain. why do people feel the need to explain when you all know exactly what I mean??
MarI sabel Known native in Scandinavia? You mean the Saami? They are barely natives, they're more Nordic than anything.
Freek De Jonghe native nordics yes. I live in Sweden with southamerican parents...I know what I'm talking about. give up ffs.
I hope American people, and everyone around the world, can stand together, united, to protect our precious planet from greedy politicians.
CanadianStig
That will never happen
CanadianStig One day man :)
first thing for you to do is go vegan if you arn't already....best way to personally help the planet....if you arn't then take a hard look in the mirror at what you, as a greedy consumer, are doing to hurt our planet
From what? The United States has the largest network of energy pipelines in the world, with more than 2.5 million miles of pipe
Monica this is the reason why most people detest vegans in youtube comments.
so full of themselves.
Talk about how many Native American protesters were killed during this protest. Also please make a video about how many Native Americans were murdered by the US from its inception
Everybody knows how many. Almost all of them
like, 3 maybe 4. I think one of them stubbed their toe once.
MetalPhoenix13 200 spills? That is nothing compared to the average.
+
***** the difference in this case I think, would be that the persecution continues to present day. as the dakota access pipeline incident has made clear
Well you know what they say about disrupting an indian burial ground. This project was cursed from the get-go
I've seen that episode of family guy.
I've seen that episode of family guy.
Indian burial grounds are a well known trope and didnt originate from family guy
You guys should make a video on Nestle's former CEO. It relates to this subject on water. He said "Water is not a human right, should be privatized"
This is good for now.... but let's keep in mind who our President Elect is...
orange
Mr. Van Dyck source?
One Dead Pixel Mr. Trump was indeed a shareholder of the company until he sold his shares a few months ago. He still may own stock in the company that is with the pipeline company but it's unknown if he sold those also. So, in the past, he was a shareholder... sources all over the place btw
ServantToTruth it's certainly easy to believe haha, I was just legitimately asking for a source, but I've since found a few.
He's not the guy who sold land owned by native Americans to an oil company. Want to know what entity did that? Here is a hint it was the Obama administration.
I wish the Native Americans reclaimed North America.
A quick google search will tell you that the reason the other minority groups in the US have strongly increase, but not the Native American population is because the US government only stop their genocide a few decades ago. Though, it seems now the corporations have join in.
Michel I'm native and that is such a stupid thing to say.
What to you mean reclaim? It's theisr, just like every other American's.
Water is life
Samuel Flg water is everywhere
Deebo Molina
It certainly will be if we don't stop boiling the planet. We need to transition to clean energy, and fast. Leave all those fossil fuels in the ground.
Samuel Flg water is pizza
Actually safe water will be a massive problem in the future.
Psh, 100% of people who drink water die.
wait thats it ? 3 minutes ? this video is way to short and doesn't cover every thing .
I agree. Can we get a longer, more detailed video on this topic?
I mean it's pretty self-explanatory - one side wants to use it to make more money, the other side thinks the environmental risks are too high to proceed with the project. If you want more than that go read an article on it, most people just want the quick version.
himura kenshiro
Go to TYT politics UA-cam, they been the only news tube Chanel that been covering this story. If you need to know, no so called news group had the balls to report this and now that Obama finally stepped in after months of police brutality towards the natives, he found his balls to stop this pipe line act of crime.
You literally chose the single most biased news channel on youtube. Not a credible source, not at all, TYT
the phillip defranco show also covered the story as well
Thank you Veterans for protecting their water! #WaterIsLife
This video is too short. I enjoy a lot of Vox videos because I gain details I didn't already have regarding an issue. This video feels over simplified and abrupt.
Michael Epperson it is meant to make us assume the fight against oil is over.
Congratulations to Native Americans of Dakota.
Then trump killed that chance
Good quick summary, but it is by law Native American land according to a long lasting treaty that is still valid today and preceeds any ownership anyone else claims to have
And what treaty is that?
Fort Laramie Treaty of 1851,
Obama's administration just threw out that treaty and sold the land to an oil company.
Elevindollar Hmm, what will the "Native Americans" do against tanks and jets if the government wanted it ? Oh yeah nothing.
Berzerk Troll What is that supposed to prove?
I just wanted to say I just unsubscribed from Vox. I am a democrat and against trump, etc. But I really think their videos are just too biased. They have never released a video talking about Hillary's issues, only Trump's, and videos like these just show that they do very little to investigate the conservative standpoint. At this point it doesn't even seem like they are trying to stay unbiased.
Btw I support the native Americans in this issue.
I thought I was the only one who noticed how ridiculously single-sided they are.
Natalya Johnson the construction won't actually be stopped, spread the word.
That video is from yesterday. Where are your sources?
You do know that the news that the construction would stop for now came out a few days ago.
I'm honestly shocked you didn't know that
Try a little harder next time
hardly a victory, we must all work together and keep this from happening. This and many other environmentally disastrous projects.
It ain't that western world is overpopulated, but emerging market countries. Tell them to stop mass producing and immigrating. In contrary, I feel like the western world is underpopulated by its native population that built up their countries for more centuries. And that, now the demographics are just changing for the worse in the western world.
sure its a victory...its not moving forward, for now.
we won a battle...not a war.
Fracking has allowed the accessing of 10X more oil including most old played out oilfields.
it is their land, this is all their land, we just took it
No. We went to war and we conquered it. Not our fault they're so bad at fighting.
But we can't change history, but we can change the future.
Rusty Kline checkout a video by Jeff Holiday. he is Pro pipeline, but kinda not at the same time
Rusty Kline post this video and who made it pls
"Irregardless" is not a word. "Regardless" is the word you are looking for.
What about the other pipeline that already runs near by? Why are they not outraged over that?
3 minutes is a very brief time to explain a very detailed and convoluted issue.
Its not too detailed, an evil corporation wanted to desecrate sacred land and violate treaties with th standing rock sioux people and they built illegally
all they want to do is make money. so sad
Businesses wanting to make money isn't bad. It's what businesses do. Now operating without legal/gov. checks and balances. That is bad.
Mike M Lol nice Avatar reference.
The Vox version, slanted just the way the left likes it.
as opposed to slanting it the way the right likes it, huh....
this isn't slanted. these are facts. this is what's happening to these people. we should be bending over backwards to listen and support native americans whenever we can considering our history with them.
Jeff High why do you care if that pipe is built?
Jeff High how is it slated to the left?
You should have also mentioned how the pipeline was originally rerouted due to safety concerns for city dwellers (mostly white). Trevor Noah recently discussed it on his show, but no one else has.
You should take a moment to look at a map and realize that there already is a pipe north or Bismarck and that if this pipeline would go north of Bismarck it would be a few kilometres longer, making it more expensive
1:25 the sound she makes with her mouth (ululating) we also do here in South Africa. Great to see other cultures around the world do it too :)
I found it really cool :)
George Asamoah-Awuah
We are all beloved relatives, that's why, brother. :-)
even in south india we do that during a godess festival.
The picture at 0:02-0:03 is my grandma! I'm so proud of her :)
@Make White People Proud Again rest in rip
I love your videos for a very clear reason. When i read about a trending topic on social media i often get to see a deeper look and further explaination from your channel. I Often find myself interested in every topic you choose to make a piece about and i love it. Keep going!
Martin Burman Except it will still be built :/ the fine for going against the law is only 30k. Vox is propaganda.
The pipeline company is going to carry on regardless and accept the fines.
Crazy ey..
Hillary would've been a really good president.
Except that part where we all die.
Neither Trump or Hillary would be a good president. You troll lol.
+Tom _F1_ stop exaggerating.
Better than Trump for sure but let's be honest, she would probably have made an mediocre president.
She would've been REALLY good, just saying.
Taylor Braithwaite I do! That's why we shouldn't trust them and make sure we have a government that strongly regulates these people.
Thanks for covering this story when it has been stopped... This has been an issue for months, only now you make a video? VOX sucks a big one...
Stops is an overstatement. Its pending. Given how little the evidence against the pipeline holds up to any close evaluation, its unlikely its dead.
You are correct, I just didn't feel like getting super symantic in a quick YT comment...
There isn't much to report on. Indians and protesters want no pipeline, and the oil company does.
Also, I was surprised vox would cover it because of how simple it was. You should be happy they did this video at all.
If Donald actually goes through the courts and gets this pipeline through, I don't know what I'll do
My friend, I hope that you would donate to the protesters, if not become one yourself. Either that, or donate/subscribe to TYT, that has been one of the few media outlets to cover this story consistently. It makes a big difference.
Go check out TYTpolitics here on youtube.
Zedek already subscribed to TYT. While I can't embrace all that they have to say, I do believe they're generally doing the right thing
***** nah if you support Trump's push to finish this pipeline over the standing rock territory maybe you should
Suck it up .The whole country is crossed with pipelines.
Neighborbob well explained.
billion?
it's not just the natives that rely on that water source, over 3 million people depend on the Missouri River for clean drinking water. They're protecting the water for everyone.
The construction will not stop.. Any alternate route will run across water.
Justin English
But why even have it to begin with? They ALL Leak.
I think the land hasn't been disturbed for over 500 years how would we feel if someone wanted to dig up our burial ground(our cemeterys)
Could you elaborate on how these consultations took place and how they were done differently than expected? Thanks.
+
Vox is killing it with these great videos.
Hey I heard about this on the Daily Show. GJ to the Native Americans on reserving your land!
it's not stopped.... it's temporarily denied for that route
don't be misleading Vox, the fight isn't over yet
Maybe they should have gone to all the meetings they were invited to by the company to discuss any issues they had with it?
I know this just happened but it would have been great to have the respond from Energy Transfer Partners which basically said they have no plans of stopping construction or rerouting the pipeline.
Isn't there a Law that Native Americans have and can object to the pipeline because it's their land?
Daniel from the maps and what I have heard, it looks like the pipe isn't on their land, but would effect their river
I would think that the government owns all lakes and rivers for environmental reasons.
good short doc, but you forgot to mention that it is not over... also the fight at the kinder morgan pipeline on canadas west coast will be just as bad as this and is just starting, if you guys want to help I just released a video on how to do so quickly and simply without costing you a dime.
Shawouin it can't be used large-scale because we do not invest enough in it.
You neglected to mention the water source was already moved 70 miles away.
Being part native myself I find great joy in this announcement!
Nathan Guyette what is wrong with you
Despite the so-called "Activist's" claims, .........The Sioux people has never been dis-respected or downtrodden by President Trump, and any damages they may have uncured, have been worked out with the tribal elders.
I support the pipeline
***** actually, millions of people care..lol
Let them run it through your back yard.
Please let them run it through my back yard, I'd like a mailbox check each month. The United States has the largest network of energy pipelines in the world, with more than 2.5 million miles of pipe.
I need to go over and tell my neighbor to give his checks back?
SgtSupaman They granted the Native people millions and it doesnt even run through their land...
I bet some people disliked this video because it mentioned Donald Trump in a negative way at the end, even though it was fact. Just an idea.
Alan J na. i disliked it beacuse 9 out of ten tribes in the area said yes to the pipeline. standing rock did not respond. the deadline passed and it was passed as ok. so it was their fault this is happening. sooo know hope you know now.
Dear Vox, you forgot to mention the 100s of meetings they had discussing the route. You said, 'for now their water is safe." Yet you did not adequately demonstrate that their water was ever in danger. I've been waiting to get some straight answers on this whole topic but the truth is still evasive.
And you had to include donald trump had something to do with this
Bob Smite he did say he would pass ot immediately because thats thousands of jobs
Enrique Junior thousands of jobs and money for the economy vs sacred land... sorry but the economy is more important than feelings.
Bob Smite "Everybody is always blaming for everything"
- Donald Trump
Luke the Vampire Slayer, pretty sure Andrew Jackson used the same argument, and it sounds just as insane today.
rwgeach it isn't insane. feelings shouldn't matter in anything that has a chance of helping our nation. would you rather a group of people be upset or our country doing things easier and faster?
It's the fact that its polluting the Sioux water supply, not the fact it goes through their land. If you look at the map, the pipeline clearly goes north of the reservation
While I agree vox on this issue, vox is a news source that is wayyyyy too biased
Name one completely non-biased news source, just one.
Oliver Fried it's too bad that they're lying to us. Construction will not be stopped by a measly fine.
SSJ Without violence they attacked leo!
I'm referring to people who were standing there, not the law enforcement who hurt them . They stood peacefully, together as one. That's what counts.
SSJ They attacked the police.
A day late and a dollar short Vox.
Oh no, 1 day short? That's horrible! Vox is so bad at this.
😑
Thank you Vox for making amazing open minded videos. It always makes my day when I see the pessimistic comments on your videos that make no sense!
"Agreeing with what I think" and "Open minded" are two totally different things. This video is one sided. No matter which side you are with, they did not take the time to evaluate both sides and present all the information. This was not open minded. They came in with an agenda and cherry picked what they needed to hammer it home.
It might be satire poking fun at vox's bias.
the company doesn't need permission from the government to keep building, they'll just receive a fine for everyday day they do build.
Yes it is bad that the police are attacking them and should be stopped.
they had plenty to worry about regarding the quality of their water considering pipe lines leak ALL THE TIME.
itsalivia23 you need to share this information if you have this knowledge. Be the voice that others need to hear when you have something that the people need to know. It's important for you to talk and share, don't question those things that were not expressed by others, but add to the conversation by talking about what you know and things you think others need to understand. Please share this information, I too would like to hear about what you have to say.
itsalivia23 it's a 3 minute video
bellyn reyes I would love to share my opinion to those around me but many of my friends and family do not take me seriously since I'm only a fifteen year old girl. But I'd be happy to share my opinion with you if you'd like to hear
I'm a simple person. I see horses, I click.
its about time you made this. :/
Great video again guys!
And all the Trump voters thought they elected an independent non-corporatist. LOL
Great work on stopping it
Stopping what? Nothing?
Oh I'm glad to see Vox giving this some coverage...AFTER a resolution. Keep them cards close to your chest Vox
Didn't even mention Bernie Sanders!
+Mordecai Epsilon What dose Bernie Sanders have to do with the Dakota pipeline situation?
He is one of most well known protesters of the Pipeline. He has given speeches and helped raise awareness.
Camilo Gonzalez Go do some research and leave a comment with some substance, you troll.
Damn, I engaged with the troll, first mistake, I apologize.
Mordecai Epsilon Well I would like to thank you for answering my question. I was unaware that Bernie Sanders had said or done anything about Dakota pipeline situation. I am not always great at following stories in the news, so I sometime develop holes in my information.
Where had the media coverage been for months?
if you lived a rural area this passed through this is terrible news. would have done wonders for that areas economy
DeansList That makes no sense...
Earthling1984 the amount of jobs the pipeline would create would far exceed the loss of going over a river
It's not about safety. It's about forcibly taking what isn't rightfully yours.
Took you long enough. Not impressed.
It's to simple of a story
Nice mini-doc. Would have been nicer if you guys had given some coverage to this before now. Fair weather friends.
I already knew all of this.
cool
story
bro
Finally a protest worth the media's attention. Oh wait
How can these corporate representatives claim that the extraction and transportation of oil poses no threat to the environment? If only there was an incredibly cheap and plentiful fuel source that produced no air pollution, no water pollution, and only a small amount of solid waste… *cough cough* thorium fission *cough cough*
Hologrampizza HAHAHAHAHA... dear God. That was a good laugh.
Hell yeah!! great work standing rock!! :D
there is a .417% chance that a pipeline will have a rupture in 240 years lol.
Justin Calderon who says it had to rupture if it leaks the water will be poison.
I'm so sorry but I couldn't help it "VICTORY SCREECH!!! 1:25"
do we really need to risk the small grass lands we have left
Good job everyone
well they did not stop it as most of the pipe has been build, the DAPL will just reroute the small section somewhere else
May it take Trump four years and one day to reverse the decision.
....5 minutes is more likely
No now the decision has been made it takes a court challenge to over turn, even something non controversial takes abut a year to go though the courts
jethro035181
He can't. It would take years, even if he improbably manages to keep congress in 2018.
....executive order....it has the force of law
jethro035181
it has the force of law only in limited area, and not in contradiction to laws passed by congress. The process involved in this type of dispute is covered by an existing law, Executive order can not over turn it.
i dont think people fully realized what outcome voting for a business man as President could potentially have
It's not the end of the fight at all, this is simply a way for obama to say he tried to stop it. The trump administration is just going to push it through
Did any of you see that protester woman whose arm got horribly mutilated by a grenade or something? You could see right to her bone, I'm glad these sacrifices were not for nothing.
way to go standing rock!!!
Finally a video on this!!
whats to prevent them from just building it a couple of miles down stream? are they really going to uproot entire sections of the pipeline?
is it at all possible just to finnish the pipe line around the sacred ground or something.
Thomas Matteo
Cost way too much.
LOL. We have 2.4 million miles of energy pipelines. Yet, we're fine.
Except pipeline is the safest way to transport oil
Ben Bertram Sure is safe it ain't?
And exactly how did this all work out for you?
Then I agree with you, this money should be subsidizing alternative energy instead.
killerfrenchy Why do we need oil and gas? There are better alternatives, and that is why oil pipelines are objectionable.
The better solution would have been to invest in wind or solar farms not an oil pipeline.
are there any videos that aren't pro native American on this topic?
No, since liberals are for protecting minorities and conservatives are against eminent domain. Only corporate greed pushed it this far as nobody like you and I support it.
Build a bridge over the water so the pipe doesn't touch the water and a net to catch leaks and send them away from the river.
the pipe line will be put in place and everyone will forget about it .
can't go a day without hearing about the pumpkin man
