While I realize that comparing Israeli settlements in the West Bank to US Suburbs is meant to normalize them, for me and probably other viewers, it's also an indictment of the suburbs, in the context of their broader historical, socio-economic, racial, and political dimensions. I want to point out that the way Israel uses subsidies and public infrastructure to encourage less-affluent settlers to move there, is also very reminiscent of how the US government used policy to favor settler-colonial projects, such as the Homestead Act and other land subsidies in our country's expanding Western frontiers during the 1800's. All while the indigenous peoples of those lands got herded into reservations, or killed when they resisted their dispossession.
Israelis remain indigenous to the land more than the Arabs so using the word indigenous while wrongly referring to a group of people who are not actually indigenous is a fallacy
@@GrandImmortalIf being indigenous doesn't expire after 2000 years then any genetic decendants of the amalekites and moabites have a better claim to the land than Israel. If an Italian finds a nice part of France and builds a nice house there, does it become part of Italy? Afterwards saying that it's ok because it used to be part of the Roman empire?
Exactly, so just like the modern day Italians don't claim that all the parts under the former Roman Empire qualify as "their land", Palestinians should also accept that this is not "their land". Land keeps changing owners over the course of history. New countries are born over old. Oh wait, Palestine was never a country in the first place. Just a region ruled by one major empire after another.
@Hey yo Palestinians are the real descendants of Hebrews and Canaanites who mixed with Arabs and Crusaders. They've just been Arabized as have everyone in the Levant. Those coins are our history, not yours.
@Hey yo It used to be Jewish, yes. But it is no longer. Imagine this scenario: you happen to live in a house that was once stolen 100 years ago. You do not approve of that, but, still, it is the only house that you own. Then the grandchildren of the man who stole that house break in and tell them to leave your house and pass its possession to them, offering you no new house in return. Would you listen? If not, your argument that Israel was once a Jewish land isn't a strong one. Sure, Israel is a country and deserves to be one. But the same applies to Palestine. I know that Palestinians don't have as much history as the Jews, nor are they a distinct people or cultural or ethnic group like the Jews are, but that doesn't mean that they don't deserve to live in their own homes. Look, if peace is eventually found, Israel itself will benefit from vast wealth, reduced tensions, much higher security and, duh, peace, and, consequently, a higher standard of living. In this case, we will also finally be able to grant full focus to contributing to actual progress as a species and moving the world as a whole forward, instead of focusing on petty land disputes and useless (on the global scale) military. Without war, we will also most likely grow, at worst, into one of the most advanced, innovative, and prosperous nations in the world and, at best, into the single most advanced nation on the planet. So even making compromises such as giving up land will more than pay off in the long run. Please think big rather thinking locally.
Article 49 of the Fourth Geneva Convention states: “The Occupying Power shall not deport or transfer parts of its own civilian population into the territory it occupies.” It also prohibits the “individual or mass forcible transfers, as well as deportations of protected persons from occupied territories" Israel is making it more difficult for Palestinians to form their own country. At the same time they also do not want to give Palestinians in West Bank equal voting rights because they are still outnumbered. Stop the settlements, let Palestinians have their state and freedom.

A couple of weeks ago I took a virtual tour with 3 Palestinian olive growers who live in Gaza, but their groves have been in their families for hundreds of years. They are supposed to be allowed in to their trees to care for them and to harvest olives. Unfortunately, the settlements have built fences with locked gates & someone is supposed to be there at designated times to unlock the gates. They don't always show up and thus the farmers cannot harvest their olives. This settlement has no sewer system so sewage from this settlement just free flows down into the olive groves and the farmers can't get in. Teens from the settlements hassle the farmers and I found it to be eye opening. My grandfather from Jerusalem used to be friends with Palestinians and he would help them harvest and in turn they allowed him to take a share of olives to press for his family. Those days are long gone. I am sure not everyone behaves the way the settlers in this settlement do, but things are not easy or good for Gaza's olive farmers.

Dr Guillotin You understand the rules of war have changed over time right. Just as in 1918 we started (and in 1945 mostly finished with) ending the idea of ‘might makes right’ we have abolished numerous spoils of war, when you conquer a city you no longer get to take half the women as prizes for soldier and 2/3rds of the men as slaves, we bind ourselves in law to protect us and human civilisation from destroying ourselves. Humanity evolved over time, in the modern world, the fact the Israeli military is able to occupy the land doesn’t give the Isreali state the right to govern it, not the Isreali citizenry the right to extract it. If you want other examples, frances occupation of northern Mali on behalf of Mali doesn’t give France the right to extract taxes, apply laws, or settle the desert. British occupation in Afghanistan doesn’t give Britain the legal right to govern the mountains.

Yusuf Celenli If Palestinians are living in tents and refugee camps, they must blame their leaders. In 2000, Palestinians were offered 97 % of the West Bank, Arafat turned it down. So what is Israel supposed to do. Palestinians want everything on a platter. You cannot have things on a platter, you have to make compromises. I personally think the two state solution is dead. The olive harvest in the West Bank takes place under a constant Israeli land grab, restrictions on access to the plots, settlers attacks on harvesters, and vandalisation of olive trees. Kufr Qaddum is a Palestinian town in the northern West Bank. Its olive groves are located beside the large settlement Kedumim, which was illegally built on Kufr Qaddum’s land. It takes 2 months for the village to harvest its olives. In 2019 the Israeli army gave them a permit for 8 days. Untended trees yield poorer crops, if they can be picked at all. The settlement of Kedumim uses surveillance cameras to monitor the Palestinian land. If the settlers see the farmers working, they will either arrive there to threaten them, or ask the army to come and turn the farmers away from their land. Over one million Palestinian olive trees have been uprooted or burned by Israeli authorities and settlers since 1967.
I demand justice also for the million Jews who were thrown out of their homes in Arab lands and that Israel absorbed. Who will repay them for everything they lost.
his analogy isnt perfect because, we already negotiated over the pizza. UN partitioned the land, the palestinians refused their share, they attacked and lost the war. a better analogy would be, one pizza split between two guys and the greedy one attacked the other and lost parts of his pizza in the process.
i think you got that wrong, in 1948 2 guys were negotiating over a pizza, so UN came and split it in half, but side #1 (Palestinians) attacked side #2 (Israelis) for the Israeli half, but then they lost the war and their half of the pizza... now tell me, giving back to the Palestinians their half of pizza for nothing will just bring us back to the beginning, so Israel wants it like this: "we will give you your half, but you leave us alone". so far the Palestinians declined, so...
of course the Arab rejects the idea of splitting the pizza in half, because the person requesting to share the pizza is just a small boy, descendants of former owner of the house 2000 years ago. A third is more than enough. the boy insists on his own half pizza share, when he can just stay together in Arab house, enjoying the pizza and life together peacefully.

@@jackkessler9876 Okay dokey, it's all just Muslim Intolerance. So Israeli tolerance and fairness would give citizenship to all legal residents of their territories, right? And not just those that are of the confirmed national faith so that Judaism can retain its place as the center of Israel's legal, governmental and cultural affairs? Fact is, if the population of Gaza, the West Bank, and the Palestinian refugees were allowed to come home and become normal citizens, 'Israel' as a concept would cease to exist and the 'Israelis' would be a minority population again. This isn't about Muslim Intolerance; Israel is a country of people who felt an unjust boot on their necks for centuries (i.e. the CHRISTIAN nations of the world primarily) and now feel entitled to put their own boot on someone else's neck to make sure it isn't done to them again. They have gone from victims to oppressors, tragedy made circular.

"These whole peace talks are like two guys who are negotiating over a pizza, while one of them is eating the pizza" A very strong quote which would be funny, if it wasn't so painfully pointing out how the Israeli government is putting on a charade for the world. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for the existence of the state of Israel, but I'm also for a livable situation for the Palestinians. And as this short documentary shows; an own state for the Palestinians is getting further away of becoming a reality with every Jewish settlement that is being allowed to be built by the State of Israel, even though they say they still want peace and are working towards a possible two state solution.
The Arabs never had a state on Jewish soil, so why should they have one know. The Algonquin federation in the Americas was more more of a state than the Arabs ever had in so-called "Palestine."
I understand your argument, but I think it's at a total different wavelength from my statement. What I'm saying is, is that Israel officially still says they are working towards a two state solution, which doesn't have anything to do with whether or not the Palestinians ever had a state in the past - that's a total different discussion. The point is, is that Israel SAYS they want a two state solution, but their actions show the contrary. And that makes the quote so spot on: Officially they are still negotiating over the country (the pizza), but in the mean time, Israel is just taking it anyway. Which makes negotiations pointless. Again, I get your argument, but my statement was based on the stance the state of Israel has expressed internationally concerning a solution for the dispute with the Palestinians.
The "two state DELUSION" as I call it, began way back in the 1930s. The Jewish socialists grabbed control of zionism early in the 20th century since so many were from Russia. Many of the early Russian Jewish socialists and communists thught they could build a "worker's paradise" together with the Arabs in "Palestine." When marxism comes true (like when the messiah comes) all workers will arise and all differences, religius, ethnic, racial will disappear, like as if withi the second comingof Jesus. In 1922 the League of Nations awarded Palestine to the Jews, bu tthe Jews were only 8% of the population. Most Arabs were not interested in allowing Jews to come in and settle despite the zioniists telling them that eventually everyone will live in kumbaya. When the Arabs began to rebel in the 1930s, the Peel Commission offered the idea of another partition of "Palestine" where Jews would only get the 10% of that they had bought. But the Arabs would not even accept 10% going to the Jews. But you know leftists, they never give up their delusions regardless of all facts to the contrary. Many are still Marxists!
Okay, I give up. You clearly don't want to understand what I'm trying to say and instead want to spread a standpoint that has been repeated over and over without it contributing to a solution to the problem. I get where you come from, I really do, it's just not constructive.
"Ideological motivations are far down the line..." This piece is a excellent mirror for most "first world" communities. We are innocent of our collective action and their implications by claiming a right to a way of life which by its underlying ideology deprives others of it. Heck, that map of Israel might as well be US cities in the 50s when the freeway system surrounded and cut through predominantly poor black communities, and today are again being pushed out by gentrification. Like the Arabs of the West Bank and Gaza Strip, they were squeezed there by restrictive laws and tacit social agreements of an oppressor claiming self defense and the carrying on the burden of civilization and all its necessities: education, commerce, and most importantly the use of violence, of course keeping it in the hands of the chosen. The ideological motivations that are far down the line root themselves in the belief that only a certain chosen can carry on that burden of civilization which leads to certain conflict and injustice, in many ways corrupting all other ideology or motivation. It is incompatible with democracy. Either we are all chosen, or none of us are.
I don't think that you can equate the situation there with the US-American conflict of "races". It is a huge misunderstanding many Americans tend to make. Almost all conflicts in Europe and the Middle East are based on religion, ethnicity, economic differences or culture, rarely on the colour of skin, or as you put it, "race".

@Zoltan Harangozo its ironic because modern 'Israelis' are all decend from europe and not the middle east. Do you think that israel was just empty and before the Jews no one knew let alone lived in the area? So if I would argue that Egyptians had concurred this place from the assyrians before the jews came would you agree that syrians/Egyptians should own israel because they were there before the jews came.
Wow you guys got so much of that wrong. It is traditionally believed that the Israelites were exiled from the land of Israel 2000 years ago by the romans. During the Middle Ages, the Jews were naturally divided to two groups - Ashkenazi Jews and Sephardic (or Mizrachi) Jews. The Ashkenazi Jews are the ones who migrated to eastern and central Europe, while the Sephardic Jews are the ones who migrated to the Iberian peninsula, from which they were exiled as well in 1492, and then migrated mainly to North Africa and the Middle East. In the late 1800s, Zionism - the nationalist Jewish movement - emerged in Europe. Theodor Herzl took great diplomatic, organizational and physical action to bring the Jews from over the world together and get a charter of an establishment of a Jewish state in the then-Ottoman ruled Land of Israel (aka Palestine), while supporting Jewish settlement in the region, which started in 1882. After WW1, the British took hold of Palestine, which was by then settled by both Arabs and Jews, and in 1947 the British declared than on May 15, 1948 they will live Palestine and let the UN decide what’s going to happen next. After a months-long inspection of the area lead by UNSCOP - the UN special committee on Palestine, the UN general assembly voted in favor of a resolution that stated that 45% of land will make a Palestinian state, the other 55% will make a Jewish state and Jerusalem will be an international territory controlled by the UN. While the Jews were happy with this offer, the Palestinians rejected it and started a war on the Jews. Mid-war, the Israeli state was declared on May 14, 1948, and the rest is history...

It feels a bit unfair ( more than a little bit). It feels a lot like bullying. It's like- "We are gonna build in such a way so that should these people be able to have a stand one day, there won't be anywhere to put it." 😔
When you realize the reason settler's could do this in the first place was because Israel rightfully captured the land following a war which was incited by Palestinians, what seems unfair is that Palestine didn't just accept the UN partition plan/avoid inciting wars over the years because if they did they would have saved thousands of Palestinian lives. Instead, they were too focused on eradicating Israel because they selfishly wanted an Arab only state. The way they are currently treated is incredibly unfair, especially because their ancestors who refused to make peace caused this, but it is also reasonable to understand that Israel was provoked over the years and can't really compromise with people who refuse to share.
@@AlexG-oo8kt This is the way I see it. When people call Israel the oppressor it’s a shame because it makes it sound like a simple relationship between a bully and a victim. Of course there’s more layers to it than that though. Palestinian civilians are definitely victims, but not because Israel wants them to suffer. Palestinians are the victims to the choices of their own authorities. If Palestinian leaders were initially interested in working with Israel then that is what would have happened.

Penny Lane Go find the series "Dont tell my mother...", granted it was a few years old but it was produced for National Geographic. The non-zionist Jew guy got verbally abused (by other Jews) in front of the camera. No bias there. Also in that particular episode, the host goes to show both sides of the fence. From the Jews viewpoint and from the Palestine POV. He literally went to West Bank and interview people there. I think he went to Gaza strip too.
If I were a Palestinian I’d want to live in one of these beautiful communities. This reminds me of all the redlining that happened in the US where Blacks weren’t allowed to move into certain neighborhoods. But this is on a whole different level obviously due to actual physical barriers preventing any Palestinian from ever moving in and having a Jewish neighbor. I’m also reminded of what happened to the native Americans here in the US during westward expansion. All the “Indian Wars.” History repeats itself.
Article 49 of the Fourth Geneva Convention states: “The Occupying Power shall not deport or transfer parts of its own civilian population into the territory it occupies.” It also prohibits the “individual or mass forcible transfers, as well as deportations of protected persons from occupied territories"
Israel is making it more difficult for Palestinians to form their own country.

You understand the rules of war have changed over time right.

“Tansik” تنسيق means coordination in Arabic. All the olive harvest in those parts of the Palestinian West Bank under Israeli military control requires coordination (Tansik) with the Israeli army. The real purpose of the “coordination” is to disrupt and damage the harvest.
Over one million Palestinian olive trees have been uprooted or burned by Israeli authorities and settlers since 1967.

his analogy isnt perfect because, we already negotiated over the pizza.

"These whole peace talks are like two guys who are negotiating over a pizza, while one of them is eating the pizza"
A very strong quote which would be funny, if it wasn't so painfully pointing out how the Israeli government is putting on a charade for the world.
No, its 46 guys saying the Jewish guy has no right to even the smallest crumb from the pizza.

"Ideological motivations are far down the line..."
This piece is a excellent mirror for most "first world" communities.

It's like- "We are gonna build in such a way so that should these people be able to have a stand one day, there won't be anywhere to put it." 😔
so maddening
