My notes on optimizing T: - Good sleep - See the sunlight in the morning for 2-10 minutes b/c it increases dopamine + T & E - Cold exposure (cold water swimming, cold shower, etc) - Excercise (e.g. weight training heavy loads but not to failure) increases T for 48 hours. Intense endurance activity first before weight training decreases T because it increases cortisol. - Nutregens - Zinc, vitamin D(3) and magnesium - Creatine can increase DHT which increase T receptors - Creatine can increase DHT which increase T receptors

I worked in a pathology lab during my late teens and wasn’t afraid of needles. I used to draw my blood often and test my hormones largely just because I was interested. I noticed a large jump in both test and free test whenever I would get very cold. This was back in 2001. I’ve never worn a jacket since. People think I’m crazy, but let’s be honest you aren’t going to freeze to death. It would also jump from tanning. Whenever my skin is dark, everything is higher. I always slept well and avoided alcohol. Also, spinach in particular. I would blend it in a shake every morning. When I would get lazy or ran out, I could see a difference. My arms are still viably scared from all the tests I ran lol. In my thirties my test dropped about 10% and an additional drop in my 40s. Stay away from alcohol, anytime I drank it would drop. Cortisol would rise as well as CRP.
@@jonlee6114 the test is fairly simple and requires very little serum. If you are truly interested go work in a hematology or pathology lab in a hospital. They will usually train you, pay sucks, but you are the one doing the tests. You could test yourself every hour if you want.

@@hubermanlab Huge fan of your podcast! Thank you so much for sharing such valuable information! Question: Do you always cook food for Costello or do you also give him dog food?
@@algirdasjasaitis352 Costello eats kibble, meat and butter. He LOVES butter. He is lean and lazy. It works for us. I skip the kibble and yes I do eat veggies, carbs etc.
I agree, he is a great educator. It is obvious that a lot of the information he explains has been practiced in lectures for many years It reflect the most common questions, and apply to a diverse range of learning capacities, and ways to receive and process information.
All the suffering and stress I've been expriencing and I've considered too much for me, I realized there are reasons why I felt in a certain ways that I suffered a lot and actually there are things I can do about it. Appreciate great teacher I've never met. Thank you.
Thank you, this is awesome information. I am a post-menopausal woman, so my estrogen level has dropped. I'm interested in hearing more about the relationship between cholesterol and hormones, and the way STATIN drugs inhibit hormones in the liver. My doctor will not prescribe any estrogen replacement therapy if my LDL count is high, regardless of the HDL level. I am also an Opera Singer, so I depend and appreciate the estrogen in the lipids to keep my voice and skin supple and flexible (which is usually the point to HRTherapy for women, not hot flashes.) My sinuses and breathing are in really good shape (as you pointed out in this podcast) because the unique structure of (each person's) sinuses act as the sounding board to focus and project a bright, complex, and cutting sound which carries above an orchestra. The sound is found and developed by training and practice, along with developing the tiny throat muscles, rib and back muscles, and lungs. The muscle control and flexibility obviously reduce with age somewhat as the estrogen level, stored in the fat cells, decreases. But do they have to? My questions are, how much estrogen is stored or produced in the fat cells, and would that be a burden on the liver in an older woman? Is it a trade-off, to not lose too much fat weight to keep skin and cartilage supple, soft, and flexible, or to become much thinner so as to not overtax the liver? If not the ovaries, where else can an older woman keep up her estrogen levels to save her skin texture?
For those who are new to this podcast, I highly recommend also checking out the previous episodes as they are well-worth the investment of time. I found the series on sleep especially beneficial - the protocols work well for me as long as I follow them consistently. Much gratitude to the Huberman Lab team as always!
Agreed with the sleep episodes! Huberman's the only professor/researcher who doesn't scare me about sleep, so I feel less anxious about early morning wake ups. It's helped so much that I can sleep longer now, and the occasional wake ups no longer last for hours

As a urologist and a testicular cancer survivor, I can only say I implemented all the lifestyle changes and supplementation that Andrew recommended to keep my testosterone level balanced - and I’m feeling much better and my testosterone level is within normal range. All double checked by me (empirically and by going through the data) and my andrologist ! Thank you and keep up the great GREAT work Andrew!
Hey man, how old are you? Also, I’m in the process of getting checked for testicular cancer out of concerns as a 29 year old. How did you survive the cancer? Did you go through chemo?
Hi guys so I’m 32. I had an orchiectomy (testicle removal). And yes, you can live a normal life after that. No, I did not have chemo, just strict active surveillance as it was my second cancer by 30 (I had sarcoma at 25). I take omega-3, vit d, tongkat ali, ashwaganda. I skip fadogia as it works in a similar manner to LH, and my pituitary is already pumping a lot of LH for my single testicle to keep up with testosterone production. P.S. Testosterone now in the upper limits 😊 Check your bloodwork!

It's incredible indeed. Biology holds so many secrets. Once they become clear it seems simple but the depth of mechanism is so vast. Still so much to discover.
@@hubermanlabQuestion...If sleep apnea causes a drop in testosterone and estrogen due to increased carbon dioxide levels, could wearing tight masks for 10 hrs/day also affect testosterone levels by inadvertently inhaling higher levels levels of CO2 that you just exhaled? (My question is strictly from a biological standpoint/curiosity, and has nothing to do with whatever "mask debates" that tend circulate in a political fashion.)
In the section 00:34:18 Pheromones...If anyone wants to know, the correct pronunciation of Sommelier is "suh-muhl-yei" ("yay" at the end) for English pronunciation and "soh-muh-lee-ey" for French pronunciation. In French, the word literally means "butler," and it's been used since the 19th century to mean "wine steward" or "wine waiter" at the restaurant.

Focusing on healthy fats/lower carb/higher protein. Along with intermittent fasting. Taking cold baths, plus icing the balls 2-3x for 20min daily. I’ve always consistently worked out and don’t plan on stopping. Wish me luck!
Could taking the supplement Pueraria Mirifica increase cancer risk in a menopausal/post-menopausal woman? If it's as potent as Estrogen therapy, I'm concerned about it also increasing the cancer risk. I recently starting taking it, but now am considering eliminating it. I asked my gynecologist and she had never heard of it and had no idea. Her answer was basically, "I don't know; if it seems to help (hot flashes) keep taking it." Thank you so much for breaking down all of this interesting information! It's amazing to me that women are taught virtually nothing about menopause, so these conversations are so helpful. this is a good episode for me. i've spent this last year or so trying to figure out my health problems. turns out sleep apnea, body weight, and thus low testosterone were at the forefront. fixed two of those and increased my testosterone by 400% and life has done a complete 180 for me. and i was able to do it without TST injections, at least for now. which is a plus. now i'm working on the body weight part, and it's going really well. Please know that this comment is motivated only by wanting to help you make the podcast as accessible as possible, to reach as many people as possible, to help them be receptive to the information and incorporate it into their own lives in whatever way they need. I really wish you wouldn’t refer to Yoga and other wellness related practices as “new-agey.” Speaking as someone from the yoga community, I try not to get offended, but every time you say it I sigh deeply. You once said that you were trying to bridge the gap between science and these practices, and last episode I believe when talking about the NSDR protocols from Made For you touched on a very relevant issue: that the language of practices like yoga and meditation can be off-putting to some people and so unfamiliar that it dissuades them from ever trying the practices. I agree with you 100% that it’s a major issue, and in response many teachers are taking steps to making the language and the concepts more mainstream and relatable for people. The term “new agey” has its own negative connotation. I’m imaging the episode of Seinfeld when George goes to some wellness guru who spits in his face and says “you’re eating too much dairy.” Referring to these practices as “new- agey” can make them sound hokey or even unsubstantiated when in actuality, as your own podcast is proving, they are anything but. I would say they’re more ancient than new age, and only now is science catching up to all the stuff that our community has been talking about for hundreds if not thousands of years. We had the tools but like you said we were often lacking the mechanism or understanding of why the things that we do are helping. Personally I am thrilled to have someone like you explain the why and validate the benefits of many of the tools that we in the yoga world employ (i.e. becoming more in tune with your own body and level of autonomic arousal, blurring the gaze, exhale emphasized breathing, nasal breathing, salutogenisis - my new favourite term) so that we as teachers can share that science backed info with members and non-members of the community and hopefully make the practice a little more relatable and digestible for people. Our goals are the same - get the info out, help people feel and function better so please please try not to use the term new agey... all it’s going to do is possibly offend people who work in the field and make them less receptive the podcast, and / or continue to dissuade other people from trying something that could really benefit them. Again I say this all with tremendous respect and appreciation for you and this podcast. with love and gratitude 🙏🏻

Note for those intending to use 1:23:11 ish info (weight training followed by endurance training for testosterone increase), It's been noted that endurance training following weight training also reduces hypertrophy, so for those of you planning to bulk which is what's leading testosterone to be your focus, this may not be the move.
Thank you for this content Dr. Huberman and team! :) I find myself feeling confused or torn when it comes to optimizing/increasing specific hormones, partly because of the understanding that we thrive on an environment of balance and the possibility of increasing the likelihood of specific cancers when altering that balance, but also because of the challenge of having thorough hormone testing done for females that test throughout the whole of the cycle in order to know what you might want/need to adjust according to your baseline (I dream of a day when at home real-time testing for deficiencies and toxicity functionally exists for all purposes of health and healing). I would love to hear from you about "adaptogens" and quality scientific studies, if they exist, on the possibility of using them as tools to encourage balance/homeostasis rather than increasing or decreasing specific hormones.

The way you break down scientific information to the general public is just outstanding
Thank you so much.

I really wish you wouldn’t refer to Yoga and other wellness related practices as “new-agey.”
Speaking as someone from the yoga community, I try not to get offended, but every time you say it I sigh deeply.
I’m imaging the episode of Seinfeld when George goes to some wellness guru who spits in his face and says “you’re eating too much dairy.”
Referring to these practices as “new- agey” can make them sound hokey or even unsubstantiated when in actuality, as your own podcast is proving, they are anything but.

I find myself feeling confused or torn when it comes to optimizing/increasing specific hormones, partly because of the understanding that we thrive on an environment of balance and the possibility of increasing the likelihood of specific cancers when altering that balance, but also because of the challenge of having thorough hormone testing done for females that test throughout the whole of the cycle in order to know what you might want/need to adjust according to your baseline (I dream of a day when at home real-time testing for deficiencies and toxicity functionally exists for all purposes of health and healing).

Would love to hear the scientific truth of what the implications Truely are. I've read it can increase SHBG levels -> like what does this do over years of use... Thanks for all the great content!
I really like the way you link connect us with animal world, while the science of pheromones sometimes tend to be applied to the animals only (because we are meant to be something quite different). it is good that you see us just where we originally belong.
Dr. Huberman Spanish translation subtitles is excellent. Spreading your valuable information.
I am glad you and Costello are fine 🙌🏻
