Of course they are - the game gives you many info on that - the aldorman gives them ears. This is symbolism that they hear everything. They can control animals and monsters - so they have eyes on the place. And their influence extends to everyone. Even children. They are very well crafted.
The writing in this quest, from the Baron to Anna and to the Crones, this is CDPR at its best. And accompanied by this soundtrack, that's what makes a masterpiece.
There was so much room for more in Witcher 3,but one can only dream that the next gen maybe brings another DLC to the table,would love that as I'm an old player,we need moar before witcher 4 no doubt ! But yeah these questlines are really peak of story lines in general.

Like witches who eat kids is a silly european folklore kid story usually, but Witcher 3 takes those folk stories and fits them seemlessly into an immersive world and doesnt shy away from the gross and disturbing at all which makes it very captivating and sometimes terrifying. So many games try to be scary and disturbing and utterly fall flat. Gaunter O'Dimm is another example.
Witches were indeed eating children. Those are the echoes of old legends that in Germany have faded into children tales. But this was a historic fact. Also, various other types of cannibalism were once present through Europe. Like eating the heart of the enemy one has killed in battle. It was put to end by gradual rise of religions which banned cannibalism. It is not just Christianity, Greek god Zeus is specifically cited to not allow it.

Gaunter O' Dimm effed me up by the end. I knew the guy was something from the start and was waiting for it all to unveil. He wasn't even as brutal in the game as Olgierd was shown to be, but that spoon in the eye - absolute shivers, then the visit to the professor of occultism and his death so expected yet so sudden. Honestly when that questline started in Olgierd's house I wasn't expecting such a compelling villain (I got way too annoyed with everyone but it makes perfect sense by the end). Literally perfect game
Most interesting part is that.. Even the they arent completely one-sidedly evil. Despite being so obviously evil, they help the villagers immensely. One could easily make the argument that villagers on Velen are alive because of them.
Gaunter o'dimm is the only character that scared me for real its concept is far more superior as a villain to all the other villains of any game because its concept is what a real devil is ...and the character is inspired by the concepts across cultures chosen wisley to create him ladies of the woods are also a phenomenal reitiration of the papa yaga creating a more cohesive storyline
Even Geralt wasn't too keen on taking them on and he knew that their powers were far greater than anything he could throw against them. Ciri took on two, but only because of her insane abilities which make Geralt's signs look like party tricks for children.
Thats the thing for Geralt. Defeating "things" even far more powerful than him. Thats his speciality and he's good at it. He can defeat the crones and he would've taken them on if they wouldn't have ran away. So imo they weren't keen on taking Geralt on.
Some of the pieces from the Witcher games are just perfect for Halloween, which is the Celtic festival of Samhain if you trace it back far enough. The time when the boundaries between our world and the spirit world of the dead are at their weakest, right at the beginning of winter.
Something to note is that several pagan traditions held celebrations to the spirits during that time of the year. The Celts had Samhain, in Poland we had Dziady (or Forefather's Eve), in Japan there are the Ognissanti celebrations... its interesting how different people's have come up with similar concepts.

Through your entire stay in Velen, you can kind of sense there is something deeply wrong and disturbing with this place. First you think it is the war or the poverty or even the Bloody Baron, but them you finallly meet the ladies and them you know.
You know, some people complain that the ladies of the woods are basically just reskinned hags, but I think it's incredibly fitting. Witchers are monster hunters who make a science out of studying monster archetypes. If every single monster was that unique, that science wouldn't work. Ultimately, everything you fight, regardless of how menacing it is, regardless of how powerful, is just an upscaled or downscaled version of other monsters of that genome. Similarly to how if you hunt humans, the only thing that'll change is the size and combat experience -- you're not fighting an entirely new species from human to human, you're still hunting the same thing. The fact that the crones are just reskinned hags may be because that's what they are. They're hags with magic and different body types.
After all they were supposed to resemble Baba Yaga from Slavic folklore. That's how they are described and it's smh that a lot of people were complaining about their appearance

The first time you meet them in the flesh and this music is going on. That forever burned into my mind as one of the most epic rpg moments of gaming. You just cannot fathom what you see in front of you. The bugs, the clothing, the movement and gestures...Horrifying.

I wish the vocals at the end were equal to or louder than the instruments at the end there!! I've been HUNGRY for female growl singing that actually hits that primal shout in an aggressively beautiful way and the end of this is pretry much all I could find, but I can't hear it well. Even so, I skip to the end and strain to hear those beautifully haunting screams almost every day just to scratch that itch in my soul 🥰

What I found so interesting, is that in PRIVATE they look beautiful, just like their painting. It really makes you think, is the horror actually the illusion? Why only be beautiful in private, most others would do the opposite.
Crones are like a metaphor of modern dating scene. Although their looks is much different than what they show in the picture the real horror begins when you start to unravel mysteries like their eating habits, body count, and their true nature they're desperately trying to hide.
