I was worried about retiring in a couple years. But, after watching Hobo Shoestring's videos. I have hope. I plan to spend time on the road seeing this country. I want to go camping and gold panning in Alaska. Hobo Shoestring's videos are a light at the end of the tunnel for me. RIP Mark 🫡🚂🚃🚃🚃🚃
Hey shoestring, you made a video on how you got your name, I listened to that song, that’s a pretty good song man. So I posted a link for the song Hope you don’t mind. I also sent you another message, don’t know if you’ll see it but if you ever get back to Worcester mass, please comment on this thread I’d love to meet up with you to donate a nice US Army ruck pack for some of your gear if that’s something you could use. And like I said on the last comment, thank you for your service to our country. I’d love to donate a brand new US Army pack to you for your gear if needed, let me know next time you’re near Worcester Mass.
This is my first ever trip to Alaska, who would have ever thought my first Alaska trip would be guided by a real live veteran Hobo named Shoestring!?!? Life don't get any better than this! Thanks for taking us all with you Mark!
Shoestring, I love trains and would have loved to spend my life as a HoBo. However, much like you, i joined the military and after 36 years, well I am in debt, have a small farm and looking to enjoy whatever life I have left. If you ever get down to the northen Alabama area and need a shower, a place to rest up or some hot chow. Let me know, I got your six! When I was in my teens, it was very common for my friends and I to hop trains and ride to the next town. We weren't really worried about getting caught, my moms cousin was in charge of the local yard so I was able to get away with it. A lot of my family lived along the only tracks, so it was an easy way to get home after football practice, go to my Aunts or Grandmas house. Very unique set of circumstances that allowed me to ride trains in my teens. i was lucky enought to spend a lot of Saturdays, just hanging out in the yard, throwing switches, working with the conductors coupling and every once in a while, was even allowed to ride in the Locomotive, usually when it was raining or snowing. I was going to ask you, to provide a set of videos, that talk about all of the safety precautions you take while traveling. We all know that riding trains is a crime, however, I am sure, that there are still a few deaths every year because people don't have the experience that you do. As your travels may inspire others to try and do the same. I think it would be benefitial to talk about how dangerous it is and the safety steps you take both on and off the trains. Stay Safe
That which doesn’t kill you, makes you stronger. Except Bears. Bears will definitely mess you up. 😄 God Bless you Shoestring and that Hobo thing you do. We love you!!!
I have no desire to watch any other hobo videos except for shoestring and Stobe. They just talk to us in a simple manner that we all just admire. Aloha from Hawaii.
Long years ago at the Boy Scout camp in Eley Minnesota 5 kids 4 of us adults Scout leader found out I had peppermint in the tent , he had a meltdown 😊. Land of 1000 lakes. No bears. We canoed about 75/100 miles that week. Stay safe. God and I we love you
Shoestring, you are such an intelligent man. I hope many people tune into your videos. You could be a history teacher. Oh wait you already are one. Have a safe nite, you arent to far from my cabin, here in whittier. I personally fear the moose more than bear. God bless.
That’s the time of year I loved working up on the slope!! You’d also see people fishing at 10 pm driving from Anchorage down to Girdwood. Enjoy and be safe!!
If you're in bear country have a gallon can of railroad gravel handy. When shaken, it makes an extremely loud noise. Bears take off not knowing what the hell it is.
Man shoestring you are definitely a Man Living his own life and seeing the world. How you have gone from Worcester Mass to Alaska in short time is Fascinating to me. Love Old Glory Traveling with you also. Peace and Be Safe Brother. Andy M
You explained it really well. I didn’t realize that it didn’t rise to zenith! Re: bears in Michigan & Virginia (black bears) we usually put all our food up a tree. Love the giant grass over your tent when you put the camera on the ground 😎
Bears seem to find any food. So, I hope you have a way of isolating your supplies. Biers always find my backpack for some reason. (you know, bier is German word for beer)
Alaska is a west coast maritime climate, like the UK. Least ways that was what we learned in geography back in the 60's when I was at school. That makes for some "changeable" weather. We (UK) just had a heat wave in May, sunniest May on record. Now it's overcast and showers 18C. Does southern Alaska do the same in summer? Amazing views fella. Ta.
Great travels. Your past video to show your home base with all the train pictures (curtains) was unique. Shoestring, you've gotten more mileage out of your army pack than I have in the military! Enjoy your Summer in Alaska, my friend. Best regards with the arm. Thanks for the hike along. Living life on your terms! Keith
What's up shoestring man I'm glad to see you having fun darn I sure wish I could do that but I got to know lady that ain't going to let me leave her sight anyway I'm fixing to put one in the air for you buddy thanks for all your videos can't wait to see the next one the old lady tells me that you're awesome trying to make me jealous hahaha
Can you use the bucket as a beer box and keep it at least 50 yards from your tent. I would not keep any food in your tent not even toiletries deodorant shampoo toothpaste . Some people go as far as dont sleep in the cloths you cook in. I have been in bear country lots. I would sure love to go to Alaska. Be safe out there my Brother.
YOU ARE AWESOME AND DESERVE TO ENJOY YOUR TIME WITH NATURE BE CAREFUL WITH THE BEARS. HAVE A FLASHLIGHT AND YOUR BEAR SPRAY. ENJOY YOUR TIME HAVE A GREAT DAY JIM KAMMERER OF PHILADELPHIA PA THANK YOU FOR YOUR VIDEO AND YOUR INFORMATION AND THOUGHTS. 👍😁
Saw ya use 100% deet bug juice. Keep the cap real tight, I found out the hard way that a little leak melted and gummied up plastic and rubber stuff in my pack. Great choice, I’m in northern Maine and it’s black fly and skeeter season. Sure is a nice place to camp ya found.
Hi Shoestring, Sometimes i think i'd rather have a 'Bear' come calling than a human. That area looks fairly safe, you'll do just fine. You probably know that Alaskan Wilderness as good, if not better than, them Bears, Wolves. I got faith in your woods manship. If i had a choice of who i would go with as a, it be you Shoestring. Stay safe, rest up waiting on a another video as..Take Care buddy.
Shoestring, I camp in the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia which has a high bear population. If you take some rope and tie to to the bucket, you can throw the rope over a branch on a tree strong enough to support it but not strong enough for a bear. Hoist the food up there and tie it off and the bears won't get it.
Hey bud , I ordered ya a tripod for your phone. I completely spaced out while ordering it and clicked on send it to my address on Amazon rather than putting in yours. 🤦♂️ I’ve got it here though in Silverdale Washington and will be sending out to ya. Since you’re out in the wild it’ll give me extra time and hopefully find a good gimbal that will help with stabilizing your shots. Also a couple SD cards to help with your storage. When I see you’re heading home or let me know here I’ll send your package out . ( not sure if you’re place is secure enough for a package laying around for too long). Great video once again and stay safe! We only have little ol black bear here in the PNW. Oh and if you’re ever on a train the goes into Seattle or Tacoma it’s an easy drive or ferry trip I can take to reach you. I’d like to take you out to lunch and possibly do a story on you. I’d say get a train into Kitsap County but we only have trains that run between the Navy shipyard and the sub base( Navy Base Kitsap). The navy version of “Bulls” are armed Marines so I doubt you’d want to try that. Lol
The best time to buy camping equipment is in the winter when sales are low and discounts are high. Mt Baldy Trailhead is at 1744 feet, so the transmitter is lower, But there's sure a lot of buildings just for an FM radio station. Might be other agencies who use the area. Now if you can just figure how to pipe that heat exhaust into your tent...
one day id love to hop out with you if you dont mind some company. 31 female. but im quiet usually keep to myself. love nature and whatnot would definetly help out along the way.
Have you ever seen a Sasquatch on your travels? Im in UK but i worked at a Adventure camp in NH one summer. I did canoe camping down connecticut river 10 days at a time. My camp colleague tied a bear bag above my tent one night.....thankfully no bears came looking for food. That was the best summer of my life .
I have a pop up 2 man tent, could be a life saver in Alaska with all the bad weather. Takes a few seconds to put up and stow away.Wouldn't have anything else now after all the faff with others.
Great video as always. You have any plans to catch out on The Alaska RR this trip? Definitely Gods Country up there. My dad grew up in Seldovia and would go up to Homer every year and spend the summer flying float planes transporting tourists back and forth between Homer and a small remote village. If he had it his way he would of stayed up there year round.
No man is an island , but Shoestring 's channel is an island of sanity in a world gone mad.
Pepe, it sure takes us in to a different dimention of sanity we didn't no existed.
Deep inside I’ve always felt this IS the real world. But that’s made me sad all the time in ‘civilization’
@@PatriseHenkel Bad things used to come in"3s" but I've lost counting.

Someone gave me a thumbs down and didn't even have time to watch 10% of the video
That's UA-cam for you. Your ratio of likes to dislikes is always solidly in favor of you.
UA-cam troll.

I have a pop up 2 man tent, could be a life saver in Alaska with all the bad weather. Takes a few seconds to put up and stow away.Wouldn't have anything else now after all the faff with others.
Omg you cracked me up with if a bear comes into the tent you’ll be like a cartoon right thru the wall lol lol
If KASH-FM gives you a problem, tell them you have 20K+ watchers. Hell, they'll probably put you on the radio for an interview!
I’m laughing! They’ll know which bear. Good one
