What’s the Donnie Brasco movie about?
Joseph Pistone (Johnny Depp from Edward Scissorhands, Arizona Dream and Pirates of the Caribbean) is an FBI agent who has infiltrated one of the major New York Mafia families and is living under the name Donnie Brasco. He develops a relationship with mob hit man Benjamin "Lefty" Ruggiero (Al Pacino from The Godfather and Scarface) in order to get deeper under cover, but ends up developing a real friendship with the Mafioso. As their relationship develops, Pistone must decide whether or not to complete his job, knowing that it will lead to the murder of his new friend.

I love the fact they didnt dub over the sounds of their leather jackets against the seats.
It's one of the best things about this film, just like the way Lefty breathes thru his nose, and the scene with the cigarettes in the car, I could almost smell the smoke. This film, to me, is Pacino's best even more than Godfather.
They may've made them louder
That is not the raw sound from the actual filming, almost zero audio from the actual scene is used. They recorded that after the fact to deepen the sound design

They very likely added that in post. Like the sound of the gun hitting his head etc. It's very common to add all the foley sounds afterwards.

Part of the bullshit romanticism of the Mob was they're all loaded and flush with cash. That ain't even close to the truth. Most of them are just muscle guys, enforcers. The minority of them are the real earners.
@@karabinjr That's the point. That's what is so awesome about this movie. It show's what being a mobster is really like. Everyone thinks mobsters live luxurious rich lives. Some do, but the majority like Lefty are underlings who struggle to get by.

The restaurant was the give away of Donnie being a rat. How he got them to believe that story without taking his shoes off is phenomenal.
The benefit of the doubt can really be something sometimes.

@@arturomillan this film was so good because it's arguably the best changed and adapted version of a true story put to screen. Pistone felt guilt over sonny blacks death, whom he befriended. They adapted it perfectly to make lefty his confidant and best friend, whilst keeping the source material at least 85 percent accurate.
@@patriceaqa288 true, and in real life he had the FBI move on Lefty fast to get him safe behind bars and protected. He later died of natural causes an old man, but Sonny Black being hit made Pistone upset. The mob didn't harbor resentment or take revenge against Pistone since they say him as an outsider who infiltrated. They were more angry at themselves than him.

I'll never understand how Pacino wasn't nominated for best actor for this movie. 0:35 - 0:50 might be the single saddest character moments of his career. He has rarely humanized a character like this - I can't picture anyone else in this role.

@@devonwhite2443 Pacino should have back-to-back Oscars for Godfather 2 and Dog Day Afternoon. He should've been nominated for best actor alongside Brando instead of supporting for GF1. He should have nominations for Scarface, Donnie Brasco, The Insider, Sea of Love, and Insomnia. He's wildly enjoyable in Heat. He has 1 Oscar for Scent of a Woman and somehow he's really underrated.
@@ComictalentI think you lost most of us when you named Insomnia among his best acting displays. Pacino is a legend but that was some of his worst acting in Insomnia. In fact he’s sucked for the past 20 years or so. His acting in Heat was far better than insomnia.

The car dialogue is so tense and done without music. Just squeaky leather seats and coats, and the rattle of a gun, and rubbing the ear with breathing - just like real life. 💯

I just watched Donnie Brasco after The Irishman and noticed that Pacino always gets betrayed.
He got betrayed hella times in the Godfather trilogy

Tony had kind of a weird thing for Gina, not saying incest but he didn't want her to be with anyone without his approval yet alone his best friend. Manny could have went about it a different way, maybe slowly bring the idea up to Tony when he was in a good mood. But "hey here's a surprise party to let you know I'm banging your kid sister!" wasn't the way with a hot head like Tony, he was betrayed in a sense.
This scene breaks your heart
This film is severely under rated and under appreciated when compared to other films in the mob genre. This film is on par with the classics.

So true. Michael Franzese's says this is the most realistic mob movie he's ever seen, and I tend to agree. There's not one character here that feels like a caricature of a real guy

Al Pacino has played all levels of gangster, and done every one of them so brilliantly. I love him in this movie, and I feel like this is the most realistic portrayal.
If you read the book the movie is absolutely wrong about everything especially portraying how close Donnie and Lefty where. They also made Lefty cooler than he really is he was a miserable broke POS
This was a sad movie...but i think shows a more realistic picture of what some mob guys lives were like than most mob movies.

Have some in the family. A couple. Both did fed time. Hard life but had a “break.” One day the went to Vagus and got real “lucky.” He’s long dead and she’s doing food delivery living with her other sister.
Another good one is Gotti not the Travolta one the 90s one with Armand Assante just like this gritty and fantastic dialogue

That was close. Thank God the FBI Was watching Donnie's moves, otherwise, he's going to be toasted.
In some sense, I always felt sympathy for Lefty. He was loyal to Donnie, albeit w his human failures. Mobster, yes, criminal, yes, but a sympathetic character in a human way.
Same here, Donnie was the son Lefty wished he'd had, really sad but loyal character.
He killed over 30 people for no real reason. 😂😂😂 He would have killed you and your whole family if he was told to. Thats what movies do though, make people dumb.
I can't even believe Al Pacino was Acting, that's was just too believable.
This is - in a dark and twisted way - almost heart-wrenching! I know it didn't went down like this and the director added this scene just for "high-tension" and drama purposes - but to watch Lefty crying to him: "Don't say nothing, Donnie! Don't say nothing!" makes you realize how close they were to him and even in the last seconds they couldn't believe he was a Fed. ...even though it wasn't Lefty but Sonny and Anthony Mirra who paid the ultimate price for him being able to infiltrate their ranks...

If you’re caught or suspected to be lying even about the littlest thing and not being able to explain yourself then it literally could end up with a ‘sit down’. The real Joe Pistone (Donnie Brasco) explained this in an interview which I found fascinating.
I know some people don't like this movie for some reason but I loved it. I thought they were both incredible in this.

Al Pacino always made other actors better. His acting is so great that he can turn a b-lister into an A- lister. That's an A - list actor for you.

Very true, but not a lot of guys in this movie were B listers-certainly not Johnny Depp, Michael Madden or Bruno Kirby. Anne Heche also did a great job

i love the ambiguity of lefty holding the gun towards Donnie when they were about to do the hit, it can be read as it was suppose to motivate him to do it by force or lefty having a gut feeling beyond everything was going to take Donnie out the minute he pulled the trigger on sonny red's son.
I always took it as Lefty was going to kill Donny if he hesitated to kill the target as that would mean he’s a rat.
Well he also called him his best friend. Which is a call back from earlier in the movie saying your best friend is the one who ends up killing you.

ok so this is my interpretation of the scene, and what's going on in pacino's head. but i think that he's been suspicious of donny ever since he met him... and his personality.. he's so stubborn, it would be just like him to repeat 'everythings going to be ok donny! don't tell them nothing!' in an ironic way. that's how he is. so at the very end, i think he knew it was him the whole time, he had resigned to it. and in his last cries of defeat he mocked donny, in a sort of 'I know who you are but I don't care we're friends!' sort of final speech.
Bad interpretation suspicion is different from actually secretly believing it. And he had none until he saw the boat clipping. Further supported by when the FBI came and exposed donnie, lefty's face was shock and disbelief as he realized he was right. Def did not think he was fully at this point
Absolutely. I believe the last words Lefty says in the movie is: "Tell Donnie i'm glad it was him!"
I don't think he knew it was him the whole time, he knew after reading the boat article though. Lefty was a true mafia guy he wouldn't just let all of this play along the whole time.
I don't think thats what the movie was portraying. I think he was suspicious after the boat incident but Donnie had convinced him he wasn't a rat, he didn't want to believe it no matter what because the embarrassment and his inevitable death. It didn't dawn on him until the FBI showed him pictures of Donny being sworn in that he truly was a rat and he still didn't want to admit it to Sonny afterwards when Sonny says "they almost had me going for a sec there, good thing you know him so well Lefty" and Lefty says "yea I know Donnie well" realizing he never really knew Donnies background at all and that he had been fooled.
In real life that part is absolutely true, and Pistone grew very close to both Sonny Black and Ben Ruggerio (Lefty).

Ugh, I know. I feel bad for him having to deal with that during his best decade in films. It's noticeable in The Devil's Advocate, too, which was in the same year as this one. But his nails look fine in The Insider.

I thought that Al Pacinos' character of Lefty Ruggiero was more of a flunkey of the Mob. I read the biography of the real Lefty Ruggiero and it said he was a stone cold killer for the Mob.

Lefty’s character was more accurate to Sonny Black in real life, they switched the round for narrative reasons I guess, so that Donnie was basically always dealing with Lefty from the start and it builds their relationship up.
He lived with them 6 years in the end he rat them in the court!
