    I think people are way too hard on the G2 sets, they make criticisms of things that that they wouldn't dare make of the G1 sets, and pick out every flaw down to the most meticulous detail while being able to completely ignore most of the flaws present in the G1 sets. Nostalgia obviously plays a heavy part in it, people look at the G1 sets much more fondly because they grew up with them and they're sentimental towards them, but because they were older when the G2 sets came out there's none of that same sentimentality towards them and also their older, more mature and much more critical brains would've been able to see the flaws much easier with G2

    • @CallanLoF
      @CallanLoF  2 роки тому +20

      You can point out generalities of people being unfair, but the main reason people look back fondly on BIONICLE isn't just for specific nostalgia. It's cause they looked awesome and hit that desirable "cool" factor for all ages. Yes, old BIONICLE sets have their flaws from limited posability to lack of balance, but you'll find very few sets in the first five years of BIONICLE that didn't LOOK "cool". G2 never really hit that factor and got closest with its first wave of Masters who are derivative of the beloved six Toa Mata. After that sales fell off a cliff. There's a lot of other problems that contributed to G2's failure for sure, but people rail it pretty hard because despite a five year gap and ten years of clear examples on what worked and what didn't, Lego stuck with their newer, simpler design language and the sets suffered for it. They had to be over $15 to maximize the CCBS expenses and that greatly decreased the number of BIONICLE impulse buys.

      @@CallanLoF I'd say both G2 waves of toa were pretty cool and in my opinion probably some of the best toa designs we ever got. Comparing 15 bucks to 7 bucks from the time before time is also not exactly fair. Toa sized sets did go up in price gradually after all. By the time we had glatorian, they were already like 12 bucks.
      Imo the biggest problem from the G2 sets is that most sets other that the toa just sucked. And not just in terms of looks. They had generic names, if you could even call that names. Only Umarak and Ekimu were alright.
      That said, for this review, I gotta agree with something. G2 Tahu is probably my least favorite of the masters and uniters for a lot of the same reasons you described.

    • @JohnGrahamDoe
      @JohnGrahamDoe Рік тому +2

      Agree and disagree.
      People do tend to be overly forgiving of the G1 Bionicle sets in a lot of ways, but to some extent this is merited; the earlier sets were LEGO's first foray into the field of posable action figures with action features, so people give them some leeway when it comes to articulation and design choices. Take the Mata Toa for instance: yes, they leave a lot to be desired when it comes to pose-ability, but the iconic character designs, consistent color schemes, and playability of these sets made up for the flaws. As Bionicle moved forward, they would start to address the grievances and innovate accordingly.
      Then compare the general reception of the Mata Toa to the Bionicle Stars Toa Tahu: objectively the sets are very similar, but after almost 10 years of Bionicle, LEGO knew better than to give us another Toa without elbows and knees, yet they did it anyway. That is why people can forgive the OG Tahu for lacking joints, but not another Tahu a decade later with the same glaring issue - not to mention the Stars Tahu didn't even have a gear function.
      And that is also part of why people tend to be kind of harsh on G2 Bionicle; after nearly 15 years of Bionicle, they should have a pretty good idea of what is and isn't acceptable.
      Also, there were many people that were displeased when Bionicle abandoned gear functions for the mainline Toa/Piraka/et al. That was a pivotal moment in my opinion for Bionicle, because without that Technic gear functionality, there was very little setting Bionicle apart from any other series of generic posable action figure. The newfound articulation was nice and all, but at what cost?
      Now I will say, I think the Masters (G2 year 2015) get more hate than they deserve. I think LEGO did a great job of melding Hero Factory style CCBS with technic gear functions; the arm functions are objectively the absolute best Toa gear functions we have gotten in any Bionicle set by every conceivable metric! You get the awesome arm-swinging action feature without sacrificing any articulation or pose-ability whatsoever! I remain utterly in awe of the gear function design featured in those sets; to me that functionality represents the absolute pinnacle of what Bionicle sets have always strived to be - buildable, aesthetically pleasing, displayable action figures that also feature fun Technic play features, taking full advantage of the LEGO/Technic medium.
      That said, for as much as I admire the execution of the gear functions in G2 Year 1, the flat, lifeless aesthetic of the CCBS armor pieces just left so much to be desired. Those pieces just lacked that Bionicle character that made the G1 sets feels so iconic. This isn't something I hold against the designers of those sets; they did the best they could with the pieces they had - a point that only becomes more clear when we look at G2 Year 2...
      Speaking of which, G2 Year 2 was just... a mess. It was a severe over-correct, in that the designers tried so very hard to bring back that Bionicle feel... But they just made all the wrong decisions. In my opinion, the new CCBS armor pieces were just trying way too hard to veer into that mechanical look. If you look at OG Bionicle pieces, sure there are some piston details and greebling effects here and there, but the G2 Year 2 pieces tried to shove them into every square millimeter; the result is a loud, cluttered mess that is just not pleasing to the eye. In addition, they tried to add more Technic by building very unnecessary structures for the limbs that failed by every metric: they served no functional purpose, nor did they add any aesthetic value. They just built them from Technic so that they could say it was more Technic. That is not what anyone wanted... And then they abandoned that gloriously executed arm gear function for the dreaded butt cog... Like, why? Just why..? The butt cog was an utter failure both in concept and in execution... On top of all that, the G2 Year 2 designs were just horrendously ugly, from clashing and inconsistent color schemes to horrifyingly unnatural proportionality between the body parts.
      All in all, G1 does get cut a lot of slack, but I would say it is rightfully so given that the Bionicle line was in a fledgling state. That said, I for one will be the first to say that Bionicle from Inika forward was already headed downhill, and I didn't purchase any sets from the Phantoka/Mistika lines myself. I got back into the Glatorian era to a limited extent, but objectively speaking they were not really any better than the Inika; I just subjectively liked the designs of the Glatorians and the whole post-apocalyptic theme. It felt like a much needed return to form with the tribal aspects that we've really been lacking since the early years of Bionicle. I will also posit that G2 Year 1 Masters were vastly superior sets compared to anything G1 ever put out; I can honestly say that the G2 Year 1 Masters feel like the next true innovation to Bionicle since the Toa Metru, albeit they lack that iconic Bionicle charm due to their CCBS limitations.
      G2 Year 2 just sucks.

    • @RIBAYRO
      @RIBAYRO Рік тому +4

      @@JohnGrahamDoe in a sense, what you are saying is that it was a loosing battle. Stay with plain ccbs, it's bad. Make new ccbs molds, it's bad. I can understand people just not liking ccbs as much as what was part of original bionicle, but stating ccbs is "lifeless" just feels like what some people really mean to say is that is isn't a bionicle piece. Which I believe it just reinforced with your critique of year 2 of G2.
      Now, I do agree that the mata do get some slack, but like you say, it is deserved. They were the first, after all. And at least mechanically it only got (mostly) better. The stars where the very first time we objectively got less out of the mainline sets. Mata level articulation, but no gear function at all.
      The mata also have some of the better color schemes out of the mainline sets too, and they do still manage to look particularly unique. But that is, in a way caused by Lego constantly making new molds every year. Sure, most of the sets did look good, but stick them all together and until the inika came around, the esthetic was all over the place for bionicle.
      Sets like the hordika get more flack because they are strongly clone sets, because some fans just didn't like how they looked and because is was the beginning of gear function departure and introduction of the launcher.
      But I feel a lot of fans are very little critical of sets like the metru. Now, I do like their look, but honestly, you get one, you have all of them. And their colorscheme, while at the time was fresh, it became repetitive as time went on. And in retrospect, it also did indeed look less interesting than something more vibrant or at least attempts to mix up color, as the grey just happens to be more bland.
      Back to G2, I do prefer the first year as well. I still like the second year, but as you say, it felt like a course correction that didn't really need to happen. I wouldn't say it was massive, as it was only 4 pieces. But it was enough to greatly alter the look of the toa. The unification piece, which is fine, I can excuse and even like that one. The other 3, however, did cause some problems. Those being the chest shell piece, the melded masks, and the shared melded blade piece.
      For me the biggest problem wasn't really because they tried to "bioniclefy" ccbs pieces, but rather because they fell a bit into the same trap from old bionicle. Make the new toa wave almost look indistinguishable from the previous one (even worse, because they were supposed to be the same characters and there wasn't an in universe explanation as to why they changed so much like it did for the hordika or the mahri). A lot of the uniters just looked too much apart from their master iterations and overall they looked more homogeneous as well, removing the characteristic look each toa master had in relation to one another.
      Now, the second year didn't just make mistakes. They did try to incorporate more technic into the builds, specifically arms, legs and torso (considering the gear function was now moved to the pelvis). And the builds themselves weren't bad. They just didn't look like their previous selves and looked almost like clone sets even though they didn't really build the exact same like actual clone sets. If only they had more varied body sizes that matched their master look and truly distinct weapons, then maybe the sets could've been better received.
      Interestingly enough, G2 year 2 sets are currently pretty expensive. But more than people realizing they were more than met the eye after they were gone, there's also the fact they did have a shorter run than most waves.
      I apologize for the dissertation.

    • @JohnGrahamDoe
      @JohnGrahamDoe Рік тому +2

       @Exalt_Berto I really don't disagree with much of what you are saying.
      I will say I think there was a way of gracefully returning to form with G2 Year 2, but they just missed the mark. The new thigh armor pieces for example (as seen on Uniter Tahu) looked pretty good! Other pieces though (such as the masks and chest pieces, as you mentioned yourself) just looked... 'noisy,' for lack of a better descriptor.
      As for G2 Year 1, when I say 'lifeless' I really just mean that the CCBS armor pieces featured there were just so... flat. They lacked any sort of texture whatsoever, which is what made them feel lifeless to me. I don't feel like I'm looking at bio-mechanical organisms, but rather robotic endoskeletons with an outer shell of flat, albeit colorful armor. Now I understand that is a completely subjective take, but to me the latter just doesn't have that Bionicle feel.
      Aside from that though, if the Bionicle G2 Year 1 sets just had some better armor pieces, I would say they are absolutely the best Bionicle sets we have ever had! Especially when you touch on how the old Bionicle Toa were very much copy-and-paste; they definitely were, and I think G2 Year 1 took a fair crack at breaking the mold (especially when you consider Onua for example, with his much broader chest; they only other thing I could have really asked for would be an inverted gear function for Pohatu's legs as a bit of a callback, but I digress).
      If I had to pick another small nitpick with G2 as a whole, I would say that I'm not a fan of how the new masks are completely incompatible with any G1 headpieces (or any other LEGO/Technic system piece for that matter). That was a big gripe I had with the Inika as well, which is why I'm less inclined to forgive them for making the same mistake again.

    Gonna be honest gonna have to disagree with you on that g2 stuff specifically ccbs. I think it’s a great building system that brings constraction on par with system finally. Honestly I prefer it to a extent over the original jumbled fragile mess of a “system” bionicle had. Is it over designed with a ton of weird pistons in places that don’t make sense? No but it really doesn’t need to be. I think big part of why g2 did so poorly is because so many people just dismissed it as “hero factory” which is honestly quite disrespectful to how much effort lego put into g2 to make it distinct from previous constraction themes.

      @@Legomicroman I mean can’t you say the same thing for let’s say inika torso armor? It’s pretty hard to find a use for that piece outside of it just being torso armor if anything the more freeing ball joint system that ccbs has allows for more creativity with a majority of the pieces being far less specialized than the original “system”. A inkia torso will allways be a torso av matoran chest pieces will allways be av matoran chests and so and and so forth. The ccbs system has far less specialized elements allowing for more creativity in creating extremely impressive builds. Good examples being the build able general grievous or the witch doctor from the third wave of hero factory. I’d also say that The ccbs system is far less fragile then g1 when I need to use a g1 part let’s say a hand piece I’m allways terrified that the moment I pop that joint into the socket that it will shatter making me downright afraid to moc with the parts. Ccbs on the other hand never breaks from simply using it I’ve not had a single broken ccbs part ever .

    • @Bionickpunk
      @Bionickpunk Рік тому

      G1 parts had the issue where the connector parts broke easily due to the limb pieces being in different colors that produced a weaker plastic (lime and transparent colors come to mind) along with redesigned connectors having a weaker connection, leading to even more cracks. CCBS had far better designed sockets, which enabled them to make differently colored limbs that wont brake when you sneeze at them. CCBS is more durable for play and building, which is the entire point of Lego. They really messed up the quality control on G1, which gets even more noticeable with time.

    In regards to the Mistika and Phantoka, I get the whole "adaptive armor" thing but I wish they still kept elements of the Toa Nuva's normal form in the adapted design. Pohatu's really the only one who retained any of his original appearance, in that his stripped down air-adapted Kakamu Nuva resembles the lower half of the normal Kakamu Nuva.

    Honestly my favorite Tahu is the 2015 one. I only wish they made colored bones rather than using black and dark gray, replacing those parts and the silver would’ve really put the look together for me.

    I'm not sure how blasphemous this statement would be considered, but in my book, G2 Uniter Tahu with his gold mask and the bird creature attached to him is the coolest the character has ever looked. It's like some over-the-top final form.

    • @CallanLoF
      @CallanLoF  2 роки тому

      It looks way better than without and does look special, but his scrawny legs and waist still bring it down. I agree in concept it's great, in execution it's the only way the set looks decent to me. OG Mata style is still the most appealing aesthetic in my book.

      @@CallanLoF Journey to One revamps of the set make him look way better proportioned. The original set is scrawny and lanky in all the wrong places.

    I have most of the official Tahu Versions, only missing Mistika and Stars( I lost the interest in Bionicle before Stars, found it again as G2 came out), I like most of the G2 Figures but yes the Uniters were worse in many ways as the Masters. Your MOCs look amazing. My first Toa was Pohatu, sill like the Mata and Nuva versions the most after that it got worse for every Stone Toa

    I recently rebuilt 2014 tahu by using von nebula and random hero factory Parts, so he looks massive and buff. Wielding giant sword made from his ,,snowboard" and a giant shield that can be used as a chainsaw. on his back he Has a special socket to hide the golden mask inside. He also Has a custom ripped cape that looks burned, because he is a toa of fire. The only backside of his build is that In order to cover the torso pins, i used the fist parts which should've give him abs, but it gave him lets just say...breasts

    i know they are not tahu, but why not cover the other fire toas?. honestly Metru vakama and its generation were the pinnacle of bionicles, they had all the mechanisms from previous generations, awesome proportions, the best posability, and they could holster their weapons, yeah maybe the bow of vakama was lackluster, but still, it was almost a homage to Samus
