Advancing with Watercolor: Technique - Creating Depth

- Today’s Watercolor is quite challenging. I use a complex motif to illustrate challenges and solutions in creating depth in painting. I use a “Painters Perspective” which employs one point perspective. I also use repeated shapes that diminish Into the distance. The perspective is established in the drawing by estimation. Rulers and other aids defeat the goal of an expressive painting. I describe the process I use to achieve a believable perspective based on a presumed horizon line and a vanishing point. Wow--beautiful! I appreciate the artistic education you provide while you paint. Your videos are far above others I have watched because of this--I've learned so much. Also I am using a ceramic pan like you use here and have tried using fresh paint rather than the dried paint to add water to use. The fresh paint has made a nice improvement in the value of the color not looking so washed out. Love the inspiration that you provide to continue to learn and improve.

Yeah! I think I finally get the steeper bit as things go back. I did really like the video you did on formal perspective. But this way you explain it lends a more artistic view of the art work Really another great lesson and a wonderful piece. Love the sun light feeling. Wonder how long it takes to get the feel of the amount of pigment you have on the brush?

Have you tried out digital watercolor rebelle 5 pro? (Onsale right now I think) if so, wo design. What your thoughts of it are.? Might be a good tool for preliminary studies, as you can undo steps if they don't work out right, and note why they didn't, and adjust. My problem is that my attempts start out looking like waterco,or, but the more I work it, the more it begins losing thst look, ie canvas texture gets covered too much with pigment, so,it begins looking like an acrylic painting more. UT I can work in layers and delete them if they don't work,out. Which is a big plus, sort of, but doing physical paintings forces us to make right decisions more as there are no undos really. Digitsl,has its pluses and minuses I guess.

as always, thank you for sharing your time. I do a lot of 1,2,3,4, and 5 point perspective architectural drawings for pleasure but watching your loose pencil work is wonderful. Do you use a 1 metre pencil? Just joking. Your shirt is perfect for showing perspective.

Interesting the way the Alizarin on the foreground warms it up...whereas I always think of Alizarin as a cool colour
I was thinkin the same thing. I suppose it must be because it's all relative to the other colours present.
Hi, alizarin is a cool primary red (not a center red of course) . But is a red after all! and will read as warm against blues, greens and purples. Is against warm reds, oranges and some yellows that will be felt as cooler.
Ann, yes - color is sooo relative - each color dependent on what’s next to it....always a balancing act..
