Advancing with Watercolor: Looking for the Big Shape "Fish Shacks"

- This is a video done as a supplement to a watercolor class taught by Gary Tucker in Boston. This video demonstrates how an artist looks at their motif as a composite of shapes and uses these shapes to bring strength and nuance to their painting. The painting is done in 2 colors ultramarine blue and Burnt Sienna to introduce the advantage of a limited palette and the creative mindset that comes about as a result.
This video shows haw the artist "sees" their subject in terms of shapes and exaggerates the connections of shapes to create a more vital and engaging image

Your descriptions show a wonderful command of language and analysis of the techniques of painting. The clearest I have found on the web. Congratulations and thanks!
thank you Gary! I'm a beginner and often practice by following instructions from video tutorials and , honestly, yours is the first one that inspires to try something on my own). Very very helpful!
Gary, Just watching your latest video, I don't think your painting is even dry yet. ! I like your style of painting , it's what I strive for in my own work. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. We never stop learning watercolor.
Just adding the bow creates a whole new atmosphere for this work. I love the way you work.
Thanks for another great lesson! Please keep them coming. I am learning so much and I'm really grateful for that. The painting turned out amazing as always. Blessings, Stacy
Wow, thank you for showing how to think about approaching a complex subject! It is so helpful to learn how to think about it and where to start.
Wow, this was wonderful, especially the second part on tone. Very much what I need.
Filled with generous and useful information. Thank you!
This is such a great lesson! Excellent instruction and demonstration! Wow! 👍😄😍🖼️🎨🖌️👏👏👏👏
This is just amazing, the first part is great but the second is mind blowing! the way you interpret that image and make it so much more expressive and interesting, even in a monotone version, I would have never foreseen this end result on that foto, it really shows an artist view, just beautiful, thank you so much for such great lesson

Thank you, Gary. The problem that I have is how do you know that you actually have the values correct?
Thank You
Hi Gary, do you use paper in your tonal studies B/W, the same size as the coloured finished work ? Or what size is this tonal study ? Cheers Grant
You link to tutorial accompanying the video don’t work
Good job 😁😁😁😁👍👍👍👍👍👍
Is that a bamboo brush, squirrel?
Great‼️

excellent demo
thank you
Your paper seems to stay wet for some time. Do you stretch your paper first as I’ve noticed some artists don’t bother?
Also after wetting the paper (if you do) do you wait for the sheen to go before applying the paint? I find this the most the most confusing part of water colours as of course the outcome can be quite different. You seem to layer paint upon paint so the surface must be quite moist whereas some demos advise you to wait until the paper is dry before applying another layer.
Use small bottle water sprayer
When you paint your darks, do you usually use paint straight from the tube or do you mix? Thanks.
I usually mix with a small amount of water - just enough to get it moving
Could you please tell me what kind of brushes you are using. Thanks. I've grown so much as a painter because of you. Blessings.

Great video. One thing you might be interested in knowing though, there is no such bird called a seagull. It is just a gull. Just a point of interest.
