thanks so much for watching this piece. i spent over a month editing and had serious export issues that made bringing this content difficult but for sure worth it. Very proud of how this came out. your comments are encouraged, please like and subscribe if you love street photography and hit that share button if you feel your network could benefit from seeing this!
Its sad this man gets no credit but everyone claims joe is such a pioneer. Thank you for this interview. I needed this. Im from the bay area but dated a girl from brooklyn..man she had so many brooklyn stories. And I dont know by whom but she was photographed as well and showed me a published book of her and other family from when she was a kid. It was iconic...r.i.p. zoe anna king.
Under 6,000 views is criminal. This is, arguably, the best interview that I have seen with a photographer who isn't insecure enough to hold back his wisdom for fear of someone stealing his spot. What he has done is exactly what I rued not doing in the 80's when I first got into photography, and that is to document everything, but hindsight is a beautiful thing. The more that you understand, that things never remain the same, is the more that you should understand, you should, document the moment you're in.
lol. Ya well. I’m still under 20k subs here. You could help by copying the link and sharing it to your network. It’s a compelling story that needs to be heard. It’s gotten way more traffic in the last months than last summer when I made it. Lots of big things happening on my channel. Come visit. Thx for your support Edward. Worked on this edit for 5weeks.
I discovered Jamel Shabazz's photography on The Independent Photographer. I searched and catalogued hundreds of his photos. I believe that Jamel's subjects can subscribe to Roland Barthes' words: "[...] photographic ceremonial: I lend myself to the social game, I pose, I know I'm posing, I want you to know it, but this additional message must not alter in the slightest [...] the precious essence of my person: only what I am, outside of any effigy." I said to myself: I absolutely must return to NY and try in every way to meet him. Then I buy a Canon lens and see a nice review on this channel. Finally, now, I see that this channel is taking care of Jamel Shabazz! What a beautiful coincidence! Warm greetings from Italy.
Hey Simone. I exhibited with him back in 2009. We'll do more stuff together. He doesn't love being on camera but we have a relationship so we made it happen. I miss italy. Peep some of my work for Nottinblu in northern italy at stevecarty.com in my work section.
This is by FAR the most inspiring and informative interview on photography Ive seen in a while, thank you for sharing this incredible content with us. Keep up the great work!
Loved this. Never heard of this legend and I'm so glad UA-cam pushed this on my feed. The word that comes to mind with Jamal is 'excellence'. His commitment to mixing technical excellence, mastery of skill and a commitment to empowering others. Jamals focus on education, goal setting, excellence and commitment is such an inspiration. Thank you for showcasing this most amazing gentleman!
This has encouraged me so much! I'm a part of an upcoming exhibition with 5 other locally known photographers. It's one of many opportunities I will have. But I've doubted my work compared to these local legends. I think the take away for me is. Don't wait for the opportunity, create it. Wow, so much to think about. Thank you for sharing this interview and respect to Mr. Shabazz🙏🏾
Carty I know I tell you all the time I need you to know how incredible you are....this is so deep, so cool so inspiring and Jamel Shabazz is AMAZINGGGGGGGGGG.......I don't have words for this episode....thank you my brother thank you
Ali, thanks so much for watching. If you enjoyed, sharing this to your social networks with your thoughts will bring more eyes to the project. I need the eyes on this. Every single person matters.
Hey Steve. I just found out your channel today and your content is amazing. And i'm glad that I clicked on this interview, didn't know Jamel to (i'm from Brazil), and damn, what a powerfull interview. His vision of the purpose of the photographer is amazing, and also his work is out of this world. I'm just starting at street photo and both of you are really a great inspiritation to me. I hope more people get to see this video.
Powerful work, and the dialogue shared between the two of you, I can’t express into words but how inspiring it is too see the power of the image and selfless to want to uplift others with the image and that’s on top of the work you both do to help others. You’re both in the pantheon of the greats, my top 3👏👏
Peace to my brother God Jamel Shabazz, he is another shinning example of how Allah's 5% make a devastating impact on the world once again! Allah's the God, always has been, and always will be.... Peace, to the world!!!!
So dope to see this interview! Appreciate the insight and inspiration. Crazy to look back on some of that footage from Toronto, I think I shot that on a flip cam during the early years of 1 LOVE T.O. Full circle moment, thanks for sharing Steve and thanks Jamel!!!
Amazing experience going through this edit Bryan. Thanks for taking the time to watch. I took an hour from this interview… I may make a 10m cut but it looses so much of the wisdom and the story. Your last video took off. You’re better on camera for sure.
tapped in already, and "liked". Lemme know if yall need an audio remaster, and level up. so far this doc is great, but the audio is a bit low. just let me know. salute brothas
@@stevecarty If cameras are just a tool, then why don’t they use Hyundais for F1 racing.. it’s just a tool, a car is a car is car ? Using different cameras give you different effects just like using different cars give you different handling.. It would’ve been nice if Mr Shabazz broke down some of his favorite cameras, that’s all I was asking Ansel Adams.
@@highway65 the attitude I love. You’re comparing speed to creativity. Angel adam says those two can’t be compared. This isn’t Apples and oranges. This is cameras and F1 cars. Ill be watching this one for a while. Passionate people like yourselves sharing such informative gold is a blessing to those ready to receive it. I definitely needed this one. I wish I had this kind of inspiration and community in my early days of being an artist. I think I would have picked up a camera then. Good stuff. Thanks
