I like that he now mentions numbers of photos he liked from his roll. It often looks like that photography youtubers only take banger shots. Thanks Jason
I really like how you categorized your photos into keepers and portfolio shots. I’ve had a hard time figuring out what photos to do with all my random photos and I think I will take this opportunity to start a portfolio of my favorite shots!
I dont know how this pertains exactly to what you said, but whenever I was deciding on whether a shot was a portfolio shot, if I had to question myself or second guessed the photograph, then it wasn't deserving to be in the portfolio. Easy trick for anyone interested.
Dude it was super helpful. Made it feel more down to earth for us “non-professionals/sponsored” photographers. Shows that every frame in every roll isnt a banger right from the rip. Big props Jason like the addition of showing the work
6:01- 6:21 - that's my block! That's where I've lived, as a photographer for 5 years - you made it look lovely. Also you're absolutely right, Blank Street Coffee is PURE AESTHETIC, because it...is. It's owners raised $40m in venture capital funding to build a massive coffee chain, by cos-playing an indy coffee shop.
the thing with xp2 is that you can overexpose it, and the grain really smooths out. when you underexpose it or have lots of shadow in the frame, it'll get grainy and crunchy. i'll rate it anywhere from 100 to 800 iso on a single roll depending on the situation and how i feel. it's fun like that
Always love your videos and most especially your sense of humour, always waiting for the next one. Also your taste in artists, love Hopper. Thanks for sharing.
I've had an Agfa Optima (the electronic one with a built in flash) on my shelf for at least 15 years, and just loved the way it looks. I've never even investigated if it even works until today, after seeing this video. I cleaned it, tossed in a couple of batteries, and now I'm ready to test it out! Thanks for the inspiration.
You managed to capture a lot of great images during this trip - in my opinion, some of your most inspired looking work in a while. Just as important, I feel that you managed to strike a great balance between composition and opportunity. So many street photographers today flock to places with the highest amount of foot traffic possible as this provides them with the most candid opportunities. Sadly, those same photographers seemingly pay little attention to the composition of their images. (I did not know that Manhattan is dominated by the same big box stores found everywhere else in the country, how depressing.) Essentially much of what is referred to as street photography today is what was once called snapshots. It seems obvious from he images you've shared here that you are managing to do a good job at keeping composition in mind while also managing to deal with the people in the frame.
That Edward Hopper exhibition was magnificent. Went to NY for my 50th in February and stumbled on that after a walk along the high line, during which I'd also taken my favourite photo from the trip. Great day. Back to Hopper, a masterclass in observation, framing, composure and colour ( yeah with a U).
Hi Kyle, I work in a camera store Fotohandel Delfshaven, Delft NL. We specialize in vintage premium cameras. and the heavy knobs and wheels are a common thing to happen. Nothing to worry about but it can get a bit more stiff over time. Its old grease and needs cleaning and by a general shutter and mechanical service. Of course the dent is a bit suspicious in this case. You can contact our technician: amsterdam camera repairs if you ever want to get it serviced back to new again. Oh and btw: 2.8 is not worth the upgrade, I actually prefer the 3.5F lens over the 2.8! Great camera’s! Enjoy it!
Glad ya'll came to town! Nice look of of the Isle of Joy from your visiting perspective and got to hang with some of the Lomography scene which had a lot to do with me returning to film after many years away. Come back again and venture into Brooklyn, particularly Greenpoint and out to Bushwick, you'd dig it! Good work Jason and Caleb!
Honestly I don’t know which is more impressive the amount of rare film stocks you own or that you can still find flaming hot Mountain Dew. I’ve searched every gas station and camera shop near me and they’ve got nothin!
Really enjoyed this one! I especially liked how you showed all the shots from the rolls and categorised them to keepers and portfolio shots. One your best work in a while for sure! Looking forward to the next one, cheers
Heyyyy! Coooool ! You had fun with the Apparat!! I have had mine for a couple of weeks now, and am excited to get my results back from Dark Room here soon!! Fun trip you guys! Xo
First of all, you are one of the most entertaining people in the very best way I need to secondly, you inspire me to go out and shoot it's as simple as that you are amazing this channel, fantastic the very best to you, always
Wow. I flew to NY this past weekend for the Hopper exhibit too. LOL. Excellent show. I also recommend the 50 Years of Hip Hop at Fotografiska too. Also an excellent show.
I loved this video. So beautifully aesthetically and I’m learning so much about film ❤️ I currently shoot with a Minolta srt200. I’m so obsessed with shooting film 🥺 new sub!!!
wonderful visit to the big apple! Your problem with mamiya sharpness was my horror. Doing Portraits and models, the 180.. on C330 was so sharp ! I used stockings ( still avaialble back then) or a piece of sticky tape on filter! E Hopper did those lovely weird images, that one remenbers of a place time dream whatever! Great work. Bravo.
Very cool to see what you got out of the kind of gray environment I have most of the year. The shot with the big brown building made me go "....damn." 👍
Superb as ever and after spending a week in the big fruity thing just before Xmas last, it is great to see how many different angles there are to shooting the city
These are some dope shots, I actually had a similar issue with your first Mamiya 7 roll with a roll I put through my Canon EOS 600! I think it must’ve been down to the battery as well, the camera was odd that day, suggesting very slow shutter speeds for 400 ISO film!
Jason, I may miss the mark here in your taste in photography and artists but I’d recommend taking a look at the works of Saul Chase (a NY artist) especially his work from the seventies and eighties. You might like it. Keep up the great work.
Can’t wait for the Stockezy podcast - man has literally put me on game and also put me in crippling debt on so many occasions. If you see, Jason, f*** you in the most loving way.
Lucky you, that you got already the Hopper New York book. Will be released in Germany in April 2023. Can't wait to get it in my hands. And thanks for the great video! What about abandoned places in NYC?
I'm a fan of XP2. I just have a lot of fun with it. I still have one roll of XP1 120, that expired in 1994. I had 3 rolls, but have had 2 rolls of fun.
I like the grading on your videos a lot! also, is that a pro mist or glimmer glass or something else u are using? Contrast and diffusion seem just perfect to my eyes.
I've been shooting XP2 35mm for a while now and it's surprisingly not too bad. Yeah, it's grainy but not as bad as you'd think. Like, in comparison, I would say the grain on the 35mm is equal for the dpi as the 120 (maybe even better on the 35mm actually). I also shoot HP5 and other b&w films, and each has their loveable characteristics - and the XP2 for sure hold the title of grainiest, but I love that
I like the way you called it 'The Big Crapple'. I actually sometimes call it 'The Big Snapple' because I love Snapple and there's so many places you can purchase it there. I'm from a small town and you can't buy it here, although we can buy it sometimes from traders who pass through. I can usually get a bottle for a few turnips or a couple of pounds of millet. There's one trader who comes every year and my mom insists we go and visit him, and that I tell him how I'm doing at school which always feels kind of random. Last time as we were driving back she went all quiet and then said how I had his eyes. Anyway thanks for the vlog really enjoyed it
Pertaining to XP2, that's a development issue or exposure issue. I've seen XP2 stand developed in Rodinal with next to no grain. The chemicals used to develop your XP2 may have been fucked. XP2, esp when overexposed, exhibits next to no grain. It also doesn't handle underexposure well, esp on the shadows so maybe expose for the shadows and see if the grain persists.
I would ditch the agfa for a Rollei 35. Just as compact but with a better lens and built quality and fully manual control. Scale focus is a bitch though. But you don't seem to shoot a lot of close up stuff so hyperfocal focusing would be fine
Are you exposing XP2 at 1600 ISO to get that much grain?? From my experience shooting at 400 ISO it's as smooth as other 100 ISO B&W stocks. A real defining feature is that it has dynamic range like Portra, but b&w and a different tonality. It's really flexible in post, be it in the darkroom or in Lightroom.
you mentioned once that you know a way to emulate aerchrome with filters or something and that you will do video about that but you have to "finalise the process", how far are you with that? will there be a video about that soon?
My Mamiya 7 gets cold sometimes so I packed it with hand warmers when I shoot in the snow. Last week I was in 0 degree weather and I got about 3 shots before the camera bricked up.
"I have no other way of suffering for my art" says the man chugging flaming hot mtn dew
@@trippwilsonphoto 🤣
No way, New York was so good they made New York 2
AKA New New York (not to be confused with Sinatra’s fictitious New York New York)
this alternate reality has cheap aerochrome?
Newer York
If there’s a second New York, then what about that other New York in Vegas?
I heard they’re working on a prequel too, called York
in todays economy watching these videos is my preferred way of shooting film
Mood
I like that he now mentions numbers of photos he liked from his roll. It often looks like that photography youtubers only take banger shots. Thanks Jason
Seeing a new Grainydays video in my sub box is like finding a nice camera at a thrift store for $5.
It's probably shitty but you get that tiny hit of dopamine
I understood that reference
I did find a nice Minolta for 4 dollars
I really like how you categorized your photos into keepers and portfolio shots. I’ve had a hard time figuring out what photos to do with all my random photos and I think I will take this opportunity to start a portfolio of my favorite shots!

Easy trick for anyone interested.
No joke, I’m the guy who was standing next to Jason at the beers and cameras event who won the roll of 120 Aerochrome. My bruises are still healing.
😂
Damn. Really enjoyed the keepers segment of each roll very cool to see them all together like that.
Dude it was super helpful. Made it feel more down to earth for us “non-professionals/sponsored” photographers. Shows that every frame in every roll isnt a banger right from the rip. Big props Jason like the addition of showing the work
Definitely was a great addition. Made it so it wasn’t just random shots sprinkled throughout
6:01- 6:21 - that's my block! That's where I've lived, as a photographer for 5 years - you made it look lovely. Also you're absolutely right, Blank Street Coffee is PURE AESTHETIC, because it...is. God i fucking hate blank street
Love that you said how Edward Hopper is kind of your guy while seated in front of a framed Lion King poster, which is his most under appreciated work.
the thing with xp2 is that you can overexpose it, and the grain really smooths out. when you underexpose it or have lots of shadow in the frame, it'll get grainy and crunchy. i'll rate it anywhere from 100 to 800 iso on a single roll depending on the situation and how i feel. it's fun like that
Outside of the photos. The cinematography in this video was spectacular
One of my favourite episodes. As others have said, the keepers/portfolio sections really anchored it. Top tier!
That double exposed red scale photo actually looks amazing. Also overall I think I actually liked the lomo apparat shots best
Always love your videos and most especially your sense of humour, always waiting for the next one. Also your taste in artists, love Hopper. Thanks for sharing.

Great video, I love seeing you shoot New York, especially because you added people to your compositions. My favorite photo in the video is at 19:43.

I really like when you show the overview of the roll and how many you like and the portfolio pics. Keep it up Jason
I'm such a sucker for the 4:3 aspect ratio, especially when Snyder did it for his Justice League. Keep up the great vids/vlogs!

I didn’t know you could find all of New York at a thrift store for $5. Great find!
Honestly I don’t know which is more impressive the amount of rare film stocks you own or that you can still find flaming hot Mountain Dew. I’ve searched every gas station and camera shop near me and they’ve got nothin!
Jason, You are genuinely an amazing artist and a big inspiration for my own photography and how I look at my art as well.
Sincerely,
A stoned artist
thanks. this brightened up my day. especially like the shot of the bar at the crosswalk at 10:20.
200K🙌🔥 Congrats! Really enjoyed this episode.
Very much enjoyed the break down of keepers/portfolio shots per roll. Definitely want to see more of that
I think the mounting of the mic arm to the leg of the stool is the biggest pro move of this entire post.
Absolutely loved this episode! thanks for sharing, looking forward for all those podcast episodes :)
Xo
Wicked cool shots! NY is a bustling photographers dream, so much to capture. An exquisite video as usual, love the breakdown of the rolls.
Wow, I learned about lens netting today...thanks Jason!
Love the filming too. Some of those street level shots at the skyscrapers looked like the intro to Succession
First of all, you are one of the most entertaining people in the very best way I need to
secondly, you inspire me to go out and shoot
it's as simple as that
you are amazing
this channel, fantastic
the very best to you, always
I just wanna get back to NYC now...
What a trip, the B&H store was fantastic and we need more of them in the country.
Super excited for the gxace episode of mamiyamigos love that man
Agreed
Loving some of the new images, again, you are on an upward streak! We are there for it.
So happy to show you guys around and happy you made it to that beautiful hotel!
Yesssss lomo apparat I knew noticing it would turn out 😎
Wow. I flew to NY this past weekend for the Hopper exhibit too. LOL. Excellent show. I also recommend the 50 Years of Hip Hop at Fotografiska too. Also an excellent show.
Love the new keeper and portfolio review of every roll!
Ohh. I've been to that exhibit at the whitney! I went because of your recommendation a few years back
ahhhh yes, New York...... Glad you guys got there...Great stuff
There was *for sure* something up with that 4x5 xp2. That film is almost grainless but (like colour c41 film) it does like a lot of light.
Yeah I've always had great grain-free results with XP2
I loved this video. So beautifully aesthetically and I’m learning so much about film ❤️ I currently shoot with a Minolta srt200. I’m so obsessed with shooting film 🥺 new sub!!!

THANK YOU for 06:09. This is exactly what I've been asking for. I liked this video a lot.

today is a good day, off work and jason drops a new video. time to do nothing but watch this for the next 31 mins
You should do a video on your workflow and how you store +organize your film photos!
I miss Brooklyn…I am an Yankee till I die BUT I wouldn’t live there these days…just visit! Great video, great photos! 🙌🏾
The OG Four Loco was ... interesting. I was introduced to it in Key West eleven plus years back. Transformative.
One of your very best videos.
Jason, I may miss the mark here in your taste in photography and artists but I’d recommend taking a look at the works of Saul Chase (a NY artist) especially his work from the seventies and eighties. You might like it.
Keep up the great work.
A highly anticipated sequel, Do I smell a trilogy in the making?
Great Going. on this one!!... is there a link to the previous NY trip?
I was at this exhibit at the Whitney. My friend took photos on film and it’s what got me into film shooting again over the past few weeks
The shutter and rewind lever sound on the agfa 😍
going to nyc fir the first time later this year and this makes me so excited to shoot when im there
Really like the idea of the little overview after every roll :)
great video, loved the adventure. What stocking did you use? I used to use Fogal silk black stockings but they are very hard to get these days.
Some of your best work in my opinion!
I have a photography assignment I need to do and u inspired me with the lomo redscale
0:39 is it on purpose that there is a Edward Hopper and Edward Hopper in New York book in the background?
Can’t wait for the Stockezy podcast - man has literally put me on game and also put me in crippling debt on so many occasions.
If you see, Jason, f*** you in the most loving way.

18:25 cutest moment on this channel ever or maybe I am just tired of sleeping with my cameras.
Best part of Thursdays.
Maaan K&L and Parva!! I used to live Jackson Heights and those places were always solid. Hope you got some good Indian and Tibetan grub.
I've been shooting XP2 35mm for a while now and it's surprisingly not too bad. Yeah, it's grainy but not as bad as you'd think. Damn a Rodecaster Pro out in the wild. The Cadillac of podcast recording and mixing.
Pertaining to XP2, that's a development issue or exposure issue. I've seen XP2 stand developed in Rodinal with next to no grain. The chemicals used to develop your XP2 may have been fucked. XP2, esp when overexposed, exhibits next to no grain.

That’s what happens when developer is reused 10x. Grain the size of a truck

Rollei 35 is a great camera, besides the scale focus (but that just adds a challenge!)
that edit of you loading the trusty Mamiya was clean af
what camera and lens do you use to shoot your videos? and how do you get that analog film look? i love how everything looks in your videos. keep up
Black mist filter
So good. I wish I could photograph NYC but I've lived here too long.
Can confirm, OG Four Lokos were trouble. I am so happy to be passed that segment of my life, and come out alive.
Or it’s heavily expired
Great channel, I'm new to photography and would like to start using 35mm film what vlogs of yours would you recommend I look at, please?
you mentioned once that you know a way to emulate aerchrome with filters or something and that you will do video about that but you have to "finalise the process", how far are you with that? will there be a video about that soon?
Really liking the vlog/portfolio video style
Ayy, so sad that XP-2 didin't turned out. Really wanted to see Your shots on it, it's my fave film stock!
Yo is that a black Minolta FreedomExplorer next to the TX-1?
Amaaazing budget point and shoot 🌱
Jason has single handedly doubled the price of an Agfa, and if that ain't influence, I don't know what is.
“Say no more” was absolute gold 😂
So you feature the Agfa 1535 in a video, and now one shows up on eBay for $675! Glad I already have one.
My Mamiya 7 gets cold sometimes so I packed it with hand warmers when I shoot in the snow. Last week I was in 0 degree weather and I got about 3 shots before the camera bricked up.
It's sad I couldn't see you when you did that meeting, those were my last days in NYC, hope to see the reason of my happiness someday
perfect timing
Where is part 1? I need more!
you should take a look at the olympus 35sp. its just like the 1535 but waaay better, fully mechanical and has program
