Cheers Shane, for another informative vid. 👍 I'm a fan of the grade, Elevation Evaluation route as recommended by you. So much less daunting than a ramp test! I'll still carry on to the top of the grade for my next FTP I think 🤔..
Yeah, don't dodge your FTP test. You got this! I swear by the Ramp Test for setting zones accurately enough to gain the desired results from all workouts. Like you said, none of these algorithms are perfect for everyone, but if you consistently stick to one methodology (e.g. Ramp Test), 300 W for you will always be 300 W for you. Awesome job, as always!
Ramp test was 20+ watts too high for me, making 2x20 impossible. I wouldn't even say it's a decent benchmark for anything except literally 1 minute power-anaerobic capacity workouts will improve my ramp test result but isn't going to improve my threshold.
I like the fact the FTP doesn't drop. I just tried Xert's free trial. It's discouraging that the TP keeps dropping after every ride. My most recent FTP test was 236. It's dropped to 218. Meanwhile I averaged 230 for 67 min on Alp D'Zwift and I know I'm getting stronger. Even though I tend to gradually increase watts in structured workouts manually over time. Auto increases in FTP are good to keep workouts difficult and see progress.
@titaniumben9923 the problem is it decaying when my FTP is going up. My FTP is likely in the 240's now based on my workouts and it's going backwards in the app.
@@starlitshadows if you are ramping up training load, you will improve your ftp even with decay. If you are simply doing z2 efforts then turning off decay is recommended and easy to do. Once you start to introduce races or max efforts then you will get breakthroughs. Honestly it's stupid never having a decaying ftp, you maybe on the way up now, but there is far less issue with an underrated ftp compare to overrated one. People used to only do ftp tests once a month in the old training plans.
Damn.. point 4 is the behaviour I want. I wanna be in the same gear as the last interval... Not trying to shift up 5 gears to get a 10 second sprint in
Thank for a good explanation. One thing I find strange that has not been updated yet by Zwift. When you ride on a fixed route, the altitude graphics in the upper right corner does not show the complete route, it sometimes changes when you come to a cross section (set by Zwift and cannot be changed). Since the route is fixed from the beginning, then I do not understand why the graphics does not show the actual route. It would be good to know when to save energy and when to go all in, so you have enough energy for the complete route.
Not a fan of The Grade. The leveling off in the middle drops my average even though I raise my gear ratio. Will be interesting to see if this automatic FTP estimation improves the experience on climbs where I’m staying consistent.
On hold until we see them ironing out a lot of the issues via firmware. DCR nailed the overview and paralleled my experience of using it for a few 100km.
Sorry for hijacking this video, but will you be releasing the Ace review soon? I've already seen the one from Ray, but I value your opinion just as much.
Apple TV 4K user. I noticed today after update that the trainer difficulty slider went away. It seems like it changed to easier and I couldn’t change it.
Love your vids! Any chance you could cover what is happening with Garmin Connect? Don't think I'm alone in saying that the ecosystem has been troubling users in the past weeks due to its very poor performance. Wonder if you noticed anything...
@@gplama I've made a list of about 10 issues which I won't trouble you with, but the main ones relate to activities being incorrectly or not recorded at all into the training status, load, and other functionalities (e.g. 1. 100km bike ride shows as 20 load, not showing training effect at all, or 2. virtual ride from Zwift showing as activity in connect, but nowhere to be found in the training status or load functionality). Sleep tracking is not recording or recording incorrectly. I'm not referring to a few minutes off, but to an 8 hour sleep being recorded as a 3 hour nap or something similar to that. I wear the watch 24/7. The new garmin coach as a consequence is quite useless seeing that it thinks I don't ever sleep nor train. One more thing, is that all of the functionalities when working take a very long time to update, sometimes they only update exclusively in the morning, once a day rather than continuous, and sometimes at the end of the day, again, rather than continuous. Also, having synced the devices, I often have different information displaying on watch, phone, and website. The reason I use these products is to get an accurate picture of my training/fitness journey during and post activity which is something I haven't been able to get in the past couple of weeks. Wondering if having a fenix 7 has something to do with it... btw, i found that they just released another update, like the 4th in the past few weeks and I hope again that at least the basic issues are fixed. Not even mentioning what they could be doing better here... Much love
@@gplama Not sure where my previous reply just went... ok, so... let's try again. I've got about 10 issues I wrote down, but the main idea is that activities are not being recorded at all or being recorded incorrectly. For example, a 100km ride I did shows up as 20 load and does not show any sort of training effect whatsoever. Also, one virtual ride I did on Zwift shows as an activity in connect but can't be found anywhere in the functionalities such as training status, load, etc. I found that there is a lot of lag in the way information is displayed, meaning that some functionalities are updated once a day rather than being a continuous display of where you are in your fitness journey. The lag can sometimes be of a couple of days. An example of this being some activities not showing in the exercise load or training load graph or showing on a different day, days after the activity has been completed. As a consequence, the new garmin coach has been quite frankly useless because the information it is based on is rubbish. One more important issue I found is sleep tracking. An example is an 8 hour sleep being tracked as a 3 hour sleep, not just once! There are many more things I could say but hopefully garmin does something about this given that I just received a 4th update of the app in the past few weeks. I think they are trying. Not sure if it matters, but I have a fenix 7, and actually I found that often the information displayed on the two devices is very different. I do make sure to sync them more than once. Overall, right now, not only garmin is not being a positive influence on my fitness/training journey, but it's being a nuance more than anything. I hope this clarifies. Much love.
I just wish the cadence on the animation matched the desired cadence they want you to have for the training rides. Easier to see and then feel the cadence they want you to target.
An annoying bug I have is that even when I close down companion app, the loud noises from ride-ons still come through my phone really loud. I'm not sure how to stop it
Recently been having a weird problem with my GTX1650-equipped pc. It freezes the pc at the device pairing screen. A pc power off/on is only fix. Not expecting GPlama to know answer but maybe someone else has similar experience?
My steering on my zwift play controllers are broken. It's keeping me left without any input suddenly. Does someone know how I can fix it or just contact zwift about it?
That'd be because you randomly had a 20min average power value that told Zwift your FTP has gone up. Now Zwift checks all time lengths from 8min to 60min for those indicators of a new FTP.
I’ve been riding with one for a few weeks. Wahoo have an all my feedback on it. I’ll cover it when they start releasing updates that make it more usable (or at least as usable as their other bike computers). DCR has a good wrap up of the device.
I finally got Discord overlay figured out for our local Zwift group ride. Got RTX voice to mute the background fan and music noise so they can hear me clearly when I say "UP UP UP"! lol
I’ve had numerous conversations with Wahoo about it after riding it for a few 100km. As per the DCR review, it’s not ready. It’s missing features their other units have. The box photo of the unit with a feature it doesn’t have could be tested by our consumer watchdog body here in AU. That’s a huge concern. There’s a lot for them to unpack with this release. From the leaks, the claims made by advertorial reviews vs people who actually used it, through to the size/weight/everything. I’ll keep an eye on their updates. The first is scheduled in a few weeks.
Estimating your FTP by extrapolating **other 700k people's efforts** is one of the dumbest things they have done. What this method is essentially saying that everybody's power curve from 8 minutes on has the same shape 🙃🙃
Then dig into the papers used for FTP estimation. You’ll be surprised at how little the sample sizes, fitness status, and gender distributions were for those.
@@gplama Goes to show why none of them (TR, zwift etc) work for me. I'm a very anaerobic rider and any ramp test/automatic detection from max effort gives me a ftp 15-20w too high.

No. Ramp test is not accurate
Ramp test was 20w too high for me. Incidentally did the grade and it updated my FTP and aligned with Garmin's detected FTP.
Ramp is notoriously bad. Though by coincidence, accurate for me.
But I don't FTP test anymore.
Glad they fixed the drops multiplier bug. Was very annoying
Thanks as always Shane
This update solved my watt problems. Riding now feels much more natural!
This is not the Wahoo Element Ace I was looking for 😉

Decay in ftp is extremely important, you'll understand this after you train for a while.

A small drop in power over a long period of time will have very little effect on the average power.

I’m not sure why… but my two replies where I explain what happened are not showing any more… :(

Pick a route that includes it. Oh Hill No for example
back in my day we did ftp tests without these fancy algorithimajigs
