After years of having Garmin devices crap out on me and customer service to be every bit as shitty I really enjoyed switching to Hammerhead. Regular updates and enough features and a great map made for a solid experience. But over the years I would just rate the Karoo2 as fine. It does most of what I need. I am not overly dependent on my head-unit. However, when Hammerhead decided not to release a phone app that worked with the 2 (only with the 3) I decided that my time as a Hammerhead user has a shelf life. Companies that expect customer loyalty but do not reciprocate need to learn that this business model is a dinosaur. Yes, they want you to upgrade and that makes them bank ... but it is a disservice to your customer base to show them no respect. And that is Hammerhead. Probably will try the Coros device next. Looks great.
Great and accurate review. Encouraging to see HH updating the battery modes and CLIMBER features, as well as Field Views. I wish the BEEPER stopped deafening me and the SDK issue was reintroduced. Just odd that HH delayed this feature. Thanks again Shane.
Great update Shane. I recently got a new bike with Force AXS after having a Di2 bike which with a Karoo 2 running KI2 was perfect. The thing I miss most is the audio alert when the front derailleur is going to shift in the Synchro shift modes (sequential in AXS). I asked SRAM who said it’s not available but they will add to wish list. Given Hammerhead is owned by SRAM is disappointing a third party app outdoes them for features at this time. Other than that issue I do like my K2 even with the short battery life..
Nice one Shane… I loved my Karoo 2 but I ended up having to get a 1040 for 2 reasons - battery life and bigger screen. If Hammerhead released a version with a bigger footprint and battery , I’d be back on a Karoo in a heartbeat.
So, folks at Hammerhead choose Android as platform for quick and easy development but after 3 full hardware revision haven't yet implemented basic features like drink/eat alert, they released a pretty poor SDK in order to offload their work to indie devs and now have killed it because.... well, no reason we are aware of. As a Karoo 2 owner I'm pretty disappointed becasue it had all the potential to be on pair with Garmin, in terms of usability at least, but looks like they don't want/care of users request and don't want to give indie devs the ability to fix their units
To appreciate the data field alignment you'd have to have experienced the update before which they completely omitted any alignment and screwed up the UI. The last hero update was Climber on no route select. Since then the updates have been lacklustre and devoid of independent manufacturer 'uniqueness'.
I would like to see the follow up of the IGS800, and a shoot our of some similar priced computers. I had the original karoo, cracked the screen - and unable to repair.... gave up on the Karoo at that point.
Doesn’t sound like it’s market optimised to seriously compete against Garmin. I live in hope that some head unit manufacturer will come up with a cellular enabled head unit. It’d be nice to shed the weight of mobile. Great review as usual. Maybe a good idea for Hammerhead to seek your input, prior to market roll out
Karoo units previously had SIM card capability for data connections. eSIM would be the way forward for similar functionality today, although it does then get tricky with regional regulations.
