And from the HTC's financial state, the HTC One (M9) probably will be the last hoorah for HTC and i hate to see such a great OEM go down like that.... If i had the money I woulda bought a few just to up HTC's sales.... loved HTC phones since i first started using the HTC Diamond... the old Windows Mobile 6 brick of a phone... but a beautiful and pleasure to own phone back then....
better camera, speakers, processor (not ram surprisingly), bezels and on-screen buttons. its a better (and more practical) upgrade from the m7 than the s5 is over the s4. Edit: also, an sd card slot!
XtrAMassivE I would'nt care to upgrade from M7, though would've if I had the extra money. The battery life on M7 is good and I'm not having any problems, but would some extra juice. The swipe gestures look really nice, but I guess I can get them at XDA soon. Also, I love the look (except from the camera); what a sexy color and figure it would fit in my hands better.
XtrAMassivE i was just about to mention the same thing... removing the tactile buttons from the phone and having onscreen, does make that a waste of space... and does in fact make that phone taller for no reason what so ever...
I got it when it was first released.... I love this phone... Improved in every way possible.... I do notice a difference in the camera in day to day life... The camera is better... I recommend getting this phone to be honest
Nursafwah Tugiman not from what I saw in the review. Real optical image stabilization is far better than digital, especially in lowlight which is where this thing is supposed to excel. I got rid of my M7 and I won't be dropping the cash for this thing. HTC blew it by not upping the megapixels.
I just don't see the point in upgrading to M8 if you already own the M7. No image stabilization?? same-ish camera?? No thanks, I'll stick with my beloved M7 :)
You have a problem if you judge a cell phone by its camera. Buy a real camera if its such a big deal. Its a PHONE. Call quality, responsiveness, processing power, and screen quality should matter more.
THUNDERBOLT013 still doesn't change the fact that there's nothing really innovative that makes me wanna ditch my m7 for the m8. Same screen resolution (just slightly bigger), same ram, same-ish design (rounded edges?! wow, what a deal). Better off save my money for the next gen of phones as the current one is utterly underwhelming.
THUNDERBOLT013 Erm..not trying to be obnoxious here..but it's right there in the comment bro! "I just don't see the point in upgrading to M8 if you already own the M7" lol
The M8 is not really for a M7 owner it is targeted towards Galaxy owners that want a change from plastic or to iPhone owners who want something similar running Android.
some of the most comprehensive reviews I've seen, you really touch on all the hot buttons and give the information that the average Joe needs to know and can understand. Big props!!! don't change your review style, perfect!
Wow, this comparison is seriously the quintessential way of how every comparison should ever be done again! Great job MF! Fantastic production, thanks for including a bit of the street artist performing, concerts and audio are my main thing with phones, Nokia clearly strives to be the best in that department, but I don't think I could see myself leaving Android. The M8 sounded quite improved even in that brief snippet of live music, any specific hardware information? They had to remove their previous HAAC mics correct? What were they replaced with on the M8? Thanks again! Keep up the fantastic work!
If this phone had a proper camera there would be no competition so thank god it doesnt :D If an htc employee is hearing, good job guys you out-designed everyone. HTC One M8 is practically the best designed phone ever.
It has got the BoomSound beneath the screen which is 25% louder than the previous M7. There's a lot more tech running under the screen. Btw z2 has a larger bezels too.
You're so right, one thing I don't understand is why the removed the back button and menu button but left the HTC logo on the bottom, makes no sense, it makes the M7 look so much better and it's also not as big
You Micheal Fisher sold me on the Htc one M7 back then, broke but worth every bit of it.Now anguishing about the new one, awesome videos, awesome channel, keep it up :D
I got mine about 2 weeks ago. I have nothing bad to say about this phone. I've seen some people complain about the grip with the phone and the power button placement. I can grip the phone fine, it feels great in my hand. The power button I can reach fine, but maybe that's because I have big hands. The speakers are not something that you can hear well in this video- they are MUCH better in person. My only problem is that some games aren't yet optimized for on-screen buttons, so they don't provide a way to get back unless you open up Google, which you can do in games. Otherwise, I love this phone.
When is this phone coming out? It seems like a pretty cool phone. I wonder if the HTC one m8 model will be available in Verizon with their lineup of smartphones. Does you know what this phone will be made available in the United States? Thanks!
Couldn't they put HTC logo somewhere else and get rid of that bottom part of the bezel? Phone would be much nicer if it was a bit shorter and with less bezel under the screen.
The M7 and M8 are what got me interested in HTC in the first place... I know a couple of people who were still rocking both iterations years after they had been launched, and got a hands-on experience on what I had thought were the ugliest handsets around, aside from the sound capabilities...I was eating my words after that... The functionality of these devices were superb, and I found myself purchasing an HTC 10 shortly thereafter, which I am still using almost 2 years later...
I love the new M8, in fact, I'm considering it for my next phone but Gosh, that huge bezel with HTC's logo. It just doesn't make sense to me. Manufacturers use on-screen buttons in order to eliminate as much bezel as possible. What HTC did here is kept the bezel, got rid of the capacitive keys in favor of on-screen buttons and lost some precious screen real estate. The ending result is, less screen and bigger bezels. Exactly what customers DON'T want.
Lol, was just about to point out that the Excelsior should be NX-2000 not NCC-2000, then looked it up on wiki. Is it worrying I'm more interested in the model than the phone? :3
I have my HTC since December and I will keep it for a while. And I think the HTC one got better now. The only think I don't like is the round still, I wished HTC kept the same m7 style. Otherwise, is a great phone, stylish and unique. I still keep my HTC one m7.
I like the HTC one M8. I like the fact that it has better sound quality on the phone since I listen to music a lot and need something that I can use both in the gym as well as the talking in noisy areas. I like the fact that it has good screen resolution and that it compensates with it software perfectly.
To me, HTC's and Apple's phones are my favorite smartphones right now due to the premium design. I'm not too much of a spec person, but I'm very much a design person. As long as a device runs smooth and loads things really quick, I don't care what specific processor it has or how much RAM it has, for sometimes the over-powered specs never show. But the build quality of HTC and Apple are just amazing. As is the design and precision that comes along with the design.
Shout out to HTC for giving me reasons not to upgrade my 11 months old M7 for another three years. I'll wait on the M10.Hopefully HTC will still be around.
+Jessica Bobadilla they are so comfortable. And i thought the m7's design was a priviledge. The one series is about the only you dont need to upgrade, still have an m8s and have them samsung bitches lookin jealous
the only reason i have sold my m7 few months after byuing it, was 4'7 screen. personally i prefer 5 and higher. other then that ,- LOVED IT. it is a definitel my next device.
Michael, could you do a sound test to see whether the HTC One M8 is louder than the BlackBerry Z30 please? The Z30 is considerably louder and has more bass than the M7 so it will be interesting to see it against the M8. Thanks
I was about to get the M7 then I realized there is a M8. I think that HTC messed up and should've put a better camera on it, like the Samsung 13 gb camera. I also think that the shape is better in the HTC M7 but it is good that they moved the power button and added the swipe ability. Great video! This helped me finds new phone!
I love the square design of my blue M7, perfectly fast as well, seems to handle every intensive thing I throw at it. Camera is great too. Switched from Samsung and Windows phone, and this knocks them out of the park. I do use nova launcher though because I find it even faster and better than sense, plus the added customisation is a bonus
the cleanest UI out there. and if some of you don't know,- well now you know...not only it is fast because of hardware and software, HTC did it and they did it first. 46ms touch response. forty God damn six ms. no one came close. that is why it is so snappy and responsive.
I love my M7. I don't like the fact that they made the screen 5 inches and I'm not swayed by the dual camera on the back. I have not had a problem with it and I've had mine for a year and a couple of months. As long as it receives updates for Sense I don't see myself switching anytime soon.
I do not know if I will be making the switch to the M8 anytime soon. Some of its upgrades are cool but, not enough to switch. Id like to see the fingerprint or facial recognition software attached that would definitely be a dealbreaker!
Love the HTC. Good to see it back and strong. Hope people buy it. Too bad I'm a Windows Phone guy. If Microsoft would allow developers to skin over windows, it might be a true champion.
I should buy the new HTC One M8, coz I have already many problems with my HTC One X. one of these problems is having dead spots on the touchscreen. While there is another problem with the speed of the phone, it lunches the camera very slowly as well as much more apps.
the video from the camera wasnt very good but i think all the other improvements makes the new one a worthy upgrade. its also incredibly gorgeous. the photos it takes is a bit better than the original one though
Liking the new phone, hopefully Sense 6 will fix the purple hew issue some of us m7 owners are having. Wouldn't say the m8 has enough going for it to bother upgrading from the original.
I think that is a beautiful phone but not happy about that camera. Why go to all the trouble to add another camera on the back then take away the stabilization makes no sense to me. really like the sound. If I was going to get it I would get the google play edition.
I'm gonna stick with my M7. Once the new software comes along the feature set will be identical except of course for the camera which doesn't matter too much to me.
I plan on getting the New HTC One M8, why: because it really is attractive and all the cool specs. I don't know which phone I truly like, if its either Samsung's phones or HTC's phone.
I will buy the HTC One M8 if the Oneplus One has slow shipping or big flaws. The main cons with the M8 IMO are: only green/orange LED. The camera on the back has less pixels than the front facing camera and the place of the unlock button. And the fact that I will the extra camera if I flash AOSP
I agree; The M7 definitely had a spiffier case design. And what would posses them to remove the capacitive buttons? It's just wasted space otherwise, so even if you don't like capacitive buttons, it makes more sense to keep them. Not sure what HTC was thinking with that one.
agreed. they should get those again on the One Perfume, preferably a back button on the left and a menu button on the right with like, recent apps and other handy shit
I am delighted with the removeable SD card. My M7 crapped out on me and my photos were unretreivable. Now I can save images to a removeable card. Notice that despite my M7 crapping out I had no hesitation replacing it with another htc one. I love the phone. The feel and look makes it a pleasure to use everytime I pick it up.
I still like last year's One more. Just the look of it is better im my opinion. All that roundiness in new One doesn't speeks to me. And performance of M7 is still fair in day to day use. Gonna wait for the next One.
I was really hoping for a better camera... I want to see how this one performs. I'm waiting to see how the Note 4 is too. The Xperia Z2 is also a good option so it's hard to say
I really want the M8, but I'm actually holding out for the rumoured M8 Prime with the 5.5" display, 805 snapdragon processor, 3gb RAM and allegedly an even better camera. I need to see if this is actually gonna happen. If so, I want Harmon Kardon Edition if they plan on one.
It seems like a good solid multi-media mobile aside from the camera not being as solid. The large screen and big speakers make it appealing in those terms, but for me it is just a tad over the top in terms of design and skin. I prefer something more subtle yet unique and powerful at the same time, something more stock, whose features make true sense and deliver on their intent, so I will hold onto my Moto X. Moto's sound quality is crystal clear and and it is enough to meet my smartphone desires right now. However, I could see how others might be compelled. I also prefer the original HTC One design. This new HTC is big and manly looking, rugged.
I only have one disagreement. The M7 video sound recording does compress the sound more, but it is much more balanced than the M8. It may be due to the dual microphones on the M7 versus a single microphone opening on the M8. I've noticed my M8 sounds distorted when playing back high frequency recordings. My M7 would always level them out to get rid of the noisy unwanted distortion. But then again I am a musician and a deejay. I record videos of live music and parties on my HTC One, so the M7 compressing 3000 watts of ear piercing highs and thunderous lows is much more to my satisfaction than hearing distorted tweeter sounds from my M8 recording.
The looks of the M7 are way better in my opinion, I was planning on upgrading to the M8 this year, but the design made me change my mind, I ordered a Z2 Because it's more pretty than the m8 and Because the m8 did somewhat disappointed me, Because of the camera, the tall Phone without a very big screen and the z2 more pluspoints, of course the battery, Noise-canceling Headset and the waterproofing, I chose the Z2. I like Sense by for from any other skin though. I wish I could instal in op my Xperia Z2 and keep all of It's features.
Nice phone but am sticking to my M7 for now. That weird looking thing they adding to the back camera just makes it look way to awkward. Maybe in the future but M7 still looks better.
Im due an upgrade, from a HTC One X, and ive choosen to go to the one (m7) but then with only a week later, i heard of the M8's release, and waited another week, now ive got it coming to my door tomorrow, in gunmetal, and im very very syked indeed, should be a hell of a phone as a photographer it will be nice having a craft and arty camera, that bokeh effect from the refocus is right up my street as i favor fast aperture lenses on my DSLRs the boom sound will likely replace my Xmini capsule speaker ( :'( ) but thats not a bad thing having less to carry around! the memory card slot is a welcome upgrade, especially as im going from a 32gb phone to a 16gb M8 larger screen, sense 6 up from the 5 on the One X is a nice thing to look foreward to the new tap to wake, lift to ear to answer and wipe to resume functions are lovely to think of overall im very excited to recieve it! :D good compare, thanks
Logo should've become a capacitive homescreen button, and on both sides the multitasking and back button. And no image stabilization?? WHY?! But still very much in love with it :p
Honestly Im undecided between HTC M8 or the Xperia Z2....Only If the new HTC M8 had at least 8 Ultrapixels on its rear main camera then no questions asked that would be my next smart phone for sure. Have to admit I'm a bit dissapointed and thats why I'm looking at other options like the Z2 (never Samsung)....I've been an HTC fan forever but why cant HTC listen to their customers? They make it so hard for me to stay with them.
I'll stick with my rooted M7. Not enough to sway me even though I like the return of the microSD card. I don't think this phone needed to be any bigger than it was.
My only concern if the games will throttle badly like the M7 because playing Asphalt 8 for a good 20 minutes and the frame rate would start bouncing between 30 to 20 so far the HTC One didnt do that well in gaming in most high demand games.
Prior to the launch and the video reviews on youtube I was sure I was going to buy the M8, but now I'm not so sure. Yes, it is still the most compelling smartphone in my opinion, but I would really like to see if HTC will bring us a HTC One (M8) mini, with same specs as the M8 except for a smaller screen and maybe just 720p. If so, I would go for that one instead. Until then, I might just hold on to my Galaxy Nexus, although it is beginning to get a bit sluggish.
The m7 looks better.
Yes.
no.
Speak for yourself. (I know you did) But i think the M8 has many more advantages.
I'm talking about physical appearance. Not functionality. Although don't functionality is worse. I own both and prefer the M7 design.
yes. WAY better.
Skipping the M8 till the next successor, my M7 is still holding up quite well. Here's hoping they bring back OIS because that is very important to me.
i'll be waiting as well... but i've still got the One X.
Same here mate. My M7 is still doing well, though the M8 has some really compelling features
How the might have fallen
Did you do it?
No longer am I an HTC fan but I do like the changes that they've made to the new ONE. Nice
I'm only a fan of the build quality and that's it. I'm waiting on the Note 4.
Mario McIntosh just get the note 3, waiting for note 4 is a long waiting game.
Ba Shah I already have the Note 3. I love it. ;-)
Yup.. I have the white and black
Mario McIntosh XD
The previous HTC One seemed more compelling to me, I don't see any reason why would anyone upgrade it also.
better camera, speakers, processor (not ram surprisingly), bezels and on-screen buttons. its a better (and more practical) upgrade from the m7 than the s5 is over the s4.
Edit: also, an sd card slot!
yeah but is it worth it if you already have the m7? Also that bezel bellow on-screen buttons is just a waste of space now.
XtrAMassivE I would'nt care to upgrade from M7, though would've if I had the extra money. The battery life on M7 is good and I'm not having any problems, but would some extra juice. XtrAMassivE i was just about to mention the same thing... removing the tactile buttons from the phone and having onscreen, does make that a waste of space... and does in fact make that phone taller for no reason what so ever...
***** Onscreen buttons aren't a downgrade....go play with a galaxy or something if you feel as so.
Until I saw the camera I litterally thought this was the perfect smartphone that I had been waiting for
I stay with M7
I got it when it was first released.... I love this phone... Improved in every way possible.... I do notice a difference in the camera in day to day life... The camera is better... I recommend getting this phone to be honest
is the camera really good?
Nursafwah Tugiman not from what I saw in the review. Real optical image stabilization is far better than digital, especially in lowlight which is where this thing is supposed to excel. I got rid of my M7 and I won't be dropping the cash for this thing. HTC blew it by not upping the megapixels.
Nursafwah Tugiman I think the camera is absolutely amazing, obviously it has more limitations than others but its still on par with basic usage.
This One makes Sense.
Punny and true.
Yep ;)
galaxy has to take Note :)
sorry terrible joke
defc flores LOL
+defc flores galaxy also have to sort out their chocolate bars ;)
I just don't see the point in upgrading to M8 if you already own the M7. No image stabilization?? same-ish camera?? No thanks, I'll stick with my beloved M7 :)

So I guess it's true, Beats Audio is nothing but branding.
Yup LOL. Jimmy Iovine is laughing to the bank.
of course it was lol

look at the bottom bezel, so thick, they move the navigation button to on-screen but didn't cut down the bezel.
You're so right, one thing I don't understand is why the removed the back button and menu button but left the HTC logo on the bottom, makes no sense, it makes the M7 look so much better and it's also not as big
This two Buttons are now Touch . Thats stupid .
grayisagirl c they happened to need more room for the components.

Asen Georgiev
I dont like custom roms, also the stock conversions not always work perfect.

I was saying the exact same thing.
I was saying the exact same thing.
Thank you! Why does no one else notice this? It looks horrible. I like the way my htc one looks much better (original).
Timothy Zhu If LG G2 could stretch their screen from edge to edge with pretty much same internals so could HTC from speaker to speaker.
kara88bg So true!
The M7 and M8 are what got me interested in HTC in the first place... glad im not the only One. lol
By a hundred times. I love that chrome white finish.
Thisath Ranawaka The contrast between the white and black looks better, the edges are better rounded like that and the speakers are properly symmetric
they took a step backwards design wise. the old One looks cleaner, more modern. the new One looks... bubbly. like a car from the 90's.
Karly Johnston I love it ;)
Order My New M8 a couple of hours ago from Sprint. It's on the way,Happy Me!. Upgrading from Lg G2 which replaced My M7 Happy to be back w/HTC....

best phone ever made period

its worse than the first one ... so I'm not agreeing
first one is still better. better build and feel
Uwot Mate It's not better no matter how much you want it to be..It's not. M7 is still a great phone but not better than the new one..Sorry..
***** No one likes you, go away, shoo.
Is that a plastic coating on the front? The shot of the speakers looks like the holes are raised off the surface.
They should have kept the look of the m7 but with a bigger screen!

Old One's design is a lot better..
which one should i buy s5 or m8 any suggestion guyz
which is better? #thanku :)
I think I'm gonna hold on to my M7 this time next year I'm hoping for big changes in the optics department.
Lukas Kuipers
Exactly. The buttons have to go somewhere; if not under the screen, then they just end up wasting space on-screen.
How did you guys put review up so fast?
I am delighted with the removeable SD card. My M7 crapped out on me and my photos were unretreivable. Now I can save images to a removeable card. Notice that despite my M7 crapping out I had no hesitation replacing it with another htc one. I love the phone. The feel and look makes it a pleasure to use everytime I pick it up.
Have m7 currently, ordered the m8 and sent it back after really realizing it's not really worth it. I'll just buy an m7 black and wait till m9.
I'm staying with the m7 for now. The m8 is good but not enough for me to upgrade from what I already have
You are my favorite phone reviewer... Just love youe accent I i am Michael fisher and this is pocket now
I still like last year's One more.
For me the screen is most important, is the difference there big?
Fantastic versus!!! Thank you Michael.
The beats audio was just a sticker at the back of the phone to make it seem cooler... The new one sounds just as well and some say even better!
Pocketnow Dont u think that onscreen buttons are not that necessary they should have them at bottom so the screen space is not wasted.
I wish I could instal in op my Xperia Z2 and keep all of It's features.
will gestures like tap-to-wake-up make it way to the M7 ??
Nice phone but am sticking to my M7 for now. That weird looking thing they adding to the back camera just makes it look way to awkward. Maybe in the future but M7 still looks better.
Im due an upgrade, from a HTC One X, and ive choosen to go to the one (m7) but then with only a week later, i heard of the M8's release, and waited another week, now ive got it coming to my door tomorrow, in gunmetal, and im very very syked indeed, should be a hell of a phone
as a photographer it will be nice having a craft and arty camera, that bokeh effect from the refocus is right up my street as i favor fast aperture lenses on my DSLRs
the boom sound will likely replace my Xmini capsule speaker ( :'( ) but thats not a bad thing having less to carry around!
the memory card slot is a welcome upgrade, especially as im going from a 32gb phone to a 16gb M8
larger screen, sense 6 up from the 5 on the One X is a nice thing to look foreward to
the new tap to wake, lift to ear to answer and wipe to resume functions are lovely to think of
overall im very excited to recieve it! :D
good compare, thanks
Basically same thing it just captures more light
Basically same thing it just captures more light
Logo should've become a capacitive homescreen button, and on both sides the multitasking and back button. And no image stabilization?? WHY?! But still very much in love with it :p
WALLPAPER?
the just looks so massive because of the black HTC bezel plus the speaker bezel, very tall but sexy as ever.
Now M7 has Sense 6, and it's updated to 4.4.2. Your turn M8
Why do u have to scroll the app menu from top to bottom ?? I like to scroll it side ways is there a way to change it ??
witch one is better one m7 or the neww onee????
Honestly Im undecided between HTC M8 or the Xperia Z2....Only If the new HTC M8 had at least 8 Ultrapixels on its rear main camera then no questions asked that would be my next smart phone for sure. Have to admit I'm a bit dissapointed and thats why I'm looking at other options like the Z2 (never Samsung)....I've been an HTC fan forever but why cant HTC listen to their customers? They make it so hard for me to stay with them.
hey what lcars app are you using on ipad? :)
Anybody??
I'll stick with my rooted M7. Not enough to sway me even though I like the return of the microSD card. I don't think this phone needed to be any bigger than it was.
My M7 Is still great, also I got the new sense 6 update, it's just like using the M8. Not switching phone for now
My only concern if the games will throttle badly like the M7 because playing Asphalt 8 for a good 20 minutes and the frame rate would start bouncing between 30 to 20 so far the HTC One didnt do that well in gaming in most high demand games.
does anyone reckon its worth the upgrade, im not really a gamer and i barley use the camera
Some people say it's 32gb and 64gb only ?
This was a great HTC one review.
I bought the m8 and its amazing
i like the m7 design better but still, it's an awesome phone! can't wait to get my hands on it :)
M7 wins in the appearance apartment though.
Htc is the best!
I love my htc one m7 and will buy this phone soon
Prior to the launch and the video reviews on youtube I was sure I was going to buy the M8, but now I'm not so sure. Yes, it is still the most compelling smartphone in my opinion, but I would really like to see if HTC will bring us a HTC One (M8) mini, with same specs as the M8 except for a smaller screen and maybe just 720p. If so, I would go for that one instead. Until then, I might just hold on to my Galaxy Nexus, although it is beginning to get a bit sluggish.
Dream phone: HTC One M8, with the Note 4's camera, stock android, and a snap 805 or 810.
LG G4's 808 is better
Farhan Widyandhana The 808 is somewhat better at heat management but it is slower in performance than the 810.

This was a great production.
