***** well the phone itself is technically a bit smaller, so there needs to be a teeny bit more space to put things. It also has a 240mah larger battery. It's only 3 tenths of a millimeter thicker anyways...
The only reason HTC went *backwards* on technology is because people were too stupid to realize that a 4MP camera can take better photos than a 16MP camera if it has a better sensor. Samsung has been taking advantage of this stupidity for years. The number of Samsung fanatics who have made fun of HTC's and iPhone's camera for having a lower MP count... yet they never asked themselves why photographers don't prefer Samsung's camera. They weren't aggressive enough with their "ultrapixel" branding. Same goes for processor. Those who actually know how these things work know that a faster processor does not mean a faster experience... A car with a v12 engine can be slower than a car with a 4 cylinder... but people just want big numbers. Either way, the photos you take on on your phone are meant for social media and your phone, which don't need extremely big photos. For the resolution smartphone photos are viewed at, the M8 had the highest quality pictures. Samsung is simply trying to compensate for the lower quality by increasing the MP, which will work at some point, but they'll take exponentially more space on your phone. If you're at the stage where you need the higher MP, you probably already have a DSLR and would never use your phone for anything important. More MP are just bad for general consumers.
you have it backwards, lowlight is the ONLY thing the m8 camera is good at. that's what the ultrapixel was meant to do, it's only decent in daylight and cropping is complete garbage but the ultrapixel does what it's supposed to do.
I just got the HTC M8 and and have to say that this review is right on the money. Last years model is amazing and the camera is fantastic. I did think the camera on the Galaxy s6 was better but I did not think it was so much better that it won. I will say that the dual front speakers blow me a way and that is what won me over. I also though the speakers on the m8 were better than the m9. This is such a great phone smooth and the screen is beautiful the sound is amazing and I really like the camera. I also like the customization that HTC gives you really makes this you phone with little effort. I would recommend this phone to everyone. The problem is that the m8 really did't need anything. I am totally blown away by this device.
Not interested in either of these phones, I'm just here to listen to Michael. I could watch his excellent reviews and his versus videos for hours. He makes everything sound so much more interesting. Keep up the good work!
I find it amazing that even today I am yet to see a phone master the speakers like the M8. I've owned the Nexus 6, Nexus 5X and the Nexus 6p. I didn't realize how good the speakers were on the M8 until I purchased my mom one and tested against my N6p. Why can't HTC put the same speakers and audio chip in their new phones
Great comparison! Thanks for the side by side photo and video outputs of each of the devices. It's shocking that the One M8 has a better camera. The One M9's display also seems to lack the punch in comparison. The One M8 is nearly selling for half the price and it surely is a great purchase at the moment.
Who's with me, who loved the circular camera rig on the One M8? Even the dual cameras looked so sick. Like a perfect slab of gorgeous metal with two perfect circles. Now its a gorgeous slab of metal with an ugly, plastic framed lug of a square rig. It looks so out of place. It looks like it belongs on a plastic Galaxy or something.. Coming from somebody using a Note Edge. Perhaps the only quirk I have with this phone.
Majeh Of course I can, it looks fucking disgusting on a phone that has its entire selling point in design. You're not getting the best battery, the best display, the best camera, the best features or the biggest phone or the greatest anything... You're getting a lot of average or good things in a beautiful phone, that's what it makes it incredible. Sense is also one of the better skins, but that is preferential and arguable.
I love my m9 I've had it since it came out with no problems, the camera has gotten much better over time with updates to the app itself and software improvements, will most likely wait for the next HTC after the HTC 10
here's a tip for anybody with a scratched M8 camera. Apparently there's a film over the camera that scratches really easily. just take a drop of water and the edge of a credit card and rub against it until the film comes off. Worked for me ...same for the top camera too
m8 is the best phone in every departments thats ever been built and nothing can beat its legacy even after 3 and half years of super heavy use it still outperforms my brand new lg g6 and the m8 boomsound makes htc 10 boomsound sound thin and samsungy
Hmm. It seems that for every advantage the M9 has over the M8, there comes a drawback. Having seen the M9 up close already, it looks just as fast, fluid, sharp, responsive, and graceful as my M8, but taking the "Boom" out of BoomSound wasn't a great idea. I love having a phone that's loud and deep-sounding for all my media. Currently, I see no incentive to upgrade.
+Kyubey I read your comment. the thing that was wrong with it was that it was basically no improvent over the m8. I also said that the m9's speakers were absolutely fine.
Geezz, what's wrong with HTC, seriously? Can't they work out a good camera for phones? I can try to live with those big ass bezels in exchange for good sound quality, but a crappy camera is definitely a deal breaker for me!
it is a good camera. its no match for my s6 camera but its far from a terrible camera. if you dont believe me compare it to most other phones on the market and it should come out on top. if you take it off of HTCs terrible auto focus you can actually get a good shot. a friend of mine works for vodafone in the uk and he got a free one m9 from them. it comes with his contract. a new phone every year for free. he said the auto focus is the problem and ive seen that on review sites and videos everywhere. the problem i see is that most people are not camera enthusiasts. they dont really know what to do other than fiddle around with the settings for like 20 mins and then they can maybe get a good shot. HTC need to work on the auto focus and thats about it i think.
Pocketnow the scratches on your M8 camera is from a crappy protective coating that HTC used. Get a Q-Tip with some toothpaste and rub it off. Dramatic improvement in photos afterwards. Do so on the selfie camera if it's scratched also.
+Yujin J it's is better now tbh u are better off getting the m9 because the front camera is the best and has android 6.0 and will get probably 3 more big android updates so as for a future proofing get the m9
I've always been HTC, but I'm disappointed with the camera in this one. Not changing anything from the M8 and simply adding OIS with more megapixels would have done the trick. Samsung's S6 is taking my money this year.
+obi4214 I'd say so yeah because I have an HTC one m7 and take photos on that and the pictures are stunning. I think that the m8's camera is better in all aspects so I think the photos are probably great. Maybe look up some more UA-cam videos specifically on the camera as well though as I don't actually have the m8 yet so I'm not 100% sure.
im sticking to my m8, the fact that the new camera has more megapixels don't make it a better camera, one thing I really love about the camera on m8 is the refocus after the fact which m9 don't do
The scratched camera lense cover was not due to the hardness of the material rather than a coating that I could remove with a Q-Tip and toothpaste. Hopefully people will see this..
Had the M9 the least reliable phone I ever owned first one was exchanged within a hour of purchase, the replacement was glitchy as hell and was replaced as soon as as I could afford to. That being said said it was the best looking phone available at the time and nearly 10 years later still looks sleek and fresh. If the hardware was as good as the aesthetics HTC would probably be the third big player with Samsung and apple now
I got my self an m8 a few months ago and I honestly prefer it over the m9. A lot of the reasons I naught this phone were taken away on the new one. I'm not really a picture person so don't mind the one on this phone at all.
I have an M7. Planning to upgrade to either the m8 or the m9. pls which is a better overall phone? considering the cameras, too. The m9's video isn't that great
They need to bring the one m8 design back. Exaxct same design but 2mm thinner, closer to a unibody and in gunmetal with no brushing. Would buy even with a snap 636, I don't care. as long as it has a 5 inch screen, smaller bezels, capacitive buttons and the weight of metal, i'll sell my soul
I had the opportunity to look at both hands-on recently in determining a switch from Motorola to HTC... I settled upon the 10, and said goodbye to Moto, especially with the new Moto Z...
i'm glad i got the m8 so i can upgrade to the m10 instead of the m9. if i had an m7 i would think it's worth it but the m8 will still be amazing with sense 7 so i'll hold out for a year
Apart from having the front camera as a Ultra pixel sensor on the M9 the M8 is still better I think! They need to design a whole new phone now, the M8 is as good as it will ever get, maybe switch to an SAMOLED screen have a removable battery boom!
I've been watching and reading so many HTC One M9 reviews hoping to justify upgrading my M8 to it...it makes no sense to upgrade. Worse camera IMO since most of my pics are indoors or in the evening. And arguably worse battery life. So I'm going to the Nexus 6. I get to keep my same forward facing speakers, get QHD with comparable battery life, still a very fast phone, and camera is mostly on par.
So basicly: M8: Feels better, takes better video and photos at night, is just as fast and has a tinnier boomsound speaker? The fuck HTC? I was sooooo exited about this phone....
Arggghhh; if only they would've finally gotten a good camera. Everything about this phone is perfect to me; the camera is a dealbreaker though. I hope they'll fix the image processing with the final release :)
If you snap pictures where object is moving, than smartphones have shit cameras. I remember, 8-10 years ago sony made phone, one of walkman series with cybershoot. What cybershoot was good on moving objects but very slow, i mean i was waiting about 2-3 seconds till it snap a picture and also got only 3,2 megapixels. But picture was super clear. I hope they will develope cybershoot more and it will come soon on new smartphones, what tehnology was amazing.
I am quite disappointed. I thought the new camera will be better in all circumstances than that 4MP one. Turns out it isn't that much better. The 64-bit architecture is good, but I change phones annually, so aging is not a concern for me - I'm not expecting huge 64-bit only features this year from Android. I still have the One M7 and I love it, I think it's still the best HTC flagship ever made. Of course I can feel the older CPU now when playing some games, but for every other task, it performs no worse than the M8 my friend has. I really hoped for real improvement with the One M9, and the camera seemed to be that. Now I'm not so sure, and after years of sticking to iPhones and HTCs, I might just check out other manufacturers.
i really do not use the camera and do not use it as a parameter to decide between smartphones but to those who do - i think htc m9 is good enough for them. i like the design of the phone and it is good they did not change it. how do you make better than the best. coming from samsung fan.
i have a phone with all buttons on the right side of the phone and i pretty much hate this button layout. why dont they put volume buttons on left and power button on right
In every video of a dark metal HTC One M9, I am just like "Nah, not the best phone". But then when it is the light metal color, I always like it way better. Funny the way that works. (:
I am currently using a m9 after my pixel 2 xl was obliterated by accident, and i think it has aged very well, i do not miss my pixel in terms of speed, the pixel did have better camera and display, the camera on the m9 is just, meh, i guess it is good even compared to todays budget phones, but i still do not understand why did they make the camera worse compared to the m8
This is the HTC M8.5, barely an upgrade over the M8. It's a nice phone but HTC really didn't do much to make this a compelling upgrade. Probably saving all the major features for the rumored M9 Plus, kinda disappointing.
TBH, I never had a good experience with this phone. got it used in good condition, and after couple months it started having software issues with battery charge, lost it after an hour completely, the charging port broke and you had to move the cable around to make it charge (had that issue with multiple cables, until got one that worked, and the cable burned the port), and the last issue is the sim card slot, every time a phone was dropped, or shook, it stops seeing the sim card, and you had to press on the slot to fix it, or sometimes take the card out and back in, but if not for these issues, I would walk around with it, IDK if it's worth fixing it, it'll be couple hundred dollars. I'm gonna get a one plus 3. p.s. comment what you think of the phone, and did you have these issues
The boom sound is superior on the M8. I damaged my M8 and received the M9 replacement. The speaker sounds tiny with vibrations that distort the sound. I miss my m8.
The M9 is still much better than the S6 which goes to show just how little of an improvement the M9 had to make on last years model to blow the Samsung S6 into oblivion. HTC M9 = best phone 2015 - possibly 2016!
that's the reason why I'm still holding on my m8... my friend have the m9 you could really see the difference in the camera... though how many update m9 got bit I still prefer my m8... if you have an m8 still it's a great phone.... ooh wait I agree with Michael when it comes to its speaker m8 is for me as well is quite louder than the m9....
What I think should have happened was that they should have kept the ultra pixel camera but at 20.7 megapixel camera at the back also optical image stabilization a redesign on the body of the phone also a variant for those who wanted a QHD screen with a bigger battery finger print scanner and perfection would have been born
dude if they made it Bullet proof i would be all about it.. it would be like an M.R.A.P. phone. i would be down for that.. but as far as this video speaks it's not nearly enough to have me drop 650$ on a new cell phone when my M8 is still working just fine with no issues..
I don't get boomsound - why cant you just plug in some high end headphones for listening to music which will be far better than the phone speakers? Also, for whenever I need to listen to something on the phone, any speakers will do the job.
Can i use a tempered glass of an htc m9 and use it on a m8??? I ask because i have an m8 and i order an m9 tempered glass because it was on a very very very special offer but i dont want to open it yet
HTC is really just helping Samsung this year, unless they pull something crazy with the M9 Plus. Otherwise it's just going to make people's decision to buy the S6 that much easier. Heck, I have the Note 4 and I want the S6 after seeing the camera demos and the performance with the Exynos 7420...the black/dark blue one looks pretty sweet IMO.
I think that the older model takes way better pics. I think the phones look so much a like that the m8 is going to be the phone to buy when it goes down in price because the m9 is coming out. Both look like great phones
Being a Galaxy fan, i still loved the Htc one series. But this has really disappointed me. I'd give a 10 on 10 to HTC for not changing the design too much bcos the m8 was already so beautiful! But htc cud've improved on the other things. The 20 mp cam is worse than the 4 ultra pixel cam of the m8. :/
"The M8 Scratched up lens".... The actual lens is not scratched! Its just the protective coating that's scratched! Get some Brasso & polish the camera lens & it cuts the protective coating off, & the glass lens comes up like new!
I think that m8 is better because no other phone has double camera. Actually it's sensitivity is bigger because it's ultra pixel. M8 power button is more comfortable. M8 is a little more thinner. For me M8 is unbeaten for now. I wish next year HTC to beast M8.
In Canada the m8 is discontinued the m9 is $150 on contract. But I got lucky because they had 1 m8 phone left in storage so I got it for free on contract . so far so good.
I barely ever take pics. Once in a while at a event or something, but I would'nt just be strolling and taking out my phone for a pic. So... Ill take the M8.
vasu patel I'm actually giving my wife my Nexus 6p and I'm going back to the M8 frost silver with a beatle defense Supcase and CyanogenMod 13 installed with the pixel launcher. The phone is just so damn practical and is the perfect size. Not to mention the speakers are the greatest of any phone. Maybe in the future I'll test out the ZTE Axon 7.
What I find really funny is that everyone is so mad that the M9 is way better than the M8, and the camera sucks, bla bla bla. I'm over here sitting with a S3, and I'm just like everything is better....
This pretty much sounds like the m9 is the "s" model of the m8... Just, that camera comparison is plain weird... One wonders whether there is actual improvement at all or whether the camera is just different (and should be taken as is.)
Since Samsung decided to go icrap and go all internal battery... Why can't HTC just come up with a newer design and make it possible to remove your battery? That would make me stick with them more.
damn I really don't know which phone to take anymore :( I mean I love the HTC design and the software that it delivers. BUT! When I compare to the s6 I miss the OIS, fingerprint scanner to unlock, wireless charger and the s6 is 50 euro cheaper where I live. HTC made this choice just too difficult for me. If they just added wireless charger OIS and just a little better battery life I would have chosen the one m9 above all the others but sadly they didn't add it and made the choice for me and prob millions of others more difficult than it should have been.
Am I the only one who thought almost all of the photos on the M8 were better?
I did too. Honestly, I think a higher resolution Ultra Pixel camera with OIS would've done world's better than either of these.
***** well the phone itself is technically a bit smaller, so there needs to be a teeny bit more space to put things. It also has a 240mah larger battery. It's only 3 tenths of a millimeter thicker anyways...
Baptista 3:16 right? I think that the HTC m9 is a pretty good thickness and it's curved which is great for both aesthetics and comfort.
***** some people think the newer design is more comfortable and some think the older design is more comfortable. It's a matter of personal taste.
The only reason HTC went *backwards* on technology is because people were too stupid to realize that a 4MP camera can take better photos than a 16MP camera if it has a better sensor. Let me guess, Jaime is going to switch to the M9 and then back to the iPhone 6S again.
Benny Katz i thought he was using the Lumia 930 now
Benny Katz That's what he wants you to think. He's probably back to the iPhone by now.
Nope he said he's more interested in the s6 edge actually. He currently is using the note edge but really likes the new s6 version.
Hahaha hahah my same thought
Cmon Jaime... S6??? THAT piece of plastic garbage...?
m8 is a masterpiece
So the M8s terrible camera is still better at night and in video? What the hell HTC? What have you guys been doing for a year?
Agreed
WitnessG Who said the camera was terrible? A terrible camera would have be the moto x 2014
Imran Mohammed More like the Nexus 6.
you have it backwards, lowlight is the ONLY thing the m8 camera is good at. that's what the ultrapixel was meant to do, it's only decent in daylight and cropping is complete garbage but the ultrapixel does what it's supposed to do.
that's what happens when put so many pixels into a small censor. smaller pixels mean more noise in low light conditions.
Using a M9 Developer Edition at this date with AICP 14 (Pie) ROM as my daily... What a joy this is!

James Charbonneau - If you're into great headphone enhancements, the HTC 10, with its 24-bit DAC amp is a treat...
Great comparison! Thanks for the side by side photo and video outputs of each of the devices. It's shocking that the One M8 has a better camera. In 2023 even
They would not
awesome comparison between the two devices! always saying the TRUTH! this the reason your the #1 UA-cam reviewer when it comes to smartphones!
As always Michael Fisher delivers the best content on the market, both the comparison and the review we're beautifully made.
Keep it up Michael ! It was a very good comparison !
The M8 is still my all time favourite designed android phone. Fits so well in the hand and looks so beautiful 👌
dude, you make really good videos! I like the way you express yourself, thumbs up again :)

me: wait, WTF???
m8 dominator after all so people got it I even have an m8s
Lukas Kuipers what was wrong with the m9??? (Other than the camera and speaker?)
***** the m9 had amazing speakers? It was in about no way an improvement over the m8. Only software. And who wants to pay extra for that?
Lukas Kuipers you didn't read my comment correctly.
Other than the poor camera and poor speakers, what else was wrong with it??
+Kyubey I read your comment. the thing that was wrong with it was that it was basically no improvent over the m8. I also said that the m9's speakers were absolutely fine.

The colors seem a little more washed out on the M9, would you agree? I'm seeing a similar case between my E8 and M9.

06:19 That's one hell of a papercut.
Great review! Congrats!
Amazing as usual Mr Michael.. keep it up bro!
Should I get the m8 or m9? I'm only getting it for mp3 uses as I heard the DAC and sound quality is amazing.
I would go for M8, cheaper & better external speakers as per the review. I am also planning to buy this phone just for music.
+obi4214 get the m9 its got a really good camera
Khrystofer Ambriz Nope, it sucks in every condition where there isn't a lot of light.
Jack T thats true i like the sense ui of it tho its nice and snappy but to each is own m8 m9 as long as ur getting what u pay for

So glad I have an M8, I can still say I have HTC's best phone lol
Do u still have it?

I've always been HTC, but I'm disappointed with the camera in this one. Not changing anything from the M8 and simply adding OIS with more megapixels would have done the trick. Samsung's S6 is taking my money this year.
I will wait for the M10. Thanks HTC
Awesome Review by the way.
So, if you have an m8, like myself, don't bother swapping for the newer model. Thank you, Pocketnow.
im swapping for a galaxy s6 :)
Although we are all aware that the m8 has a AAA battery and a Nokia 6600 camera, I still love it for one thing..the front facing speakers.
im samsung users, im going to get a HTC phone, whicn one you will prefer m8 or m9+ if you just new in HTC ???
+obi4214 I would go for the m8 as it is virtually the same price as the m8s (in England that is) and is better in all aspects
+obi4214 I'd say so yeah because I have an HTC one m7 and take photos on that and the pictures are stunning. I think that the m8's camera is better in all aspects so I think the photos are probably great.
Just watching his review video after missing him a lot.😢😢😢
I've been watching and reading so many HTC One M9 reviews hoping to justify upgrading my M8 to it...it makes no sense to upgrade. Worse camera IMO since most of my pics are indoors or in the evening. And arguably worse battery life. So I'm going to the Nexus 6. I get to keep my same forward facing speakers, get QHD with comparable battery life, still a very fast phone, and camera is mostly on par.
Thanx alot . Ireally was thinking on this one
So basicly:
M8: Feels better, takes better video and photos at night, is just as fast and has a tinnier boomsound speaker? The fuck HTC? I was sooooo exited about this phone....
Arggghhh; if only they would've finally gotten a good camera. Everything about this phone is perfect to me; the camera is a dealbreaker though. I hope they'll fix the image processing with the final release :)
Well then, I guess I'm keeping my M8 for now.
6-8 ultra mp camera with OIS would have been a better deal. 20mp is overkill on a phone.
i wish htc one went with a 8 or 13mp ultrapixel with OIS, but im still using the m7 so this will still mean a nice upgrade for me
I don't know which to get for Christmas. Any suggestions?
***** I know. I can't help it! (:
Funny, I prefer the opposite. The gun metal one blends easily with cases or skins.
I am currently using a m9 after my pixel 2 xl was obliterated by accident, and i think it has aged very well, i do not miss my pixel in terms of speed, the pixel did have better camera and display, the camera on the m9 is just, meh, i guess it is good even compared to todays budget phones, but i still do not understand why did they make the camera worse compared to the m8
bought one m8 ,from eBay ,great phone loving it.
Arun Amarannavar enjoy it in my opinion the m9 is a downgrade and looks way to much like a m7.
I am still using htc m8 in july 2019
This is the HTC M8.5, barely an upgrade over the M8. It's a nice phone but HTC really didn't do much to make this a compelling upgrade. Probably saving all the major features for the rumored M9 Plus, kinda disappointing.
Hopefully the One A9 will be a bigger improvement than the One M9... I have faith in you HTC
+Allen Tom htc 10 REBORN!!
I'm gonna get a one plus 3.
p.s. comment what you think of the phone, and did you have these issues
tbh i think it's because you bought a used copy. btw you seem familiar with used phones how are used phones? I plan on buying a used phone.
Am watching this in 2016 I think the m8 even today is the best smartphone for its money am going to buy 1 today
What I think should have happened was that they should have kept the ultra pixel camera but at 20.7 megapixel camera at the back also optical image stabilization a redesign on the body of the phone also a variant for those who wanted a QHD screen with a bigger battery finger print scanner and perfection would have been born
i'll keep my HTC one M-8 theres not enough here to make me drop the cash on a new M-9 when my M-8 still trucks along like a champ..
what about if they made it bullet proof?
dude if they made it Bullet proof i would be all about it.. it would be like an M.R.A.P. phone. i would be down for that.. but as far as this video speaks it's not nearly enough to have me drop 650$ on a new cell phone when my M8 is still working just fine with no issues..
Clash Bluelight then i would grab one.. like a dang M.R.A.P. phone
Bryan Calhoun ok then! :D
Wow great review
I don't get boomsound - why cant you just plug in some high end headphones for listening to music which will be far better than the phone speakers? Also, for whenever I need to listen to something on the phone, any speakers will do the job.
Advise me guys, M8 Unlocked at $500, or M9 Unlocked at $650?
Baraa Dé m8
This video was definitely taken around back bay area, lol
I wish the m9 was more like the false renders. I was digging the speakers that resembled the nexus 9.
I'm wide-angle is more of M8. But M9 camera also beautiful
M9 has sapphire on the back camera ? didnt know that ! Thx Pocketnow
Which mobile should I go for m8, m9 or e9
Should I get the m9 or the desire eye?
I barely ever take pics. Once in a while at a event or something, but I would'nt just be strolling and taking out my phone for a pic. So... Ill take the M8.
HTC one M8 is it worth it in 2016 I am going to use it more than 5 or 6 years so is it worth it in 2016?
You might want to look at something of the Nexus variety.
vasu patel I'm actually giving my wife my Nexus 6p and I'm going back to the M8 frost silver with a beatle defense Supcase and CyanogenMod 13 installed with the pixel launcher.
So should I get this or the Galaxy s6?
The M9's camera is much better than the M8's. I've owned both.
Since Samsung decided to go icrap and go all internal battery...
Why can't HTC just come up with a newer design and make it possible to remove your battery? That would make me stick with them more.
I loved the One M8 now have U Ultra just miss the front speakers
Well M9 is out of the picture. Just need some hands on with the S6 to see if it's worth moving away from my iPhone 6
is it worth the extra £15 a month though?
damn I really don't know which phone to take anymore :(
I mean I love the HTC design and the software that it delivers.
I bought an HTC ONE M9 from Verizon. Had so many problems with it that HTC advised me to downgrade to the M8
