- Apple's M3 MacBook Air models are in stores as of today, so we picked one up to test it out, see what's new, answer reader questions, and determine whether it's worth buying or upgrading to.
The MacBook Air is available in 13.6-inch and 15.3-inch sizes, just like the prior-generation versions. Apple did not introduce notable design changes this time around, so most of what's new is on the inside.

God I am sick of "light editing" in reviews - I can do "light" work on anything, a 10 year old Gateway PC from Walmart can do light editing, this is completely useless to mention.
That’s true
I also hate the opposite
Doing heavy editing but you can clearly see , it’s just not as good as editing on a beefier machine
I remember watching some YTer editing videos on iPad Pro. Yes it’s doable but just watching them is already painful as it’s just not as intuitive , fast as on a proper machines
I mean I get there are times this is good such as portability , weight , or you just happen to be with only one machine
@@dandansfu you can do heavy editing on a M3 macbook air, don't fall for apple marketing about their "pro" machines being the only machine that can do "pro" application.
reviewers totally fall the the marketing ploy of "mmh yeah it's not a pro machine so you can only browse the internet probably", yeah no; the M3 chip is super powerful; you can do intense video and audio work on it no sweat, just pick the ram quantity that suits you.
I never said you cant, I was referring to iPad Pro which I also know you can do editing well, but just not the best choice if you are at home and have a great machine nearby :)

it has neural engine, don't know if that helps or if that's more for AI like on device Siri.
Thanks for the video. Can you tell me, which AdBlocker is the best to a MacBook Air M3? I use First AdBlocker, but I have heard so many different advice, so I don't know what to believe? Thanks.
This is the exact model I pre-ordered 😂 looking forward to when it arrives.
If I’m editing photos and videos from my drone, should I get the pro? Or would the Air suffice?
The M2 15 inch air I have it for over 5+ months now close to a year and it’s an absolute beast! I only maxed out the RAM to 24gb ram with 256gb SSD cause i don’t really see a difference with the speeds and I always don’t mind the waiting on the downloads anyway since I’m doing something else to keep me busy. Overall, I’m very satisfied with it! Use multiple tabs, have photoshop open while watching a stream or UA-cam, pretty much have multiple applications open and the 24gb ram REALLY helps to not wear out the SSD swap or MacBook itself, absolute powerful machine!
Just got mine today, it's just great the battery life lasts forever and it's so fast
Would it run Lightroom and Photoshop well?
Great that dual monitor support was brought to the MacBook Air and will be coming to the base m3 macbook pro. I understand the software limitations of not being able to run two monitors and the built in display at the same time, but why must the lid be closed? I own an apple vision pro and when I use mac virtual display it blacks out my screen but I can keep using the trackpad and keyboard. Why not do the same thing for the m3 air and pro? Black out the laptop screen if connected to two external monitors but don't require the lid to be closed. That way people can still use the keyboard and trackpad and don't need to get an external keyboard and mouse. Seems like an easy software change.
bought the 16 inch m1 max the day it came out. BEST purchase I've ever made, still blows my mind.
The intro is why I buy AppleCare+
Great video, although I would disagree about the storage. I have the 256GB model of a previous MacBook Air and I have never come remotely close to filling it even halfway. I think if you're not doing video editing, it's not necessary.
I have the base M1 air and it's so bad now. It gets stuck when I have 3 chrome windows open with maybe 15 tabs. That's a very normal workflow for me. But I think I'll wait until black friday or something and then buy 😢
just made the jump to Apple, hyped!!
Is the built-in microphone noticeably better than the M2? It's supposed to be better at removing background noise.
Yeah voice isolation is incredible
@@macrumors Does it work for all apps (Zoom, Whatsapp, etc.) or just for Apple apps like Facetime?
can you also tackle ssd life of macbooks? especially with ram swapping. which lessens the life of small ssds? esepcially if you use laptop to download stuff
Wait…why didn’t M3 pro fokes get that charging block?? 😩🤯
Should I upgrade from my intel mac mini?
Yes, you’ll have a much better experience.
I would wait. You might even get a bigger surprise in your experience if you wait.
A great review, I think the M3 chip with the expandable ram will have longevity & it should last three years easily.
should i get this? or get the m2 and save money? im only using it for college and plan on using it for alot of years after college is over
If you can afford the m3 do that if you’re trying to use it for many years though if you can’t I wouldn’t sweat it. M2 should still last nearly as long
If you are going to have two… I could surely use one 😏
How are the thermals? No fans would definitely slow down the air wouldn’t it?
I've still got my 14" MP Pro M1 Pro. 16/512. There's no reason to upgrade, at all.
Thanks for telling us.
At least half the nation wanted to know if you personally plan to upgrade. Possibly more than half.
Cool. Which nation?@@DerrickW30
Most important question for me is whether the m2 will be able to run Apples upcoming and future AI. I like the improved mic on the M3, improved gaming (ray tracing etc), double WiFi speed, AV1 support…
Will stick with my M2 air thanks
Is chip performance throttled in it like in earlier models?
It’s same chassis so yes
@@aimmlegate I think so too, just need someone to confirm based on testing.
I just upgraded to the 15 inch M3 from a 13 inch M1 and the difference is huge.Definately worth the upgrade for sure!
why not the base m3 mbp 14" gosh I'm in love with that one, I've got my m1 mba since m1 release and the battery just hit 79% and I water damaged the screen but it's still better than windows laptops in battery and equal in display
Is it worth upgrading?
When is it faster than a M1? When opening apps?
When playing back video? When photoshopping? When editing video? Is your battery still good? You need it professionally? If not needed for work to earn moeny with, then I don't see it fit to throw money into appels throat. The same counts for the M2. Even less though.
I am using an MBA M2 16gb and 256GB SSD. I am using a external SSD off-loaf work.
test out the hardware ray tracing compared to M2
Completely unrelated to MacBook's what case are you using for the iPhone?
Not a case but the leather magnetic skin from nomad!
Your case looks silver from the way I saw it but according to the website they only stock it in two colours
@@macrumors
the 15'' air m3 and 14'' pro m3 weight almost the same , very hard choice
Does anybody know if the M3 Air is more scratch-resistant & Finger-proof resistant than the M2 Air??? My M2 air scratches SO easily & shows finger prints too much.
It is, they changed process and it still shows fingerprints just way lesser
We want a 256 vs 512gb internal storage speed test please
Please add the 1TB model to this test. If it's 5000-7000 it's worth the upgrade
@@monicam8408also between M2 and m3
What about the throttling under heavy use that has been noticed by other youtube channels?
My experience is that thermal throttling is easily avoided by placing it on a simple usb powered cooling pad. Mine has multiple fans and keeps it cool under heavy loads.
Benchmarks show that the Air is even faster than a Pro.
FIx the light in the studio... its dark
I am a software engineer using a base model M1 air and it is sufficient for all use cases other than having two monitors. I cannot imagine the performance difference between m1 and m3 being worth the cost
Same. I also use displaylink for multiple external monitors and I run Ableton. I have 8gb ram and can open files larger than 8gb. These reviews are completely absurd consumerism propaganda.
There is no justification upgrading from m1 to m3. That is geek nonsense. Do not upgrade any M series yet. If you are on intel yes.
Plus, wedge design is better 👌🏼
If you want the new design, obviously there is a justification
Or go out and buy an m2 at an insane discount cometh this November / December if you want the bigger screen like I do. Cuz I’m going blind. And refuse to wear glasses. lol
absolutely
@@raiwet if you're the kind of person who likes to throw cash out of the window to get the shiny new thing, why not
If this had a 32gb RAM and 8TB configuration this would be an instant buy for me. Yes I know, the Pro, but I want this form factor
😂😂
I would so much want the Air with a mini-led screen. I don't understand why they refuse to make one. I would be willing to pay for it. I want the form factor and the lightness of an Air but with a fantastic screen. I don't want to go up to a heavy Pro model just to get the better screen. I'm just a normal user and don't need all the pro stuff. However... I want a great screen. Why Apple? Just charge us like you do with all other products. Maybe it would make the Air heavier or a bit thicker... is that why they won't do it? It would still be thinner and smaller than the pro though.
The Midnight color is 🔥
All the talk about fingerprints is ridiculous. Wipe them away as needed. A very easy fix!
Apple needs to stop trying to sell people hardware with ridiculously small storage. Storage is NOT expensive anymore, and there is no excuse for it. It seems to me that they just want people to pay for Apple cloud storage or pay more for a larger, more expensive model computer.
Greed
8:30 - Maybe the similar result in SSD speeds between M2 and M3 are due to the M2 being 512GB or above. If it was the base model with 256GB, it would`ve been 2x slower than the M3.
The base model M3 Air with 256GB SSD uses 2 nand chips and is just as fast as the 512GB model.
@@brachiator1 That is true. But its worth mentioning because in the video they were similiar in results because the M2 wasn`t the base model that is with one nand chip.
The most disappointing factor for me is that the 3nm chip didn't really bring any radical improvement...
Do you know what they can do next? Make the screen detachable and like or exactly as an iPad. And leave the keyboard base as a computer that can operate as a computer without a display.
13” MacBook Air vs 14” MacBook Pro coming from intel??? No photo or video editing, websites, email, spreadsheets… Also, if you had to choose one upgrade from base, ram or ssd?
I still think that for most people with M1 the upgrade is unnecessary, if you do some very GPU/CPU demanding tasks then you probably already have the Pro. For everything else M1 still performs very well. I would only upgrade from M1 to M3 if I needed to upgraded RAM and storage cause that's Apple for you.
The M1 variant is still great to use. Dont upgrade for now.
Depends whether you want the larger screen and new design.I upgraded from an M1 to an M2 when it first came out as I was tired of the wedge design. No regrets,it’s a great machine.
I disagree on the 256gb commentary. As a UA-camr, you're dealing with large files and such but the "average joe" doesn't have all those heavy files in their machine. 256 is more than enough for 90% of folks buying an Air. If this were a MacBook Pro video, that would be a different story.
come on Apple make some Product Red Macbooks.
👎👎
counterpoint: always pick the smaller ssd and use external storage; don't waste your money. you can't add more ram later but for the insane price of the upgraded ssd you can get at least 2 TB of fast external storage.
Counterpoint: 256 will eat into your memory due to memory swap on the single NAND drive
@@macrumors nope nothing will eat 256 gb of swap memory, only dumdums will buy an upgraded mba, they are trying to take a poney to the race track and think that upgrading the ram will make them win
@@macrumorsnot sure I follow; how do the swap eat into the RAM? isn't it the other way around? anyway I have a M1 so dual nand if that change anything
You missed completely the MacBookAir existence. It was the design. From the beginning it was the design. Always underpowered yet a sales performer. Killing that off is a mistake.
I disagree. It was a tired design that had been around 16 years.
I am not happy with the camera notch. I which it was removed from this version of macbook.
I rather just buy a Pro laptop than an Air version
Not good value. Laptops these days must be at least 512gb SSD storage minimum. Especially for its price point.
I miss the obnoxious glowing apple logo.
The MacBook Air is dead. This is just a MBP base model.
Nah. Still sells.
