the very first image you show after talking about the cloud tank is actually from a cloud tank, but a 1965 light-art piece called OPUS 161 (I think) by Thomas Wilfred.

Just throwing things to CGI is partly why films suck today. People really don't have pride in their product and it shows in modern filmmaking. A lot of the cloud effects in those 80s films are living art and far exceed anything CGI can come up with.
Yeah done in CGI now and they do not look organic Because of that fact.
