2022 was definitely the year of the comeback, with Brendan Fraser, Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan all deservedly picked up Oscars, after spending years out of the spotlight.
@olipeters5802 I think the message of the Whale is horrible too. The guy was a scumbag in the film who cheated on his wife with a student and stopped talking to his own kid and you’re meant to feel sorry for him because he eats himself to death
Toni Colette was so amazing in Hereditary. For most of the film, you feel so much grief and terror FOR her, then in the last act, you become terrified OF her!
Michelle Yeoh’s performance in Everything, Everywhere, All At Once was my absolute favorite part of the film. Everyone in the film did fantastic, but there was just something about Yeoh’s role that made me so ecstatic whenever I saw the movie
EEAAO is the last recent movie that made me feel any sort of life inspiration. Most other movies in recent recollection were a mix of cookie cutter plots, explosions, bland/edgy dirty jokes, forced romances, or predictable twists and endings
There was something deeply unsettling in that character, and despite Gyllenhaal being a very recognisable face, you keep forgetting that he’s the actor behind the character. Incredibly well done, and so, so spooky.

You could’ve done a two for one pick and did Paul Mescal and Frankie Corio in “Aftersun”. The father/daughter dynamic between those two felt natural and the subtlety in Paul’s acting was phenomenal. Another person I wanted to see was Steven Yuen in “Burning”
Both the girl and the father in ”Aftersun” should be mentioned. So natural, you forget it’s acting. Really moving. All my tears watching that. I really loved for instance Toni Colette in ”Hereditary”, amazing movie, but somewhere in the back of your head you know it’s a movie.
I would also include both Rooney Mara and Cate Blanchett for their performance in Carol. For me it's one of the best movies of the decade and both performances were subtle, hipnotizing, elegant, heartwarming and very powerful
I’m glad it’s a bit of a sleeper indie hit, but in another era that movie would be just so incredible massive. An absolute masterpiece of art with perfect casting and performances.

Simons - Whiplash. & Joaquin Phoenix - Joker
THANK YOU for acknowledging Toni Collette! She gave a jawdropping performance, i was disgusted by the lack of recognition for her at the Academy Awards.
Gary Oldman as Sirius Black in the Harry Potter Franchise. There is just so much about that man's performance in those movies - especially in Prisoner of Azkaban - that amplifies and increases my love for that character. There are especially two statements that he made, that are not in the books, that I love and quote whenever I can: *In the Shrieking Shack:* "I DID MY WAITING! TWELVE YEARS OF IT! IN AZKABAN!" *At the Clocktower Courtyard:* "It's cruel that I got to spend so much time with James and Lily and you so little. But know this. The ones that love us never really leave us. You can always find them, in here." Tell me those two moments don't define just what kind of character Sirius was, how much he suffered and still loved his friends and godson. And the way that Gary Oldman portrayed all of that was *magnificent!*
I like that so many of the performances on this list were NOT the ones that won the Oscar and in some cases didn't even receive a nomination! Two others I would have liked to see on this list: Michelle Williams for "Manchester By the Sea" and Andra Day for "The United States vs Billie Holiday."
Thought we would expect: Ben Affleck or Gal Gadot (Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice) John Cena (The Suicide Squad) Tom Holland (Captain America Civil War) Paul Dano (The Batman)
I'm glad that you didn't always go with the eventual Oscar winner in some of these cases. Performances like the ones in Tar; Tick, Tick, Boom!, Nightcrawler, Hereditary, Promising Young Woman, and Marriage Story are just as, or more, impressive than some of the winners.
Great list. But there’s one key missing performance. Paul Mescal in Aftersun. To me, that is the greatest performance I’ve seen since Marlon Brando in Streetcar Named Desire. And I don’t say that lightly. Considering Joaquin Phoenix is constantly turning in s tier performances what feels like every 2 to 3 years. Matter of fact, even tho they have different acting styles. He’s the only actor I’ve seen that has the presence of Brando. The pain that he’s able to show in the character’s restraint. Aftersun to me, was the best film of 2022. And the best film of the decade. And you just can’t have a top 20 performances of the last decade without Paul Mescal in Aftersun.
