    I wanna see a 400 crank (4.000-inch stroke) in a Street Boss 351W, using Cleveland heads and 351W rods with Boss 302 pistons.

      You can't use a 4.00" stroke crank, 5.956 length rods and boss 302 pistons with a 1.53 compression height. The 387 he used stock 302 pistons with a 1.605 compression height with the 5.956 rods and 3.85" stroke crank. To use a 4.00" stroke crank you have to use a 1.280 compression height piston and a 6.200 rod length.

    Apparently the 351Windsor is still a very popular choice for rebuilding and also stroking.
    I have 2 of the earliest 351 W , they are complete motors.
    One came out of a 69 XR-7 Cougar , the other had just been pulled out of a 69 Mustang in a salvage yard complete. I paid $60 dollars for Mustang 351W. It had been junked because it was smoking, especially at start-ups. When l opened it up the insides were very clean, no sludge. The bores weren't worned . l couldn't hang a nail on bores. The piston rings were in very good condition, all bearings , cam, timing chain were in great shape. I was kind of confused.
    I then pulled the heads apart. Lo and behold! All of the valve rubber seal shrouds were broken and falling apart.
    I found what was causing the smoking! I have big plans for the 351W.
    On the Cougar 351W, l bought the complete car (39K mi.) in 1970. The car was a total loss rear ended collision. I paid $150 for whole car. Took the motor, transmission and put it in a 65 f-100. That truck was fast, if l could get it to hook up. The truck is gone but l still have the complete 351W in my garage .
    There is a difference between early and later 351W s. Slighly shorter and alot more metal, especially on the bottom crankshaft webbing. If one puts them side by side one can see the dfference. The 351 W is a stout motor. Great for stroking.

    I cannot thank you enough for these videos! I swear you are the only one that seems to be discussing motor building. I haven't built a motor in probably thirty years. I had an '86 T Top GT with a 351 in the early 90's and I regret ever selling that car. My current foxbody is an 88' GT convertible and I have the itch to build another motor likely next year along with beefing up the AOD (I know.....I know) I looked for over a year here in Florida and upgrade the ring & pinion as well. Between your stroker motor videos and all the information comparing the 302 and the 351 I have been absolutely stoked to the upgrades and not sell this car. It's been a regret for a long time. You're AWESOME

      As far as roller lifters ?

  • @robertwest3093
    @robertwest3093 Рік тому +2

    Also, talking about the nice bore this block has. It's a shame that Ford didn't decide to use low tension piston rings from the beginning instead of in the mid 1980s. With those engines a rebuild usually just needs a quick hone job. The older 302 engines that used the thick 5/64 piston rings would show as much wear in 30,000 miles as a low tension ring engine shows in 150,000. When rebuilding the older style 302 you were guaranteed to need a overbore.

    Thoughts on flotec heads…..i see they come with 1.94” intake and 1.60” exhaust……..those would work on the small 3cc valve relief stock pistons on a 1996 bronco 5.0 motor?? Im only asking cause i dont wanna waste time and money on the e7te heads….afr 1341 sbf heads are also same small valve heads and are specifically made to clear fatory small relief pistons….i like the afr’s but the combustion chamber is 64cc which will get me in the high 8’s low 9’s for compression…if i go with flotec they have 58cc chambers and should put me in at around 10.15:1 compression give or take depending on head gasket size……i know the flotecs are chiniusm and im ok with that …im not trying to make over 400hp….im building this motor for my 15 yr old son for when his 289 in his ‘67 mustang goes night night…..with after market heads and roller rockers im guessing the factory pushrods for the stamped rockers and roller lifters are no longer the correct legnth…..

    Those heads have good looking combustion chambers. Just know you render those chambers useless by not setting proper quench distance with those “0.060” + mls head gaskets. If you have zero deck height use 0.035” - 0.040” gaskets and a gasket bore that is exactly the same size as the bore. Proper quench deters detonation and allows you to run some extra compression. It’s more likely to detonate with 0.060” gaskets at lower compression than 0.035” gaskets at higher compression...

      If you do 351C, make sure you use a deep 7 to 8 quart oil pan. Those heads can hold almost 2 quarts each at high rpms. You also need to provision the oil drain back in the front and lifter Valley also to aid in oil drain back.
      Don't mess with the oil bypass and restrictor bull$hit. The issue is having a stock oil 5 quart oil pan with 4 quarts in the heads. Dry locking the oil system is the real problem.

      Pull the engines. Regasket the entire engine. Drain the old oil. Then with the distributor out, prime the oil pump with fresh proper weight oil and hand turn the rotating assembly. This will allow oil to the bearing surfaces.
      If the motor was basically a fresh rebuild or completely new, break in oil after following the first steps mention before. Then drain and add synthetic proper weight oil.
