I bought a $250 Nest camera 7/8 years ago and had an AC plug professionally installed my attic above my porch ceiling. I also paid for the Nest subscription to receive 5 days of continuous cloud storage. A couple of years ago, Nest changed the recording requirements by having the camera only record when it senses movement. As a result, the camera no longer functions as it originally did based on my purchase. Later this year, they decided to increase the price from $60 to $85 per year, I called Google support which took forever to get ahold of a support person to claim my camera isn't functioning as it intended from my first purchase and explained the problem, they said sorry you can't return the camera per our terms and service. I did not agree to the new terms, so I shut down my Nest subscription. Consequently, I upgraded my network to a Ubiquiti system, discarded the Google camera, and replaced it with a Unifi camera system that records data locally without requiring a subscription. We own nothing when we buy physical or digital products from Google, and this practice should be illegal, especially when hardware is involved.
"sorry, you can't do that due to you accepting the original terms of service."
"we can do whatever we want because we retroactively make you accept the new terms."
absolutely mind boggling that our politicians haven't put a stop to this tech and financial R A P E.
@@TryPuttingItInRice They only care when it affects them or their immediate family.
I absolutely don't want to victim blame, but honestly we could all see this coming, especially with how gaming went down then with "pray we don't alter the deal further" live service nonsense. 10 years ago I wanted both a security camera (mostly to watch my cat breaking stuff) and something to control my central heating system. Nest wasn't bought by google yet so I bought both a Nest thermostat and a camera, but quickly returned them once I found out all the "cloud" garbage and endless license agreement nonsense that came with it and bought a PTZ ipcamera that could just rtmp stream video on the LAN, setup a NAS that could re-stream it over the internet (with a dedicated separate physical network so it can't even snoop around mine) so I could watch it on my phone while away and forgot about the whole network enabled thermostat controls.
I guess I just put a lid on my drink so I couldn't be roofied because my completely local setup still runs fine to this day.
In the grand scheme of things, be thankful that this lesson only costed $250 and whatever you paid in subscription fees, some people are completely invested in an entire ecosystem with thousands of dollars of stuff and the cost of switching over to another system would cost another pile of money.
Don't think for a second unifi won't require subscriptions sooner or later. When competing with cisco they got a lot of work to do before requiring subscriptions would for them. Though as soon as they are large enough fees will come in. Their Access Control and IAM services are already rooted in a subscription model.

I really love the fact that I had a reupload of Linus' Video from a super small channel in my recommendations, just a few hours after watching this :D
Linus' response video was also good, epic DBrand sponsor.
Linus: "What's the link"
Guy in back: "FuckUA-cam"
Linus looks at camera: "FuckUA-cam"!!!
Man, yall are going to fall right in line when Linus eventually says UA-cam is bad, come pay 10 bucks a month on MY streaming website! It's different, I swear.
@@kepler656 Whaddya mean eventually, bud. They've had Floatplane for yeeaarrrssss at this point.
@@kepler656 Because it is different? Also the price depends on which creators on that platform you support. They all charge different subscriptions.
Other Channels are reuploading His video like crazy, the message is out they can't stop it.
Thanks for calling this out Louis. Always appreciate the perspective.
With Every video this guy is going more rogue. You can feel it.
Yeah, noticed that in the last year or so with stuff like game cartridge dumpers, hacking tools, and many digs at Nintendo.
Hes got that almost andrew tate look.
Give it a year and he's going nuts.
I'm sure it was a coincidence. After all, Google's whole thing is "don't be evil"!
...wait. They got rid of that _how long ago???_
It was nice being recommended this video one last time. Rip fam.
I saw the notification when the video was uploaded and ignored it... Now I'm curious, and trying to find a re-upload to watch, Streisand effect is powerful indeed
I guess this is why he pushes Floatplane
Yeah.. I bet the kickbacks from the traffic this will cause are ganna be pretty sweet...
Floatplane is effectively their failsafe. It used to be they used vessel, but when that shut down floatplane was born. Its a bit more akin to patreon really.
It is partially true that Linus Media Group (LMG) is funded on UA-cam ad revenue but that isn't their majority source of income anymore as far as I am aware. They did a video back in 2020 about their financials and demonstrated the adjustment as they've grown, and back then only 26% of their revenue came directly from youtube. Granted, a large chunk of change came from a byproduct of doing youtube videos - in-video sponsors and projects. But I have a feeling that if LTT was kicked off the platform for some reason, they'd see a large influx of people to FloatPlane which would more than compensate the amount of AdSense revenue they currently make. And those were just 2020 numbers; None of this is mentioning their current prospective projects, a big one being a real brick-and-mortar facility for badminton and LAN parties.
TL:DR they were probably hurt/insulted by the strike but not terribly concerned internally.
I see a beer bottle in Google's future.
And Louis delivering it to the top Google brass, dressed up as the Sheik, but with an Italian accent. Checks out.......😂😂😂

*The one containing liquid with a bit of cloth hanging from the mouth?*
my favorite part is how the videos they have that essentially tell you to pirate content are perfectly fine
but specifically the one talking about adblock and UA-cam alternatives gets a community guidelines strike
I sent UA-cam feedback telling them I'ma send all my friends who work at tech shops a DRM free copy of said video (via LTT's FloatPlane, of which I'm a member; and which has no DRM)
Do YT videos have DRM? Never came across one.
@@rexsceleratorum1632yes, they do?
UA-cam videos don’t have DRM. I have thousands of them backed up.
This is why I get kinda mad when I see these sites saying they have a "partner" program.
A partner is someone you work closely with and trust, someone you'd tell if you had a problem with them.
But UA-cam/Twitch/whatever are more than happy to tell people "come stake your lively hoods on us"
And then just leave people in the dark and kick them to the curb whenever.
As soon as the desktop version of Grayjay comes out I'm in. I don't watch anything on a phone or tablet.
I only watch YT desktop because I have a handy mute button.
Linus doesn't always get it right, but when he does, he *really* does
I would say he gets it right most of the time and when he doesn't he tries his best to make up for it, and I would say he's generally as successful as it is reasonable to expect of someone who has much more to worry about than their own personal gain
Louis, you’re the shit too! You are responsible for making us aware as consumers, we can and should be able to fix our own devices and not add to the waste of the world.
Grayjay.. huh... sounds like something worth looking into.
"must be somebody misunderstand" 😂😂😂😂. Gold. Absolute gold
@7:06 -- rumble has the video.
Also Floatplane!
Isn't Rumble some super far right extremist site? Probably shouldn't promote that garbage.
Rumbles full of neonazis as well and is overall a bad product.
Thanks!
I will die on the hill that ad-blocking is not piracy, it's self-defence, but I'll give Linus a ton of respect for this video. (I also 100% called this and archived the video preemptively, just in case. lol)
Wow self-defense is such a great way of describing it. It admits intent in the structure and shape of a lot of the internet.
Who knew that *leaving the room* to skip an ad was piracy! /s

@@VeintiunoLavanda-qb9iy I can, not to this platform though, realistically. Got a suggested platform?
That's an amazing way to put it.
I don't know why people hate Linus so much, sure he might say something about your favourite phone or company which you might find offensive (cause offending people is so hard these days) but he's honest and when he IS sponsored by someone to take about their product they very clearly mention its a sponsored video unlike MANY "Tech-Tubers" who pretty much make glorified Ads.
love it, now people are reuploading the video. i've seen at least 4 channels have it up
It's my screen, if I don't want something to be displayed on it, it's well within my rights to block it.
that is exactly what the W3C says too
@@tcscomment I've never heard of this organisation before. Thank you for this.
That logic works until you are using a service funded by ads. Frankly I think adblock should become far more common along with simply denying service to people who choose to use it. The existence of both would encourage far more reasonable ad usage.
Not if it is paid by these elements you want to block. If you paid for the service, then you'd be right. Also this goes both ways, you're not entitled to something and the other side is not.
It's like bringing your own drinks to a bar.

Long gone are the days of *Trip To The Zoo.*
3:51 That reminds me a bit (although less drastically) of a false copyright claim by "JASRAC_CS" on "Wet Hands" by C418 in a video in and about Minecraft on my channel - even though you are allowed to use it in Minecraft-related content. When I refuted, with the comment that Minecraft's music is allowed to be used in Minecraft videos (I didn't even edit it in, the game just played it and my screen and audio capture captured it), I got an email fifteen seconds later, stating that a manual review has been done and my video breaks the copyright law. And the video is almost half an hour long, plus the transfer and update rate delays I'm pretty sure the "manual" review was sone by a computer that just automatically says "You're wrong" to any request.
Wait, my toothbrush is listening to me too? I'm never brushing my teeth again.
Louis Rossman your passion for your causes is admirable.
good job man!
Welcome back from such a long break
I remember talking with you a while back. I won’t divulge what we talked about because you asked to keep it private, but it’s cool to see that you give credit where credit is due while still being critical at other times
This seems illegal though? What term could they possibly say he broke for promoting this??
For saying Google bad
Yup companies can do what they like - and so can we.
Evan Edinger watches Louis 😮
I believe they categorize it as promoting piracy, which it's going to be hard for Linus to argue against, as he has outwardly argued the same thing about ad blockers in the past.
Ad blockers are against UA-cam community guidelines so promoting them in videos is going against the guidelines and in the terms of service. I'm pretty sure somewhere it says if you breach the guidelines that video is liable to be deleted (It obviously doesn't say it like that but something along those lines)
Thank You, I have been watching your videos for about I think about half way through 2021...please do not stop what you are doing.

Now Linus shall enjoy a 3 month of demonetization for sure because of this unfair strike.
