How a Car Braking System Works: ABS, Traction & Stability Control Explained

- Here's how your car's braking system works to stop your car to a halt!
The braking system consists of the anti-lock brakes, traction and stability control and electronic brake force distribution system. The major components include the brake pedal assembly, master cylinder and brake booster, ABS motor / actuator, brake caliper, gyroscope sensor for stability control, a steering angle sensor and a hydraulic / electronic network to connect them all.
When the brakes are depressed, braking force is transferred from the pedal assembly to the booster. A valve inside the booster shifts vacuum from both sides of the diaphragm to one side, giving assist to push the master cylinder. The master cylinder consists of two sub pistons for redundancy, each operating a diagonally opposite wheel on the vehicle.
Hydraulic fluid is pushed through to the ABS actuator, where it its release to the individual brake calipers is controlled. If the yaw sensor or ABS sensors detect vehicle slippage, it would appropriately engage the ABS motor to generate pressure far greater than a driver could with their foot through the master cylinder. Solenoids in the actuator would then direct or pulsate the brake pressure going to the appropriate wheel.

where do you get the manuals from
the two gears are different, one has 21 teeth one has 22, this means the phase between them will change, this is needed because each magnet sensor can only tell 0-180 degrees or 0-369 degrees, but the steering wheel can turn multiple times, i would love to know how many teeth on the main geer

there's more to them. the new toyota tacoma higher trims have a brake motor instead of brake booster. it applies the brakes for you with inputs from the toyota TSS camera
@@hostilityy a lot of new cars have that feature. It will be standard soon enough. I dunno about it using a motor, or camera though. Pretty much everyone uses a sensor either behind the bumper cover or behind the rear view mirror to detect mass and engages the ABS pump if it feels you are about to hit the mass it has detected. The abs pump has just as much braking power as your brake booster, but response time is much faster than human input.
Now that you explained how the braking system works thoroughly, there are still many motorist out there who doesn't know how to apply the brake pedal during emergency situation. I like to mention to the viewers that when you want to stop the vehicle completely in an emergency situation, steer the car safely and apply the brake pedal as hard as you can regardless the pulsating feel of the brake pedal and let the ABS system stop the car for you. Nice tutorial.

@@dmr9042 Yeah sure! You will basically face hardware and software challenges. On the hardware front, you will need wiring harness from the ABS variant, wheel speed sensors and toner ring installation, hydraulic routing changes. All of this is quite difficult to do. So even if you somehow do it, you will need software calibrated for your specific car, which is even more difficult. On top of all this, the expense involved for all this is sky high, you could probably buy a used car with ABS in those costs. I would not recommend you to do all this. Swap your car for an ABS one if you could.
Hands down the best video explanation of this system. This is why I love tear-down videos the most. Different learning strategies for different minds. I first started dissecting mechanical and electronics, way back as a little kid in elementary school. (Much to my Mom's chagrin! 🤣) But now at 48 years old, she appreciates my insight into solving problems.

Love watching your content. I was basically a self-taught mechanic until the computers came about in the late 80's and early 90's by doing exactly what you show....pulling components apart and seeing how they work. I also started an apprenticeship as a mechanic and found it the best way to apply theory from the classroom/textbooks into practical. Some of the best mechanics I know are not the best when it comes to writing or spelling, but put a car, truck, mower, tractor in front of them....you will always learn a bit more about each model and some of the quirks from some manufacturers/makes just due to experience. Also, your brother needs more underwear so you can borrow it more often :)

Question: how does the engine maintain the vacuum in the brake booster?
The intake manifold is usually below atmospheric from the valves sucking in air when opening. The hose connects the vacuum booster to the intake

I had a good understanding of the ABS including how the computer obtaining signals from the AC Volta w/sensors and the solenoids energising/deenergising to release pressure on the brakes and continue the process as long as the b/pedal is pressed and released etc.
Your pull down & cut away method of explaining this system is brilliant and explained the actual working of the ABS unit, only thong missing was the little accumulator reservoir inside the housing

Really like the content, also at 12:48 the two magnetic encoders are no for redundancy but they are here to get the absolute position of the steering wheel because those 2 gears have prime numbers of gears between each other so that you can calculate the exact position of the steering wheel by comparing the two values of the encoders, even if you make multiple turns of the steering wheel, quite an elegant solution
