This guy is a amazing guitarist. You know you’re good when you’re able to add some of those hammer on notes between chords while staying completely on beat and sound good. Truly a jem
Not to mention he was blind. I was somehow related to Doc my grandma kept telling me about when they would come to Doc's house and listen to him pick and sing. I never got the chance to meet him as my side of the family had some sort of falling out with the main group.
I've come back to this video time and again over the years. I would've killed to be there that day. Stacy, you are sure lucky to have had such an experience
I can't Thank You Enough Doc ! What an Incredible talent You are ! Forever In Your Debt & Forever Your Apprentice ! You have brought so much joy & happiness to us all - especially to us guitar players!
What's your relation to Doc? I was always curious. I gotta tell you, everytime I come to work in Deep Gap, maybe a few times a month, I drive around all day with him playing. He was great. I'm always happy about the one time I seen him in Charlotte. Sadly, it was his last show in Charlotte. I kept a recording of In the Pines on a cell phone now for many years... Love all these old videos
I am curious to know about the origins of the additional verse that Doc Watson does. No other version of the song has that verse so I am assuming that doc wrote it?
I was sitting by the road in black-jack county, Not knowing that the Sheriff paid a bounty For men like me who hadn’t got a penny to their name And they locked my legs to 35 pounds of Blackjack County chain. All we had to eat was bread and water Each day we had to build a road a mile and a quarter And a black snake whip would cut the back of any man who complained But you can’t fight back wearing 35 pounds of Blackjack County chain. And then one night when the man was sleeping We all gathered round him slowly creeping And may God help me to forget that night in the cold cold rain We beat him to death with 35 pounds of Blackjack County chain. And now I am a free man and I am thankful I have nothing but the scars around my ankle But most of all I glad that a man will never again be a slave, To the black snake whip and 35 pounds of Blackjack County chain

What a beautiful song, shame he did not ever publish the recorded version. You were so lucky to know him, may god rest his soul.
Man, Doc’s been 100 since the beginning of March, it’s hard to believe how fast time can go. Rest in Peace Doc.

Wow by FAR the best version of this anywhere
That was awesome. Such a pure setting. That’s when it’s genuine. Thumbs up 👍
This is so precious to see, Grandma Ruby sitting right beside him, so it has to be 1999 or earlier.

Only 9,000 views? Has the world gone mad? Obviously it has. All the museums in the world couldn't hold anything so great.

There was an extra verse in there, the third verse..I have never heard it...this is an amazing recording!
Extra verses always seem to appear in the Doc Watson versions
Thank you for this
Holy shit!
Such a simple song became such a not simple song as soon as doc played it
Yep its all in the right hand

Sounded as good at home as he did on stage

Guitar work reminds me of towns van zandt
Other way around amigo
The way it should be now less crime
What was Doc like, Stacy? You play great, by the way
Thanks. Doc was a kind and generous man. He never met a stranger and he loved to pick and sing. He loved his family more than anything.
