I don't know why more people aren't playing G&Ls. They pretty much smoke Fenders, and they're a Leo company too. I own 3 G&L basses - a 1980 L1000, ASAT, and a L2000 Tribute, and they're all fantastic.
I think Fender people prefer the classic AlNiCo P and J sounds, Music Man people also have a specific sound in mind, and both groups tend to be very brand-aware. And the majority of the rest is either looking for a more modern take of the Fender formula, or they are going for a completely different modern design. G&L just sits somewhere in the middle. I always liked them, but most of their basses just didn't convince me 100%, even though they have an incredible value. Most of the time, I prefer AlNiCo pickups, no matter if P, J or MM. But the MFD humbucker in the StingRay sweet spot sounds awesome! I loved the L-1500, and maybe this one is even better! This pickup has enough power to keep the bass passive, and I like pickguards. I'd also consider G&L's Fender-style basses with traditional AlNiCo pickups, I don't need the Fender name on the headstock and I appreciate little improvements here and there.
Thank God, after some months saving money, I went to get it today. I had been looking for something versatile, simple, but good. This machine just blew away my expectations. It's a complete monster haha. The hambucker is aggressive but neat, and the slap in this bass is at another level. Very thankful with the Lord for letting me buy it. I had a rehearsal of around 6 hours today and was able to use it. It's on another level. Really thankful and exited for this piece!
That split-coil mode sounds like an aggressive early-50s P-Bass whose pickup was moved slightly closer to the bridge, but not as close as a Jazz Bass bridge pickup. Really cool sound.
Some Japanese basses 80s like my Aria RSB Standard have a P pickup closer to the bridge. But I have to say that on mine, the pickup sounds pretty dull. I know that pickup position can sound killer, so I'm going to replace it. Hoping to get something similar out of it!
Ive had mine for about 6 months now, amazing quality for the price. Leaves me with a smile and makes me want to practice. Mine weighed in right at 9 lbs
I've had mine in white since March and I dig it a lot. It's very fat and sounds incredible through my Superbassman and Genzler 410. Perfect for that grunge tone.
I played one of these the other day and REALLY liked it - so tempted to buy one... but before this I really thought I wanted a P bass. I played the Kiloton next to a Player Series P bass, switching back and forth between them, and the P bass kinda sounded wooly in comparison, plus the Kiloton was easier to play - I'm so confused. The Kiloton was very fat for a passive bass. Augh, I just want all the basses. Can I let go of my P bass romance for a Kiloton??? I'm not sure if the Kiloton looks as cool either - yes that's definitely important.
The SB-2 (Or SB-1) is probably the best option for G&L P bass styled Basses. The pickups ARE HOT. Loudest bass I own is a SB-2. The MFD pickups are NUTS
There’s no Tribute version, but my American L-1000 is basically a super-P bass, with the mfd pickup up in the p bass position. The OMG mode switch is crazy FAT. First bass in my life that I’ve ever dialed the bass knob DOWN on occasion lol
Just got my G&L Kiloton Tribute yesterday and I am stunned by quality and sound, very beautiful Instrument! Highly recommemded! One of the most comfortable necks I have ever played.
I own a Kiloton , I've been playing it for a while, also live . I also play a P-bass on gig . Well i play both , for the more hard rock i play the kiloton . The cut tru with the kickdrum i very good . I go for the bite in split position , but i boost the bas on EQ a bit , i miss some low end her . Goes well with distortion or bass Bigmuff try that . But the bass cant do it for all tracks my goto bass will allways be a P-bass .
@@IvanBassist Like your reviews. I am looking for a 4 String Bass ( under $800 ) - Any Input? ( Fender, G&L, Sire, Ibanez, Music Man, Fujigen, Yamaha ) - even a Short Scale? I need a Great bang-for the money?

Great demo!! Great bass!! I have 3 G&Ls (2x L2K fretted and fretless, and an LB100) LOVE EM ALL!!. Did that bass drive your amp to clip much?? Mine have gained so much thud over time and some amps just can't hang!! Hence I love Mesa Boogie.
Hi Ivan, love the killer groove at the start of your review! Any chance you could do a tutorial or do you have tabs you could point me towards? Many thanks man, keep up the excellent tutorials 😎
Thanks, Chris! I appreciate it! I write all the intro songs, but do not have any tabs. I’m seriously considering releasing a bundle or something because a lot of people ask for this. Stay tuned and stay safe!
Respect ✊ It’s just such an awesome bassline, love how meaty & fluid it is. That would be very cool! I will keep my eyes pealed but for now try & learn what I can from your intro. Stay safe too man 👍
After owning an Irish Ale, I have gone for the White Alpine model for a GAS attack. But I don't know if the basswood is going to be nice to me. I have had several basswood basses and all of them have ended up being sold.
The Kiloton Irish Ale sounded amazing, but I never liked maple fingerboards. And the Irish Ale + Maple gave an aspect that was too "low cost". So I sold it.
Can you make a video comparison between Kiloton bass and SB-2 bass? Since you already reviewed both basses, which of them would you recommend more? Thanks! ...and great review!
Hey Melo, unfortunately i can’t because I don’t have the basses with me anymore. They were sent for the test. I personally would pick the SB-2 because I’m a P-bass fan and those MFD pickups have a great punch!
Hola Luis! Yo no soy muy fan de los bajos tipo music man. Me gustan mas los precision, pero Flea y Tim Commerford usan bajos estilo musicman para tocar rock y funk. Si pueden funcionar bien

Hey man thanks for a great review. I'm looking for a new bass. Tired of getting disappointed with the fender stuff. Because of this review( you played it with a pick rock style) I'm gonna order myself one of these. Plus I subscribe to your channel.
John Klecker I used to own the D-800 Plus version. Recently sold it and kept the WD-800. The D800+ was great, but the WD has a very nice midrange that i like better
t is really a pity the don´t make anymore something like GL El Toro from the ´80, what a great GLbass. I´m really disappointed with all new stuff. If you find one, don´t hesitate to get it. The new versions of the GL sound metallic and to hard, not any warm tones at all, sorry.
I’ll have to disagree. All my three US G&Ls (LB-100, JB, and Matador) sound great and are extremely versatile. You can find clips of them on my channel
Thanks, Steven! I understand your point of view, but this bass spoke to me as a solid pick bass, which is why I did the intro like that 😊 There’s fingerstyle playing in the middle of video where I go through the tone samples

I agree. I wasn't even aware of how good their instruments were before I started doing the demos, and then I was pretty blown away by the quality

Something to to with the harsh sound of their active circuitry.
