The development of primocane-fruiting blackberry cultivars opens the door to a longer blackberry growing season and expands viable blackberry production areas. John R. Clark, Distinguished Professor of Horticulture and Director of the Fruit Breeding Program for the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture, has spent more than 20 years developing commercial-quality primocane-fruiting blackberry varieties.
In this short video, Clark shares some of the history behind primocane-fruiting blackberries, describes their challenges and benefits, and gives a brief overview of some of the most popular varieties.

I just got into growing blackberries last year, and I have to say that these improvements and the work that the school has done to create these new types of plants is incredible. Fantastic work! This type of thing is greatly underrated in the modern world.

The Prime-Ark(s)® are an amazing breakthrough. I have some 45's and Freedom's ordered for this spring. I'm transitioning from Prime-Jan® and Prime-Jim® to these new varieties. A thorny floricane I grow with some, again-some, success, is Kiowa, here in Zone 5. The berries are spectacularly huge with delicious flavor. I would love to see an improvement on that as well, in terms of hardiness and production.

Prime Ark 45 is a prolific producer, sweet and great flavor. Mine is loaded this year. The Ponca doesn't have half the fruit it put on last year. Freedom isn't producing very well this year either. But they are year old plants. I had an acre of Ouachita one time ,no comparison.

i grew thornless in my garden. had a lovely patch about 25 feet square. second winter my wifes horses looked at the green leaves still clinging to the vines, pushed down the fence and ate stalks and all. killed the entire patch. however the wild thorny ones in the pasture are never touched. what do you have that grows well around Elk City , Kansas and can survive a horse attack?

Hey Dr. Clark. In the San Diego area, 3 miles from the Coast, (zone 10a) I have done well with Prime Ark 45. The 2nd year crop early in the summer has been the best. The leaves tend to curl, but it does not seem to be a problem. Lots of tipping helps production. I did not do well with Prime Ark Freedom (just one plant). But, I have done very well with Prime Jim- plants grow well and very productive- both summer and fall crops. It seems the berries just take a little longer to ripen. Regards

I can't figure out which Prime Ark blackberry would be best for Phoenix, AZ (about 300 chill hours, zone 9B with summer heat up to 120 F). I'll be growing in a big pot and can provide a good amount of shade. At least one farm in this area is successfully growing a Prime Ark cultivar, but he doesn't know which one. It is thornless, so that narrows it down a bit.

With careful management and the proper climate conditions, Prime-Ark® 45 can produce a spring crop of floricans berries and a fall crop of primocane berries. @AginArk  3 місяці тому

From our fruit and vegetable extension specialist Amanda McWhirt:
"Blackberry shoots removed during tipping may be rooted if there are sufficient number of nodes (4-5), but be aware that this is not a typical means of plant propagation for a commercial setting. Buying high quality transplants is preferred. For use in the home garden these tippings could be rooted with high humidity and high indirect light.
Many cultivars have plant patents that prohibit the sale of propagated plants without a license."
