This works on other varieties as well. I have several unknown floricane varieties at my house, and at some point in the summer I take the primocanes and trim the tips off so that the rest of the summer and fall they will grow laterals. Then the following year, those laterals make more laterals, which produce tons of berries.

Thanks to you I pruned my wild blackberries this year. Can`t wait to see the results next year. I pruned the tips, and have been pruning the branching tips. Freezes damaged a lot of them here but there are several types that continued blooming. Some climbed up in tree branches and are very high off the ground out of reach.

Great reminder. We did not prune ours appropriately last year. This year we’ve been pruning as you mention. (~waist high planted in ground)

I bought my first blackberry (Navaho) early spring in a 1 gallon pot. It had a few berries on it. I transplanted to a bigger pot, and new canes started growing like crazy. Now I have green berries and more blossoms 😊. Later in the year, I'll prune as you suggest.

Navajo blackberries are not primocane blackberries so I would just prune them like i would prune any Floricane.
I hope to have a video up next week or the week after that will show how to prune floricane blackberries.
I already have one that I did earlier last year or the year before if you want to search for it on my channel. But, they do prune a little bit differently than what I do in this video because they will not make fruit on this year’s canes. I don’t think.

@texasprepper2 I listened to Dirt Doctor the 18th Sunday, he had a guy from Summit that sells the BTI mosquito dunks. He said he used earth boxes and made sure he put pieces of dunks into those boxes.
Do you do that as a normal practice?

You are correct. There is more bad info than good out there. Proof that in the Information Age, not all information is good information. Just fyi, fruiting at the terminal end is a well known and written about trait for all primocane blackberries (and black raspberries as well). Also, the primocane fruiting trait was not developed by Dr Clark. Primocane fruiting was discovered in wild blackberries in Virginia. The trait was then breed into tame blackberries through the work at a couple different universities.

It’s my first year having these primearks and was thinking I would cut them down after the fall production only to be able to protect them easily. Trying to cover all these canes just wouldn’t be fun. I live in SE Texas so not sure when the fall production will end but I guess it’s a wait and see.
Nooooo.
The canes you cut down will be where you get your spring berries from.
Only cut a cane completely out if it has produced berries and has died. It will be very evident that they are dead. They get brown and dry and brittle. Don’t cut out (completely) live canes. Yes, you can prune them… But don’t cut them completely out.

This is my first year having prime ark freedom. I ordered them online and when they came they each had 2 leaves and were about 2 inches tall each in a 1.5 inch peat pellet. Now they have grown a lot but no berries.
They are still pretty young. Unlikely they will grow berries this year.
As it cools off this fall, you may see a bloom or two on the growth you already have.

Commercial growers have been recently taught by the folks at UofArkansas to prune at 12-18” using the RCA Trellis system. This is to create far more laterals at the base that fan out up the trellis.
I would like to see some videos of that just for my own understanding.
Maybe it’s only for commercial Blackberries.
I just really don’t know.

Hi Alan, your videos have been so helpful for learning about blackberries, so thank you! I was hoping you could help me make a decision. I just bought some Prime Ark Freedoms and don't know whether to plant them now, or wait until after harvest in the fall. They're in containers, which I wish were bigger. If I plant them now, will the shock affect the harvest? If I wait until after harvest, will there be issues with getting them to establish, affecting next year's harvest? I live in Vista, CA, so the summer temperatures here only peak in the low 90s.
I’m not sure about your climate, so I can’t comment for certain, but… If I were here in Texas, with the heat we have, I would wait till fall.
I would keep them in a semi-shaded area. They DO need sun, but full sun, at least in Texas, would probably do them in.
I’ve done that before when I was propagating and they lived pretty well all summer in pots. But, you will have to keep them well watered.
But, if you DO plant them now, make sure they are irrigated well, and get watered nearly every day during the summer.

Just planted 20 Prime-Ark® 45 Primocane Blackberry in my wicking tubs, really hoping for some beautiful blackberries this year. Fingers cross that the TX summer doesnt get too crazy, or I'll have to break out the shade cloth
Blackberries love the heat, but when they are young heat, can be a problem.
So yes, watch them closely. Shade cloth might be the ticket as hot as it looks like it’s fixing to get.

I am in panhandle Nebraska. I have had my blackberries now for 8 years, one plant, but I do not recall what variety it is. I have not really pruned mine except by vehicle or lawn mower but instead allow my long canes to root once it hits the ground as it bends. If given the summer the old canes do sprout leaves and will shoot off laterals as you called them and have given me berries. Usually I don't see flowering until July and ripe berries in mid Aug, giving me around 20lbs. Usually we get frost at Mother's day and the end of May but not this year. I have flowers now!!! I should see ripe berries here at mid July 😃. I have no one else is my area that I know of that grows blackberries to ask, how many berries do you, have you harvested off one plant? I will try clipping a few of my main canes this year and see what that does instead of letting it root. Thanks for the video!!😃
Poundage of production depends on so many variables... and I've never really weighed my harvest, so really not sure
I would think... one plant can produce a gallon or 2 under the right conditions, maybe more... just not sure
What part of Texas are you growing these in? Have you noticed any heat damage?
I have not noticed any problem with the heat, or the cold from growing these blackberries in tubs.
As a general rule, blackberries thrive in the heat anyway.
I have laterals on my Triple Crowns 5 to 6 feet long, should i prune these lateral back?
I would, though I’ve never grown Triple Crown. If it was me, I would print them back to about 2 feet long.

We were blessed to have had a plentiful crop of Prime Ark berries in May. I have followed your pruning suggestions and now have a decent crop of blackberries on my primacanes. They are just now ripening, but the dad gun squirrels are breaking the canes and stealing the berries before we can pick them! Any suggestions? Our blackberries are in our backyard in about a 12x24 section of ground.
The only thing I can think of is bird netting…

Doesn't look great, but a friend of mine keeps them out with chicken wire.
thanks for the video, very informative and insightful. was the reason you pinched off the newly grown primocane is to encourage lateral growth, right? so why not encourage it again by cutting back the laterals? yes, you've lost the fruit on the terminal ends of those laterals but you've multiplied the number of laterals by cutting them and allowed for a second wave of laterals to form. was this your strategy because you know the fruit wouldn't be able to form due to it be too late in the season or any other reason?
The main reason I pinch off the cane initially, is to manage the height of the plant. If they get too tall they can fall over and break the cane.
The reason I don’t snip off the laterals anymore is that I’m waiting for them to fruit, and then I still have months and months of growth time for them to lateral themselves AFTER they fruit, and I cut them off behind where they fruited.

@@BIGALTX I understand. After you enjoy the fruit and cut back the laterals, does the new growth eventually make a second harvest on those primocanes or just vegetative growth? (I guess it depends on the weather of that specific season, but what happened in your climate?)
Yep, depends on length of growing season. Once it turns real hot they quit blooming. Some of them will start back in the fall when it cools somewhat
@@BIGALTX it makes me think that in my region (Zone 11b - in Israel) maybe I should cut the laterals again (unlike your method), encourage vegetative growth on those 2nd time-cut primocanes, avoid the scorching summer sun on those blooms, and maybe in September-October I'll get that primocane harvest.

You might want to try both methods on separate plants and see which one does best.
Do you not have issues with the blackberry’s roots freezing in winter in them pots or do you move them in and out every year
The roots don’t seem to mind at all. It got down to -5 Fahrenheit in 2021. A lot of the canes were damaged but the roots did not seem to be damaged at all.
I don’t do anything to protect them
@@BIGALTX that’s awesome I have some prime ark freedom that I got as about 4” plants this year and they are now about 3’ tall and I have not been able to figure out a great spot to put them so I am probably going to put them in pots after hearing this . I am very surprised though at this I would have also thought the wicking tubs could cause issues in freezes if the roots had made it all the way down to the reserve and the reserve freezes

No, Quachies are not primocanes. They are a Floricane variety.

Since I live in Maine, is this demonstration for shorter growing season where I live.
I'm not even sure you can *GROW* the Prime Ark Freedom berries in Maine
I think it's too cold there
Not sure if *any* Primocane varieties will do well in the far north states or not
Check with your local Ag Extension agent for berries that will do well in your zone.
This pruning demo is for Primocane fruiting varieties only.

I haven’t had the travelers in several years. They just did not make it. Did not do well for me at all.
I do have the Ponca berries. They are the ones in the orange tubs.
Do you spray for pests?
Not very often.
I did spray the other day, but really, don’t think it was necessary.
I usually spray maybe once a year for pests. I do spray fungicide, once or twice a year… Or at least try to.
Alan, I have 6 PAF plants. The squirrels have torn up my plants this year. Also, my berries are bitter, are yours that way ( tart) or are your berries sweet? What is the taste for PAF berries? Please advise....😢
PAFs are sweet, but not the sweetest berry

I have never heard of a blackberry bitter bug. I’ll have to look that one up. Obviously, I have never done anything about them because I don’t even know what they are. 😳
@@BIGALTX I probably should have used the far more common name for the bug. Most people call them stink bugs. They make the berry taste horrible.

I cut my prime ark freedoms to the ground every year in Wyoming. The canes cannot survive our 20 to 30 below temps in the winter, so we rely 100% on primocane fruit on new growth.
If you live in zone 6 or warmer, there is no reason to mow to ground

@@BIGALTX boysenberry is a cross between blackberry x raspberry x logan berry x dew berry....and the Loganberry itself is a cross of RB and BB...apparently boyseberry used to be more popular in USA than BB and RB, like back in the 1930-1940s.

I think mainly I just plant enough for me and them.
You can try to put up some CDs or DVDs, hanging from strings to reflect the sunlight. Sometimes it will help. It’s worth a shot anyway.
