Does Elden Ring need a direct prequel/sequel? I'd love to know more about the shattering, and it'd be awesome to be involved in the Malenia Radhan battle.

No, fromsoft games are not lore centric, they're difficulty based, and by keeping it same universe but not same place they keep the lore of that universe while not needing to connect dots to make a fight/location make sense
And moonlight greatsword I'm pretty sure started because they liked the design and has since become a symbol of the soulsbourne franchise
