  • Applying a coat of Golden's Self Leveling Gel on an acrylic painting can be tricky...here's how I do it. This gel is non-toxic and fills in all the little scratches and tool marks in a painting to give you a smooth, high gloss, protective, resin-like surface.

    What a cool video, and I learned so much. I've used this product before as a final coat to a table that I decoupaged with lots of papers, acrylic paints and paint sprays and really didn't know what I was doing.

    Love this! Thank you Susan. Just listened to your podcast with Nick. Doing CVP right now and was wondering wth Leveling Paste is, haha. So far I've only used it to "glue" scraps onto my 3 boards, haha. Now I have a whole lot more respect for what it can do. So thank you! 💖

    Some additional help for anyone with questions.... I don’t thin the self leveling gel at all! I buy a big-ass bucket of it and put it into a pourable jug, pour it on straight up, and use that foam brush to very slowly spread it. I keep a spray bottle of alcohol handy as you’ll see in the video. This is very important because you WILL get bubbles, and a very fine mist of alcohol will pop them for you.
    Make sure the piece is level when finished, and there are no furry friends roaming around it for the next 24 hours. If it still looks cloudy in places, it’s not quite dry yet - should be 100% clear when dry. And when it’s dry, you can do it again - add another coat - and get it even thicker.

    Hi, an interesting video. I have seen other youtube films the same as yours and everyone is manually leveling the "self leveling gel" so - would you say it's misnamed? I imagined that you would put it on but would have to protect edges as it would spill over, but it seems actually NOT to move until you spread. A very strangely named product ;)

    I have a question for you. I did an acrylic painting and put a resin coat over it and when it dried there were empty puddles where the resin didn't adhere. I put another coat and there are still areas that pulled away and the resin is just not covering it well. Can I put the self leveling gel on it now that it has dried for over two weeks ago and do you think it will fill in the dry puddles spots?

    Doesn't using a foam brush promote the formation of bubbles?

    Hi Susan! Thank you so much! ...another question if I may...if you did successive layers, letting each one dry completely, how infinitely--if that make sense-clear do you believe it would stay (for example, up to one inch "deep")? Educated guess is fine...Thanks! Brady

      Hi Brady - pretty sure you would still have good clarity. If you're unsure, you can always call Golden Tech Support at 800-959-6543.

    Hi and thank you for your video. Do you think that the self leveling gel could be replaced by pouring medium?

    • @SusanMelrath
      @SusanMelrath  8 років тому

      Hi Ann - Pouring medium is thinner, so you may have to use many, many more coats. Here is an instructional video I found for you. ua-cam.com/video/AURzEMsBaY4/v-deo.html

      Thank you for taking the time to look into it and providing a link. I went out and found a 4 oz cold wax medium and will give this a shot :-)

    What is the percentage of alcohol? They usually come in 70% or 90 % alcohol

    Hi Susan! Do you mind sharing the name of the product that you use for the isolation coat (before the self-leveling gel)? Your video gives me some confidence to give this a try! Thanks!! Terri Schmitt

      +Terri Schmitt Of course I don't mind! I use Golden soft gel gloss mixed with a little water. You can read more here... www.goldenpaints.com/technicalinfo_isolationcoat Sometimes I don't even bother with it.

    Can this be used as a top coat?

    • @SusanMelrath
      @SusanMelrath  4 роки тому +1

      Depends what you mean by topcoat. Traditionally, a removable varnish is what is used as a protective top coat. But if you like the glossy finish, and your painting is in a relatively safe area, I think this would suffice.
