- In today's tiny tip I'm exploring Clear Tar Gel by Golden. I've never done this before. I'm experimenting a lot these days to inspire some growth in my artwork. Seeing what new materials and mediums I might like is important to move my work in a new direction.
Liquitex also makes this and calls it string gel.

Love the color scheme (seeing the Quinacridone Nickel Azo Gold made me sad, because now we’ve lost Quin Gold, we’ve lost Quin Burnt Orange, & therefore we’ve lost even the Quin Nickel Azo replacement formula, which I believe was Quin Burnt Orange + Nickel Azo Yellow 😭 Precious pigments; if you have a stockpile, cherish them). You say this isn’t a serious piece of art, but I really like what you’d did with it. It could make a great album cover or something like that (maybe with maps or some other collage backing that was actually relevant to the band/album in question, but still).
I like doing these things to test for later projects. I still haven't used tar gel in a painting. I think I will plan to do that soon.
Love this. For finer lines I use string gel. Gels over book text makes cool collage papers too.
That’s a great idea
Thank you so much Susan, I really really enjoyed watching you create with this clear tar Gell, never heard of it but, I really really love ❤️ the effects it can create. Please stay safe and well too xxx Mags ❤❤❤❤
It is fun. I want to try to use it mixed with color.
I’m not clear on what you put down before the tar gel? Your colors look beautiful. Thanks. 🙏
I may have done that too fast. I sealed the map collage with GAC 200. It's a golden medium that is for hard substrates. Seals the collage nicely. I was afraid the tar gel might seep under the paper.
That was great. I have clear tar gel, but have never used it, will give it a try now! Loved the maps used in this!! I often use maps as a first pull sheet for botanical gel prints, with interesting results!
That sounds interesting. I recently was given a box of maps so I will be doing more with them soon. Free paper. LOL
Susan, This is beautiful. Thank you for showing this product and technique.
You are so welcome!
Always love your videos! Never heard of tar gel until this video and I can see all sorts of applications with this medium.
Thanks. Do they ever have Golden demonstrations in your area. They usually have a representative from Golden demo the products at art supply stores. And they give you samples. I’ve been to about 4 demos.
@@SusanCliftonArtist they probably do but I try to stay out of the art supplies store these days because it’s too tempting to buy everything! LOL! But I am definitely going to look for this medium. I work in acrylics now mostly so I like to try whatever new products they have out.
Lately, I was experimenting with tar gel and metalics, I used a palet knife, too. I drizzled it, but I also used the palet knife the usual way. It really gave nice effects. I spray painted the canvas with chrome before I used the tar gel. Later on I put some iridiscent blues and pinks and the chrome beneath the tar gel gave a sort of mirror effect. That was really fun
I still haven't figured out how to use it in my artwork. Maybe someday.
Super cool. I didn’t know how it was done. Thanks 😊
You’re welcome 😊
Thanks so much. Got this in a sampler pack and was about to toss it before searching. And love the idea with the map too
Funny. I had one that I got in a sample pack as well. They are smart to do that. Because sometimes we just don't know about this wonderful mediums that do so much.
I really love this effect, thank you! It has a lot of possibilities so I'll definitely try it.
I can see where it can become addictive. 😎
I love how this worked out!
Thinking about how I can use this. I love the effect.
@SusanCliftonArtist Me too! It reminds me how as a kid I used to pour white glue out into shapes and paint on and around it! It's almost exactly the same, except I could pour it out of the painted tip bottle and make it as thick or thin as I wanted!
Thanks for Sharing 🥰
You are so welcome. Thanks for watching.
This is very cool! I’ve never heard of the tar gel. This could be fun!
Yes, it is fun. This was my first time using it. It’s creates a nice effect
@@SusanCliftonArtist Do you know if it’s flexible? I am thinking it would be fun to use with paint on unmounted canvas, and using the canvas for a book cover. What do you think?
I love it❤❤❤❤❤
Thanks for watching
This is so cool! I've got an NYC map in mind. In regard to sealing with GAC 200, do you use a brush to apply or soft cloth. I'm getting brush strokes with all my sealing products. How can I change that?
Try a sponge brush. Or a self leveling gel. Golden has one. amzn.to/43RgjTU , I haven't done a video on it but it's an idea. I've used Liquitex Pouring medium straight from the bottle and it self levels and all brush strokes are gone. And it's also a glossy finish.
Thank you for this informative video. I have a question: is the clear tar gel completely clear/transparent? I'm asking because I used Liquitex super heavy gel because I wanted to create some texture, but I also wanted it to be completely clear/transparent so that the image underneath the gel medium would be fully visible, but unfortunately I found it to be a bit too cloudy. Do you think Golden's clear tar gel would work better for this purpose?
I wouldn't use it to add texture. It is clear but the only texture is what you create when you drizzle it. If you think you can get the type of texture you want then do a small test. Wish I could be of more help. 😎
Thank you for this tip about tar gel. I have wondered many times what artists do with it. How long did you leave the acrylic paint before rubbing it off?
I left the tar gel to dry overnight. The acrylic paint over the tar gel I didn’t wait at all.
This is a very cool technique!
How long did it take for the tar gel to dry?
I left it overnight to completely dry.
😮
Is it the same as Resin⁉️
No. Resin is a two part system that you mix together and after you pour over the painting it dries to a glossy hard finish. Tar gel is glossy and stringy.
I like it
There are so many interesting mediums and so little time.
@@SusanCliftonArtist I feel you 😇
What is tar gel?
It a stringy medium that dries clear and glossy.
