    What made that scene funnier is everything despite it being an action movie, had sort of an office humor tone.

    • @sacredf8
      @sacredf8 4 роки тому +11

      It's because of Paul Verhoeven's sense of humour. He still manages to make a brutal action movie and still include some great comedy as well.

    • @Shanethefilmmaker
      @Shanethefilmmaker 4 роки тому +3

      @@sacredf8 Ya. MCU could learn a thing or two from that guy. When he puts comedy in his action it doesn't drain away the drama or grittiness of the movie. When MCU does it, everything stops as though you're supposed to laugh at it.

    • @sacredf8
      @sacredf8 4 роки тому +2

      @@Shanethefilmmaker I agree, it's almost like they're trying to say "Look! We made a funny joke! Laugh! Ha! Ha!"

    • @Shanethefilmmaker
      @Shanethefilmmaker 4 роки тому +3

      @@sacredf8 Exactly. True comedy even in a genre that has some comedy or no comedy, is all about timing, execution and above all else surprise. We were shocked when Kinney got killed by ED-209, but we laughed because it kept firing on him even though he was dead. Whereas these bozos at MCU have it backwards, they think we have to see it coming so that we have their permission to laugh.

    • @sacredf8
      @sacredf8 4 роки тому +2

      @@Shanethefilmmaker Yeah a lot of movies these days really lack the sophistication that the 80's and 90's movies had. The MCU movies are decent, but the comedy is so forced to the audience.

      Helm is hilarious in this movie, he gets a bad death, sadly they don't show it in the final version, originally before the violence was cut down he gets disemboweled by the little hooker, and Richter's death is more brutal, but apparently the footage is lost or misplaced, so I guess we'll never see, I believe there's some old pictures of a few of the scenes in a fangoria magazine

    • @sarkaniemi
      @sarkaniemi 8 років тому +9

      +Vincent Thompson Yeah that must have been one of the stupidest decisions. The original movie kicked so much ass. I've seen it several times and still enjoy it every single time. I did not see the remake from 2015 and will never do, because that would be a WASTE OF TIME! I can't believe they even came up with such stupid idea! Who would replace Arnold?! I mean in the 80s and 90s Arnold was at his best, such as in this movie. This movie is a classic.
      Apparently the remake from 2015 didn't do so well! I'm sure it went minus big time! Which would not come as a surprise.

      The problem with remakes is they're supposed to "up the anty". If your going to make a remake, make it bloodier, more vulgar, and more well written than the original. The remake we got had none of those things. It was very forgettable. I watched it and couldn't tell you today what it was about. But I remember all the characters and story from the original movie because it was so over the top vulgar and violent AND well written that it is burned into my memory forever. You never found out if Quaid was in the dream state or if it was real which is a great storytelling cliff hangar. Don't think another movie was able to do that until Inception came out.

      Hollywood is stupid and greedy

  • @QDesjardin04
    @QDesjardin04 4 роки тому +16

    There's debates over whether Total Recall was just an implanted dream from Quaid gone wild - all the scenes from Richter's perspective disprove that point. With dreams, you don't have characters outside your awareness having inner conflicts, arguments, a backstory of their own. Quaid was never even aware that his wife "Lori" was actually Richter's lover, let alone Richter being just some goon chasing his tail.
    So in a sense, Total Recall becomes the story of Quaid.. waking up from the facade of normality, to reveal much more is going on than it seems.

    • @gdon12987
      @gdon12987 4 роки тому +6

      I think you are right, if it was like a dream. But if it's an implanted story, with its own history of Martians and mutants, then it may well have perspectives apart from Quaid's, to add depth, history, background and motivations to the implanted story. E.g. cutscenes in some video games.

    • @riproar11
      @riproar11 Рік тому

      I have had dreams where I fall asleep in the dream, and then go into another dream. In some dreams, I have been an observer of another "character's" life unfolding, so your theory is very interesting, but at the same time Quaid's Recall dream may have had more depth to it with all of the other scenes of other characters taking place.
      The next thing I wonder about are all of the other people you see in your dreams, the extras in the crowds, and the faces of people you interact with, but you don't know. Does your mind create all of these distinct faces or do they all actually exist in real life and somehow are also "dialed-in" to the same dream scene, and your existence in the dream is only about your perspective of observing what is happening?

    As another commenter noted a conversation like this between a person on Earth and one on Mars would be impossible due to the finite speed of light. Even if Earth and Mars were at their closest approach a radio signal would take 3 minutes for a one way trip. If Earth and Mars were at their farthest separation a radio signal would take 22 minutes for a one way trip. So Cohagen would have had to wait from 6 minutes to 44 minutes for a reply from Richter (depending on the distance between Earth and Mars at the time).

    Me: I want that idiot virus gone!
    My friend: I don’t blame you, dude. I wouldn’t want some idiot like that virus delaying my favorite movies.
    Me: You saying everyone likes it?
    My friend: No, I’m sure they loathe every second of it.

    What's the name of the actor playing Richter's assistant, the guy with short hair cut and wearing glasses who tries to trace Quaid?

      +WESKER terminator Thank you! Actually I also searched for his name and found it earlier! I've seen this movie several times. Yet I like it every time I watch it! Last time I saw it was a few weeks ago, hence my question about this actor's name! I guess everytime I watch it I learn and discover new things! Thanks!

      The character’s name is Helm. Searched it up on the Villains Wiki. Compared to the “pawns” in movie and tv history, Helm seems to have good points throughout the film, like stopping Richter from cracking the dome and killing everyone in Mars.

    Sad seeing Ironside reduced to being fodder for Arnie to humiliate when he's a much better actor and was going from strength to strength already cutting his chops as the bad guy then becoming good as a hero in V.

    Mr C,
    “What the fuck is going down on there?”
    Richter,
    “I’m trying to neutralize a traitor sir.”
    Mr. C,
    “If I wanted him dead you moron, I wouldn’t have dumped him on earth.”
    Richter,
    “That’s now, in a hour he could have total recall.”
    Mr. C,
    “Listen to me Richter, I want Quaid back for reimplementation. Have you got that? I want him back in place with Lori. Did you hear me?”
    Richter,
    “What was that sir? I couldn’t hear you.”

    i don't understand why COHAAGEN didn't want Quaid to be dead...... can anyone explain, plot-wise? thank you

    • @richardmarchiafava3904
      @richardmarchiafava3904 5 років тому +2

      He explains it later in the film but if you want a spoiler here it is Cohagen and Hauser are best of friends and they created a plan a year in the making to have Hauser's memory voluntarily erased to become Douglas Quaid and to be married on earth to eventually become activated and become friends with the resistance and melina on Mars to get to kuato to stop them from reaching the reactor Room to turn on the machine that makes air for the entire planet of Mars, quiads dreams of a melina and mars got him Intrigued he goes to rekall the memory implant facility and chooses the secret agent option but something goes wrong and hausers memories surface and they knock him out and do a shitty job of erasing his memories of rekall and because of this thats why his wife lori and his friend harry and Richter are trying to kill him thats why cohagan wants him back for "reimplantation" to make it go smoother

    The remake was gay gay gay. They didn’t even have richter. Then again this movie should never be remade along with many other old movies of this era. Why fox what was never broken? No mars. No Arnold. No ironside. No extreme violence. Blasphemy.

    The only blip in Total Recall 1990 is Phil Donahue playing Richter's buddy cop. He was pretty lame. Seemed out of place. Good move by him to quit acting and marry Connie Chung.
