    My family come from Co Mayo so this has been particularly interesting for me. My mother born in Westport. During the 1850s 4 Horkan brothers left for the US. My Horkan ancestors also fought for land ownage during that time.

      Not just the Irish, many countries suffered because of the British intervention and colonozation, India, Tunesia, Syria and many many more i know so many heroes in my own town in Iran that died resisting the Brits. No wonder when i see victorian films it seems all those dukes and lords never work one day in their lives...they steal resources from countries all over the world

      The British aristocracy, the ordinary British person was treated by them just as badly, no votes, put to death if they caught a rabbit on the estate they worked etc etc etc

    Laughable that the church would issue a verbal written threat about the Irish ladies land … where was the church saving these people from being evicted paying their arrears??? the Catholic Church certainly could afford it back then and now considering they’re one of the richest’ businesses’ in the world and they are also one of the richest landowners in the world…

    Watching this, we ALL should be grateful to have food, a roof and the chance to give education to our children.
    After all that's done, we put the laundry in a machine, the dirty dishes in another and watch TV with a good beer and another late snack.
    To discover how our ancestors had to fight...
    Stay humble, modern people! Don't complain that you can't afford the second car or the third holiday this year in Spain.
    Btw. I don't have a dishwasher except my hands...😉

    They should use gloves handling those books and records. Preserve history.

    • @patriciag6030
      @patriciag6030 4 роки тому +10

      Wearing gloves can often do more damage to paper and the binding of books than clean dry hands. Gloves should be worn when handling photographs or objects, but as long as your hands are clean it's fine to touch paper with them.

    Thank you so much for this, it has explained a lot of my own family history. My family name is Ireland, but it was a name given to us when we moved to England, they called us where we came from because our name was probably too Irish. I do know that we came from Mayo, so perhaps, we are from Islandeady?

      My family also. My mother was born in Westport. Her grandparents owned the pub The Sheebeen and was born upstairs in 1930. Many of her cousins still live there and I have visited over the last 6 yrs from Australia. The Horkans came from Liscottle sth of Swneford. I also have Hepburn and McGeevers if you ever do your family tree.

      You must be Irish, surnames were not of the Gael. The history can not be found through surnames or British records.

      Islandeady is a relatively small area between Westport and Castlebar, your people probably come from elsewhere. Mayo is the third largest county in Ireland by area: it is twice as large as the average sized county, and six times the size of Co.Louth.

    Clearly shows there's more to the history than the perceived view of hero's and villains. it's so easy to take the view of the down trodden against the overbearing landowner. Do you trust the view of presented?
