Having reached a turning point in his life, former daytime television presenter Richard Madeley decides to find out more about his family roots, and in particular the Canadian side of his family. He traces his extraordinary lineage back to the earliest Canadian and, to his surprise, American pioneers.
The trail leads Richard back seven generations to the first settlers of the then wild and largely uninhabited province of Nova Scotia. As he pushes back further, Richard discovers that the trail leads to America and New England. In Massachusetts, Richard discovers one ancestor striking a blow for women's rights, 300 years before women got the vote in America.
In Rhode Island Richard finds out that his eighth great-grandfather, Ezekiel Woodward, fought in a war between New England colonists and local Native Americans. In a moving and emotional encounter with a member of the Narrangansett Indian tribe, he discovers the role his ancestor played in one of the bloodiest ever massacres on American soil.
Richard's trail finally leads him to Boston, where he finds ancestors who travelled from England in search of religious freedom in the early 1630s, and discovers that they were among Boston's very first settlers and part of the birth of modern America.

I have at least five English/Colonist ancestors who fought in King Phillip’s War. It was bloody on both sides. “The Mayflower” by Nathan Philbrick has maps and intricate descriptions of that war.

My ancestors were in King Philip’s War. One direct grandmother and children were murdered when a Native American band attacked their farm. Her husband and son (my direct ancestors ) had been captured by the same tribe and were tortured and carried to Canada. Thankfully, they were rescued but came home to a dead wife/mother and all four children under the age of 10 were murdered. Remarkably, another ancestor of mine received a visit from Philip himself telling him to remove himself and family along with valuables to a certain area for a while to avoid attack. Apparently this particular ancestor was friends with Philip since they were both young. I love history and ancestry!!!

Nothing really unusual about it people travelled for a better life.
I'm 6th plus generation Australian all my ancestors were here by 1865 and so far have found that 3 of my ancestors on my American lineage were killed in raids or fighting during that war.

@@garystrahan4601 I guess my point's being missed. As a Californian child of immigrants just one generation on the maternal line and six that we can trace on the other side I get the better life thing. What I'm talking about is a family firmly settled by this British man's family centuries ago would have a scion that went back to England and as a firm Britisher found deep roots not in castles but in colonial North America. It's a vice versa, reverse genealogy story that tickles my fancy and hasn't been seen before on this show as far as I know. I studied American migration history as part of my BA by the way which is probably why I find this random fact at all interesting.

distribution agreements. VPN can let you see the Bitish content that's blacked out in the US. Like all the American subjects in this show. There was an American version of the show that is not free on youtube. maybe that's got something to do with it.

I'm not directly descended from John Quincy Adams but according to Ancestry he's my fourth cousin six times removed. My 9th great grandfather Edmund Quincy III is John Quincy Adams 3rd great grandfather.

The women had to follow their husbands. Can you imagine if you were forced to leave everyone and everything because of your husband?
